View Full Version : What's the point of locking old threads?

I've seen it again in the SCD Swang Song Thread (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?26800-How-is-Swan-Song-doing) and certainly saw it before in other threads, too:
Threads get locked for no other reasons than being old, being a "necro thread". No spamming, no flaming, just an old thread.
I always wonder why. I also couldn't find anything in the forum rules.
In this particular example, if I want to discuss Swang Song, why should I open a new thread and lose all the other discussion history?
What's so wrong with replying to old threads? Sure, there's a new context, new cards, new metagames etc., but so what? If it revives a discussion it should be fine.
What do you achieve by locking old threads?

If you think that's bad, I made a SCD strategy thread (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?30854-Anti-SCD-Terminus) about cards/decks/strategies that are good against Terminus--one that didn't even mention the ban list--and it got locked. That was truly bizarre.

It's basically ban list talk by stealth. That's exactly where it's going to go, it will take less than a page to get there and it is going to oh so fun to watch. Also we have a thread for that talk, The Miracles primer. If you want to know answers to single cards played by only one deck, go ask their thread.
As for locking old threads, no idea. I don't do that.

- I stated that I was pro Terminus existence. What is that, next next level stealth?
- The entire thread was strategy talk, with no ban talk or agita, when you closed it up.
- The Miracles primer contains a compendium of cards/decks/strategies that best Terminus? I don't think so. Many of the suggestions in the thread were new to me.
- Threads like that are common and useful (How to Beat Storm (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?30679-Article-How-to-beat-Storm), Best hate vs. Omnitell? (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?29510-Best-hate-vs-Omnitell), etc) and surely are less likely to go to get "fun" than apparently sanctioned threads like Gender and Gaming (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?30562-Gender-and-Gaming).

Fair enough. I will admit I have been somewhat hasty then.

Kudos for saying that. Rare quality.

Single-card discussions are most useful before a card is released or when a card is new or not widely attempted. Swan Song has existed for years now and is considered playable but usually not ideal. It's a card that shows up in sideboards on occasion, and you can certainly build around it so that the Swan token is less of a disadvantage. Why not go to the thread for the deck you want to play Swan Song in?
The majority of necroed threads that I've seen posed no new arguments, and I support the mods' decision to lock them. Necros are usually caused by people new to the site who just click through and don't pay attention to the dates of the posts. I think if you really had a burning desire to discuss Swan Song on its own, you could post a new thread, but like I already said, it's probably more productive to put the card in a deck and take the discussion to Established or New and Developmental, or wherever your deck lies.
