A deck without DRS? I am sceptical this is a thing. Who won?

Don't panic, the timeshifted round 6 match was DRS vs DRS again.
I woke up early to watch this, but I am already done with it. Watching the same deck/45 cards round after round gets boring. That's probably why at 5 am PST there were over 12,000 viewers and now it is down to 7,000 viewers.

I still say the way to fix the format is to ban stuff until Slide and Zoo are playable.
And honestly, the best way to do that is to hit the blue creatures and every card with the word "storm" on it.

That was a pretty disappointing day of Magic, to be honest. It felt like Leovold vs Delver and NOTHING ELSE (except we had Sneak that one time).
I'm not one to advocate for bans; and I even play 4c Pile myself, but I am starting to get on board with the "DRS gotta go" train :(
Please day 2 have some cool stuff to watch.

As much as I love Astral Slide, I am so glad the Source is not the arbiter of the legacy banned list.
Well, Mr. Morgan_coke manages to mention his love for astral slide in virtually every post. Devotion.
I’m certainly no better. I recently found myself wondering how long the trip would be to Alabama for this event. Typical American, I suppose.

Sneak and show won :)
There was one exciting thing in this match: the grixis delver guy was playing bomat courrier main :)

I'm ok with not banning anything in grixis delver as long as they are required to run 4 md bomat courier.

A few interesting rounds, but there is way too much Grixis Delver and Czech Pile on camera. Is that the actual metagame at Birmingham? Is it what WotC thinks we want to see? I'm hoping it's the latter. The last few major events haven't been nearly as inbred as this looks to be.

Why not ban delver since all of the delver decks have coalesced into one deck? I feel like it's low risk and high upside

I was hoping to see talk about if Lands was played not what to ban. I thought we had a thread for that.

People are tired of the endless DRS clusterfuck that the format has become.

Maybe they are priming us to swallow an upcoming ban?

Wacky miracles deck on camera was cool. Post board had Delver, and ran Daze mainboard.

Top 8 looks to be
Grixis Delver
Grixis Delver
Grixis Delver
Czech Pile ft Kess
Czech Pile ft beta duals
LED Dredge
Steel Stompy
Dragon Stompy

Grixis Delver
Grixis Delver
Czech Pile ft Kess
Czech Pile ft beta duals
So 5 times essentially the same shit. If they don't ban DRS now, I don't know anymore.
Also, Steel Stompy!

If I had of been playing Mono Red in that match I would have left in Chalice over 3ball. Chalice on 2 destroys Bots

Fast Dredge decks are something I thought would be pretty good in this Delver/Pile infested meta that relies heavily on DRS plus Surgical as gravehate. Evidently somebody else agreed with this take, and did well for themselves.

Both the semis and the finals were great matches. It was also a nice touch having all those people cheering for him in the background. We've seen much more awkward victory "celebrations" in MtG before.

That was a tough match to watch; too many punts from the robots guy.
But that Finals game two was pretty good. Mull to 5 and he still wins. I would have sequenced a bit differently and played a chalice on 2 but otherwise the play was fine. also, I'm pretty sure Gary is the oldest GP winner ever. I think he said he was 52. Grats to him.

Well, now that the top 2 decks in the format both eschew basics almost entirely, Dragon Stompy is looking at an all-you-can-eat buffet. More or less resolve a spell > win. Of course, it's still a high variance deck that doesn't tend to perform very reliably over the course of a long tournament but here we can see what it can do if it gets there.

I noticed a few of those to be sure. I want to imagine that the universe was just gunning for Gary to win.

I don't know about that; the game one of the finals was one of those dumb "tempo deck has everything" games but he still managed to pull it out. So maybe the universe is just antagonistic to Ancient Tomb decks in general :P
Speaking of which that Steel Stompy deck had weird stuff... I wonder how good the Etched Champion was? Seems like Traxos would be better most of the time.

Speaking for myself, Champion is an ace. It's basicly your own TNN. I have them in my build and have come to love them. It's great to sac your Ravager knowing the target the counters are going to land on can't be removed in response, can block a Batterskull without giving life or punch past an opponents TNN.

No thalia decks in the top 16 is disappointing. I wish they would post top 32 or a day 2 breakdown. Of the 5 overarching archetypes: 12 blue stew, 2 chalice decks, 2 glass cannon combo, and 0 thalia or loam. At least chalice won the whole thing.
