This was mentioned in the prices rantfest, and the topic looks important enough to merit its own thread. Apologies if there is already an ancient long forgotten thread for this.

Anyhow:

I think her style is one of the greatest in magic. Her Path to Exile is also out of this world.

Funny that Jesper Myrfors and Mark Tedin were usually tapped for this task.

In addition to awesome authentic art, the text box feeds the feel of an unwieldy monster that only a powerful wizard could control. Of course a weak or unprepared wizard could also summon them, but would be quickly overwhelmed by their sheer power.

I always liked Serra Avatar's art. Felt like there was more going in the art that made me want to dig deeper. I'm sad they never picked it as an HD wallpaper.

Notable mentions are original Wrath of God because it reminded me of the the art in the bible from the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Also any art that is simply art gets a lot of appreciation from me, like most land art and cards like Stasis.

There were lot of awesome artworks, unique styles, and pictures that caused players to investigate the card. When I was a kid, I once received a core set starter pack with some cards and a thin guide how to play the game. I cannot remember the actual edition but it was quite a long time ago. All those fantastic creatures and spells let me dream about the foreign worlds and dragged me into the game; they had souls, in contrast to the highly polished generic ones they print nowadays.

I refer to something like beta/FBB Terror or Leery Fogbeast which were my favourite cards back then.

The most recent artwork I like is Tombstalker.

I carry a layers cheat sheet with me.

Humility is one of my favorites just because it's so nonsensical. What does the picture even mean?

http://www.thugdome.com/images/covers/cards/mtg_humility.jpg

A lot of the old cards hit that sentimental sweet spot. Recently though, the newest best art card has been Descendants' Path.

And because it was in a deck with Humility, probably also Goblin Trenches.

Most of the art from Robert Bliss, Quinton Hoover, and RKF. Probably Teferi's Curse, Tragic Poet, and Jasmine Boreal respectively for individual favorites. I understand the value of having more consistent art direction these days, but I miss the variety in older sets.

I agree wholeheartedly. You used to be able to tell the difference between artists just by looking at the artwork. Now everything looks the same.

in addition to the artwork just being better (in my opinion) on the earlier cards, I also appreciated the card design more. The colors were significantly richer and although I have no proof, the card stock cards were printed on (for alpha, beta, and unlimited at least) seemed thicker and more sturdy than today. Today cards feel like cheap poker playing cards.

Except Teresse Nielson. I guess she's so popular that they know they can't force her into the mold. Only makes the mold more obvious, IMO.

Yes she's one of my favorites, especially since she did the GURU lands. :)
I also like Rebecca Guay and Steve Argyle.

Rebecca Guay has a lot of arts I like so It's difficult for me to choose one. :(

She is one very very talented artist. Her and Ron Spencer have some of the most amazing artworks. They demonstrate their talents well in the alters they have made.

YES

Stasis and Time Walk have been two of my favourites forever. Love the surrealist fantasy style.

Yup. One mana answer to Delver.

Besides, all of Quinton Hoover's artwork is the best. This is the one that stood out for me when I was a kid - it's just good artwork.

For me, it is and it will ever be Stasis. Wonderful art, wonderful card (and wondeful way to lose Friends when playing it )

I don't know why, but I also really like a lot the art of Sorrow's Path:
