View Full Version : Playing against *Non-Tournament Legal* cards?

Where I usually play it's fairly open for players to use the likes of the "world champs" cards, proxies and the like, so long as the owner see's a little money coming his way, he's usually cool with it. We have a limit of 8 proxies if it matters.
Personally I like it, given not everyone can pay for full playsets of Force of Will, Underground Sea etc., so it means I'm more likely to come up against strong decks, than sub-optimal ones.

How about your local?
And do you agree with it one way or the other?

If the event is not Sactioned, all I ask is that your card be one I can recognise at a glance.

Hard not to agree. We run a full proxy non sanctioned monthly tournament. The only thing we ask is a good printer...

If all card information is intact (name, cost, type, text, mechanical info like for DFCs, etc.) and the card is in a sleeve indistinguishable from other cards (thickness, corners, etc) I see no problem allowing them for locals for the monetary insanity what is Legacy right now.

For official tournaments however, some judges don't even allow altered cards even if all the info is intact, but the card isn't recognizable via artwork anymore (hello, feature matches!). One of the most extreme examples which judges seem to allow is Philip Schöneggers altered Miracles (I have troubles to differ his Islands and Plains for what its worth hahahaha), my "Lost Eye Diamonds" however seem to have only a 50/50 chance of passing a judge. The most outstanding dumb reasoning, for not allowing altered cards, I heared from the bearded french Judge always wearing a Fedora (and me always forgetting his name). I can live with each other judges individual reasoning usually (unless I leave my backup cards at home before flight)

So does Ifh-Biff Efreet or revised Serendib Efreet get the axe?

This is the most important thing. I hate not recognizing cards so much that i dont even like that they reprint cards so often with new artwork. I dont play often, and even though i've ben playing for 20 years, there are cards i dont recognize because they have new artwork and it slows down the game.

I would have a nice anecdote in regards to that, but that would not fit here

We've got a local store that allows proxies, I've taken advantage of it from time to time and it's pretty loose. When I do it, I just write the card name on a slip of paper and stick it in a sleeve over the card. Other people write out the full card text, and others will print stuff off. The store even has a printer for people to use for this purpose.

Obviously they're only allowed in non sanctioned events but we do a proxy legal Legacy night once a week.

As someone who owns the cards to make a few decks it doesn't bother me one bit, it's the only way I ever get a chance to play them. Oddly enough though, this has given the locals an attitude and a lot of the proxy players will refuse to play with you, unless you're playing a t1 deck... even when they've brought something stupid like Belcher or Spanish Inquisition to the table.

My lgs is very lax when it comes to legacy night.
No big name cards, my burn, affinity and spiral tide decks are t1 op.

But the problem is this guy that says he's the judge(rules advisor) doesn't want the poorer people to have a real legacy night.

Me and an acquaintance want to use proxies and even the champ cards as proxies (which IMO in sleeves they are a proxy).

But the store owner says sure, I will bring up some ideas to the lgso to make more of a fun environment.

There has to be a limit to how many proxies you can use because full proxie deck is not what one wants to deal with.

I like the usual t1 limit of 10 so for many for legacy it's lands because that opens doors for deck ideas.

A tangent

The RA will buy cards from the shop so he don't have to see them against him, but yet he talks the talk and does not walk the walk.

Why don't you tell him that the Rules Advisor position was discontinued by the Judge Program and the official title for a Level 0 is now "Wannabe"?
