I am playing with this deck right now It has lot of synergy and it crushed a lot of decks.

The synergy orcish lumberjack+titania/natural order/gsz.

Here is the improved version of the deck,

satyr+hogaak has a lot of synergies against tempish decks

safekeepers protect hogaak and combo with titania.

EDIT : testing has shown that 3CC trinisphere are too slow against storm i splitted into 2 thorn 2 null rod, I didn't like these trinis
also I cut a taiga for a fetch it has been ok so far and i didn't have issues with that

cutted the fast elvish spirit guide guide for 4 sylvan scrying

cutted one scrying for a safekkeper main.

in testing ooze and ruric are not good maindeck i don't side them much

testing has shown the deck is both worse than elf and lands so i don't think it is good enough ...

added tireless tracker they are awesome

Orcish lumberjack is one of my favourite cards! You want at least 1 primeval titan. 4 Tinder wall seems odd with 0 Drs.

Lumberjack is the best! The vintage applejacks deck (basically a value survival engine + lumberjacks) was sooooooo much fun to play when vintage first came to mtgo. 4 titania's is just beautiful too, cool list.

you want to accelerate into big stuff and dont want to eat your fetch in graveyard cause they are needed for titania
grim monolith has been tested inferno titan also but it was in a previous build without the dark depth combo this build is better
primeval titan is not needed it is 6CC so harder to hardcast than titania and can fetch the combo but you dont want to overload on target.
primary targets are dragon to wipe out the board or titania to kill if you have a crop

Ah, I hate that! I was like, "I know him better than to leave those out!" Deck looks sweet. Gonna give it a try.

I'm still pretty sure you'd be happy swapping out a needle for a prime time NO target. Good point on Drs...maybe one birds then.

Sweet deck dude.

I've only ever seen Orcish Lumberjack + Titania in this list before, but the other half of the deck is different. I think your list is better.

this deck definitely wants maindeck Sylvan Safekeeper. It's not only good with Marit Lage...it's insane with Titania!

Also like Ooze and Ruric MD for some Scryings or a Needle

EDIT: just saw that you added Safekeeper, nvm

I'm pretty sure that ruric thar, the unbowed and progenitus should deserve a spot in the 75.
Maybe Ruric maindeck as an hooser against combo in G1 and Progenitus from the side to bring in grindier mathcups.
Ruric is also a house against delver decks btw.

What match ups have you tried? How does it fare against the top decks of the format. :)

I tried something similar, with greater gargadon, I like the fact that Crop Rotation is usable for other stuff. To bad Lumberjack isn't green. :P

What are Needle for? (I know what they are good against, but I would like to know your reasoning behind them).

Bane of Progress out of the board maybe? Have you tested Boseiju, Who Shelters All/Cavern of Souls as a sideboard weapon against counter spells. Another land that could be good out of the board would be Glacial Chasm.

I second the safekeeper, it's one amazing creature!

I actually think you are right not to include Ruric Thar and Progenitus in the main board. You don't need cards that are that difficult to hard cast. Delver runs rampant in my metagame and that dragon seems really nice. :)

I played against grixis delver UR delver it is slightly favorable to even.

Czesh pile can be little harder before side caus they have strix to block the marit lage and you don't have progenitus/grudge before side.

Mono red stompy is a good matchup so is turbo depth.

Death and taxces is a good matchup.

miracle is not good, but you can manage sometimes to steal some games.

eldrazi is favorable.

needles are both for drs which stops titania from your fetch to come back and for wasteland depends of the situation.

The great thing about DRS running rampant in the meta is that Needle always have a target.

How come mono R stompy is a good match-up? It seem to me that both Chalice for 1 and Blood Moon destroys this deck? Needle is a blank against them, ofc. you got grudge and gsz in to rec sage after board. But it seems to me that this deck would loose game one 99 % of the time. They should be able to steal one of game 2 or 3 with turn one blood moon/chalice or something in that order?

D&T is another match-up where needle should shine.

No md way to deal with reanimator, storm, or sneak and show probably puts those matchups in the bad column.

purlqg
05-28-2018, 11:17 AM
Well needle turns Griselbrand in to a lifelink creature with no abilities other then that, that is horrible enogh. And you could race reanimator. Needle is good against sneak attack, but not so much against show. Maybe 1 karakas main somewhere, would be good with Needle? Storm is a bad match up before sideboarding, ruric thar could be an option.

there are full of one off I'ld like to put in sejiri steppe ghost quarter maze bojuka bog gaddock teeg, primeval titan progenitus worldspine wurm ruric etc...
but what would happen is that i draw them naturally and they suck, so I try to focuse on the primary goals titania beatdown or the combo or NO into dragon
Ramunap the Excavator I didn't test it but in which matchup would I want it ?

purlqg
05-28-2018, 03:25 PM
Ramunap Exc. will recur combo pieces and fetches. I don't think the late game weapon that he is are very needful here.

I would add Ruric (as a main deck weapon against storm/delver/miracles), Karakas, Bog, Progenitus or EW before Excavator. Maybe even a one of Wasteland, Ghost Quarter through CR makes 3 tokens when you destroy your own land. Eot, hitting for 20 when it becomes your turn.

Did you test GQ as a one of? :D

I have to proxy the deck and try it out.

I've been playing around with this for a while now. I started with the original GR things list with needles/scrying etc. As i kept playing, the deck just felt weak on threats when disrupted and had many clunky draws without lumberjack/dork sticking. (hard call with bolts/pushes etc).. which led me to Knight of the Reliquary. I was already splashing white for gaddock teeg in the board and figured that knight allows this deck to tutor up the combo, big threat, makes dudes with titania, good GSZ target. With more white you can add more combo hate pieces like thalia which pressures+hate.

Over 5 leagues or so, I've managed to clock a respectable overall 55% win rate vs the field with different iterations. This Naya variant has so far been the most competitive one. Deck is soft vs combo but I've had a great time vs pile, miracles, and other BUGx decks. Grixis can be rough if they do their delver thing. Bolts/Plow could be worth looking at in the board.

I might be straying too close to maverick but Knight is absurd in this deck.

After playing it a few times I have some questions:
1. With the Crop Rotations the situation has popped up for me that I wished there was an Ancient Tomb in the deck to ramp with Rotations.
2. I really liked Tireless Tracker and SB elderscale Wurm - why cut them in the newer versions?
3. As has been mentioned before: Ruric Thar should maybe be in the main as a gameplan against combo and Miracles

That's all - the deck is a blast to play if you like Maverick and Loam and just want to channel the inner Timmy.

I mean, it's sort of a variation of Aggro Loam, which just won a large event. It's probably a little better and a little worse than actual Aggro Loam, depending on the meta. You lose Loam, but you gain some big bodies, Natural Order and Dark Depths.

I assume you mean Chalice, since this deck plays the same amount of Loams as 4C loam does. Is there anywhere that people are talking about the deck? Like discord or something, because this thread seems a little dead.

Variations of this have been around for a long while. I've been brewing with it myself.

This deck tech shows a high placing Japanese player with a titania/lumberjack/pufi build.
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/instant-deck-tech-punishing-titania-legacy

Of all the high CC cards GSZ targets, I am most fond of Titania and Ruric Thar. Athough Primevil Titan is very strong with Darkdepths and thespian stage, it requires you to run 2 land slots, a few crop rotations and in the case above, 4 knights of the reliquary. I think that is a little excessive. Dragonlord Atarka is very nice, but a little slow and if it gets countered, you will probably lose the game, so you need to play Spellbreaker Behemoth / Cavern of Souls imo. My favorite card, Ruric Thar, gives you a very aggressive creature that is stronger than Gurmag Angler and punishes playing any bolt, counterspell, cantrip or removal spell. It's a 3 turn clock that reduces the opponent's number of turns left by 1 for each spell they play, so the turns they get become low impact as they can't dig themselves out of the hole they are in.

Yeah so I picked up the deck on MTGO, After about 20 matches I feel like the Knights and Prime Time really make the deck tick. The depths combo really gets you out of sticky situations where I don't see how the deck would win otherwise (Especially vs TNN). Spell breaker seems okay if you are in a super heavy Miracles meta and Atarka/Ruric seem to be a meta call about what is in the side and what is in the main depending on what is popular. I would like to find a way to put a tirelless tracker or 2 into the side for the control matchups but I honestly dont know what to take out for them.

Could Prowling Serpopard be better than Spellbreaker Behemoth? Vulnerable to Bolt and Decay but easier to cast and makes all your creatures uncounterable instead of only the ones with 5+ power. Not sure if the pros outweight the cons.

Not sure if the pros outweight the cons.So I haven't found people countering my creatures to even be that big of deal honestly. I've only been grinding in it for about 25 matches now but it feels like a mix of Lands, 4c Loam, and maverick. At its heart it's a loam, pfire, kotr deck which tends to overload a lot of counters because so many things are must answers. KOTR can run away with the game easily if left unchecked, (especially with a sylvan safekeeper and loam going), so can titania, so can just pfire and grove vs certain decks.

So far the big issue I have had with the deck has been the wrong half of the deck issue that always happens with these types of decks. Sometimes you get a fast combo hand when you need it to be grindy, and visa versa. This gets smoothed out a bit by GSZ and library.

So far the deck feels really good to me, it's running over a lot of fair blue and non blue decks and having issues with the faster combos, but that's kinda the price of doing business with decks like these.

Slowly picking up the cards I'm missing for this deck (NO, Primetime, Dragon, Titania) just so I can play this sometimes on a break from Loam. Why is Dragonlord one of the go to NO targets? Because it can clear the field? Has anyone used Archon of Valor's Reach or Ramunap Excavator in this deck? Is there any reasoning to a 2nd Dryad Arbor? or too awkward in opening hands I guess.

Why only 2 Lumberjack and 2 Natural order? Diversify?

hi guys

first time poster(well, first in a long time any way).

going to post my version of this concept here. it has some similarities to the list already posted but kinda operates on some other game plans as well. if it feels different enough, i will gladly start it's own thread so as to not gum up this one.

this is a project i've been working on for the better part of 6 months plus on my own. the applejacks list that popped up felt like a bit of validation of concept(rg unfair) to continue working on it. i've tried a lot of iterations but my current list feels like the most well rounded and stable. anyway enough talk, the list already!

jkibbs rg monsters

3 natural order
3 sneak attack
3 nahiri, the harbinger
1 woodfall primus
1 dragonlord atarka
1 emrakul, aeons torn
3 green sun zenith
3 orcish lumberjack
4 tinder wall
1 fierce empath
1 eternal witness
1 ranunap excavator
1 huntmaster of the fells
1 knight of the reliquary
1 primeval titan
2 sylvan library
4 punishing fire
1 life from the loam

2 elvish spirit guide

1 dryad arbor
2 taiga
2 savannah
2 wooded foothills
3 windswept heath
1 plains
1 mountain
2 forest
3 wasteland
3 grove of the burnwillows
1 karakas
1 thespian stage
1 dark depths

sideboard
3 red elemental blast
3 surgical extraction
1 ancient grudge
2 containment priest
1 gaddock teeg
2 swords to plowshares
2 blessed alliance
1 elesh norn, grand cenobite

so while this deck can operate like a pseudo loam list, it is much more in its element when its trying to play unfair. its main plan is to make 4 mana on turn 2 and do something busted(the 3 easy ways are: t1 jack off taiga, t1 wall into t2 land drop, t1 GSZ for arbor into t2 land #3 into wall). it can actually make more in certain cases but t2 sneak, order or nahiri are all pretty good starts to the game. this deck came about as a desire for me to play an emarakul deck but run less emrakul. i did this originally by playing 4 GSZ and 2 empath which allows to GSZ to put emrakul into hand for a sneak or through the breach(my original list was 4 sneak 4 breach 3 order). if we have an active sneak in play then this also allows us the NO for empath and sneak emrakul(we can also sneak empath from hand into sneak emarkul if we have access to RR and empath in hand). t2 nahiri means t4 attacking emrakul and t2 NO can mean all sorts of issues for our opp ranging from DD combo or 2 wastelands or groves or just wiping their board and an 8/8 flying trample beater. primus was terrestadon but the elephant just gives our opp too much residual value if we use it via sneak. primus is 2/3 the destruction(off sneak) with none of the draw backs and is still a persisting 6/6 trample that likely hits a land on t2. it also has utility value of hitting bridges or other problem non creature permanents.

so one of my reasons for posting this list is to get some help with my SB. it feels a bit clunky atm but maybe some of my bad match ups are just tough no matter what i do(ub reanimator, and show n tell variants). anyway enjoy the list, and ideas are welcome. i'm happy to go more in depth on card choices if anyone is curious.

random all stars of the deck: sylvan library, tinder wall, excavator. seriously all of these cards are so good in this list it's insane.

btw hovercraft, i run DL as a general sweeper and solid clock. 8/8 is serious body and its a legit one sided wrath vs a lot of fair legacy decks and it's the best effect of its type we can NO for. it can be karakased back to our hand which can be annoying ..... but we also run karakas so we can abuse it off of our sneak attack. sneak+karakas+dragon all together is basically impossible to beat for much of the fair part of the format. unfair decks don't care but there are a lot of decks do.

Hello,
I've had some fun and not-categorically-terrible results with this at my weekly lately.

I've been experimenting with a variation on this theme based largely on this build:
https://mtgtop8.com/event?e=20909&d=338435&f=LE

My list is:

2 Orcish Lumberjack
2 Birds of Paradise
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Sylvan Safekeeper
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Knight of Autumn
4 Knight of the Reliquary
1 Titania, Protector of Argoth

2 Pithing Needle (not sure what this is for, might cut it)

A few weeks ago I lost with a v.similar list to Elves and Dredge (while beating Pox and I think the bye) and the sideboard is tuned accordingly.

Last night:

R1 vs. Maverick
Mulled to 5 game one, he STP'd my Birds and Wastelanded me, put together a wall of Moms and Hierarchs and beat me down with Scavenging Ooze. Think I got Titania out but it didn't matter against all that protection.

G2 he tried to do the same thing, putting three Hierarchs and two summoning-sick Moms on the board by turn 3. I got to live the dream and Natural Order for Dragonlord Atarka and wipe his board 5-for-1 style. Or really six-for-two since I traded a Natural Order and Birds for three druids, two clerics and a STP. Anyway made me feel like a cowboy and he scooped soon thereafter.

Mulled to 6 game three. Drew a lot of blanks and ended the game with Atarka and a Natural Order in my hand. Before I died I managed to hardcast Archon of Valor's Reach naming instants. He looked at his next card, said "I'm sorry" and slammed Palace Jailer. Skull emoji.

0-1

R2 vs. Miracles
G1 was 25 minutes long but could've been closed a lot faster if I'd realized Mission Briefing is a card in that deck now and used Bojuka Bog accordingly. Eventually he scooped for time because Punishing Grove + ~8 lands is real good vs. his deck. Side note: it feels reeeeaaal good to grind against Miracles so hard they feel like THEY'RE the ones worried about time.

G2 he got a Back to Basics and Jace in fairly short order and I died.

G3 a very awkward draw got very good when I managed to T1 Mox, Loam, get back lands, then topdeck and play out two more Moxes, effectively blanking the Back to Basics he played. He surgical'd Loam but it didn't matter; he kept trying to kill stuff like Orcish Lumberjacks and I kept having more threats and eventually we wound up in turns with KOTR on the board and Depths in play.

I was afraid of awkward whoever-blinks-second-wins shenanigans making it hard for me to stack activating Knight to get Stage, but I got extremely lucky and topdecked Stage on T1 of turns. I activated it on his endstep T2, holding up Knight. I then topdecked REB, again feeling like a cowboy or possibly a man wearing a tanktop and headband.

Thus when I went to attack with Marit Lage T3 he quickly showed me AK and Terminus on top I replied "FIRST OF ALL." Red blast. He then went to STP and I activated Knight for Sejiri Steppe. We got there. Praise hands emoji.

1-1

R3 vs. U/R Landstill
G1 I mulled and he had multiple FOWs for KOTR and whatnot and quickly beat me down with Factory and Faerie Conclave.

G2 His deck did not show up and I played Choke and beat him down while holding various other threats in hand.

G3 He played a T1 Conclave, I Wastelanded it. Once he was on two lands he played a Standstill and I fetched a Dryad Arbor. We then played about 10 turns of draw-go + in-for-1 while he waited to draw another manland, with him eventually cleanup discarding AKs and me playing out a lot of lands, including Wasteland and Maze of Ith. Finally he broke his own Standstill with Fact or Fiction on my endstep. The game ended with me grinding away his life total with Punishing Fire and Dryad Arbor while holding more action.

2-1

R4 vs. Punishing Blood Sun Depths (?)
We only played one for fun before I had to scram. He told me he doesn't love this matchup; I think that's partly because I play a ton of lands so Trinisphere isn't ruinous, plenty of threats that don't care about Chalice, and being able to Crop Rotation straight into Marit Lage against Blood Sun is real dumb.

So yeah. The list still needs polish and may always just be kinda clunky and random and also often bad against fast combo, but it's been a welcome break from Grixis Control for me. Major props to everyone who put in work to help brew this; it's fun.

Such a cool idea for a deck.

Correct me if I am wrong but Orcish Lumberjack can regularly generate 5 mana on turn 2 correct?

Turn 1: Land + Lumberjack
Turn 2: Another land, tap both lands for 2 mana, tap Lumberjack and sac a land for an additonal 3 mana.

That 5 mana on turn 2 can be used to play either a Titania on turn 2, or a GSZ for 0 to grab a Dryad Arbor and sac it to cast Natural Order -> Progenitus turn two.

Both are very strong plays, but both require an Orcish Lumberjack in your opening hand.

Would adding Veteran Explorer + Cabal Therapy to provide another route for mana acceleration and to improve consistency be a good idea? Explorer can be sacced to Natural Order as well.

Beat Storm and Grixis Delver with this the other night and went to time against Deadguy Ale.

Storm got stuck with land-light draws and Wasteland punished them. G2 I got an absurd opener of like T1 Mox Diamond into Thalia, get it Fatal Pushed, T2 Wasteland play Settlers, T3 slam Ruric Thar.

The Grixis matchup was a grind (at one point I tapped eight lands and gave my opponent two life in order to kill a Gurmag Angler with Punishing Fire) but being able to threaten to go wide with Titania while also stealing wins off the Marit Lage combo was really busted. I'm also glad Knight of Autumn exists (killing Bitterblossom mattered) and am tempted to replace the Ancient Grudge in the board with a second copy.

The Deadguy Ale matchup was really stupid and ended with an epic topdeck fight in turns while I had 39 life from getting Marit Lage STP'd. Thoughtseize proved to be a frustrating card for both of us while a second Marit Lage sat under Ensnaring Bridge, but the match was against a friend and we'd spent the prior 50 minutes taking turns being stressed and wondering why we weren't just drawing with each other, so when it came time to shake hands and let the outcome lie in mystery, I was content.

There's a strong argument that list I posted above would be better off with more Titania and less Natural Order. So far NO has mainly proven a remarkably cute way to trap interesting cards in my hand. I also never know wtf to name with Archon of Valor's reach. Sigarda, Host of Herons is a card.

UPDATE: I took this tweaked list to a couple more weeklies. This 75 is 5-1-1 in matches, 12-7-1 in games.

2 orcish lumberjack
2 birds of paradise
1 dryad arbor
1 sylvan safekeeper
1 scavenging ooze
1 gaddock teeg

3 crop rotation
3 punishing fire
2 life from the loam
2 sylvan library

1 bojuka bog
1 garruk relentless
1 nissa, vital force
2 tormod's crypt
2 thalia of thraben
2 cindervines
3 red elemental blast
3 blazing volley

I beat Lands, S&T, Storm, Bomberman and Elves. Lost to Grixis Delver, and went to time against Grixis Control.

There are a bunch of questions it'd be fair to ask about the list, some meta-dependent, but based on the matches I've played so far, it feels decent. I don't find myself missing the Natural Order package.

I suspect this list will evolve with the advent of Wrenn and Six, but exactly how is not obvious to me...

Good luck have fun do weird stuff

I suspect the Wrenn and Six ban is reasonable for the meta overall, but this deck has been the most fun I've had playing Naya since Zoo quit being a deck around 2012 I guess. Pour one out for it and wish me luck brewing a version of it with no W6...

EDIT: almost forgot to mention for posterity on its final run at my local this went 3-1 (2-1-1 but we played after the ID) beating UR Delver, Mentor/Astrolabe/Oko ctrl, and a hilarious Jeskai ascendancy pile aaaanndd losing kinda to itself disguised as U/w Blade with multiple Back to Basics and Palace Jailers. This deck has intrigued me for a while now and thought I'd comment to keep this thread alive.

As an old school player, I've always loved red green aggro. In particular Orcish Lumberjack. I've read several of the last comments pushing the deck closer to a Lands build, but what about an aggro approach with Goyf?

If you cut Dark Depths combo pieces you open up room for Tarmogoyf, Lightning Bolt, Wasteland etc.. This strategy, rather than Marit Lage, you want Progenitus as your bomb along side Titania synergies. Plus you get Wasteland + Titania combo, and if you run Ramunap you get the Wasteland soft lock synergy. Lightning Bolt for removal and reach and Abrade for more removal but mostly for Chalice match ups and Reclamation Sage + GSZ to further battle Chalice. I've goldfished a few games on my (not at all tuned) list and the deck seems not bad. Here's what I've been toying with. Is this route decent or is the Marit Lage route strictly better?

Looks sweet but I don't like md abrade. If you're concerned with chalice run summoning trap. Orcish L can hardcast it if needed.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Abrade either but I figured between Moon Stompy, Loam and Eldrazi you're bound to run into Chalice. My thinking was that Abrade would also be useful in Delver matchups. Summoning Trap appears to be not shitty for battling Chalice. I've never noticed that card before.

Maybe that slot could/should be used for adding more pressure via cheap aggressive bodies and put Chalice hate in the sb along with the Combo hate. I was considering Bonecrusher Giant or Steel Leaf Champion.

Bonecrusher Giant almost seems better but he's red so he can't GSZed or sacked to NO. SLC can and he's out of Bolt range. Maybe a split of both or do those guys suck?

Just after a few goldfishes Steel Leaf Champion is much more appreciated than Abrade. Often I was getting hands with no bombs and stuck with nothing but Bolts and Abrades. He comes out turn 2 no problem after a turn one GSZed Dryad, Birds or Lumberjack.

Bonecrusher is solid too. Collector ouphe is the new best gsz option due to underworld imo. I'd do one md 1/2 SB plus something like thorns. I'd cut one tinder for hexdrinker too.

Yeah, Ouphe is really good. He should be in there. Also, after goldfishing I'm realizing Tinder Wall isn't that great anyway.

I've been toying around with Terravore in that Abrade/Steel Leaf slot after I noticed how much land gets dumped into the graveyard. He gets huge fast! Especially considering his ability counts all lands in all graveyards. So if you Wasteland your opponents land he gets +2/+2.

In that build I cut Lightning Bolt and added 2 Crop Rotation to fetch Wasteland. This puts two lands in the yard triggering Titania twice. It also pumps Terravore +3/+3. I also added a lone Gaea's Cradle which has really tested well. I've been getting some massively explosive hands.

By turn two you can get Titania in play with three 5/3 tokens plus toast one of opponent's lands. Here's a hand similar to a couple I've had.

Turn one: Land + Lumberjack

Turn 2: Play Fetchland, sack it grab a Tiaga, tap it, tap Lumberjack and sack one of the tapped lands for 5 mana. Cast Titania, triggering her ability, bring the fetchland back into play. Crack it, create a 5/3 token, search library for a Forest and put it into play. Tap it and cast Crop Rotation thus sacking my Forest, create another 5/3 token, grab Wasteland with the Crop Rotation and put it into play. Crack it and waste opponent's land triggering Titania again. Put another 5/3 token into play.

Another way to play the Crop Rotation is to grab Cradle instead of Wasteland. Tap the Cradle for 3 and cast Terravore, or any other threat.

Also, turn 2 Progenitus is nice.

Still not sure this is better than Dark Depths route buts it's really fun to play. Maybe with some tweaking.

Can you fit in Bonecrusher Giant anywhere? It has good utility doing 2 things at once, maybe in place of some Bolts.

Tinder Wall seems bad.

Do you want 3-4 Veil of Summer either main or SB to deal with counters and other stuff?

Laser Brains
02-15-2020, 10:03 PM
I think Veil of Summer is a perfect fit for the sideboard. It should definitely be there.

I do have a couple of lists together, and I've come to the conclusion that bigger bombs is better than Lightning Bolt. The deck needs to add pressure. Often if you don't draw Lumberjack the deck just durdles. Cheap 3 cc fatties have come in really handy in these situations. I am testing 3x Bonecrusher Giant and 4x Steel Leaf Champion. These guys hit the table turn two almost every time I draw them. The body on the Steel Leaf Champion is sexy! ;) Especially since he can't be chump blocked.

I've cut Tarmogoyf but I'll probably put him back in at some point. He's just not a bomb early in the game before there is anything in the yard. Terravore is an absolute bomb! I can often have a 6/6 trample attacking turn three. Sometimes bigger. These guys are hard to test with goldfishing because I don't know what my opponents graveyard looks like. I was testing 4x Terravore but found that to be too many because occasionally I don't draw Wasteland, Crop Rotation or Orcish Lumberjack to fuel him.

There's not much of a toolbox with Crop Rotation but 6 Wastelands is tight! Especially with Ramunap. Also super good with Terravore and Titania. The Gaea's Cradle comes in very handy and is always appreciated.

Here's the list currently I'm toying with and I do like it better than the previous list.

BEATZ:
4x Orcish Lumberjack
2x Birds of Paradise
1x Sylvan Safekeeper
1x Ramunap Excavator
1x Reclamation Sage
1x Scavenging Ooze
4x Bonecrusher Giant
4x Steel Leaf Champion
1x Terravore
4x Titania, Protector of Argoth
1x Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
1x Progenitus

UTILITY:
4x Green Sun's Zenith
4x Natural Order
2x Crop Rotation
1x Sylvan Library

LAND:
2x Dryad Arbor
2x Forest
1x Gaea's Cradle
3x Stomping Ground
4x Taiga
4x Wasteland
4x Windswept Heath
4x Wooded Foothills

EDIT: -1 Terravore +1 Bonecrusher Giant

Also, after goldfishing I see why adrieng wasn't running Progenitus. He's great but if you just NO for Titania she always gets a 5/3 token on the ETB trigger since she returns a fetch or wasteland to be sacked and she gets out of hand fast. Plus, obviously Progenitus sucks when you draw him. And Dragonlord Atarka fits better now that I've cut removal. That is all.

Laser Brains

I've been tuning the aggro build of this deck and I've been calling Taiga Beat. ;) I have included some very very nice synergistic additions. For starters, I've cut Bonecrusher Giant, Steel Leaf Champion and Lightning Bolt and re-included the Depths package, but not so much that I'm dedicating a huge chunk of the deck to it. One of the big additions that has been invaluable is Ancient Tomb. I tested Gaea's Cradle. It sucks in comparison. Tutoring for Ancient Tomb with Crop Rotation has allowed me to make some huge plays a turn earlier than I normally would have been able to. Especially with Thespian's Stage's activation cost.

The deck has three ways to win.

1). Combo out with Titania (one to three 5/3 tokens) turn two. Follow up with Wasteland, more tokens etc.. This done primarily with Lumberjack + Titania or ramp into Natural Order via Crop Rotation for Ancient Tomb with a ramp dude (Birds or GSZ into Dryad). This shit happens all of the time. Probably 55-65% of the time

2). Aggro beats. Beat em down with dudes while disrupting their mana base. 4 Crop Rotation means 8 Wastelands. 1cc 3/4 dudes with the name Elvish Reclaimer is bonkers! Terravore has been a bomb! This deck literally shovels lands into the graveyard. I've won games with 10/10 Terravores. Between Crop Rotation, Wasteland, Fetchlands, Elvish Reclaimer's ability and Lumberjack the deck is dumping lands into the yard. This does so many things. It triggers Titania, makes your dudes bigger, ramps you into big plays etc.. Ramunap has become invaluable as I've ran out of lands to fetch and recurring Wastelands and Taigas has saved me.

3). Combo out with Marit Lage. Again, Elvish Reclaimer's ability to assemble the combo is tight here. Not to mention if your opening hand has Thespian's Stage and Once Upon a Time you can often draw into a Crop Rotation for Dark Depths very often.

I've assembled a sideboard that can probably use some work but so far I've included Cavern of Souls which is easily searched up with Crop Rotation for control matchups. Maze of Ith for pesky Griseldads, Marit Lage etc.. And Ingot Chewer for Stompy/Chalice matchups.

I haven't fully tested it in the gauntlet yet but I will be testing and posting tweaks and match-ups soon if anyone is interested. Decks I will be testing against, piloted by my buddy Schleib, are: Eldrazi, Reanimator, Delver, Hogaack, Enchantress, and Death & Taxes.

Here's my fairly tuned list:

2x Birds of Paradise
4x Orcish Lumberjack
1x Ramunap Excavator

1x Scavenging Ooze
1x Sylvan Safekeeper

Okay, so it's been a couple months since I last posted here and I've had a lot of time to tune and play this deck. Right now, current stats are all pre-sideboard and it holds up but it's not breaking any records. These stats come from games played between myself and a buddy so many match ups we played several times.

Here's some stats:

RG Stuff vs. Doomsday 1 - 2
RG Stuff vs. Burn 2 - 3 (both of my wins here came from Ruric)
RG Stuff vs. UB Death's Shadow 2 - 0
RG Stuff vs. Eldrazi 2 - 1
RG Stuff vs. BR Reanimator 1 - 6
RG Stuff vs. Death & Taxes 4 - 2
RG Stuff vs. BUG Threshold 1 - 3
RG Stuff vs. Hogaak 8 - 3 (we played this one a lot)

Here's the updated current list:

RG STUFF (60)

Creatures / Beatz: (15)

4x Elvish Reclaimer
4x Orcish Lumberjack
1x Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
1x Dragonlord Atarka
1x Scavenging Ooze
1x Thrashing Brontodon
3x Titania, Protector of Argoth

Utility / Tutors: (20)

4x Crop Rotation
4x Once Upon a Time
4x Green Sun's Zenith
4x Natural Order
3x Exploration
1x Sylvan Library

Land: (25)

1x Ancient Tomb
2x Dark Depths
2x Dryad Arbor
2x Forest
1x Maze of Ith
4x Taiga
3x Thespian's Stage
2x Wasteland
4x Windswept Heath
4x Wooded Foothills

Sideboard (15)

1x Bojuka Bog
1x Cavern of Souls
1x Sejiri Steppe
1x Kogla, the Titan Ape
1x Maze of Ith
2x Pithing Needle
1x Progenitus
1x Ramunap Excavator
1x Sylvan Safekeeper
4x Veil of Summer
1x Xantid Swarm

BEST ADDITIONS:

Birds of Paradise vs. Exploration. I cut the Birds a while ago and have never looked back. The deck already has GSZ for Dryad Arbor. So a turn one Llanowar is not a problem. The red mana that we can get from the Birds is moot. There is already a ton of red sources and the deck really only splashes red anyway. Exploration is boss in this slot. Marit Lage can come out fast here. The downside is that it is a dead card late game.

Elvish Reclaimer. This guy is a house. A 3/4 for one mana really adds a lot of pressure to your opponent and his ability has assembled my Marit Lage combo in dozens of games and has also allowed me to sac lands just so I can crank out more 5/3s.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed. This guy has won me several games. At first I was a little reluctant but I tested him and he literally has won me games in not only combo matchups but also against Burn and Death's Shadow. On a scale of 1 - 10 I'd give him a 8.

Thrashing Brontodon > Reclamation Sage. He's not a dead card if your opponent doesn't have any enchantments or artifacts and he's a better beater. I never had any matchups that I really need him except against Hogaak were I needed to keep my opponent of of his Altar of Dementia.

Sylvan Library. This is a no brainer with all the shuffling going on.

The MVP of the deck is Crop Rotation. I always want to see this card. Helps me assemble Marit Lage, grabs Ancient Tomb for ramp and nabs Maze of Ith in a pinch.

CARDS I TESTED BUT GOT THE AXE:

Sylvan Safekeeper seems like an obvious fit but I never felt like I wanted to tutor her up and in the dozens of games I've played I've always been disappointed to draw her. I think I only used her ability once and that was when I was already winning.

Ramunap Excavator. This guy was just seriously underwhelming. I liked him more than Safekeeper but I never really abused his ability.

Bonecrusher Giant. You can't tutor him with GSZ and again very underwhelming with this strategy.

MORE CARDS I TOYED WITH BUT DON'T RECOMMEND:
Need for Speed
Azusa, Lost but Seeking
Ore-Scale Guardian (this guy was actually not too shabby)
Terravore
Raze

CONCLUSION:
In conclusion the deck is a riot to play but I feel like it can be a bit too reliant on Orcish Lumberjack. He always got bolted in the Burn match ups or countered or Stifled against Threshold. When he sticks around though the game can end quick. Lots of the games I won were just plain straight aggro beats with Elvish Reclaimer and Ruric while the rest were Titania (when Lumberjack stuck around) and Marit Lage was my champ.

Interesting results.

Looks like your best matches are fair decks and decks that struggle to answer turn 1 Lumberjack, while your worst matches are combo (expected for a beatdown strategy) and Threshold (too many answers for Lumberjack and NO?).

I'm surprised you beat Hogaak so much but lost to Reanimator so badly. I guess your grave hate plan (Bog) is a bit too slow for Reanimator and too easy for them to recover from (stops 1 fatty), while it can really wreck Hogaak (depends on filling a big GY).

I'm also surprised you did so well against D&T. I would expect them to be very strong at answering Marit Lage and ramp fatties. How did you win those games?

Laser Brains
06-20-2020, 01:00 AM
Reanimator was too fast for me. Hogaak is a slower deck and almost always I either out raced it or got my Ooze online early. None of the games I played however did we use sideboards. It was essentially to test the deck as it is. Sideboard I'm sure would really help in the Reanimator match ups. Your right though, the fair match ups were usually in my favor with the exception of BUG Threshold. Stifle literally tore me apart over and over, especially against Lumberjack. Also Daze and FoW on my NO was not very nice. We did play more Eldrazi matches but I don't know where I put my record keeping on that one (it was over a week ago). I was smashing Eldrazi though for the most part from what I remember.

FTW, thanks for the comment! Any suggestions to make it better? I'm considering cutting Lumberjack altogether and maybe a different ramp plan.

I'm also surprised you did so well against D&T. I would expect them to be very strong at answering Marit Lage and ramp fatties. How did you win those games?

My Marit Lage got flickered in one game from the Wisp, and then bounced in another with Karakas. What won those games though were that my creatures were bigger and they came out faster. My opponent also couldn't keep me off my mana, Lumberjack actually shined here and he never got STPed.

i like your list enough to make it, but > question: pyroblast is better than veil of summer?

It does handle Oko, which is something. It also works better against other blue threats as well.

Yeah pyroblast is better against delver, against oko, against show and tell ; better than veil of summer overall.
It is also better than reb because of hogaak (1 more card in grave against non blue decks)

Played two leagues went twice 3-2

league 1 beat storm twice and maverick, lost to merfolk he comboed twice with thassas oracle and gob too much card to kills ours 1/1

second league 2 beat snowko and temur delver twice lost to lands any idea for this matchup to improve it ? and turbodepth didnt draw my crops and he got me turn 2 token twice

third league 4-1 beat bw confidant, rg lands, temur delver, tes, was 4-0 then lost to ur delver

4th league 2-3 lost to painter miracle and eons of echo artifact beat eldrazi white and standstill

looks great. i would consider making maindeck room for the ouphe since you already have gsz and ouat. can you explain to me why there's 4 safekeeper?

thanks as i don't have any testing with your list.

adrieng

safekeeper +hoogak is game over if early vs temur because it protects hoogak from oko,

safekeeper helps triggering vengevine and good for hogaak to harcast it, it protects your creatures from removals (swords karakas etc...)

it is really a good creature to have as a 4 off.

I don't like ouphe main it is mainly for storm so G1 you have to prey to have a fast kill, also I might made room for bog main.

My main issues with the deck is miracle with multiple terminus with mystic sanctuary, lands, turbo depth and ensnaring bridge is auto scoop G1.

Yeah I think you need the payoff of Titania for Lumberjack to be worth it. Vengevine alone isn't enough, b/c it's already easy to cheat them out without mana ramp.

What are you losing to? Maybe you just need more ways to interact with unfair decks, like Crop Rotation into Karakas and Bog.

i cut natural order for abundant harvest kind off green cantrip, order is too risky when it gets fow it still 3 for 2 vs 2 for 2 for land+titania ; harvest smooths the deck

side i cut choke for surgical which are also good against control decks but also graveyards decks.

Adrieng, you've created a monster. This is one of my favorite decks!

I'm still running my variant of the old build. I haven't tested the Hogaak build yet, but I'm very interested.

I literally have this deck in paper and it is a riot to play! It's sort of a gatekeeper though. It runs away with wins all of the time due to the redundant amount of win options (aggro beats, combo wins w/ Marit Lage and Titania combo), but it loses to counter magic.

What I've noticed is that when cards like Crop Rotation, Orcish Lumberjack and Natural Order get countered (or whatever you cast off Lumberjack) you lose two cards and it's hard to recover. Again, this deck just steals games, but it's a gatekeeper deck. In my humble opinion though, this is probably one of, if not, my favorite decks to play. And I've played it at least 100 times. I've actually tested it against the entire gauntlet with decent results.

Thought I'd show off my paper build of this. I've been playing it a ton, tested a lot of cards, scrapped a lot of cards etc.. I've beat up a bunch of decks with this list. I haven't been keeping track of games though. It goes toe to toe with Bant control. Out races Hogaack and a lot of Vial decks. I don't know how it holds up against Ragavan Delver because I don't have that proxied up. Waiting to see what gets banned and how the meta changes.

I'd like to see another Pyroclasm in the sideboard. Most of my creatures are unaffected by it. Karakas should probably be in there somewhere too.

Nice deck. I personally prefer that Lumberjack-Titania Reclaimer-Depths version to the Hogaak version too.

If it's mainly losing to blue decks countering business, how good is Allosaurus Shepherd in the board? Underrated (outside Elves) GSZ-able creature that makes your business spells uncounterable (Titania, NO, GSZ, Crop Rot). Worst case it's an un-Dazeable 1-drop that trades with Ragavan.

Agree with Karakas somewhere in the 75. Good vs Ragavan, Uro, GW Depths, Grief Reanimator.... there's a good % of the last Legacy Challenge Top 32 already.

Good call! I saw you mention Allosaurus in Bag of Rocks thread. I think it's good enough to be main deck. The flex slot here is Kalonian Hydra. I've already got a tight suite of big beaters. For a 5 drop I will always want to cast Titania before Hydra anyway. I think Allosaurus would fit perfect here. I had a bunch of other cards in that slot including Centaur Vinecrasher, Terravore, Ignoble Hierarch and Sylvan Safekeeper.

Safekeeper seems like a no brainer, but honestly after testing it I realized I never used her ability and eventually went with Sejiri Steppe for protection. Maybe I'll re-test Safekeeper at another stage.

Allosaurus seems to fit the bill much better. Especially since so many of the cards like NO and Crop Rotation really suck when they get countered. Allosaurus can also be "snuck" into play with GSZ. Once it hits the table those cards are so much better against control. Plus I am running 4x Elvish Reclaimer, so her secondary ability isn't dead at all.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Sideboard, I'm thinking of the following changes:

-3x REB
-1x Choke
-1x Ancient Grudge
-1x Maze of Ith

+2x Pyroclasm
+1x Pyrostatic Pillar
+1x Carpet of Flowers
+1x Karakas
+1x Hull Breach

New Sideboard:
3x Pyrostatic Pillar
3x Pyroclasm
2x Carpet of Flowers
2x Choke
2x Hull Breach
1x Bojuka Bog
1x Karakas
1x Collector Ouphe

Less focus on blue control hate (you can only side out so many cards), more focus on shutting off blue control mana (Choke) and gaining mana (Carpet), more focus on combo hate (Pyrostatic Pillar), more sweepers (Pyroclasm), Karakas over Maze of Ith and 2x Hull Breach instead of 1x Hull Breach and 1x Ancient Grudge.

Haven't posted on this thread in over a year.

I updated my old deck list and smashed Maverick, Lands and Painter today. The new build is explosive!! It's so much faster. Out are the slow late game silver bullets such as Scavenging Ooze, Ramunap, Thrashing Brontodon. In is Minsc & Boo! M&B add so much consistency and are so easy to cast second turn! The deck needed something really good to do with 4+ mana when Titania combo and/or Dark Depths were not available.

Not sure why I wasn't running Endurance. It is so good here.

It is a combo aggro deck through and through. Get 20 power turn 2 with Titania and 3 Tokens (this happens most of the games), 20 power turn 3 with Marit Lage or just smash your opponent with fast aggro creatures such as Minsc & Boo, Elvish Reclaimer etc..

Gonna play it next week in a small tournament. Not sure how it holds up to Initiative or U/R Delver so I guess we shall see. I'll post the results.

IMO, Minsc & Boo made this deck good.

M&B is a big boost for you.

What's in your SB? I would consider more copies of Endurance, Force of Vigor, a couple Torpor Orbs (for Initiative decks & Thassa decks), maybe even Unchained Berserker (if White Initiative is very common), maybe Carpet of Flowers (vs blue tempo), and Maddening Hex (storm).

Meltdown and Pyroblast are options too.

I haven't updated the sideboard from my old post but was thinking Cankerbloom for sure.

Force of Vigor and Torpor Orb seems really good. Probably cut Hull Breach.

Maybe something like this:

3x Pyrostatic Pillar / Maddening Hex
4x Torpor Orb
2x Carpet of Flowers
2x Choke
2x Force of Vigor
1x Cankerbloom
1x Endurance

Is Maddening Hex better than Pyrostatic Pillar?

EDIT: Unchained Berserker seems good! What to cut for it though.

Does anyone think Initiative will get neutered?

Until they make the announcement, I would plan for the current meta, which means Initiative is still Tier 0 with Delver.

Initiative normally preys on fair creature decks like this, so Torpor Orbs should help. You already have a much higher creature count than Delver so tough to say if Unchained Berserker is necessary. It would cost a lot of SB space. See how the deck tests.

Good advice!

I made some main deck changes, and I think for the better.

I cut Kogla, the Titan Ape for Craterhoof Behemoth. This helped me win several matches instantly when I was play testing yesterday and makes Natural Order that much better by adding another semi auto / combo win.

Win Cons:
Titania, Protector of Argoth combo.
Dark Depths combo.
Craterhoof Behemoth combo.
And straight up aggro beat down with Minsc & Boo and friends.

I also moved Sejiri Steppe from the main deck to the side. Most cases I never needed it. Crop Rotations are mostly for ramp by grabbing Ancient Tomb, putting lands in the yard to boost Elvish Reclaimers and for the turn two "20 power Titania combo" which is:

Turn Two:
Play second land, and tap both, sac one to Lumberjack, cast Titania, return a fetchland from the yard to play, crack it creating a 5/3, search for Taiga and put it into play, tap it for Crop Rotation sacking it thus creating another 5/3, fetching Wasteland which you crack to destroy opponents land, putting it into the yard thus creating another 5/3.

That's four 5/3 creatures on turn two plus opponent lost a land. It gets out of hand pretty fast and is probably the most common win with this deck besides just simple aggro beats.

Seems like there should be a green creature like Hushwing Gryff with a Torpor Orb effect for the sideboard. Is there nothing like this?

3x Lightning Bolt
2x Red Elemental Blast
2x Choke
1x Endurance
1x Cankerbloom
1x Bojuka Bog
1x Karakas
1x Maze of Ith

Game One: 2-0 Burn

Match one my opponent kept a bad hand and I slapped him with turn four Marit Lage. Had he decided to burn my Lumberjack instead of me he might have been able to buy himself another turn or two.

Match two he burned me down to 4 life but he was a turn short as I finished him off with a Craterhoof that I hard cast off of two Orcish Lumberjacks.

Game Two: 2-1 Doomsday

Match one he managed to go off really fast. I think it was a turn one Doomsday followed by a turn two Thassa's Oracle.

Match two I sided in a pair of REBs, an Endurance and a couple of Pyrostatic Pillars. Turn two he powered out an Opposition Agent with a Dark Ritual in response to a fetch which scared the hell out of me but I managed to work around it and beat him down with 5/3 dudes.

Match three I kept the same sideboard. I was afraid of Op Agent but he never cast one. He did Thoughtseize me turn one and took my Crop Rotation but but he left me with an REB and Pyrostaic Pillar which I thought was strange. I kept one mana open for REB the rest of the game hoping to counter Thassa's Oracle if he attempted to cast it but he later said he had a Cavern of Souls and that's why he went for the Crop. I then cast a Pyrostatic Pillar (which I think hurt me more than him), but I finished him with Titania and a 5/3.

Game Three: Draw 1-1 Reanimator

Match one I went first and my opponent mulligan-ed down to five cards but he powered out a turn one Entomb / Animate Dead on Griselbrand, then drew seven, dropped a Lotus Petal and I think another Dark Ritual for another Entomb Animate Dead but this time on Atraxa. Can't remember what I did following that but it wasn't much, dropped some more weenies such as Lumberjacks and Reclaimers. His turn two he slapped me for 12 with life link bringing his life up to 24 and then he powered out an Archon of Cruelty. I was hoping to top deck a Natural Order the following turn which I would have grabbed Craterhoof for the win but it was a land (yes I did have enough to swing for 24 and win), however all I top decked was a land. I died the next turn.

Match two I sided in Bojuka Bog, another Endurance and a Karakas. I kept a sub par hand because I had an Endurance, however there was no win con. I went first setting up my mana base. Turn two he attempted to go off with Entomb + Animate and I responded with Endurance setting him back big time. I then top decked a Minsc & Boo which smashed him over the next couple of turns for the win.

Match three. There was no match three. The time ran out at the end of match two so we agreed to share a draw however I think I would have won game three easily. With 4 Crops, one Bojuka Bog and 3 Endurance in the deck he would have had a hard time getting anything to stay in the yard long enough to reanimate.

After thoughts:
Allosaurus Shepherd and Ouphe always got sided out. I think I still want to keep them in though for the MTG Top 8 decks. Allosaurus is great against both Delver and Chalice in Gruul Initiative. Ouphe is great against Painter and 8-Cast.

It was a small tournament, only 8 players, but over all I was happy with the result and had a lot of fun. I missed the last tournament and there was 17 players so hopefully next time we can get those numbers back up.

I'm mostly happy with the main deck. My only gripe is that I'm thinking either I'm running one too many GSZ or at least need another good face-smashing target to grab with it. Most of the time I was grabbing Dryad Arbor.

The sideboard I think can use some help. Any suggestions??? Not sold on Pillars. Should Bolts be Abrades?? Cut Maze of Ith?
