Way back when The Dark was still being printed, I used to read the Duelist. And in one of the early editions there was a piece of art (I believe it was a centerfold) that as far as I am aware did not belong to any particular card.

It was a hooded male figure is shabby grey/green clothes sitting on the branch of a large moss-covered tree. He was holding a skull and seemed to be carving or etching sigils onto it.

The picture stuck with me because I was playing green/black at the time (lol, Force of Nature and Lord of the Pit), and the art struck me as really epitomizing the life/death dichotomy of those two colours.

I'd love to track that art down, but after all these years I have no idea where to find it, or who created it. Does anyone else recall this picture, and can they point me in the right direction?

You'd probably have a better chance of getting information in one of the MTG Art Facebook groups. One is the MTG Art Exchange (https://www.facebook.com/groups/191646680997118/) and the other is the MtG Art Market (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1884307028466174/).

We're talking about art that appeared sometime around 1994, so DRS is about two decades later.

While the styles are very different, I can certainly see the thematic similarities, though.

I didn't notice a title - the artist interview is Rob Alexander.

wow I can see why it'd leave an impression. Almost glad it didn't make it onto a card, no way the small frame could do that justice. Amazing to see such a quick turnaround

That's it! Thank you very much; it's every bit as awesome as I remember. Now I have some info to try tracking down a copy!

Nice work tracking that down, Teluin! And thanks to the OP. I've never seen that art, and it is gorgeous.
