Arabian Nights is pretty pimp, but in all honesty, 7E Foil Jap are probably impossible to find. 7E Jap foils are pretty rare and usually command in insanely high price (refer to goblin matron 7E Jap foil).

7th Edition Foil Japanese are the pimpest cities one can play with. The problem isn't how much you are able to pay. The real problem is to find them.

That was me. I'm offering more now; I still only have 2 NM/M Cities after 1 year of constant searching. During that time I've only seen ~5 on eBay and all of them have been in pretty crappy condition.

German FoW, if you wanted to go there. Otherwise, Altered is your only choice.

The real question is what is the pimp counterspell?

I consider Onslaught foil to be more pimp. Just personal taste. I always prefer PR Wastelands to JR ones, mostly because I really appreciate the old border. I guess it's a matter of personal taste.
Regarding Brainstorm, I think MM Foil is more pimp by FAR!

FoW can be pimped in several ways:
- Artist signed / altered, Garfield signed
- other alterations
- "translation" to Japanese/Korean
- bleaching

Regarding Counterspell: MM Foil > Judge Foil >>>> Beta, from my point of view.

I like the judge foil and the MM foils. MM Japanese foil has to be the ultimate.

I'm not sure which is rarer, the MM Japanese foil counterspell or the 7th edition Japanese foil counterspell.

Since they are test foils they'll never drop that much. I've seen a total of 4 and thats including my 2.

I think Occam has a playset of test print Cities and at least one Survival.

The Survival won't go down, as they didn't go up (much) when Survival prices exploded. They're rare as is, and there's only a few (less than 20, I'd assume) around. I don't think they'll drop to less than 800 if they even drop from ~1-1.2k at all.

If they got banned in Legacy and they dropped to a reasonable (1.2-1.5 a playset) I'd get a set JUST to play with casually. :cool:

The 16 test foils I sold went for $12,000. I didn't think it was too bad.

"Then" is the key operator here. Sets of Exodus test foils easily moved for 10k and up in the earlier half of the noughties. You'll be lucky to get half of that right now. I'd say you did pretty well for yourself, but speaking as a person who has a vested interest in seeing these be as highly priced as possible, no one can get those prices today. Or I would liquidate the majority of what I have in an instant.

However, I will never get why people think that Summer Magic stuff is pimp, or why English Portal cards are more pimp than Asian Portal cards. I reiterate, pimp =/= expensive, at least not to me. I guess that's why I'd rather see an extremely well-made altered card than another FBB whatever.

I repeat this every ... I dunno, but it's not the first time I said it. There's a difference between making your deck look pretty and pimping out (note: I think pics of pretty decks also belong in this thread). Making your deck look pretty is in the eye of the beholder. Pimping out is flat-out going for the most ridiculous obscene-costing cards which you start regretting ever to have purchased them about 10 minutes after you've done that. Summer edition is a good example for pimp: the cards are butt-ugly and extremely expensive. It absolutely makes no sense to buy these cards, you have to be really bonkers to spend your hard-earned cash on this. Or you're an actual pimp (or something similar) and the money you spend isn't that hard-earned.

The mat alone costed me 15 euros. The altering of it was 60 euros (which is cheap for a job this big). However that's still 75 euros on a playmat I don't even really need. Just as an example of doing dumb shit with money. I don't have that many regrets about it though, because I'm nuts :wink:

Fren; I would post the deck if I were you. People are always going to talk shit for a number of reasons. There was an all Japanese Merfolk deck posted a few pages back that was very nice. The majority of it was non foil and he actually used Japanese Tempest Wastelands instead of those Fisher Price DCI Foil Wastelands.

I beg to differ. Pimp doesn't have to be the most expensive, I think it has to look good. DCI Foil anything is basically crap to me, as is foil. I agree pimp is about being flashy, I agree. I think you're thinking of it like lowering a car and adding hydraulics with new metallic paint and a mural because you can afford it, whereas I'm just putting a nice set of wheels on it. Not that I can't buy flashy, I just don't want to. But, I think looking good is the key.

Oh, and to contribute to the pimp issue, personally, I find a very nice alter to be just as pimp as any other version of a card. For example, I have a nice alpha Sol Ring, but I'm also in the process of acquiring an altered version as well, to each his own. Oh, and I'd rather use regular English over recent judge foils (Dreadnought, Nat Ord, etc).

Well the Vengevines are unfortunately non foil same as the Triskelion. The two Ooze are foil.

I have been looking for jap foil Triskelion from Mirrodin quite a while but just couldn't finde one :D

Also the broad on the land has some weirdly shaped anatomy. I've never been a fan of MPS lands in general. Can someone please explain their appeal? I would go Guru or beta or Euro/APAC. In my opinion, old card face > New card face. I also don't like foil.

I like original non-foil English printings, unless there is a better picture on a later version, or having one of each picture, etc. I'm also generally not a fan of altered/signed cards. Boring, I know. But it's what I like. Especially Alpha/Beta cards.

A question for some of you out there: how hard is it to crack a PSA/BGS case open? I've never personally owned one, but I just got one, and I'm thinking I want to play with the card (more pimp to play with a Beta dual than just have it sit beside the table while we play...)

I'm just wondering if the cases are really hard to open and risk me damaging the card inside, or is it decently easy enough to open?

BGS are significantly harder to open then PSA due to their construction. The BGS case is a much more solid block of material. Both can be done properly with the right tools; something sharp to wear down the bond holding the two sides together and a flat head screw driver to pry.

If the Beta Dual is over an 8 I wouldn't remove it from the case, that would make some people. :(

It's a 7.5. It's got a 9,8,7,7 subgrades (iirc). It's a nice card, but just not sure if I should get another one to play with or not.

My Zoo. Obviously outdated, havnt played in a while. Some cards and the landbase needs to be changed. No foils where possible, just one vexing shusher which I seemed to have misplaced the non foil one so I just used a foil copy.

Gotta agree with you there. While I love graded cards, I cracked out all mine that were 8 or lower so I could use them (even some 9's). I think cards in that 7-8.5 range make for very nice "playstock" :wink:

Yeah. There were quite a lot of players running Moon effects then so I thought I'll try 1 Incinerate instead. I can cast it when there is a Moon effect. Then again I'm just trying new things such as Harm's Way too.

Sdematt - I have always hated foils ever since they came out back in the Urzas block. I remember thinking it was gimmicky and I don't like gimmicky shit. I think magic players are sort of frozen in time in the period that they started. For me this goes for the visual appearance of the cards. Thus I don't like foil, new card frame, new "fantasy art" art direction, new language, ie "Creature - XXX" instead of "Summon XXX", etc.

There was a real organic feel to the old card in terms of their flavor, art design, templating, etc that the new cards just don't have. With "new" cards it feel like everything has been dumbed down by focus groups and marketing directors.


Thulnanth - I guess I can see slabbing some really pristene Alpha/Beta stuff, but in general I don't really understand the whole PSA/BGS thing and am always surprised when people think they can get such a premium on the card just because it is encased in plastic. I remember about 7 or 8 years ago I bought a mint Library of Alexandria with the intent of having it graded. I got the card and then just decided to play with it. It's still in my deck, double sleeved, and in the same condition it was when I got it. I'm just careful how I shuffle. At the end of the day it's just a piece of paper, might as well play with it. :)

Those are some really nice card BoP2! I remember playing Type 1 back in 96 when i just loved playing everything i could in UNL.
Ok, at first it was cause i could not afford the BETAs but after a while i just loved those UNL cards as it was BETAs everyone else had ;)
UNL was a lot more unique to have and play.

You're a little off on the Beta dual prices, but it's expensive, holy cow.

Let's put it this way, if I've got foil Lightning Bolts and the Judge doesn't let me play them, you just do it anyway and have 4 regular bolts to show that you own other copies. Same as test foil Survivals: you'd just bring along regular Survivals proving you actually own the card, but are just playing with cards more expensive than the cars owned by the players in the room :P

Alters in a deck with only normal cards seems a little meh to me. The only thing he could do to pimp them is going Italian Legends (I'd rather keep the english ones) or take the Fire & lightning foils. If I were foiling out the deck, I'd go for the F&L ones, but right now he got every card in the most expensive version possible. That's a pretty consistent (and damn awesome) theme, even though I agree they stand out a little.

Actually I do, but I draw the line at playing with summer duals or the more expensive summer C & U. I actually thought long and hard about playing with a summer sol ring in my EDH but decided not to. Not willing to spoil the pristine conditions of some of my cards that I have, including the duals. I have the 4 summer taigas (took me 6 years to hunt down all 4), the 1 savannah for my zoo, but sadly only 1 out of the 3 plateaus needed, but still I cant bear to play them. I don't like the look of summer basics so they are just sitting inside my album, guru just looks way better.

I'll post a favourite deck of mine later, nowhere near the zoo deck but not too shabby either. Its non-legacy though.

The card has no text, just a red mana and the picture of lightning bolt. It doesn't have ANY name to be identified by, thus, by DCI, the card can very well be blank.

Lastly, you can't play it, and show the judge 4 copies of Bolt on the side. Proxies are only allowed when your card is damaged during the tournament, and only by the decree of a judge.

Anyway, this could very well be legal in friendly games, or in a local tourny with a lax judge, just not on a DCI level. However, the statement that the bolts are just 'legal, period' is completely false.

Personally I don't see why one couldn't play the Bolts, I cant read the Asian ones either so how do I know if they're the real deal? I still have to recognize them by the way they look so why can that not be the same in this case?

It isn't printed in any of those sets, but if you'd known any better, or bothered to ask, I would have told you that while these cards are typically referred to as "textless saga" or something along those lines, they are actually test prints for foil promos, which is why there is a foil promo version of all those cards. This, like summer magic, is also officially recognised by Wizards as they were partially released by a legitimate mistake.

You don't have to tell me what they are 'referred to' in the collector circuit, it doesn't matter.. They are NOT a promo version of anything. It's not an official Wizards product, and not officially released. They are 'recognized' to the extend that Wizards admit it's from their factory, that's it.

So no, there is no requirement for a name, just that the card can be identified, and like the recent textless promos, these are all identifiable by their pictures. The only possible problem is if their textless nature is used to mislead in any way, but that is a problem that alters face as well, and likely face to a far greater extent.

In conclusion, if we're arguing semantics, these will not be "legal, period". But they are legal the vast majority of the time, and the only times they aren't are typicalyl due to fraudulent intentions.

If you're gonna bother quoting anything for your argument, please at least not quote out of context, and at least read what you quote. Here's the entire paragraph:

Let me break it down to toddler terms:

Sentence 1. A card's official text is defined by the name on the card.
Sentence 2. If a player wants to access the Oracle, they have to be able to identify which card they want to look up, it doesn't have to be by name.
Sentence 3. Wizards will let you look up Oracle text if they are able to.

Now, do you understand? Sentence 2 and 3 have nothing at all to do with the argument at hand. You completely misinterpreted the rule.

However, that doesn't give you the rights to spread bogus information and make it sound like it's the absolute truth. I really can't believe you CONTINUE to quote and misinterpret 3.5 after I clearly broke it down for you.... It's not even the sentence that you've taken out of context, now you've decided to ignore the first part of the sentence, and take the second SEGMENT of the sentence out of context.... It's getting ridiculous.

There's really nothing to argue if you choose to ignore facts and misrepresent clearly stated rules.

My stance, from the very beginning was, it could be legal among friends and small local tournies. However, if you play it in higher level tourney, you could be called out on it and receive a warning or DQ. Like I said, if the head judge is lax, you might be able to get away with it. However, bring those to a higher level tourney, and you'll see how many times you get a judge call for it.
