Release date is April 29th, I believe on both MTGO and paper at the same time (this is new and something they are trying).
Previews start today, March 3rd at 2:30 PST on Twitch/YouTube.
I'll see if I can catch some things that seem interesting/relevant.

I could see the shard lands showing up in legacy decks with intensive colour requirements as a 1 of. Uro is very colour intensive for bant decks and the esper/grixis one could help those decks cast t2 hymn.
Or decks with specific land type effects.
The Naya one could be better than taiga in GWr depths (because of flagstones)
Replacing a Savannah would help bant/4c decks better support mystic sanctuary.

I hate that I see triomes and dismiss them for ETB tapped. Three fucking land types, cycling, no life payment, and yet my first impression is that they're EDH fodder (and maybe not even that, if your group is too competitive these lands are no better than any other cheap ETBT lands)
Any Kithkin spoiled yet? No? Fuck

Not sure whether to treat Art Deco lands as a visionary attempt to expand the imagination or a spectacularly Randian plot to explain who the fuck John Galt is, though I don't think anyone of value or caliber cared to find out in 1957 or since.

If you haven't seen the Atlus Shrugged trilogy the first one was a hilariously awful movie with incredibly wooden acting and dated special effects.
Think Sorkin filming his model railroad but worse.
I didn't watch the other two because why would i, but a friend dragged me to the first

I guess I'm going off track (heh heh), but I like a LOT of VERY questionable movies, and I couldn't make it through the first installment. Just . . . shots of trains doing train stuff. And all the heroes seem exactly like the villains only attractive-er. At one point I blurted out, "This feels like I'm watching what going to work feels like."

tbf your impression is valid, those lands are not really good in anything they do. They cycle, sure, but for three mana, they fix the colors, but turn after you play them. Nice cards, but not strong enough.
Well, honestly they are not even nice, I don't like the aesthetics at all. Ziatora's Proving Ground (https://media.wizards.com/2022/snc/en_zwNEYy5dG1.png) looks like a close up of a microchip. Thankfully we will have a full-art (https://media.wizards.com/2022/snc/en_A05yMEKNl1.png) version where a guy plays curling in an abandoned Walmart warehouse. And I don't even have an idea what's going on in few of the other illustrations.
Similarly, I don't even have an idea what's going on here (https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/first-look-streets-new-capenna-where-family-means-business-2022-03-03) storywise:
She was someone who fit right in but could be spotted instantly. Brown hair and piercing... and nobody would get the drop on her.
Smart. And being smart led to compliments of the kitchen, a server plating fancy hors d'oeuvres in front of you. With a smile and nod, you adjusted your napkin and placing more than enough to cover for your soy latté, the reader entered into a bewildered confusion.
I feel like they're moving more and more into this techno/urban/XYZpunk territory, and it makes the game an absolute mess of ideas and aesthetics.
It also feels like a pandering to an increasingly urbanised population "guys, an adventure isn't to be found in the jungles of some far distant tropical island, it is right here at your fingertips in the big boring noisy overcrowded stinky city, exactly like the one that you live in" hence this Return to Return to Human Anthill.
who the fuck John Galt, Ron Paul, Sorin, Gatsby is
I needed to google 3/4 of those names.
Interesting that the art did remind you of a book, because I got the absolute opposite feeling, some of the illustrations emit a weird nat soc vibe.
But they're fine for the EDH, I'll make proxies, only with some cool pictures.
MOD EDIT: Yeah, I am going to preemptively remove the term you used, which seems, at best, to be patronizing or possibly derogatory. Really no need for that.

I got a lot of vibes similar to that ancient "Metropolis" movie but the essence is still pretty art deco.
Anyone remember when plains had actual plains in them instead of just something white or islands were not just blue whatever?
In general, they have run out of creative ideas a long time a go so they are just stealing from everything else. Like Kaldheim was basically norse mythology with some name changes.
It doesn't help that they can't create interesting characters or tell an interesting story.
Then again, they have to shit out 4 sets a year together with some nostalgia product and more commander nonsense with like 3 cards that are accidentally broken in eternal.
No wonder everything is so half baked.

Yes, you’re absolutely right, the Plains 272 could easily be a vintage Metropolis poster. You’re also right about the artistic direction of the past few years. Lots of the lands’ art is very weak and invokes no emotion, it often doesn’t even represent a landscape. I imagine that it may be hard to make a proper illustration for an urban environment, but why would anyone want to place a fantasy game into one?

Again, you’re right, but I’d like to defend the MtG creators a bit. Streets of Capoeira is 96th set and one would need a titan the kind of JRRT to consistently bring us great stories. It’s also first and foremost a game, and I think that the story and setting doesn’t matter that much, as long as the game is enjoyable.
Also, all the best stories were already told, so there’s hardly a chance that a team of hired copywriters will come with some breathtaking prose.
There’s also another aspect, that of what sells. One may surely lament over the bland storyline, forgettable characters, but it seems like that WotC’s formula works. Speaking of the “stealing” from say Norse folklore and mythology, some people may very much welcome that, others may like the “stolen” Lovecraftian mythos, and you’d surely come up with other examples from the rich tapestry of Magic lore. I must admit that it’ll be lovely to have another Weatherlight epos spanning over years and across the universes, but realistically, such a creative miracle happens only once in a while.
The much more hurtful issue is the half-bakedness, poor testing, and generally poor state of the design, something that’s clearly linked to a business decisions made in spite of the health of the game. It’s also true that this kind of doomsaying is heard for at least the past decade, and the Chicken Littles are invariably proven wrong. This once again means that either the WotC does their job well, or maybe all those factors don’t really matter in a context of what’s primarily a game; it's also possible that the collapse of MtG will come when either a real crisis or some novel entertainment makes the paper Magic obsolete.
EDIT: Yeah, we are not doing this here. Stick to talking about Magic the Gathering, please, thank you. I generally like to allow some leeway, but this is well beyond the scope.

This is something I miss about '90s Magic. Yeah, it cribs from things; yeah, it's influenced by big-IP, big-money franchised material. But at least you can't look at Phyrexia and just go, "Well, that's Ancient Egypt: The Set." Like, you're looking at "dark Satanic mills," you're looking at Inferno, you're looking at Terminator, you're looking at The Thing, you're looking at The Lord of the Rings, you're looking at the stories of Prometheus or Orpheus and Eurydice or Abraham and Isaac. You're looking at all kinds of different things depending on what you want to see. There are layers to this.
That's not what we're getting now, and it's been some time since we've gotten anything like that. It's just "Superheroes go to Locale X" repeated ad nauseam.
Also, re: capoeira, I keep reflexively calling Kamigawa 2 Neon Genesis Kamigawa. Maybe I'm a bad person.

That's kind of another overarching fuck-up in regards to Magic's decision to make Planeswalkers a card type, right - in the Before Times you still had these thematic blocks but the ephemeral central characters were still not always represented on cards because they were 'walkers, and the idea was that the *players* were walkers too, so you weren't just following some multi-dimensional Scooby Gang around and constantly play the latest version of them in a new setting. Instead you could see them by their shadow, the actions they took were on the cards. You have all these cards representing Urza's actions, Teferi's decisions, etc... but now you get one Mythic Rare walker with a couple abilities and maybe like some creature that's their "familiar" or wtfever.
So they tell these characters' stories in way fewer cards, and so the gameplay is less reflective of these characters because their thoughts and feelings and actions aren't quite as present on the cards. The trade-off is all this world building I guess?

The first expansion was Arabian Nights.
The first expansion was Arabian Nights.
Alpha had Black Lotus and Ancestral Recall.
Arabian Nights almost had another backside.
They realized it was a mistake and improved on it.
Even more "recent" worlds Lorwyn/Shadomoor, Alara and Zendikar are heavily inspired by other things but they seem less derivative and had a lot more going on.
Most recent sets pick 1 theme and don't do anything beyond it.
It feels more artificial and derivative and less "livable".
That also owes to the fact that they only spend one set on a setting which gives them less space to flash things out but that was their own choice.
Even the Innistrad double sets feel derivative because they take an already 3nd order derivative setting and then do derivative things in it.
Maybe we'll get an interesting preator in this set but that's probably the highlight.

The first expansion was Arabian Nights.
That's a good point, but (and I don't want to just parrot Zoid's statements above) The 1,001 Nights or whatever you want to call it is, in and of itself, a multifaceted and complex work of literature that crosses genres and has a vibrancy that you won't get from a linear and singular narrative. Sure, Ar-Rabiyyah (sp?) is a pretty obvious analogue for a real place, but even then, there's a lot of complementary and/or conflicting stuff going on that can pull you in if you want it to and, regardless, has something distinctive for people interested in a lot of different things. It's not just a continuation of the same irrelevant, script-botted hero's journey (heroes' journey? "Heroes'" journey?) across set after milquetoast set.
I just want some depth to the underpinnings of my cardboard-rectangles-for-kids game. Even when I was, like, 11, I liked that it was complicated and that I didn't grok the entire thing. Discovery brings maturity, and maturing makes kids feel mature. And I'm not a kid anymore, but that doesn't matter: the spark is gone, to be honest. I still love this game (it's gotten me through some of the worst times in my life), but it feels like the creative well has run dry and I'm just trying to bird-dog good Commander cards because there's no draw to the story and Storm is dead.

The only difference between Portal: Three Kingdoms, and LOTR this summer is that they can now afford the IP where as Three Kingdoms, and Arabian knights were in the public domain.
Legends was just everyone offering up their DnD Characters.
But also it's not that the well ran dry, it's that their over-arching story ended. Urza defeated Yawgmoth, and then they spun their wheels a but until they made their next big story which was the gate watch saga.
Which brings us to the next reason why the story seems so lacking: There aren't blocks anymore. The year long story of the Kami war through Champs, Betrayers, and Saviors now has to be told the week before NEO releases.

This is something I miss about '90s Magic...
I was told that this may be just a nostalgia, but I think there's much more than just that.
imho the old Magic formed a self-contained universe, and there was something really nice about taigas and tundras, undiscovered paradises, even crucibles of worlds. It seems like lot of mystery is lost ever since we're following a band of adolescent edgelords and edgeladies on their journey through more and more contrived worlds and adventures.
Additionally, and this could be just my personal dislike, I seriously cannot stand some of the decisions behind the Magic's main poster persons. Whenever I see any illustration of Liliana, it seems like she's a projection from someone's dreams; a dark shadow accompanying the Virgin Mother, perfect accomplice in a crime, your buddy's older sister, a mistress-whore-destiny, an embodiment of all-consuming sexuality. ffs, at least make the marketing a bit less obvious.
I also hate the very sound of "Jace".
That's kind of another overarching fuck-up in regards to Magic's decision to make Planeswalkers a card type, right...
Sure as all fucks, not only the pws are glued into already baroque rules, and thus they stick like a sore thumb even after fifteen years, they also usurp every aspect of the game from lore through design to promo material. You cannot simply take a shit in your friendly local gaming store without Jace shoving himself into your face wearing his "man i'm so tough" dark-blue hoodie.
Otoh I really like Garruk. I think that the first three or four cards were really cool, and so was Elspeth, although you can easily argue that she's also some kind of a sexual avatar.
And the new gen of pws suck even harder, they often got several absolutely op abilities, some of them static, don't forget to make the cards doublefaced, please.
Magic feels like several games thrown together, and it lost 90 % of integrity/consistency. There are spell-creatures, creature-spells, an immense amount of never used unnecessary card types that nobody but goyf cares about, idiotic tinkering with main graphic design that just further fragments the game, etc.
But I guess Magic: the Godfather will somehow save the franchise.
If I had to pick between a card game exposing my kid to either drug use or racial slurs? Think I'd rather find drugs under my kid's bed than like Gary Lauck's newsletter or whatever the shitty kids are reading these days
Absolutely agree, in the US there are 100k bad-book-reading overdoses annually, you wouldn't want to be another mourning fahter, would ya?
Just like St. Thomas Moore famously wrote: "Thou shallst abstain not from ale, not from ye stronge spirit that merely killeth ye mortal body of thine, but cleanse yourselve from all dissident thoughts, from every heretycal tome that leadeth thine immortal seoul into perdition and the fiery flames of Hell."

So I'm with you about that: Racism is a blight, and it needs to be suppressed or destroyed. I'm not making a point about moral equivalence.
What bothers me is that they're freewheeling all over the place with their attempts to produce a sanitized product that still includes necromancy, demons, massacres, "race matters" mechanics, now drugs, etc. (N.B.: Noticeably absent from the list of cards banned for racism are Extinction and Virtue's Ruin, both of which are far worse than a number of the cards they banned). If they're going as deep as they're going to ban Stone-Throwing Devils (I still don't know whom it allegedly disparages: Palestinians? Quakers? Palestinian Quakers? Someone else?), at least they should be circumspect enough to know that marketing fake drugs from a fantasy world of cardboard rectangles to kids is a bad idea. But here we are.

Eyeblight Massacre and Tivadar's Crusade are totally fine as they don't depict something that minorities could be projected on :really:?
Also, remember that The Meathook Massacre and Phyrexians flaying people is a okay.
What bothers me that it these things fall into a a taboo area where it is perceived to be better to stay silent instead of making a point.
A lot of fantasy deals with "real life" issues that are more or less thinly veiled behind some dragons and sorcery.
However WotC always pulls a "it's fantasy nonsense" or "a wizard did it" bullshit.
These patterns also contribute to why most stories nowadays are shit.
E.g. Urza was a complete shitbag and did horrendous things but was still better than the Phyrexians.
There were many different perspectives on the story and all characters had their own motives and goals.
Now we had the multiverse power ranges fight big bad because he-big-bad.
Storywise Liliana would have been the only interesting character if she hadn't been just cliches and tiddies.

It's easy to move from "magic is eliminating racially motivated themes" to "magic is sanitizing itself", but the first is a specific goal and the latter is too broad to really carry any weight. Just saying the plot of the Netflix show "Arcane" (The League of Legends show) was heavily focused on an underworld drug and it aslo had some racism in it.
And yeah way more kids follow LoL than some Mtg Lore.

My 21yo wants me to watch Arcane. I tried LoR and while it is probably a good game, my device couldn't handle the sound (or the app is poorly coded, either way) and I couldn't deal with the shitty audio. Plus, like, I just didn't see the value of adding Another F2P Distraction to the pile of shit in my life, so I didn't play for very long.

I guess it matters if the active word here is "as" or "when". The word "as" is generally indicative of a static effect that becomes part of the execution of an action (that's not Comp Rules wording, that's my wording). There aren't a ton of things that do this; the first example I can think of is Meddling Mage. You can't Stifle its ability because it says "as" and not "when", it just occurs as part of its resolution.
Buuuuut as always, this is rules speculation ahead of the full release of the set and that's always dodgy, so who knows, maybe this will be treated as a regular-ass trigger, I could see that maybe applying to the "when" part of the ability. If so then it's a really bad ability because it'll let you sac the creature as payment and then be open to Stifle and similar cards, boo

As you cast is the additional cost. The copy is a “when” trigger. This is basically the same as Plumb the forbidden
You have 2 spells so I don’t see how you get blown out except for stuff like amindbreak Trap. A 3 mana planeswalker that requires 2 counterspells makes me think this is at least in the consideration for older formats. It’s possible the “browbeat” effect is too weak, but I don’t see the issue you are referring to.

I think you are (at least were) right about the first part.
Casualty is not a triggered ability which you can respond to.
Considering that they change their templating all the time and the general quality of templating in recent years, who knows.
However, the copy should still go on the stack as it's done while cast and says "this spell".
Then you should still be able to counter it.
Otherwise it wouldn't make sense with instants/sorceries wouldn't make sense.
Here, the templating is bad in genreal as some cards "cast copies" while most just copy.
Anyone else really not digging the art this set?
Looks like Ravnica, Kaladesh and Neon Genesis Kamigawa had an ugly child which they dropped in the 20s.

It can. Just like copies of storm and replicate spells can be countered. A copied spell goes on the stack and can be responded too.

It's both. This is covered under reflexive triggers: The ability to sacrifice is an additional cost. When you pay it, the ability puts a trigger on the stack. And the trigger will resolve and put a copy on the stack. And then the copy will resolve. And then the original will resolve.

FourDogsinaHorseSuit

For those who need more, here's today's rules xplainer
As an additional cost to cast a spell with casualty, you may sacrifice an underling . . . sorry, a creature with power N or greater, where N is the number that appears after the keyword. If you choose to do so, a triggered ability triggers that copies the spell. If the original spell required any targets, you'll get to choose new targets for the copy. The copy is created directly on the stack, so it's not "cast," meaning its casualty ability won't do anything, and you can't copy it again. The copy is still a spell on the stack though, so it can be responded to and countered as normal, and it will actually resolve before the original spell.
Bloodthirsty though you may be, you may sacrifice only one creature to any one casualty ability. If a spell has casualty 2, for example, you can't sacrifice two 1/1 creatures, although I appreciate your spirit.

I disagree. No control deck plays beast within, but Path to Exile and boseiju, who endures and Assassin’s Trophy are reasonable control cards for modern at least. 2 temporary mana vs 1 permanent mana is a wash, imo.
Combo can play swan song because they are winning quickly making the swan irrelevant. Control will have to answer the token eventually, making it quite bad. Control is already planning on giving the opponent lots of time until the opponent runs out of gas. If you hit anything more expensive than 1 mana this is the same tempo loss as duress.

I agree punisher mechanics are bad, but I think the loyalty costs are hard to evaluate because you have 2 not 1 of them. Effectively that adds +1 loyalty to every cost. In a 3 turn cycle you can drain for 8 and make 2 devils at neutral loyalty. Would you play a 3 cmc pw with +2 browbeat for 8 life or 4 cards and -1 make a devil?

Looking at the <=3CMC
Ajani caller of pride is a 6/6 once equiped (4 loyalty, +1 counter, and then +1 from counting the counter, and then will grow by 3 each time you use the +1) - this weird double counting of counters should also work with Kaya Geist hunter
Huatali and Kiora could be 7/7s

Also, when they block a creature, they would not lose loyalty counters, I think. So, against decks with low amounts of creature removal spells, this makes some pretty strong defenders (the planeswalker can even block to save other planeswalkers).

Yes. Also damage won't reduce its loyalty because thats for planeswalkers.
What you'll have is a 0/0 creature with +1/+1 for each counter (so it's loyalty) on it.

Agreed, this is a huge upgrade from Swan Song or Spell Pierce in control. With Swan Song, the 2/2 was problematic because it replaces one problem with another that you still need to answer (and in matchups you really want a negate you probably want to board out creature removal). Giving your opponent temporary mana in a game you intend to make as long as possible doesn't mater at all. This will see play.

The gist is that you reanimate some nonlegendary creature from your GY under you opponent's control and goad it (= can't attack you) before exiling it at the beginning of the next end step. Why Hellcarver Demon and Eater of Days are bought out is beyond me, considering you can just use Leveler for a pretty much guaranteed kill.

If I deciphered it right due the watermark and shitty quality, the only restriction is that it needs to target the opponent which turn it currently is. So yes, you should be able to pull it off during the second main phase. Although in case of Leveler, upkeep should be better, for obvious reasons.

I don't think Riveteer's Ascendancy will bring Goblins back, but it does seem good in their colors. I don't know what Modern Goblins looks like, so maybe there? Maybe not good enough, but the Echo cost from Mogg War Marshal or Stingscourger to get back a Goblin Lackey, or just using Sling-Gang Lieutenant or Skirk Prospector to sack a Goblin Ringleader to get back a Goblin Matron seems like the synergy-valuetown those players enjoy. Seems like lists also run Fury, so getting back a cmc4 on your opponent's turn isn't too bad.

Oh seems so, my bad. Guess you can still use their many sac outlets to trigger on both turns though. Not a huge explosion of value, but I could see it getting an extra damage of two off Sling-Gang, which sometimes is the difference in the end. Just my thoughts.

It’s the same cost as cathar commando to kill something. No flash, but leaves a token behind when used or flickered. In Yorion taxes that are already running 2 commandos, this seems like a shoe in over the 2nd one at least. I’m not sure it beats the first one though.
I haven't been following the current Yorion Taxes lists lately, but if they run 2 Commandos, I could see a 1/1 split between Crowbar and Commado. Recruiter & 2 commadons gives you access to 6 copies in your 80. A split gives you effectively 10 copies due to SFM covering as well.

Possibly better than Orzhov pontiff in humans due to the haste (murders PWs like 3feri, wins races) and the bigger body. Drawing a card after entering the battlefield is even better than the body sometimes in a deck with Champion of the Parish

A card that is useful against Brainstorm decks that any deck can run.
EDIT: I cannot seem to get the image to work.
Even the Score

This spell costs UUU less to cast if an opponent has drawn 4 or more cards this turn.
Draw X cards.

Think bigger: play Standstill. Crack it on their EoT. Draw more than the 3 cards they get.

Is there a card that let's you play at number of lands ins turn?
Like a channel fire lands?
I think the self-sacrifice lands have something with like a crucible and this card I need to identify.

Fastbond is banned in Legacy. Summer Bloom is 2 mana and lets you play 3 extra. Manabond isn't playing lands, so it probably won't help.

I knew this existed, I kept getting the name wrong and couldn't get the text string right.

Seems like a good way to manifest some Dreadnoughts. I don't know about its cost though.

The cost is highly advantageous b/c of how hard it is to hit with Ending - particularly from UWr MindTwister decks. The problem is that it is blue; that it is Pyroblast'able has made it largely unplayable, particularly in comparison to Chandra ToD. Otherwise it goes into UR Dreadstill.
