View Full Version : What do you keep your cards in?

Pretty straightforward. We all keep our cards somewhere. Usually the bulk cards are thrown in a box and the playable and expensive cards are either in deckboxes or binders. And the latter is what I'm curious about. Are there any deckboxes, binders, and binder pages that are particularly quality that others should be aware of?

Decks: Satin Tower. Swear by those every day. Can hold literally anything you want, and will protect your cards from everything short of a hydrogen bomb blast.
Loose cards: they usually just sit on my shelf. Sometimes I'll put them in a fat pack box. Neither is a particularly good idea seeing as my spare cards pile is worth more than many Modern decks.

Please try googling "really useful box", which to my knowledge is one of the few plastic boxes you can store cards in. They also stack well.
As far as sleeves go, KMC all the way. I use ultra pro for cheaper decks.

I've been using Dragon Shield lately as far as sleeves go. How does KMC compare?

A lot of people swear by KMCs. Personally, I think their Hyper Mats are garbage. They split and get dog-eared easily. I might have just gotten a bad batch, though. If you want to use a KMC sleeve, use their KMC Mats (regular). Those hold up VERY well.

I like to keep my decks in handmade wooden boxes obtained from various places. Some are lined, some aren't.
Having the best looking deck box is half the battle.

I'm using Ultimate Guard (deck box) for my deck and the Ultra Pro deckbox for random junk I might play.
I have a 4x4 pinder for random cards I don't play but still hold some value.

I'm super classy, I use the ever classic cardboard longbox. I have a 2x 800 or 1000 count boxes in a backpack full of sleeved and not sleeved legacy and modern staples sorted by color, then I have another 500 count box of built legacy decks in sleeves, and a smaller box with a modern deck in it.
I used to care about binders, but discovered I'd rather play with stuff and having most of my staples handy and sleeved means I can build any of the 20+ legacy decks available to me without too much trouble whenever I feel like.
I'd like one of these (http://piratelab.com/collections/card-games/products/black-large-card-case), but I don't think all the cards I want to keep handy would fit, I enjoy playing with too much jank.
I bought a small portable vault/locker to keep my vintage deck in when I play in those tournaments. I get weird looks from opponents and bystanders, but never had anything stolen.

Deckbox: Ultimate Guard - Flip&Tray

Those are so good that I've decided to use them for all my decks (legacy, vintage, oldschool).

Good for playsets, can store sleeved cards. At the moment I have 3, I keep the less valuable cards in the Dragon Shield sleeves boxes, sleeved.

My deck boxes are a mix of Ultra Pro and Ultimate Guard, of which I slightly prefer Ultimate Guard: they're a bit smaller, but their magnet system is better. For sleeves, it's KMC Hyper Mattes and Perfect Fits.

When not in a deck they are sorted alphabetically and a playset is kept in an 800 count, 3x4 tower. Cards are put into perfect fit sleeves and then glossy dragon shields when they make it to a deck. Constructed decks are kept in a simple mana symbol magnetic flap deckbox whereas commander decks are kept in a smaller Dex box.
I keep my decks in Ultra Pro Pro Deck Boxes (the fat kind) or in the Ultra Pro Satin Towers. Usually my primary Legacy / Modern decks go in the Satin Towers and my Standard decks and alternate decks go in the Ultra Pro Pro Deck Boxes.
I keep additional sideboard / alternate build cards for each of my decks in a few other Ultra Pro Pro Deck Boxes.
I keep my bulk commons/uncommons/rare that I crack from winnings (booster boxes) inside the original empty booster boxes.
I keep my foils and chase rares in two separate binders.
I also have a bunch of random cards just strewn around on the floor in front of my bed because I'm an incredibly messy and disorganized person.

Decks: Crappy flip-top things and even crappier GP handout boxes
Anything worth more than about $5: 3-ring binder, Ultra Pro pages, fire safe
Standard/Modern trade stuff: 4x4 binder, same safe
Bulk: 4x3 Card hotel that's running out of space and waiting to get sorted all over a shitty ugly card table that makes my office look like shit and this is why I stopped buying stuff
Seriously is there anything that can hold as much or more than a card hotel and not look like shit doing it? I don't keep more than a playset of anything and I'm still running out of space for commons. I guess I should just pull everything out and re-do it without sorting by rarity since they keep fucking that whole system up with reprints and masters sets anyway.

Bank Vault.
I make a full binder for each set using D-Ring binders and Ultra Pro 9 pocket pages. Playsets or less go in there. If I have more than a playset, the extra go in a 5 row box.
I keep my decks in KMC perfects, Dragon Shield sleeves (Mattes now) and a mish-mosh of deck boxes. Then I throw them all into my backpack.

KMC Perfect fits and I really like Dragon Shield Matte finish sleeves. Always double sleeve everything, I spilled a pool of ranch dressing on one of my cube cards and it was just fine because of it. Don't trust other people to not spill their drinks at tournaments either! I don't have any cards that aren't perfect fit protected, and I'll never take any of my cards out to play that don't have double sleeves. I hate the little symbol Ultra Pro sleeves have on them that always seem to make indentations on the back of the card it's next to, even if they aren't squashed together tightly.
Decks go in the Satin tower Ultra Pro deckboxes, which I think is completely necessary after seeing pictures of the foil Legacy delver deck that some guy fell out of his chair on when it was in a thinner plastic box and creased them down the middle. pics (http://imgur.com/a/L1bWI)
I was told by a dealer (forget which) that the top-loading 3 ring binder pages for card albums can cause some bending damage when flipped through, much more so than the side loading ones (like the ultra pro pro-binder). I dunno if that's true, but side loading saves me so much effort because every once in a while they'll be upside-down and not having to worry about all the cards sliding out is a huge plus.

I can confirm this is true. I've found it to be an issue with D-ring binders but not with 3-ring binders with smaller, rounded rings. I'm looking for a couple of top-loading binders with sewn-in pages, but side-loading seems to be almost 100 percent of the binder market now.
Don't trust other people to not spill their drinks at tournaments either!
This a million times. I've witnessed spills in several places, and frequently it's a bystander's bag or backpack brushing by that tips something over. Just don't allow drinks on the table and things should be fine.

I store my Magic cards the old-fashioned way: buried in soft peat out back by the bog, like nature intended.
Also, whats wrong with you people who are allowing people to place their soft drinks and buckets of ranch dressing anywhere near your cards? Get a tray and set the yummies down there, off the table, you bunch of animals.

I need more boxes to add my collection to the pile but I plan on sealing these boxes and sealing them in totes.
I keep what I want to use in them gift boxes with dividers and labels with most of them in sleeves.
I have a trade binder and a keep till valuable binder.
1" binders only and I use them large(huge), hair band/ties to keep the binder shut and I always out them in the bag rings up.
I use whatever deck box I can that fits the 75, currently in use this to hold many dbl sleeved decks, dice tokens, whatever.

If it's just game night and I need only one deck I use a jewel box thats big enough to hold the large plastic "sleeves" you get when you buy online(name escapes me atm).
As for decks I use kmc perfect fit and ultra pro outers because sleeves split, I'd rather pay almost nothing to replace the outer sleeve.
Also they never hold air like dragon shields and kmc outers do

Sweet potato fries on beer club night is the only way to cube. I regret nothing. I spilled it on my own cards if that helps any.
And yeah, double sleeves.
I keep my play collection double sleeved and in a 3-row box alphabetized by color with each color having its own outer sleeve color (white, Blue, Black, Red, Green, Yellow, Purple).
For the lands I have them double sleeved and in 12 pocket zipper binders, for instance one of the binders is for multi colored lands and it starts with duals, shocks, tango lands, fetches, check lands, fast lands, etc, and at the end of that binder I have my 3+color lands like Murmuring Bosk, City of Brass, and Mana Confluence.
Second land binder is for mono color/utility lands, like artifact lands, cycle lands, Gaea's Cradle, Serra Sanctum, Academy Ruins, man lands (other than the multi colored ones), Locus lands, sol lands, LD lands (Ghost Quarter, Tec Edge, Wasteland, Strip Mine), Dark Depths, Thespian's Stage, Tabernacle, Maze of Ith, Phyrexian Tower, etc.
Third land binder is for Basic lands and I keep my spare investment foil fetches in that binder as well.

I've been switching my decks to using Dragon Shield sleeves. My older decks are in Ultra Pro sleeves.
I have my decks in an assortment of old Ultra Pro and Rook boxes. Those decks are in a steel Rook case that holds 8 deck boxes.
Playable cards are in 2 binders. 1 is for rares, uncommons, and more expensive cards. The other binder is mostly commons.
I have an empty bedroom that has stacks of bulk commons and uncommons sorted by color. They will find their way into large card boxes soon as I further sort the old collection. I've been thinking having an old library card catalog would be a great way to store them.

I use the Ultra-Pro flip-top boxes for the majority of my decks. I do have some of the cheaper Legion plastic boxes for less expensive decks and to take to GPs so I can store some of the stuff I buy. I also have 2 of those Ultra Pro hard platic tower boxes. They are alright, but I prefer the magnetic flip boxes. My Burn deck (Modern/Legacy) is split in one of those Monster boxes with the 2 pull-out sections.
For sleeves I use BCW inner sleeves (exactly like KMC, but about 1/5 of the price: http://www.bcwsupplies.com/cat/trading-card/sleeves-toploaders/regular-inner-sleeve ) and I have been using the Dragon Shield matte sleeves for some time now. I LOVE them and I have not had good luck with KMC sleeves in the past. However, my Enchantress deck is in some Pink matte Ultra Pro sleeves.
My valuable cards are in a few Ultra Pro binders (3x3), my playable rares uncommons and commons are in a few fat back boxes, and my bulk is in those long white cardboard boxes.
I am currently refinishing a cedar chest I found at a yard sale and I plan on putting my collection in there for now since the humid weather in W. PA can cause some minor damage. However, the idea of a fire safe is pretty cool. I might have to look into that.

I keep my Legacy shit double-sleeved (KMC Perfect Fits/KMC mattes) in a Monster side-load binder (and I agree with previous posters about what a bummer it is to have cards slide out the top of traditional binder pages).
Everything else is in fat pack boxes...but, since I live in SoCal, 100% of my collection lives in fireproof safes so I don't have to be a sad panda if the worst happens.

Top loading binders: just get one with a zipper cover. Any office supply store will have them.
Card catalogs: if you can find one that's reasonably priced, please let me know. I've looked on Craigslist and even the beat to shit ones just get labeled "antique" and priced at at least $400. Maybe I should just learn woodworking.

Anyone knows if it's still available at a reasonable price a KMC plastic box that can hold up to 750-1000 cards? I thought it was quite nice and now that I wouldn't mind to get one, can't find it :(
If you know something similar it would be great!
Thanks!!!

Deck boxes: Ultra Pro Satin Tower, I`ve never considered anything else after I started using these. I keep some soft fabric in the dice compartment to stop that noise.
Sleeves: KMC Perfect Fit inside black Dragon Shield Matte. Fits like a glove.
Extra cards for decks (the tweak library): Dragon Shield four-compartment storage box. (https://www.google.no/search?q=Dragon+Shield+four-compartment+storage+box&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=917&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwim2OH-p7bNAhVJWCwKHfhpAnkQ_AUIBigB) The compartments make it very convenient for multiple decks. It never leaves the house, I wouldn`t recommend bringing it anywhere.
Bulk, basics and all the other crap: That white cardboard box in Sidneyious´ post, everything sorted after color and card type with plastic dividers. I think the box was called "monster" something.
Will [Satin Tower] fit a double sleeved deck with sb?Yes, easily, with plenty of spare room for tokens and dividers.

So, I just recently got a case from this fellow:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/255754041/aluminum-case-card-organizer-insert-for?ref=shop_home_feat_4
I'm very happy so far and thought I'd share.
The large version has a lock and strap and is large enough to accommodate an entire set of Vintage and Legacy playables (Menedian's list plus some Legacy inclusions) in double sleeves. The lock is awesome to keep little hands out of your cards.
The smaller case is great to carry decks around in. I was able to fit two double-sleeved Legacy decks, two single-sleeved EDH decks, and about 10 unsleeved casual decks, plus small dice in a deck box. If I didn't already have a nice wooden box for my cube, I'd put it in one of these, too.
I don't think it's as fireproof/crushproof/etc as the Cube Vault was, but since no one seems to be selling the Cube Vault anymore, this is a good second choice.

Little hands start digging quite a while before the head that`s attached to those hands can be taught that certain things are not for them to touch. Of course, this is what top shelves are for.
Personallly, I lucked out and only got some chewing marks on my 8th Choke. I guess he hates white borders.

Spoken like someone who has never had to educate said hands.
It's extra-challenging when you have a real card catalog (think 1980s libraries) as your card storage.

Bulk usually gets handed off to kids at the shop. I try not to bring it home.
