Apparently EVERY companion is competitive. Like Lurrus, Zidraa and Gyruda - Yorion, Sky Nomad also seems to be generating results.

No fancy combos, just pure value in exchange for running 80 cards. The deck gets around the drawback by just running 80 of the best magic cards it could find.

Edit - Trying to change name of this thread to 4 Color Yorion Snow Miracles, please advise if I need a mod for this?

This Spice just got third place in a legacy challenge. (https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/legacy-challenge-2020-04-20#anzid_rd_place)

Lol @ AnziD. When Miracles just has too many playables to choose from so you just run ALL of them and get a free 4/5 flyer.

Snowko players must have gotten tired cutting down to less than 4 Astrolabe 4 Coatl because of deck size limits.

Edit: I think the reason companions are taking off so much is that, compared to other formats, Legacy is a very tight tempo-heavy format. Small errors like fetching the wrong land at the wrong time can decide a game, and small advantages like a single extra card can be enough for threat-light fair blue decks to win.

Yeah, it's hilarious, I tested the above deck and well . . . it runs surprisingly well for an 80 card deck, lots of draw and then later in the game Yorion just acts as a 4/5 beater with "draw 2 when ETB". No clue if its better than regular snow-ko but it doesn't feel worse.

Yeah I was surprised at the concept, but when I looked at the list it's all cards you want to maindeck in Miracles or Snowko anyway. It's not like you're forced to run any subpar cards. They're all tier 1 control cards. Sure you see Brainstorm, StP and Oko a bit less often but there's a lot of card draw to bridge the gap and you still have 7 Forces to police unfair decks.

Though if UGWx control is moving in this direction then creature-based combos like UW Fox are favored because most of those counters don't prevent early creatures from resolving. There's a lot of defense for the combat step, but not for creature combos like Fox+Ballista or Salvagers. 4 FoW in 80 cards.

Well 4 FOW and 3 FON. I would assume if Zirda and other creature based combos become larger control decks including this version will have to adapt and put in more relevant control. If you include STP in the answer column and assume you need at least two answers to such combo decks by turn 3 you should aim for about . . . . 18 relevant control cards (to get 70%+) that's only 7 more such control cards. No clue how you would make room for them or what such cards should be.

How does FON counter a Zirda or Walking Ballista or Salvagers? The combo is low-investment if they 2-for-1 themselves on a Monolith, and after that the combo is immune to FON, Spell Pierce, Flusterstorm and Spell Snare. That gives an edge to creature-based combo decks if UW control moves to 80 cards.

This has enough answers vs the usual noncreature combos, but the creature answers are meant to stop aggro in the combat step (Terminus, StP, Coatl). StP is an "answer" but can be beat by floating 2 mana. It's basically a soft counter like Daze.

Why wouldn’t they FON the monolith?

The combo is low-investment if they 2-for-1 themselves on a Monolith

Monolith is the most vulnerable piece but it's also the first piece you cast. When you cast it, opponent does not have perfect information. They don't know if you have the win that turn or if you're just casting Monolith for mana or if you have multiple Monoliths or bluffing. Because Monolith is the vulnerable piece, they have to decide whether to counter it up front because they may never get another chance (even with FoW you could have Cavern in hand).

That's a low investment. You only cast 1 card and they spend 2 cards. They 2-for-1 themselves. You could have a backup card, and they don't know if it's a backup Monolith or backup Ballista or no Ballistas, because they're forced to act on missing information. Normally if they counter the 3rd card in a 3-card combo then you've spend 3 cards and more mana, you've invested more and you're down more resources. If you force them for 2-for-1 on the 1st card, you've spent less and it's easier to recover. That's the ideal scenario for a combo deck.

It ended up being relevant in a lot of my test games.

Also Monolith is easy to recur (Emry, Salvagers) if it eats anything other than FoN.

Edit: It's like casting Orim's Chant in Jeskai Breach or Veil of Summer in TES. You cast it as the first card and it could be their only point of interaction, so it has to draw out the Force. If it does, they had the Force anyway but you avoided a bigger blowout. You want them to wrestle with whether to counter the first card. In Belcher the biggest blowouts come when you've spent 5 cards and then they Force Seething Song or Echo of Eons, because of how far behind you are. If they Force the first card, it's not so bad. And if Monolith resolves, often you just win. I played games where my Xerox opponent took his chances and never had a relevant interaction point again after Monolith.

Have you seen AnziD's latest version?

He splashes black to run the full 8 Strixes and Dead of Winter. It looks pretty good.

Yeah - definitely seems that Yorion is worth running. Miracles has enough draw and control to afford the 20 extra cards and Yorion turns into a draw 3.

This 14th place challenge list is close to what Anuraag was streaming, except it looks more tuned:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/legacy-challenge-2020-04-27#dejoyjoe_th_place

Yorion can draw a lot more than 3 cards. It uses multiples of:
Arcum's Astrolabe
Abundant Growth
Ice-Fang Coatl
Baleful Strix
Snapcaster Mage
Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath

These ETB 2-for-1 cantrips not only provide card advantage and help draw through the 80 card deck faster, but they also make Yorion game over if it resolves.

It's actually a good Yorion deck, instead of just a control deck running Yorion. Yorion provides everything the 4c control deck needs: a finisher that's easy to find and card advantage.

80 cards?! Try a 100!

Recent 5-0 list (https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/legacy-league-2020-05-09#solnox_-)

It's sort of like the 80 cards lists plus GSZ, Veteran's and targets. . .

Or jamming Alluren Combo

Nice - haven't checked that thread out. You think you'll be making the Yorion jump?

I don't know that I started anywhere to jump from or to, haha. I just found the list. But Reeplcheap seems to have decent results with it. I'm a few cards short of the 80 card list, but since they are all cheap I might pick them up eventually and play the list on a whim.
