Was talking to a co-worker today who told me he used to collect MtG. He has a complete set of every set from Alpha-Tempest at what he estimated to be Near Mint condition. He didn`t really play he just collected and thought it was worth around 5k haha. Anyone have an idea of what they might be worth?

Well, a quick search found ABUGames, they have listings for complete sets:
Alpha $109,722.44
Beta $73,446.99
Unlimited $25,839.67
Revised $2,057.23

So just a bit more

You definitely should have payed him 5K and then quit your job. ABUGames has a complete set of Alpha for $109,722 and Beta for $73,446. Add in just Antiquities at $2,199 and Arabian Nights for $3,765 and you are already looking at $189,132.

Hope that guy enjoys buying his new house.

EDIT: I was too slow and forgot Unlimted. Anyway my point still stands.

In this case, you should have just got his address and robbed him. More seriously, see if he'll part with some of his collection at the dealer price. You'll still be doing well.

Yeah, even if you go by they ABUGames buylist:
Alpha $63,018.51
Beta $41,581.25
Unlimited $13,851.37
Revised $1,141.92

So tell him that he's wrong, it like, at least like 8k, and offer him cash, and then disappear.

This just seems so impossible to me...

Not that someone would have collected those early sets without playing them, but that they would have held on to them for decades without ever being slightly curious about their current value.
At any time in the last 10 years, if your friend had checked the value the correct action would be to immediately sell them. It just boggles the mind. I wish I could be there to see his reaction when he finds out what he has.

This is very hard to believe. Not impossible, but very unlikely that someone would do something so diligently for years, then never check the value. I don't doubt that someone told you this, I doubt it is true. Picture or it didn't happen.

Secondly, the total value is for all is more like 100k, not the prices people are quoting from retail stores. My shampoo I buy costs me 10 dollars retail, but it has very little monetary value. If it is true and your friend sells, let me know if you get more than 100k, I would be surprised.

Well the fact that tempest was a hell of a long time ago and that he doesn't have anything newer leads me to believe the sets have been sitting in his closet for 20 years.

Just like the time some teen at the shop tried to convince me that his grandfather has 2 sealed boxes of Alpha sitting at home for him.

To clarify, he wasn't trying to sell them to me. He told me he had turned down 5k from his friend about 10 years ago, so he knew there was value but had no idea to what extent. When I told him what it was worth, he immediately asked me where he could get them appraised so he can get them insured. Thanks guys.

Sure, like those stories of people with MTG cards from the 80's... Cool story, bro.

This doesn't sound unreasonable. I had someone sell me complete sets from Revised to Weatherlight. Some people just have old collections.

Huuuuuuuuuuge difference in value there.
My point was that it seems impossible someone could be sitting on that much value for so long and have no idea it could be turned into a fast food franchise.

For example, I have complete sets of X-Men cards from around the same time as Beta/Unlimited and I know they are worthless.

He had to ask me to price it for him. He had no idea. I bought the sets and could have taken them for pennies.
