Do you ever miss the Black Splash? Jailer is better?
Yes. But in the mtgo meta g/w is a higher win percentage for me. I think I’m around 140 games and a 74% win rate. I’ve been playing aggro loam so haven’t played a lot lately with maverick. Jailer is good though, try it out.

The 4th Knight would really help against lands, ever since they cut black (for decay) they really struggle with you having an active knight. If there is a ton of True Name in your meta coming from control decks then maybe swap the Gideon for an Elspeth, she jumps threats over him. I'd recommend playing Marit Lage instead of cradle and a spell though if you're having problems against TNN from specifically Grixis Control, they don't really have answers for it.

i always felt like the 4th knight was over the top. the card is really good but in some mu, mostly combo, he's just a big beater. I'll still take the tip, and will probably try out the elpeth! thanks a lot

Hello everyone! I'm trying a version of Punishing Maverick with the combo DD+TS, and I removed the Stoneforge package because in a lot of games it was not enough or just a winmore. I'm now testing the following list:

3 Wasteland
3 Wooded Foothills
2 Forest
1 Dark Depths
1 Dryad Arbor

I would probably shave a fetch, add a dual. Probably second Savannah. As for card to add, any thought to something like the new 1RG creature that can have haste if you don't put a +1+1 counter on it and is a 3/3 with trample? Sorry the name evades me, but it's in the new set. I always like having a haste creature I can green sun for to kill off an unsuspecting Planeswalker. And with a hierarch or pridemage out it can even trample through a true name without dying. That or Captain Tickles aka Giant Solifuge

I'll try that, even though I hope they will print something else for Maverick in the Gruuls. One thing I noticed is that I miss a lot Umezawa's Jitte, maybe I can add one or two without all the Stoneforge package (I used to play 3 stoneforge + 1 jitte + 1 batterskull + 1 sword of f&i).
One creature I tried a lot but never really impressed me is Renegade Rallier. It is just me or we can easily cut it? Another thing I noticed is that Life from the Loam is far better than Ramunap Excavator, but I think keeping the split 1-1 is better because Ramunap is gszable).
Maybe instead of the second Savannah I can play another fetchable red source? Having only two is sometimes risky
Other cards that came in my mind for the 60th slot (and eventually 61st) are Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Huntmaster of the Fells and Granger Guildmage. Azusa is one of my pet cards, and maybe here with Wasteland and Loam and Ramunap she can be very powerful. Huntmaster is really powerful but the cmc=4 makes him difficult to play in some games. The guildmage is a card that a friend suggested me today, I never tried it but can be useful against X/1s (but maybe a Jitte is better...)
Giant Solifuge is strange, I never thought that that was a playable card in legacy  but maybe I'm wrong.

This is the list that I've been playing for a while now. I've done well with it in team events and just played online and in side events at Star City and at GP's. I've been considering starting to get more active with the deck and with that it means tuning for optimal performance. Currently I'm playing 61 cards (when Knight of Autumn got printed I just couldn't shave my Titania) and it's worked out pretty well for me. I know the 5 mana big creature seems not great but it plays really well with our knight of the reliquary plan and plays super well with any fetch along with wasteland and horizon canopy. Another note, my 4 mana planeswalker of choice has become Elspeth, Knight-Errant instead of Garruk Relentless or Gideon Ally of Zendikar, my reasoning for this is that she provides the same job in the control/miracles matchup, but can also make any of your creatures an evasive clock or can finish the game right on the spot. I know it seems bad because she can't animate herself and only makes 1/1s but shes proved to be quite the powerhouse in the few months that I've played her. The biggest difference that I've noticed on my list vs. traditional lists is my choice of playing Damping Sphere over Ethesworn Canonist. My logic is since there are quite a few sol lands running around the format along with it being good against storm is a great reason to play it. I intentionally don't play Gaea's Cradle because I'm splashing black out of the board, so it just seemed like a natural fit into the deck. I've consistently had success with it against the Eldrazi and other various Stompy lists along with it being just as good as canonist vs storm. Other than that my list is pretty traditional. My fetches are a little wonky, but I decided to play more fetches that get basic plains over basic forests due to the nature of there being wasteland in the format and the unusual amount of back to basics being played right now, and it can potentially put me in a better position to not have my single white source die. So yeah, any input/advice is welcome unless it's basically "Hey, you suck and this list sucks" none of us need to waste time on this.

I've played a lot of Titania in Maverick in the past, funnily I always had the thought that Gaea's Cradle was what enabled playing it in the first place, making it relatively easy to curve out BoP, KotR, Titania [edit: or GSZ for Totania even] (though often you'd rather play a Thalia and Waste your opponent before getting there). I guess Ramunap Excavator can help with this too though. I don't have much else to add since I didn't play Maverick for almost a year, tried Shalai when she was new. Nice to see a post though! Damping Sphere is an interesting addition, I'd include it in an Enlightened Tutor board with the usual suspects: RiP, Canonist, E. Plague, Needle, Choke (kind of).

I've tested cradle a bunch, and it never performs as well as I want it to, I'd rather always have the canopy/karakas/maze of ith
Cpt-Qc
01-28-2019, 05:06 AM
Cradle never competed with either of those. You actually need to play cradle + canopy + karakas + one utility land (can be maze if you want although it's gotten worse over time).
The two big divergences of maverick are either Cradle or Thespian Stage (which then takes your utility land slot for DD).

Has anyone messed around with Kavu Predator in Punishing versions? I know it's basically just a big, dumb beater with StP/Grove synergies but sometimes you just need a 7/7 trampler to end the game. I'm also curious if Sejiri Steppe is worth a slot. It provides a primary color for the deck and protects threats or allows attacks through blockers.

I'm wondering how good THC has become if you play 3-4 of her. Last time I tried her DRS was still around.
THC does makes even miracles weak to wasteland which isn't a bad thing but I'm not sure if it's really what we want.

I feel like if I want a White land-hater I'd rather have Aven Mindcensor. Mindcensor has applications against a variety of combo decks (and SFM decks) while being actual land hate in itself. The fact it has flash also helps with obnoxious walkers and whatnot; and opens up surprise "EoT Aven, untap, equip, swing" plays that can just end a game. I get it's another 1-toughness duder and whatnot; I just think that Mindcensor is better *and* it doesn't see play.
It's noteworthy that D&T (4 years ago or something) ran Mindcensors regularly.

Don't forget that fetchlands give you 2 turns to waste unless they get basics and also creatures come in tapped. That means there's nothing to block for a good while.
I think thc is noticeably better than mindsensor.

Censor and Thalia has both their upsides.
Censor flies and have flash (can kill delver, or equip jitte vs elves) vs Thalia has first strike (2 thalia and can stop Smasher with first strike)
Censor is better against Elves, ANT vs Thalia is better against Sneak Attack, mirror and Lands.
Censor is a Wizard vs Thalia is a Human
They both hate lands but in other way
Censor hate fetchlands and it's hard lock Thalia is a softlock and hate all nonbasics
Generally Censor is better against most combo except Sneak, Thalia is better against Midranges and Sneak.

Last time I played Big Thalia, DRS was legal and she was bonkers due to all of the 3-4 color manabase.
She is really good in tempo, eldrazi, sneak, elves and Grixis matchups.
Wasting fetchlands is huge, as is first strike against strix/scm
The biggest benefit is that she is played on turn 2 regularly and loves Karakas protection.
I don’t know if she is worth it, but this is my starting point atm.

The last time I used her I only had two open slots because 5 dorks was stock. I ended up cutting her not because she wasn't good but because I couldn't reliably find her on T2. She was definitely bonkers helping our bad matchups and locking in our even ones. I have to admit wastelanding miracles out of the game felt pretty sweet.
Nowadays I could probably find a way to slot in three copies, transitionning from having a few card advantage engines to a full-on tempo strategy. We never were very great at CA anyway so maybe we win more % points by committing to the mid-game.

I love Thalia HC but my main problem with it is you usually only have the slots to play like 1 or 2, but the card is really good turn 2 and meh later. This makes you want to play more copies, cutting other good cards and leaving you with a list where sometimes your hand is several Thalias and it's just a clunky mess.
Cpt-Qc
02-04-2019, 02:15 AM
2 Isn't enough. I think 3 is the sweet spot and I believe it's achievable but you indeed have to cut other good cards. The question is does she create enough non-games to offset for the fact that she's much weaker in games that go long.
Skizz
02-04-2019, 04:15 AM
THC = if you want her effect constantly you have to play 3 (maybe 3/3 split of both thalias)
but you get really punished if opp has karakas in play...
Mindcensor "was" sweet back then, but nowadays bird is too slow and dies too quick reg. only having 1 thoughness (DoN, ZP, Toxic,Golgari Ch, etc.)
Megadeus
02-04-2019, 06:18 AM
IDK about now, but when I played THC as a 3of I loved it. With exalted it's almost unbeatable on the battlefield and it singlehandedly is a house against a few strategies. Even when it's not game breaking it's still a good attacker that can get you in a few solid shots while slowing the opponent down a bit. I fully support. Even against Karakas it comes in tapped and gives you a window to waste before it gets active. I do think I played it before angler was as heavily used as it is now though so factor that in. It's probably the only regularly played creature that can Trump it in fair matches.
Mr. Safety

So I'm not sure what I would replace the Mindcensors with. I am a little low on SFM right now, but I could be convinced to play all 4. Here is my starting list, keeping in mind that I haven't played anything like this in at least 3 years.
4x Knight of the Reliquary
3x Mother of Runes
3x Birds of Paradise
3x Aven Mindcensor
2x Stoneforge Mystic

3x Arid Mesa
1x Taiga
1x Savannah
2x Forest
2x Plains
1x Karakas
1x Maze of Ith
4x Wasteland
4x Grove of the Burnwillows
Sideboard (super rough)
2x Enlightened Tutor
1x Grafdigger's Cage
1x Oblivion Ring
1x Ethersworn Canonist
1x Containment Priest
2x Pyroblast

1x Sigarda, Host of Herons
2x Blessed Alliance
3x Choke

That's a very strange list, these are the first questions that came to my mind:
Why Arid Mesa over Wooded Foothills? You have Dryad Arbor...
Why 2 Qasali Pridemage instead of the split with Knight of Autumn?
I also think you can cut a Plains for a Plateau and then go down to 3 Grove of the Burnwillows and 3 Wasteland to add some other useful utility lands, like Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage or Horizon Canopy. I think 22 lands + Dryad Arbor is enough
Aren't just 3 Birds of Paradise not enough? I think turn 1 you always want to play either mana accelerant (BoP, Hierarch or GSZ to grab Dryad) or Mother of Runes. I would add the fourth bird or one Noble Hierarch
Cards that you can consider also: Ramunap Excavator, Tireless Tracker, Renegade Rallier, Sylvan Safekeeper, Sylvan Library. I also run some non creature spells, because we don't play Thalia, Guardian of Thraben so we unlock some useful cards like Life from the Loam or Crop Rotation.
In the sideboard, I think that 3 Chokes are too many, 2 are enough. Surely you need 2 or 3 Surgical Extractions, but you can also consider playing Thalia, Guardian of Thraben for those matchups in which Punishing Fire is useless (ANT, S&T, TES, ...)
Mr. Safety
02-04-2019, 11:36 AM
I do have an Excavator, easy one. I'll cut a Mindcensor for it. Arid Mesa over Foothills is because of card availability, don't have Foothills. Horizon Canopy, same, card availability is nill. Two pridemages was because of mana curve, I was thin at 2 mana for creatures. If its correct to play Knight I will get one and do that. Fourth birds is completely reasonable, I would likely cut the Ajani for it. I also have the Safekeepers/Library's. I didn't know if Safekeeper was necessary with Mother of Runes already in the deck.
So initial changes I will definitely do:
-1 Ajani Vengeant
+1 Birds
-1 Aven Mindcensor
+1 Ramunap Excavator
-1 Grove
-1 Punishing Fire
+2 Sylvan Library
-1 Plains
+1 Plateau (once I get one, working on it)
Sideboard
+2 Surgical
+1 Ajani Vengeant
-1 Sigarda
-2 Blessed Alliance
Thanks for the feedback! I have been away from this style of deck for a long time, it really helps. I was poking through lists on here and I assembled one based on current card availability.
alvoi
02-04-2019, 04:23 PM
Yeah, every Maverick deck is thin at 2 mana creatures, but that's okay. Just t1 dork and t2 three mana drop, easy
Library is really bad in multiples, so 1 is enough. I play 4 Mom and 1 Safekeeper, I think is a bit too much but you can play 3 Mom and 1 Safekeeper in my opinion.
Why do you play Ajani Vengeant in the sideboard? I think the right planeswalker is Garruk Relentless, very powerful in this deck.
My current sideboard is:
1 Knight of Autumn
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
2 Red Elemental Blast
3 Surgical Extraction
2 Council's Judgment
2 Choke
1 Bojuka Bog
KoA is there because I split 1/1 KoA/QP in maindeck. Thalia can be cut to three copies, but she is too good against combo. Obviously REB can be also Pyroblast. Council's Judgment because I HATE TNN. Bojuka Bog is fine, I have 1x Crop Rotation in maindeck but it's good also without it (with 4x Knight of the Reliquary...)

Ajani Vengeant is just a pet card, I'm always trying to cram it into decks. My fun-bias is based on it possibly being good in grindy matchups to lock down individually powerful threats (Gurmag, Tarmogoyf, Griselbrand), cutting off a color by locking down a land, swinging life totals to be favored in a race, and in extreme cases blowing up Miracles/Grixis Control's lands if they deal with my threats. I don't disagree on Garruk Relentless, I love that card and I think it's an underplayed gem as well.
I have some acquiring to do. I need 3-4x Thalia for my sideboard, a Plateau, swap out Arid Mesa for Wooded Foothills, and get some Knight of Autumn copies. Oof, close but still far away, and that's not counting the fact that I don't have Nobles (which are likely pretty important, right?)

I think in this deck you prefer BoP to Hierarch because of the red mana. You need a ton of red mana, and Hierarch doesn't do it. You can still play one or two Hierarchs if you want

Yes 0 chokes. I find as good as it is it's surprisingly very narrow and the matchups it's nuts in is either going to disenchant it or massacre you with their already developed board state. I was playing a swamp in the board for a bit and it was good to cast your 100 black cards in the sb but also kinda janky as fetching it sometimes cut you off other colours if you had an awkward draw and they wasteland you. Tireless Tracker and Renegade Rallier have been great but Ramunap Excavator has been pretty meh except the 1 match a month you get vs something like post and it's the best card in the world.
Rd 1 Death Shadow Delver 1-2
Kinda forget what happens but I just die. Game 2 I win with lage.
These boarding notes kinda overlap for rd 1 and 2 as they are both delver. I've been trying boarding out my Thalias for Delver matchups to help me have room and the ability to cast all these removal spells, playing more of the control plan as if I can get to the late game I believe my cards are more powerful. Thalia also doesn't matchup against delver's creatures at all as they either all fly (delver pteramander), are too big (fish, Shadow) or are too skill-intensive (TNN). It didn't work out this time but it has before. Boarding the Liliana in against a wasteland matchup seems very greedy in my deck with 2 black lands but I decided with the bird, Rallier, and Ramunap acting as ways to get more black, I went for it. This specific delver deck I won't bring in last hope as it misses too much, on that note, they also need to show me they have TNN before I'll consider Zealous. I have enough to deal with TNN that I won't just lose if I don't have Zealous when it catches me by surprise (mother, sofi, dark depths)
-4 Thalia
-1 Gaddock Teeg
-1 Tireless Tracker (This card is great if the game goes long but it is so slow and I have my other late game threats. This is a 3 mana card that wants you to still have a land drop so it's easier to get hit by daze. Then it wants you to dump more mana, all the while not acting as removal or anything)
+1 Liliana, of the Veil
+2 Abrupt Decay
+1 Assassin's Trophy
+2 Thoughtseize
Rd 2 UR Delver 1-2
Game 1 he gets lucky. Turn 1 delver, turn 2 double delver they all flip. The last 2 had a lil help from brainstorm. Game 2 I get lucky. He runs out TNN and I topdeck Liliana of the Veil to edict it. He kills Veil and plays two Pteramander's 1 mana short of pumping. I top deck Liliana the Last Hope. Both Liliana top decks in the correct order. He manages to get the other Liliana off the table too but they have done too much damage and I manage to take the game. Game 3 I get lucky again followed by him getting lucky for the win =p. He has unflipped delver, TNN, Pyromancer and I top deck Zealous. Later in the game he has unflipped delver and I go to equip my guy with sofi and his last card is vapor snag, ok whatever, pass. He flips delver showing light up the stage, gets another delver and ponder off the LUTS and ponder finds another snag and sets up the other delver to flip. I lose.
-4 Thalia
-1 Teeg
-1 Tracker
-1 Ramunap
-1 Pridemage
+1 Liliana Last Hope
+1 Liliana of the Veil
+2 Decay
+1 Trophy
+1 Thoughtseize (I might've cut the Sylvan Library for the 2nd one. I honesly cannot remember and couldn't tell you now which I'd do haha.)
+2 Zealous
Starting 0 - 2 vs Delver twice which I consider a pretty alright matchup for me is disheartening, especially as I sit down against miracles for rd 3
Rd 3 Miracles 2-0
Game 1 Im stuck on Savannah and plains but I have turn 1 mom into turn 2 Teeg into scryb ranger. I get back to basic'd but the scryb ranger lets me pick up savannah as I don't draw lands and play out jitte. He eventually votes teeg off the island but my Jitte wielding ranger kills him before he finds Terminus.
Game 2 it's a bit draw go as I have a bunch of lands and some decays and a zenith Im just going to hold onto. I decay a back to basics at some point, plow a mentor (yes I keep plows in because everyone is on Mentor) and like turn 5 I get to Zenith for Tireless Tracker and play a fetch right away. He removes it at some point but I get 2 clues out of it so hey I guess green Ancestral? He Terminus' my ooze which is fair as it's the only one he sees all match. At some point I get to Nihil Spellbomb in response to AK and draw my card as I take away some of his draw, I also clear his yard of plows for snapcasters later. I forget much else of what happens but I think I just beat him down, miracles seems pretty luke-warm when they don't hit their namesake cards.
-2 Noble
-2 Mother
-1 Ramunap
-1 Plow
+2 Decay
+1 Trophy
+1 Nihil Spellbomb
+2 Thoughtseize
The Liliana's seem very lukewarm in the matchup despite planeswalkers being nuts against miracles. I honestly can't remember if I boarded them in instead of thoughtseize, boarded them in over 2 other cards in my main that I forgot that I cut, or just didn't play them. Sorry my memory is very poor and I need to take better notes but I was 0-2 going into this match that I consider a poor matchup so I didn't think I was going to be writing much of a report. I understand I won game 1 with Mother so cutting 2 seems odd but both this and noble make you play out more into sweepers, I'd rather just rely on my stand alone threats (tracker, knight, etc), hope my opponent is heavily on the mentor plan which I have a ton of removal for, and dodge entreat.
R4-6. Elves, UW Blade, Burn. 6-0, Marit Lage hands me all 6 of these games. I'm not even jk.
Board plan for each:
Elves-
-4 Thalia
-1 Ramunap
-1 Tracker
-1 Library
-1 Pridemage
-1 Mother
-1 SOFI
+2 Zealous
+2 Canonist
+1 Last Hope
+1 Veil
+2 Decay
+2 Thoughtseize
I hate this matchup but boarding feels so good vs it. I didn't really have much hate outside some removal spells, his draws were just a bit too slow as I made Marit Lage before he got me. Game 2 I did have canonist on the final turn but he had heritage druid with 3 elves and Wirewood going on for a bit but nothing to really play.
Burn-
-1 Ramunap
-1 Tireless Tracker
-1 Sylvan Library
-1 Wasteland
+2 Canonist
+2 Decay
My board doesn't have much for burn and it can be tough. Trophy doesn't seem great so I don't bring it in. Was tempted to have Veil or some Thoughtseizes but I don't want to depend too hard on black mana against the price deck. I lean towards not bringing in canonist as it can turn a smash to smithereens rotting in their hand into a searing blaze which is brutal, but my opponent wasn't familiar with my deck game 1. I didn't show him the stoneforge package as I killed him with a 20/20. After all this thought on what to sideboard, I just throw another 20/20 at him.
UW Blade
+1 Veil
+1 Trophy
+2 Thoughtseize
+2 Zealous
+2 Decay
-4 Thalia (notice a trend?)
-1 Teeg
-2 Noble
-1 Ramunap
I think this is how I boarded? Again just want to be able to deal with his threats and still have enough of my own. Both games go pretty much he plows some stuff like mothers, plays tnn, then I lage him (some other stuff happens but this is the jist of it)
I end up going 4-2! 8-0 in games after starting 0-2 in matches felt great.

I just had to say that I found these quotes great haha
I'm surprised all the Miracles are running mentor near you; I haven't been seeing them and assumed that Mentor was deemed unfit for purpose or something. Maybe he's in the side or maybe they just haven't been finding him.

With you siding out Thalia so often do you see the opportunity to play Punishing Maverick as being effective? I am building up the deck and I'm close to optimal for a Punishing build, just a handful of cards away. I would sideboard Thalia, likely 3 of them, to bring in against combo matchups.

I don't think punishing is bad or anything I just like the land base of this one better not having to run Groves, also I'm much more of a fan of black's sideboard cards than red's (except pyroblast is good, but Zealous and Thoughtseize are really strong).

Is 4 Colors too greedy do you think? Or is it just too close to Aggro Loam at that point and should shift gears? Not having targeted discard is the one big part of Punishing Maverick I don't like. I would want Thoughtseize and Siege Rhino (which is just uber-greedy outside of a Nic Fit mana engine.) I think the mana gets substantially more fragile, especially with Groves being part of the mix. Curious what your thoughts are. I could play black or red splashes, no problem, so that isn't the issue. The big part is finding a way to customize a list that fits my style without sacrificing consistency or a stable mana-base.

The mana is just as stable when you go punishing because you'll play more lands anyway but you have to drop black. You'll still be three colors then which will gain you points against fair decks but lose you some against combo.
Mr. Safety
03-14-2019, 02:25 PM
So four color is out? I know the mana is stable with Grove/Punishing list (I play 4 basics as well), just wondering if its even worth it to go 4-color in order to have discard against combo but still have the P-Fire removal engine. I would think 4x Birds and a minimum of 24-25 lands would be necessary.
These are the cards I would want:
2-4x Thoughtseize
1-3x Siege Rhino
1-2x Toxic Deluge
0-2x Abrupt Decay
If those cards aren't worth splashing black, I'll just stick to Punishing Mav. Siege Rhino always impressed me in Nic-Fit as a hard-to-deal-with threat that really punished fair decks. The other cards are self-explanatory.

Playing 4c without mox diamonds is suicide. Even aggro-loam with 4x diamonds and 2x loam can sometimes get stuck on mana if they fetch the wrong color early.

@Mr Safety: the easy answer is that if you could play 4 colors with P Fire then people would already do it. I've played it and seen others do it here but you get a less stable mana base and need to skip Cradle / Depths in my experience.

Thanks for the comments, I'm not even going to try, lol. I'll stick with Punishing Mav for now. One last question: Has anyone played 1x Depths/Stage out of the sideboard in Punishing Mav? I don't want it main, I'm already at 24 lands, but I could see it as an alternative line of attack against certain decks.

I always run 26 lands in Punishing Maverick. That's my girl Marie Lagette and Stage + all of the corny utility lands because why not?
I have no experience playing DD+Stage in the sideboard, but I don't see why it couldn't be good. The alternative is to trim on things like Wasteland (run three instead of four) and basics (only run one of each, maybe two forests at most). People get a little squeamish about trimming Wastelands, but you have KoTR to find them, and giving KoTR more things to do (fetching the combo in this instance) is pretty good.
Happy to see people posting here. Discord is for chumps.

I like the plan of taking the threats into nuclear territory against some fair decks, but doing it out of the sideboard. I was going to start putting in PW's at the upper end of the curve but I think the option of Depths/Stage is (likely) even better. I'm kind of a sucker for jamming Marit Lage into any deck I can. It isn't really a transformational sideboard, it's still rooted in Knight tricks, but it's a different angle of attack. I noticed in some matchups Wasteland isn't great and Depths would at least be another use of those slots, so that would be a place to make room.
Would you mind sharing your list menloe? The allure of utility lands pulls at me as well. Here is my current mix of lands (need to get more copies of Wooded Foothills, possibly another Savannah or at least a Plateau.)
4x Windswept Heath
1x Wooded Foothills
3x Arid Mesa
1x Savannah
1x Taiga
2x Forest
2x Plains
4x Wasteland
1x Maze of Ith
1x Karakas
3x Grove of the Burnwillows
1x Dryad Arbor

With good mana base it's not a problem. Exalted is really good, if you stack exalted every creature will be a thread, with proper tempo, you can press opponent life point from early turns, so in late game you can just burn him with PF.
I was thinking about different approach in Punishing Maverick - does anyone tried more mix with Aggro loam - (1-2 loams MD, Excavator) and ... Exploration in in place hierarch and bop ?

If you look above a few posts, I asked a similar question about a 4-color list. The feedback I received is that without Mox Diamond holding it together it can be very difficult to have stable mana. I think once you go down the path of Exploration you'll notice you want lands that perform as spells to go along with mana-producing lands, which naturally drives you towards an actual Lands list.
It might be interesting to do a Lands hybrid with Knight of the Reliquary. The slots that would have to give would be Gamble and Crop Rotation, which is fine if you're playing functionally 5+ copies of Knight. The same issue applies though to both decks: combo, especially fast combo, will eat you for breakfast. I imagine a core of something like this:
4x Knight
1-2x Excavator
2-3x GSZ
2x Depths
2x Stage
1-3x Loam
4x PFire
4x Exploration
4x Mox Diamond
27+ lands

I don't know that I've seen very many GW or GWb Maverick lists running her either.
It should be easy to slot her in depending on the one-ofs you run. I've slotted her into Punishing Maverick in place of a third SFM, a singleton Aven Mindcensor, Batterskull, etc. I loved her against Elves, which was played locally by someone I hated losing to so I probably tried harder to fit her in. (Nice guy FWIW but he liked to talk about how he beat you as if you didn't just play the fuckin game.)
I think the argument against Birds is it's a sad late game draw and bad in multiples whereas Hierarch gives you that pump no matter when you draw it. Probably no more than 2 Birds is where you want to be.

Just 2 small benefits of playing birds over hierarch: as a flyer it holds sofi/bskull better in combat and it blocks Marit Lage, which i see a lot of locally. It doesn't mean its better than nobles but its a couple things to consider.
EDIT: I have a 1K coming up on April 13th, which I am going to try like hell to attend. I'm torn between taking Pun-Mav and Turbo Depths; I could compromise and sideboard Depths combo in the Pun-Mav list, but I'm not sure I have enough time to learn lines of play. Three weeks isn't really that long, especially considering my testing wouldn't be the most productive (Magic Workstation is my only testing grounds besides goldfishing.)
So my question is: how difficult are the lines of play in this deck to learn?

I'm not sure if you're trolling or not but I'm going to assume not.
This card is useless for us. Yeah it shuts down lands based decks but those are usually already favoured for us. That and it's also white so it cannot be played as a 1of.
Even DnT will rarely use it because their recruiter cannot get it and it looks inferior to Serra Avenger most of the time (maybe in a LGS that's swarmed with lands and depths players). They would never play it in a big event.

I think WW casting cost is the real killer at least for me personally. It's certainly a powerful effect, but like was said, most of the matchups this card shines Maverick already seems favored. The actual best part of this is that it flies and therefore can trade with a delver imo. If it were GW I could see it being a one of in heavy depths metas, as is I don't think it's even worth being in the Maverick box

Why? There are plenty of non-green threats that get ran at less than 4-of in almost every Maverick list I've ever seen. I've never seen any lists running hatebears in the sideboard as 4-of's either. Your post adds literally no value to the discussion.
I agree with Mega that the WW cost is pretty prohibitive for Maverick. Still, the body size is nicely costed and the text is relevant against a number of common matchups, so I'm not sure it should get completely written off. It likely isn't good enough here, but I do think it will see some play in D&T.

The issue here is that what Tomik does, KotR already does, allthough that is a slight oversimplification. Tomik doesn't replace KotR. There are 4 GSZ to get extra KotR's, you already have plenty of this type of functionality. Tomik's effect is certainly useful, but not useful enough to motivate several copies. If Tomik was GSZ-able, that might motivate using him as a one of in the sb. Because a relatively low impact can be traded for high availability. When choosing to play other non-green bears, or other permanents, they have lower "availability" by not being GSZ-able but much higher impact on your bad matchups. Like Heretic Cathar, helping vs Elves and Sneak attack. (this example is still too low impact to see regular play)

Flying is likely the best text on the card, and what makes it borderline playable. In testing I have really liked Aven Mindcensor, which has an arguably better ability, but the reason for playing things like AM and Birds of Paradise is the same reason you would want this: a flying blocker. This happens to also have an ability that affects the Marit Lage decks; opponent's can't even combo with Stage/Depths. Add to that a laundry list of abilities that it stops from Lands like Wasteland, Ports, Stage copying lands, Ghost Quarter and you have pretty decent tech against that particular deck. I'm not saying it's a shoe-in or a 4-of, but it's definitely a consideration due to flying. If you're banking on Knights getting Maze/Karakas to deal with Marit Lage but Lands has found a line to deal with those cards (not unlikely) you now at least have a flyer that needs to be dealt with that is out of PFire range. I think the cost is prohibitive if you are on any splash color but on straight GW I think it's doable.
With all that said, I still don't see it as a likely candidate for Maverick. If zoo were still a deck I would say it would be fantastic as a way to fight Lands, but I haven't seen zoo in ages. Death and Taxes already has like 20 maindeck ways to interact with Lands/Depths already. I think its pretty hiliarious in the D&T mirror match, most likely a way to break the matchup wide open for the first one to land it.

Is there an argument in less blue metas and more non blue to play that guy over say, Thalia in the main deck? Fortunately it's WW so blue decks can't adopt it, but it does make it a bit harder for us

Maybe I was too categorical in my last post, trying to explain the perspective provided in an earlier post. If there's a lot of Lands and Turbo Depths in your area, maybe you can motivate one md or sb or even two, though I think there are probably better options with wider application. Like for example adding Rest in Peace/Scavenging Ooze to battle Loam and/or extra Path to Exile to answer Marit Lage. These can also be used vs Reanimator, Phoenix and Eldrazi.
Furthermore, I think Maverick is usually pretty good vs non-blue decks, so I'm not sure how a list should be updated based on that. And if it's a fair non-blue meta I guess it's just a matter of time before someone puts together a combo deck to benefit from that..

Won a 5 round legacy 1k here in Vancouver. This was my list.
4 Mother of Runes
4 Noble Hierarch
1 Birds of Paradise
4 Stoneforge Mystic
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Scryb Ranger
1 Gaddock Teeg
4 Knight of the Reliquary
1 Knight of Autumn
1 Palace Jailer
4 Green Sun's Zenith
4 Swords to Plowshares
1 Batterskull
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
1 Dark Depths
1 Thespian's Stage
4 Wasteland
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Horizon Canopy
1 Karakas
2 Forest
1 Plains
2 Savannah
1 Bayou
1 Scrubland
4 Windswept Heath
3 Verdant Catacombs
1 Marsh Flats
2 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Qasali Pridemage
4 Assassin's Trophy
1 Path to Exile
1 Zealous Persecution
2 Thoughtseize
1 Inquisition of Kozilek
2 Surgical Extraction
1 Nihil Spellbomb
Not a fan of Ramunap atm and postboard I usually throw the mana denial plan out the window (also why there's 0 chokes). Stoneforge + Skull and Marit Lage were MVPs. Really enjoying the 4 SFM at the moment. I rolled a die to determine if my last slot should be library, jailer, or sigarda. Jailer won but it didn't matter as I never drew it. Don't own a 3rd Lor Foil Thoughtseize so I played an IoK and it almost lost me the finals as it whiffed a sneak attack. Didn't really take notes so don't have much of a tournament report but in swiss I beat lands, UR Delver with 4 TNN main and splashing black for SB Bitterblossom, and mono red storm. Then I was able to draw draw into top 8. The top 8 was pretty clowny, it was-
Maverick (me)
DNT
Lands
Elves
That UR Delver deck (different player than I played in swiss, same 75 though)
Sneak and Show
Manaless Dredge x2
In top 8 I beat Manaless, Lands, then Sneak and Show. I felt the benefits of playing the 4 trophy over any decays when I played vs lands twice.

Question how was 4 x Assasin's Trophy in SB - looks like a lot, specially with 1 x Path to Exile, in which case you side in those. I think it's bit too much specially that you use only 1 real answer (Zealous Persecioution) vs TNN. What was a propose in this SB plan ?

You get to bring Trophy in vs more decks than decay and have it be better. Like lands, sneak, depths, reanimator, 4c loam, etc. There's trade offs with decay in the sense that if you go trophy target mentor and they counter it you can pretty much just scoop, but the alternative is they walk all over you with Jace as you stare at decay. I've heard "Trophying Jace is bad as they already brainstormed and now get a land, so are up cards" yeah sure, but again the alternative is to just die to their active jace.
The path slot was originally Liliana of the Veil (I've tested Last Hope as well), it was very good and filled holes in some matchups, but BB was just too greedy esp when you needed her vs decks with either wasteland or b2b. It could've been ZP #2 but while it hits TNN it misses -most- of the other stuff out of delver. I'm already favoured vs DNT, and I'd still be unfavoured vs elves so I'd rather just dodge it. Vs Delver I pretty much just want to survive until I can get my much more stronger threats online and one of the main ways I die is an uncontested delver, so I board out my Thalia's and bring in a bunch of point click removal most of the time. Decay would be better than trophy in this specific matchup at executing this plan as I'd have an uncounterable way to kill delver but decay is just such a weak card in a lot of matchups that Trophy is strong in. As for TNN I played against Delver with 4 TNN in the main and beat 2 TNN game one and a TNN game 2. Dark Depths goes a long way in outracing TNN and makes your knight a real threat again, SOFI and mother help as well as maindeck ways around it.
The path is def. the flex slot in the SB though.

In regards to playing Stage/Depths in Maverick, does anyone play Crop Rotation alongside it? I am still on the Punishing plan and I want to sideboard 1 Depths/Stage so I can have a way to close games fast, especially against combo decks. I'm a long-time turbo depths player and I absolutely love the versatility of Crop Rotation. I know Maverick is essentially a Knight of the Reliquary deck, but is there an argument for redundancy, such as 1-2 copies of Crop Rotation, that also tutors up lands faster? I'm thinking Bojuka Bog/Karakas as early as turns 1-2 rather than getting Knight t2, dig out land t3.
Thoughts from the excellent Maverick community?

I haven't play tested it at all, but this was where I left off when I was developing a Depths list:
GW Maverick Depths
Lands (28)
4 Windswept Heath
1 Verdant Catacombs
1 Marsh Flats
4 Savannah
1 Forest
1 Plains
1 Horizon Canopy
1 Karakas
1 Seijiri Steppe
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 Bojuka Bog
2 Wasteland
4 Thespian's Stage
4 Dark Depths
1 Dryad Arbor
Creatures (20)
4 Weathered Wayfarer
4 Mother of Runes
1 Sylvan Safekeeper
1 Scryb Ranger
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Qasali Pridemage
1 Gaddock Teeg
2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Knight of the Reliquary
1 Ramunap Excavator
Spells (12)
4 Green Sun's Zenith
4 Crop Rotation
4 Swords to Plowshares
It might be better if I added a black splash, especially since I already have Bojuka Bog and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth... but like I said, this list is untested and I stopped working on it a while ago to pursue other interests.
EDIT: Maybe I should find a way to fit in a Gaea's Cradle. Crop Rotation for Cradle could potentially be better/faster than Crop Rotation for Urborg to speed up the combo? Not really sure...

Cool list, something I might work on depending on where I land. It looks like your plan was to utilize Weathered Wayfarer and Crop Rotation alongside the Knights as redundancy for tutoring Depths/Stage. I think it's a cool idea, basically trading one type of tutor for another (Wayfarer for Sylvan Scrying) and going with the alternative Knight beats plan. It gives me some ideas for templating, but I'm on the other side of the hybrid coin. You're attempting a combo deck with an alternative Maverick plan, I'm going for a Maverick plan with the option to combo out of the board. Its important to note that I'm not necessarily on Thalia's either (not maindeck with the Punishing Fire plan.) I am debating a few directions to approach combo matchups: ETutor package, Depths/Stage, and 3-4x Thalia. All are reasonable I think, but Thalia seems to be the route most Punishing lists take. I also have 3 flex spots in the maindeck that I could work with (2x Sylvan Library, 1x Maze of Ith) that could become other cards. Crop Rotation was one of the options to replace Library, and Library could go to the sideboard. Maze is likely correct in the maindeck, but with 4x Swords, 3x PFire, and a Karakas already in there it isn't as critical.
List for reference (rough):
4x Knight of the Reliquary
3x Mother of Runes
2x Stoneforge Mystic
3x Aven Mindcensor
3x Birds of Paradise
1x Qasali Pridemage
1x Reclamation Sage
1x Scavenging Ooze
1x Ramanup Excavator
1x Gaddock Teeg
1x Scryb Ranger
4x Green Sun’s Zenith
4x Swords to Plowshares
3x Punishing Fire
1x Umezawa’s Jitte
1x Sword of Fire and Ice
2x Sylvan Library
4x Windswept Heath
1x Wooded Foothills
3x Arid Mesa
1x Savannah
1x Taiga
3x Grove of the Burnwillows
2x Forest
2x Plains
4x Wasteland
1x Karakas
1x Maze of Ith
1x Dryad Arbor
Sideboard
2x Surgical Extraction
2x Enlightened Tutor
1x Oblivion Ring
1x Tormod’s Crypt
1x Ethersworn Canonist
2x Pyroblast
1x Nissa, Vital Force
1x Ajani Vengeant
2x Choke
1x Dark Depths
1x Thespian’s Stage

Yeah, the plan for my list is definitely to make a 20/20, facilitated in a Maverick shell. The deck gives up a bit of speed compared to a normal Turbo Depths list, but makes up for it with a significantly better backup plan of creature beats. The inspiration for me was the fact that I wanted to abuse Weathered Wayfarer, and this seemed like the best shell to do that with.
The other goal was to try and improve some of Turbo Depths difficult matchups, although I'm not sure what those even are anymore.
I think going forward, I'd be interested in splashing black for Thoughtseize, Zealous Persecution, Assassin's Trophy, and Abrupt Decay in the sideboard.
I also think Cabal Pit would be a great card to have to beat Mother of Runes mirrors...

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn with this: I think at that point you would just be a worse 'slow' depths list, even slower than the Mox Diamond lists. I agree that the backup plan is robust with Knight beats and a GSZ toolbox, however as a Turbo player I have found the deck able to fight on a value/grind plan very well as-is. I tried Nic Fit w/Depths, 'Slow Depths' (w/DRS when it was legal), and even BG Rock splash Depths (Goyfs, Bobs, DRS, Hymns, etc.) I perceived the deck as needing a better value plan when all I really needed to do was get my sideboard in order. Of all the variants I found Turbo Depths to be the best version at going fast g1 while still having a good grind plan post-board. Depths matchups I see as being difficult are Moon Stompy, Aggro Loam, Miracles, and Death and Taxes. Without knowledge of what the good matchups are for Maverick, I couldn't tell you how well it fairs against those decks.
I think the approach of Weathered Wayfarer is very cool, and potentially very good. It's another angle of toolbox-ing lands that is redundant with Knights. I think the card that really shines in your list is Mother of Runes; theres a reason Sylvan Safekeeper is so important to Turbo Depths, it's an on-color protection for Marit Lage. Having white available for Mother and Swords to Plowshares is spicy as hell. I don't think I'm ready to give up on the PFire plan just yet, it's so good against the fair decks. The Depths plan for me is specifically to shore up what I guess are bad combo matchups for Maverick, basically an 'oops I win' button if I can disrupt with early without giving opponents a chance to climb back.

It's all good, I'm perfectly fine with the criticism. It's an untested brew. I just thought Weathered Weathered was an incredibly strong card that can tutor up both pieces of the combo itself, and tried to build a deck around it. You asked about Crop Rotation, so I posted my list.
Of the bad matchups you listed, I think Miracles is the only one that would be difficult, given the fact that regular Maverick struggles with that matchup, so the hybrid plan likely doesn't do much to improve it. Although with that said, Weathered Wayfarer as a card advantage engine could potentially make that matchup better, so maybe. Also, the large creature package here could possibly stretch their removal too thin to be able to deal with a well-timed 20/20, but I don't really know.
The rest of the bad matchups seem like they should be pretty good for a Maverick hybrid deck, but then again, there may be some good matchups for Turbo Depths that become much worse, so ultimately it could just be a wash.
It was definitely a fun idea to brew with, though.

Never played punishing but it probably gets better against Miracles, but probably worse against the combo decks, and elves it maybe gets a slight bump up but probably nothing significant.

Im a long year Maverick player, especially Punmav and I can tell you Elves is really OKAY with pfire. Its not great, but not even nearly as bad as Belcher or Tinfins. But tbh Belcher and Tinfins will loose to any blue deck and win to any nonblue deck so we shouldnt care about those MUs. And for Miracels (as well as Elves) I found Chalice of the Void to be really really good in the SB.
BR Reanimator is bad but if you really feel you need extra hate against them you can improve that MU really much by adding Tormods Cryp or even Leylines to the SB since they are much better for that MU than surgical/faerie marcabre. Anyway I dont think its worse it because we can as well win the MU in the fair way if they dont have the T1/2 Grisel even thou its still a bad MU. Right now I feel like Maverick is really really great positioned in the metagame with all those fair blue decks dominating the format.

Hey the issue with O-Ring is that it can also target YOUR permanents. Say they have a Baleful Strix on the field and you have a Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. If you cast an Oblivion Ring and in response your opponent casts Fatal Push on the Strix, your only target now is your own Gideon. Feels bad.
Banishing Light thankfully can only target your opponents permanents and without Flickerwisp in the deck we cannot abuse the wording of O-Ring (as you said).

As said in food chain thread: the new white knight is interesting. He fetches mother of runes and mana dork, beats for 3 or 4 exalted, then sacrifices to protect sideboard pieces as choke. Also is a house versus storm and terminus.
Would you play 4x in a new "more white" list of maverick?

Been playing heretic again over slower cards like tracker/jailer because I just want to aggro people out and there's so many basics so making their fetches come in tapped makes wasteland decent again. Jailer also feels awkward when you're either staring at a fast clock or a Narset. Back on decays over trophies as there is a bunch of delver or mentor etc. Missing Jace sucks when they sweeper you and trophy is actually good vs the post decks but I feel I can beat the post decks already and I have choke back to help fight the Jace decks. Pridemage back in the main over Knight of Autumn just to be more aggro. I'm always on Dark Depths over Cradle/SoLaS (so your mana doesn't actually get hurt playing it), it just steals games I have no right winning or don't want to slog through, like tnn, nicfit, or vs goblins etc you can either try to win in 100 turns as they play multiple ringleaders and you slog through a bunch of guys or just toss 20 damage in the air. It just makes untapping with knight a good enough threat again as now she doesn't do almost nothing staring at a TNN or can be left back as a blocker vs burn and still end the game.
MVPs of the event were Heretic and Dark Depths.
Rd 1 Red Prison
2-0
Game 1 I have fetches for basics and teeg + thalia slow him down and take him out of the game as he doesn't have much going on outside of chalice 1 and moon.
Game 2 he goes turn 1 sol land, lotus petal, Blood moon. I have basic forest and birds of paradise. He's stuck on 1 land for a bit. I drop Thalia, then knight, next turn knight gets depths and I decay his moon and he gets Laged so even though he was starting to draw lands again the game ended too quickly.
Rd 2 vs Goblins
2-1
Ah yes two rounds in a row I play against mono red that thinks it's too good to play lightning bolt ;3.
Game 1 I mull to 4 and keep 2 lands zenith sofi which is a pretty solid 4 but I still just get run over and die
Game 2 I forget what else happens but a quick marit lage kills him
Game 3 I turn 2 heretic cathar which slows him down a bunch and I just beat him down with dudes until he dies.
Rd 3 Miracles
2-0
Game 1 he has 10000 plows and some Terminus. I'm playing dude after dude. He has a narset on 1 sitting on the board for forever but I'm just going face. At one point I swing with noble double exalted and he gang blocks with 2 snapcasters and I plow one to keep my noble. He eventually succumbs to nobles.
Game 2 he has nothing I just choke him and he dies
Only 5 rounds so I double draw into top 8
Quarters Goblins again same guy
2-0
Game 1 I play a dork and he leads off into basic mountain pass, I play a turn 2 heretic and he only has nonbasics left in hand. I play a knight and wasteland him and the turn after I play Ramunap. Hard game.
Game 2 I just clown him with Marit Lage. Also he went turn 1 vial, I went turn 1 bird. His turn 2 he played port and when he ported me in my upkeep I decayed his vial and he didn't have a 1 drop to put in, so that felt very good.
Semi's U/W Blade
1-2 :(
Game 1 it's my turn to get clowned by TNN
Game 2 I do everything in my power to throw the game away but I still somehow win by getting him to 1 and then on his endstep fetching arbor and staging it to get around his blocker.
Game 3 I get clowned by Jace
The deck felt good. Didn't cast thoughtseize all day but stuff like that happens, when MH1 hits I was planning on running 2 Plague Engineer main and Ouphe probably in the board but Heretic has been doing pretty well I'm not sure I want to cut her haha. Also not sure if I want to play UW sword, I cut SoLaS a long time ago because it was mostly Sword of Healing Salve in the matchups you brought it in, but UW sword is a 2nd sword to get around TNN while also getting around mentor and topdecked plows. Sword of two +1/+1 counters is also better than Sword of Healing Salve ;3. I was also thinking of testing a GB Horizon Land and getting an extra spellslot back over Stage/Depths but Marit Lage has been too good for me to want to cut.

As a Punishing Maverick player I've been thinking about this as well. PFire does a similar effect of repeated removal and Ramanup Excavator can be dug out with GSZ, but the efficiency of W&6 is absurd. I'm not sure how many it could support, the only open slots I could foresee would be the Sylvan Library slots, which play a much different role.

W6 pairs with Punishing Fire beautifully as well, the two cards combined allow you to deal 3 damage to a creature every turn, or 5 damage to a creature every other turn (enough to take out Angler) is enough to completely shut down opposing creatures.

It's worth noting that fetching a cycle dual (with either KotR or fetchland) and then saccing it to KotR enables W&6 as draw engine. Might be a bit clunky at times, but the opportunity cost is low to run it.

The cycling dual land is an interesting idea. I just happen to have a copy of Sheltered Thicket in my binder to try that out. I am also trying out Elvish Reclaimer x1 as a GSZ target, and it accomplishes close to the same effect as with Knight. I think Horizon Canopy is probably still strictly better, but it's a line the deck could take. I have a utility land slot I've been messing around with, currently with Maze of Ith but I'm also considering Sejiri Steppe and now this cycling enabler (with W&6.)
Mr. Safety
07-30-2019, 09:44 AM
Observations after just a few test games with Reclaimer:
He's faster on the board for Knight-like tricks, essentially Knight #5. I think W&6 will pair very well with both knight and Reclaimer. I've been using Excavator, but that is slow at 4 mana (gsz is the only reliable way to dig it out.) W&6 should fit really well on curve here. Tested against depths, an already good matchup, but now its a bloodbath.
I think Bojuka Bog needs to be in the sideboard now, and the synergy of Wren + Reclaimer/Knight is huge. Together they TCrypt every turn while fetching out wastelands to lock things up or just make knights bigger, letting her attack sooner if you have both.
Reclaimer trading *any land* for what you need has made it very good with Grove. The 2nd grove is far less dissapointing now. Now i need a couple W&6, i'm pretty sure it will prove to be amazing.

Until I can get my hands on Scroll of Fate for Dreadstill I'm going to be playing Punishing Maverick. I am up to the full 4 copies of Punishing Fire, which has been good in a small sample of testing. I pretty much want one in every game. Below is my list which I'm taking to a weekly legacy event tomorrow night, usually around 12-15 people in attendance with a good mix of decks.
4x Knight of the Reliquary
3x Mother of Runes
3x Stoneforge Mystic
4x Birds of Paradise
1x Qasali Pridemage
1x Ramanup Excavator
1x Gaddock Teeg
1x Scavenging Ooze
1x Knight of Autumn
1x Elvish Reclaimer
4x Green Sun’s Zenith
4x Swords to Plowshares
4x Punishing Fire
1x Umezawa’s Jitte
1x Batterskull
1x Sword of Fire and Ice
2x Sylvan Library
4x Windswept Heath
1x Wooded Foothills
2x Arid Mesa
1x Savannah
1x Taiga
1x Plateau
3x Grove of the Burnwillows
2x Forest
1x Plains
4x Wasteland
1x Karakas
1x Maze of Ith
1x Dryad Arbor
Sideboard
2x Surgical Extraction
2x Ethersworn Canonist
2x Oblivion Ring
2x Pyroblast
1x Blessed Alliance
1x Ajani Vengeant
2x Choke
2x Aven Mindcensor
1x Nissa, Vital Force
Sideboard is a mess, I just threw some things in there to cover some matchups. PW's are for grindy matchups, Pyroblasts/ORings are for Show and Tell, Surgical for Reanimator and Dredge, Choke for blue decks, Blessed Alliance for TNN, and Mindcensors for anything that searches a ton (Lands, Depths, slower decks like Miracles to stop fetches.) Maze might need to be another colored mana source, not sure yet.

Thoughts:
Oko is strong, but the package can be cut. Tropical Island at times was a strain on mana, flew into Back to Basics and Blood Moon. I am going to test removing both Oko and the Trop for another basic island. I felt decent in most match up, I made a ton of mistakes but that is part of learning the deck. I am going to cut Tabernacle, one Teeg and probably the Crop Rotation out of the main to get some Veil of Summer in. Also looking at Elvish Reclaimer for redundancy. Going to test against Bant Mircales and Bant snow varieties this Thursday.

I think of the red splash often. I am still very new to the deck however and I would like my progression to be natural so I am not gonna run it yet. Questing Beast was a decent top end beater. It snagged some surprise wins or died instantly to removal. Gitrog was a "big beater and card draw" tester that rarely made an impact. I ended up cutting it to get back down to 60 in the MD after the event. MD Ouphe came into play often, it was a suggestion from Joe Brennan, who came to the 1k I hosted the day prior at my LGS. We chatted about the deck, and while it isn't his forte he made some choice suggested and actually ended up playing Death and taxes at the Sunday event. Blast Zone was nice to have. I had a clutch play on Saturday against Death and Taxes where the board state was him (2 lands, Mom and pithing needle on Oko) me (a few lands, Oko and crop rotation into zone and immediately crack to kill mom and needle and have Oko run the game over afterwards). it was just once thought. I think about cutting a color to shore up the mana a bit, getting a third basic in the list is a big thing for me, I hit a lot of back to basics, wastelands and blood moons, so mitigating that is important even in such a land tutor deck.

While I realize that metas call for different builds/splashes, I’m curious what the most popular splash(es) are as of late? Oko seems good for a host of reasons. But I can also see a lot of value in the more grindy red splash for Punishing Fire. Black seems to offer more controlling aspects.

Anyone else here feeling like we really need that new 5mana Vivien as a SB Card for control MUs?
She`s so great. Making tokens while also allowing to play creatures from top is really rough CA.

Been watching videos again as I try and jump back in online. This new Snoko crap seems like insane value. Thinking of ways to deal with it makes me think black splash is needed for cards like Abrupt Decay. Also Leovold seems decent as a one of GSZ target if we have a birds or something that can generate Blue too. I know losing DRS made that a much harder plan.
I almost think with Oko I wouldn’t want the Stoneforge package due to how crazy it would blow up on us. In that case almost want to run a second Scryb ranger for IceFang, Oko, Strix, Delvers. Also think a Slyvan Safekeeper might be needed now as a way to protect against Oko.
Am I just too afraid of Oko, is he really that dumb? Forgive me I’ve been out of touch since before even DRS got the ban hammer.
Forgive me I’ve been out of touch since before even DRS got the ban hammer.
Most people playing Knight of the Reliquary have moved more toward either Aggo Loam (https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/3130174) or Dryad-Titan (https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/3130165) decks.
Here though (https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/3124921) is a different approach, closer to Maverick, with the added spice of Oath of Ghouls.
I don't think Oko is a huge problem, but it is an issue for the deck as it was formerly constructed though, as in the DRS days. It is a whole different meta now.

Hey Jm, I think the GreenSunsZenith.com's budget build for Maverick is still tuned pretty well for starting out with the deck. There are a few new inclusions you could include from sets released since it was published but the core is fantastic.

What do you all think about Mirran Crusader as a solution to the Oko meta?
Notice the text: "protection from green". Can't be Elked. Can't be blocked by Elks. Murders attacking Elks.
Also can't be blocked by surprise Coatl or Uro. Incidental Goyfs and Mandrills are irrelevant. Immune to Decay, Push, and Dismember.
You can curve it out turn 2 with Noble Hierarch. With exalted, it can 1-shot a resolved Oko.
It has some other interesting format interactions. For example, he smashes through a resolved Griselbrand for 4-6, so the opponent can't afford to greedily -14 with the 7/7 on defense. That threat could buy enough tempo to dig into Karakas. Crusader also can't be blocked by Marit Lage (or chumped by Hexmage).

I've seen a lot of players try Mirran Crusader this spring but for some reason it never seems to stay in the decks. Right now I think it's because arcanist and bolts in RUG Delver, being the seemingly best deck right now, make it very poorly positioned.

The deck ran pretty well and certainly no one expected Bolts, in fact, every opponent explicitly said it out loud! I changed a couple cards, the only one that mattered was putting one Ethersworn Canonist in place of a Silence.
Round 1, I beat UR Prowess in three. Game 1, I kept a marginal 7, fail to draw any lands, get my mana dork killed and lose by the time I could cast anything relevent. Game 2, I get a timely Bolt though on a Swiftspeak allowing me to make an Ooze and Wasteland pinning him on a Basic Mountain. From there it was close but I draw lands and cast things and he doesn't. Game 3, another timely couple removal spells gives me time to double Wasteland, he gets stuck on a Islet, which just can't keep up as I cast bodies.
Round 2, I beat BUGw Food Chain in three. I get super lucky game 1, which takes forever, as he assembles Food Chain plus double Griffin and Scourge. I have nothing to really stop him, but he had to burn a Ballista early to clear my board, so eventually I make a Knight, then Klothys and get a Wasteland for the Karakas that was holding back my Thalia and Beast. Then I make more Knights and I beat through the recurring blockers while I sweat every one of his topdecks, but finally get there. Game 2, I have a reasonable hand but one Decay and he Food Chains me on turn 3. Game 3 I get a timely Wasteland, his mana gets awkward and he finds Food Chain, but can't find a payoff.
Round 3, I beat Death and Taxes in three. Game 1 I missequence things, getting out a turn 2 Oophe, when I am pretty sure I should have played Pridemage first, since there is a fair chance he might have StP. He did and I end up losing to Jitte sweeping my dorks, although maybe it didn't matter what I did really (because he could have likely killed the Pridemage before playing the Jitte). Game 2 I can't quite remember, but I think I managed to Apparition an equipment and then beat in with Knight. Game 3 I forget how Apparition works, but luckily I have StP so the Batterskull still gets dealt with, in a roundabout way.
Obviously we are into new meta territory, but I kind of like this approach, although it will remain to be seen if the Red splash it really worth it. But I luckily audibled to this at the last moment, having not played in a while and that is something I need to remember, personally, to just (when it doubt) play Dude Sweats™ because it is fairly straight forward. Also, it is just fun to beat people with a Plateau in the deck.

The red splash from years' past did sometimes include Punishing Fires - could be worth swapping out from Lightning Bolt for the extra grind. Easy to trim some pieces for 3 Grove. You probably change the creature suite up a bit to compensate, but I think the bones are there. Especially since Strix is a card again.

I do wish I had a main decked plague engineer probably over an endurance. Sanctum prelate could probably be lost from the board as it ended up being amazing when it needed to be but was very meh otherwise. Heartwood storyteller worked out better then I hoped. Not really sure what else to say about my list. I feel like the smog combo is better then a stoneforge package simply by creating an opportunity to win on a different axis. I think it becomes the future of the deck. I also think undermountain adventurer may be a better choice over the jailer. There were times when I felt very mana intensive.

1 questions beast
What is this creature?
Does it have vigilance or deathtouch?
Is it affected by summoning sickness?
Can it be blocked by a Grizzly Bears?
Can its combat damage be prevented with Fog?
How many abilities does it have?
