I'm considering replacing all cards in one of my deck for japanese/chinese one.
I was wondering, will it look bad to have both in the same deck (do they look THAT MUCH different ?)
And where do you usually get yours ? I've seen some on SCG and they seemed ridiculously overpriced on ebay.

Just for fun, do you consider non-foil jap pimp ? :p

well they are different languages... yes they look entirely different... even s-chinese looks much different from traditional chinese...

Yes, pimping is a matter of personal style. I actually dislike the way foils curl and prefer non-foils.

Hmm, I'd have to disagree with the latter part of your statement. One is certainly more complex and blockier, but it's still the same script. In other words Japanese and Chinese are like apples and oranges (Mandarin oranges, I guess :wink: ), whereas comparing Simplified and Traditional Chinese is like comparing gala apples and granny smith apples.

On the bright side, I've just concluded a deal for a sweet half-albino underground sea. Half of it is pure black and white.

Why is it that Foil Japanese Goyfs seem to be listed on Ebay and I can't even get a chance to buy a playset of foil Spanish Goyfs which is my goal? If you want to be real 'pimp' buy the foil Goyfs that are in a less popular language. That'll make Magic players cream their panties even more I think.

This seemed like the appropriate place to ask this question:

For those of you with mostly/all foil decks, what sleeving, shuffling, hand-holding, and storage do you use to keep your cards from bending? Does the answer change for less or more foil content in the deck? If I do pick up foils for some reason, (EG: FTV:E Trinisphere or Berserk), I don't want to pick up a GL for marked cards.

KMC perfect fits inside KMC matte's... stored in a 'side' opening ultra-pro deck box (with the double sleeves its too thick for 75 to fit in a standard box) then you can pile/side shuffle with no worries... no bending, the only cards not foiled in my deck are forces and duals, never have problems... although the sleeving process is a pain in the ass, and the deck stays puffy for awhile (just cram the cards in the deck box and shove extra cards in if needed, then let marinade for a couple days, then the puffy goes away)

also, ultra-pro matte's work well, still use KMC perfect fits though.

Yes and no. There's zero Magic in the city I live in, so I have to buy stuff online, and what's available online is hit and miss. But generally, yeah, not too hard. So, I guess that's something to brag about... kinda. :wink:

Pick any random language, foil or not... nobody seems to have them and they're hard as shit to track down... non-foil jap goyfs for instance... months and I only found 3 so far, had to buy a complete jap future sight set to get one of them...

I just picked up a miscut theme deck, came with 2 of each basic, and 14 forest. Also 3 Harrow, 2, Tribal Flames and other stuff. The deck is in Portuguese. You can't see it very well on a white background but the Forests have an excess of extra card stock.

I had to have a friend get him to sign the front.

The card is half albino and most of the dust on the picture is from the toploader. I'm preparing a scan of 9 very nice recent pickups (the test EE is in there too) and the sea is by far the worst card in that scan. Till then.

It isn't for sale now, but it might be in a few months' time, and especially if I get a suitable offer. The only thing holding me from selling is that I can't recall seeing a full albino revised rare so I'm not sure if an upgrade over this is possible. If you like, PM me a price and I'll keep it in mind if/when I sell it.

I also have a number of miscut duals. I'll let you know if they will be for sale in the future.

I have an identical underground sea with half no pigment. By identical, I mean it. The area that is without pigment follows the exact same path along the middle of the card. I was so surprised to see it that I went to my collection to validate that it was not stolen.

It makes a lot of sense that they are identical. Intuitively speaking, it should raise a red flag that our cards look very similar, or even identical. However, let me theorise why they are so similar. The reason for that is that Underground sea was a R1 in revised and occupies the same position on sheets every time. A printing press that has essentially run out of ink on certain portions is going to have gone through several sheets before being discovered, which means that every Sea on those sheets looks like that. It could also result in either 1) the other cards below the sea and other cards on its line to be completely albino or 2) create albino blocks on the sheet.

I'm honestly not surprised that they look the same -- I'm more surprised that another one made it out to see the light of day. Thanks for sharing it, and it is a very nice misprint. One of my favourite colour-related misprints.

That said, I am worried that your first response was that I may have misappropriated the card. :P

Awesome. I have been trying to get russian foil goyfs for some time, but am finding it impossible to track them down.

@Occam. Just out of curiosity did you get the sea from an american collector who used to have quite a nice collection of summer cards as well as other misprints/rarities?

As far as I know he hasn't liquidated his summer collection yet. I placed a bid of about 7+k on his efreet, but he wants to sell as a set. In any case, if we are talking about the same person, he's a great person (we've had quite lengthy PM chats about summer magic and other stuff), and was also the person who sold that parallax tide island on ebay. I remember a real frenzy when people first saw that card, as to why it looked like that, whether it was fake, whether it was a 6th ed print or 8th ed print, how many there were around etc.

To add, I rarely showcase cards that aren't summer, test prints or which have special meaning to me, but that card was one of his favourite pieces, and is a very nice piece that people would probably enjoy. I'll leave the posting of other nice cards (miscuts, foreign cards, power etc) to people like you.

now that you've piqued my interest, i'm curious as to what exactly this card is

I was a bit lazy to do so before, but I recently took a high res scan of the Island for a friend, so I can post it here without the other cards if you would like to keep a scan of it. Just to be clear, the one that was sold on eBay is in Belgium now. Mine was from another source.

To those interested, I made a stupidly long post on MTGS about albinos and some general knowledge about them, as some people were doubting the authenticity of the sea I posted. If the mods don't mind, I can paste the post here as an archive of information which should help the community in general. Otherwise, those interested can look for it there.

Depends on how badly you want it. If you are patient you can get korean survival's for 15-20. If you want it badly and are willing to drop $25 each you could get a playset within a week.

I got my set of FBB Germans for a little over $20 from The Gunslinga on MOTL I think. They are quite nice, but I'd certainly upgrade to Korean if given the chance.

Korean is sooo much rares than German. It also looks really good.

The only real fun with German cards is the names. If it doesn't have a cool name in German though I am more impressed by French or Italian which are harder to come by. Russian is also extremely pimp.

Korean > by far any other languages
thicker than other cards, nice print colors and so much rarer.

i d say pimp languages order is :
korean > french & german & japanese > italian & Russian & Portuguese & spanish > chinese.
english ranking depends of the set.
the first printing of the cards will ALWAYS > a reprint (unless it's a rare missprint/cut)
DCI / PROMO = only good to fix a wobling table (unless it isn't foil)
and non foil >^gogolplex foils (foil is imho the wrost part of pimp)

I can't say I dislike the art on those promo's, but the new border is just awful. Jap foil vindicate and s-chi foil vindicate also happen to be some of the sexiest looking cards out there.

I disagree. I prefer the Tenth Ed. Squee. I like the art and the flavor text is much much better.

Yeah, because white borders look oh so hawt. I get that summer magic is ultra rare and expensive, but Revised cards that look like Fourth Ed. aren't so hot to look at. Just my humble opinion.

Agreed. Having summer cards is impressive, but as far as actually looking good, they comes up pretty short. It's about the equivalent of stapling hundred dollar bills onto eighth edition basic lands. Nobody is going to deny that you're rich as hell, but I wouldn't call it stylish either.

I don't like to get dragged into discussions on what type of card > another type of card, but I'll chime in a bit with my thoughts on the appeal of summer magic. I can get why some don't like summer magic (I honestly do), as it is after all white-bordered and borders on ridiculously expensive. That said, summer magic actually looks pretty good (white borders notwithstanding). The colour contrast is very strong, and I find it appealing. Compare a green Revised card to a green Summer card. The difference in looks is obvious, and the latter looks better.

That said, a huge part of choosing card aesthetics to play isn't just about looks, but also about forging a unique deck identity. That was one of the reasons for the migration towards Asian cards in the first place. Due to summer's unique place in the game's history, it gives players who actually play with summer pieces a distinct (sometimes rightly associated with elitist) identity, while also being an ode to the game's history. Then and again, there are those who play summer just to showcase the cards' monetary value, but that applies even to decks with Asian foils.

As for birds, the test print is probably rarer, but summer has a kind of mystique that the Jud prints just lack. I play Beta birds, though. Those look the best (save Alpha, which is dodgy due to the corners).

Summer cards do look pretty awesome. The inking is darker and it is very evident on the duals especially. Summer underground sea has the dark inking that fbb sea's have with a white border and they look pretty freaking sweet imo.

You don't seem to understand the vanity that Magic players have. Having Summer Magic cards is not a matter of how the look but about scarcity. Its the same motivating factor behind having a foil card or an old faced art; except with the former there is a consensus that the car looks better.

As for the argument that Summer Cards look better they only look better when compared to Revised and 4th edition cards. Anything else is looking at it through the filter that the card is that rare. The statement White borders not withstanding" is a big concession that the cards look like shit. Comparing Green revised cards to summer revised cards is a moot point because these are green cards. Wild Growth and Scryb Sprites are really the only green cards that would conceivably be played from the set, and when you expand to other colors the commons and uncommons that you can make a list for is still pretty short, and if you have access to Summer cards your certainly not considering playing Revised or 4th edition cards.

On a similar note: Is there any matt sharpee? (I'd like to BB some of my crappy stuff - Serendib Efreet, City of Brass, etc. - which is useless to hunt for.) Any idea? So far anything I used was gloss and the borders look hideous.

Sharpie is usually bad to BB with.
A mix of Carbon Black, Raw Umber, and a teeny bit of white (values differ depending what set the card came from) fluid acrylic paint does the trick PERFECTLY
However, if you are limited to sharpie, you can either simply rub it for a bit and it will become more dull, or use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

The point is not that summer looks better than beta, it is that summer is played for the reasons both of us have stated, and that it doesn't look as bad as is often pointed out. It isn't necessarily a concession that summer looks terrible, because it does not, it is however a statement that summer is played for identity reasons. Vintage decks with summer one-ofs look better and more unique. Certainly, a summer sol ring is a lot better to look at than the multitude of sol rings altered to look like Kenny or Sauron's eye.

If anyone feels that Summer looks like crap while just being expensive, just s****** to yourself knowing that your opponent has blown a couple thousand on that sol ring or tutor which doesn't look as good as your 70 dollar beta copy. The argument about why people like to play certain cards over others is boring, and achieves less than Clay Aiken at a whorehouse.

I think there is no reason to play uncommon or rare summer cards just 'cuz there are so few copies that u can't risk to deteriorate a milestone in the mtg collector world.

I love summer cards but they'r too much expensive for me right now, btw if I see someone that tutor with a demonic summer I'm quite sad and I think he's not able to know the "value" of that card!

In some cases, that's why the player is using that Summer Demonic. To him he likely feels it's the most pimp to have the most expensive deck possible, so instead of using a beta tutor or an altered tutor or a DCI foil, he's using the literal most expensive copy of the card he can find.

I'm really happy that a little bit of this information was publicly divulged. I've seen a lot of laypeople ask for tips on how to do minor things with cards and get no response. It harkens back to some sort of guild where only people in field could learn some of the techniques while everyone else was excluded from learning about some of the more baseline techniques and lost interest. As I understand it Bigup pioneered his own method of painting on foils to maintain a reflectiveness, and I can understand wanting to safeguard it for a variety of reasons. I will concede that there is a high probability that information is shared with those who ask just not publicly, but it seems like making a lot of the more basic information common knowledge would save a lot of hassle of people bugging you as there could simply be a link to common answers in your signiture.

Bigup shared his techniques with me via PM, not sure if they are all public knowledge or not.
A lot of it is really the same as what people have been doing with acetone, BUT there is a really interesting sandpaper method.

I came up with the mixes of colors for different sets for BB'ing cards, even though Catherine is better at actually executing it.
I also came up with the magic-eraser sharpie BB'ing method, I posted a BB guide on a lot of forums a while back.
I don't mind telling people how I do most things, I'm usually just really lazy and don't answer my PMs.

I might be one of the few people out there who actually dig the Anson Maddocks style of art, but I think he produced some awesome stuff, and the original Maze of Ith is one of my favorites of his.

I might be one of the few people out there who actually dig the Anson Maddocks style of art, but I think he produced some awesome stuff, and the original Maze of Ith is one of my favorites of his.

I like the original ones more too, but it might be because I hate the new card frame. I actually enjoy the italian ones the most. The inking is different than on english ones and they are much rarer.

Hey guys as i too much time the last days i watched some videos about magic card alternations on youtube. I saw sime videos where something like a "professional art/painting team" (i really don't know how to describe) did some great artworks, also everyone knows that there are not only the orginal Artists who did good work. So all in all i wanted to know if anyone knows where i would get such great alternations i could post here without paying hundred and more $ and maybe with having an a chance to know that i will get my cards back at all :laugh:

+1. I appreciate how detailed and beautiful some of the newer cards can be, but I generally prefer older art from some of the original artists like Maddocks, Myrfors, Melissa Benson, Christopher Rush, etc.. The old stuff just feels like it captures more of the fantasy spirit.

Very nice duals. NM beta cards just look so good. Glad you got an answer from Thulnath -- asking me about grading was probably a horrible idea as I have plenty to learn about it.

Most of the duals above (just from the scan) will get at least 8 from PSA, except possibly the sea in the middle and the signed volcanic. It's going to be tougher to get high grades on the alphas as well, as alphas traditionally have more centering issues and surface issues which get grading points docked.

In any case, I have a question that perhaps you, Jared, Comeback or anyone familiar with grading could help with. I've contacted BGS in the past about grading test prints, and they were confident they could handle it if I furnished them with the needed info. I'm still not convinced about their expertise here and whether they will denote the cards with the correct set etc. Most of my test prints are in really good shape (probably 9 and above BGS) and I think this could possibly preserve them better than the lucite cases I am using now. I would love input on this.

Heh, nothing specific actually. I just pick up stuff that interests me. I was working on stax and 43 land, but getting cards in korean takes so long that I just decided I would buy whatever staples interest me whenever I see them. This way instead of working on a deck for 3 or 4 months I will probably have the cards to build 6-10 decks within 6 months. I would probably want to finish up my edh deck, my highlander deck, as well as to have 43 lands, stax, countertop, and tes.

I think that next week I should receive the last 2 packages of korean singles i am currently waiting on which would mean I would almost have all the korean cards I need for stax. Now I just have to find more japanese foil crucibles, chalices, etc. I do have a 5th dawn crucible on the way, but they are really hard to come by.

Man, how much is the blue card in the second row valued?
Because a friend of mine opened a P:3K deck (or something similar) and found it. I know it's a horrible and useless card, but perhaps it could net some money..

It's like $10 - $15 and far from useless if you play EDH. He gives all your guys Horsemanship. That's pretty scary in EDH to have hit the table. I use it in one of mine and I'm never sad to get it.

I drool at the Imperial Recruiters though. I don't have a one and I need one card for a set of Three Kingdoms. Yup, stupid recruiter just had to be the last card to find. Bad thing is I sold one a long time ago before I ever tried to make a set. I got $90 for it, but now it' double that it seems.

HAHA! I looked at your deck and did a double-take. My deck looks EXACTLY the same as yours (minus the fact that it's DDANT), even with Saga Duresses and M10 Ponders. I even use yellow sleeves!!! I am like 80% complete though, missing jp fetchlands, FBB duals, and LEDs :(

I dislike foils for two main reasons: 1 is their value is very unstable. 2 is that they always curl. Meh, I'm just giving up and I'm now trying to get rid of every foil I have.

Don't know. Most of the appeal Guru lands have to me is because they're so rare, not because they're particularly beautiful. Fine, but not as beautiful as UG/UH or certain other "normal" editions.

I think the picture looks pretty good. But you're right, the real appeal lies with the fact that they're rare.

I ended up going for guru in the end. I also managed to pick up 8 JP Zendikar fetches last night too. My deck is almost fully asian:laugh:

I'm pimping my Eternal Garden list. Still have a lot to go though. Managed to get a hold on 2 Korean Moxen and a Factory and some foil land.

I'm going for as much as possible korean, unlimited duals and english foils for the rest (whenever possible) .

I've also started to collect every korean card there is. Have 4th edition almost done, half stronghold and half saga. Now the rest of the series and the expensive parts (Academy, Necropotence, etc). no, they regular unlimited lands. they are white bordered for two reasons. one being they are they only white bordered cards in the deck. so when I fetch, it makes them much easier to find. and two, its easier to keep them seperated on the table during those long drawn out games.

again, beta basics are like $2 each, I could have them if I wanted them, its a matter of personal preference. the same thing that causes half the arguments in this thread.

That was Harald David. I have to say it looks quite decent in white sleeves, but the imagination that he spent hours with a few rolls of Scotch tape and a eraser to white-boarder his cards like Goyfs, Fetches, Null Rods etc. still gives me the creeps somehow.

Does anyone have even the slightest clue who I could contact about obtaining Urza's Saga basic lands in Korean? I have quite a few in Chinese and I love them, but I'm looking to upgrade. I've scoured the internet and sent some messages out to folks, but nothing has come up yet. It's funny that if you're looking for the good cards and staples in Korean, usually someone at least has them listed if you're willing to meet their price, but nobody bothers with basics and it makes it a bit difficult.

edit -- though really, if you know of any Japanese or Chinese ones, I'd snap them up in a heartbeat too

Does anyone have even the slightest clue who I could contact about obtaining Urza's Saga basic lands in Korean? I have quite a few in Chinese and I love them, but I'm looking to upgrade. I've scoured the internet and sent some messages out to folks, but nothing has come up yet. It's funny that if you're looking for the good cards and staples in Korean, usually someone at least has them listed if you're willing to meet their price, but nobody bothers with basics and it makes it a bit difficult.

I know what you are talking about. I'm trying to build a complete korean set. I've already got cards like BoP, Crusade, Mox Diamond, Factory and stuff, and some (un)commons, however I haven't managed to track down any basic land. You'd think some people should have to have some laying around..... There are only 15 different ones.... Got to catch em all.

4th, 5th, Tempest, Urza's Saga

I have a TON of 5th edition Korean basics, like 200+, and Korean 5th is super rare, I just got lucky lol
Unfortunately it is WB, no big deal, nothing some fluid acrylics can't fix.
But as far as the others go, I have some assortment of them.
I have a lot more Japanese Urza's Saga than Korean, same goes for Tempest and 4th.

The most pimp is Japanese Mirage anyhow, it is the hardest to come by.

I was only counting each picture of 1 type basic land though :) It should be 75 basic lands (like I said, I want to collect all Korean cards).

This is true. I don't really have a problem with most cards. Having stuff to see > not having stuff to see. I never really was enthralled with Japanese cards though, probably because I didn't do so well when I studied the language :(

On the bright side, I tracked down people willing to sell several nice cards that I needed, including that pesky foil Saga bolt. On the not so bright side, my new dark ritual set is stuttering. I thought I had the two hardest ones, but the damn foil european ones ......

Anyway here are some answers to the questions asked.

@wmagzoo: the std weren't that hard to come by. I am looking for some pretty hard to find korean cards as well as jap foil delta's atm so in my search for those I come by a ton of other cool cards.

@yawg: the entomb is actually going in my sharuum deck. You should post your list somewhere though :wink:

And since there was a lot of talk about korean I just had to get a new scan up. I love korean cards and have been working on picking up most staples for a while. Still need a city of traitors to finish my playset though. After that I can post korean stax.
