You can still play with them even if they weren't legal, so long as you owned other lightning bolts. Point being, if I have six thousand dollars in lightning bolts, I don't think there's really a question about tournament legality there: if the Judge has a problem for SOME reason, I'm sure anyone running six thousand dollars in bolts would be happy to show they either own or borrow other copies.

I'm pretty sure Occam knows what he's talking about, considering he's a Summer and rarities collector, and has probably played these in tournaments.

Don't think my word should be taken for granted, least not outside of stuff I collect. In this case, however, the confusion is actually easy to clear up. Misprints can be played as long as they do not obfuscate fraudulently. A card that doesn't have a name (textless, or altered) or doesn't have a readable name still actually has an actual english name, even if it isn't visible or in a language the opponent understands. If you are asked to identify the lightning bolt, the card's name is still "lightning bolt", and the Oracle rules can be retrieved from that if necessary. The card still has to be identifiable, though, so that portion is up for debate, but a card like lightning bolt shouldn't have an issue, least not in a legacy tournament.

The head judge still has the jurisdiction to deem them unrecognisable, of course, but I've never heard of such a case before. I'm going to delete away some of the posts I made as I don't think they really belong here, so this will be the end of that story.

And to think I had a chance at one time to pick up several dozen of those bolts for $100 apiece at one time. Never thought they would be worth more than that. Moxes were barely that expensive at the time.

Anyway, Grandeur's zoo deck is awesome. It's definitely the most impressive legacy deck I've seen. You really can't do any better unless you start getting into things like signatures and artist alters, but thats not everyones cup of tea.

On a slightly[/understatement] less pimp basis, but still pretty awesome (at least for me): I'm having a perfect mint 5th Korean Necropotence incomming for my collection. Still not sure if I payed too much, but since I won't trade it away, value be screwed.

I'll post a pic then I get it (along with some other nice Korean cards in the binder).

BTW, while I was at it, I also managed to reserve a factory sealed Korean Stronghold box. Doesn't fit the binder, but I'm sure I can put it on a shelve somewhere.

Oops scanned the planar cleansing twice accidentally, should have been another card that I can't pinpoint right now. I play with japanese and korean only since I can read them along with chinese cards, the only exception are the set of german fows that I have in another deck.*I stay away from chinese though I can read them very well, since the older stuffs are hard to come by.

I've got 3 duals (Trop, Sea, Volc, but I'm getting the Volc soon) to get to have one of each, Wheel, the Power (I had some of the pieces, but traded them away for Legacy stuff and other smaller Beta rares), Time Vault (again, I had it but traded for Beta Duals) and a few random crap rares. I think there's 20 something total left to get?

For Beta duals, I'm at 12/40 so far. Not great, but considering I started working on a 40 set of A/B duals a few months ago, it ain't half bad.

Great looking deck, dude. All English original printing (mostly, or at least good art versions) is hot, and the foils don't look terrible either. Even though I hate foils, your deck looks very nice. Rocking the dual Tabers makes you a champ in my books...

depending on the editions it gets close to impossible to get playsets of foils.
9th and Ravnica are pretty much available but anything else is hard to track down.

i got to admit that i definitely like the dark coloring on summer cards regardless how rare they are. i like 5th korean as well which also fit into "white bordered shabby looking cards".

I completely agree with this. I know how to distinguish between Revised and Summer, but it's not obvious on first glance, so what's the point? Summer cards look terrible, expensive and rare though they may be. That being said, it's pretty impressive that grandeur84 has so many.

For the people that don't notice it, you don't care. The people that do notice it will be the ones who are impressed. When you're playing Summer, that's all you'll really care about anyway.

If some kid came up to me and called me poor for having white bordered duals (but were Summer), I'd let him have his fun and wouldn't say anything. But, when the aficionado comments on what spectacular pimp you have, that's when you care the most, and you feel proud of your collection.

I actually prefer the older editions of each of the cards I have. I don't like foreign stuff much and really push to get the English version. Unfortunately, that means I end up getting alphas a lot for things, but at least they look good. Kind of like Triskelion. I only use Antiquities ones despite the fact there's a foil one out there. I guess I'm just nostalgic. Though I do like Summer and Guru Islands for sheer pimp value. I use Arabians for Mountains, Sunflower Euro for plains, and alphas for Forest. That's about the only exceptions.

I personally dislike totally beat beta/alpha cards and would go for near mint unlimited at any time. The second photo is by far too blurry and in my opinion not worth uploading.

i've got other duresses - 7th foil eng and saga duress - but for me as a collector i always go for variety, it's an issue when i post a 'pimp' deck because it's always random and peps complain :( but i like the variety in my collection and i ain't changing :)

hey there, i looked through almost all pages of this thread - really amazing stuff here!
i just got into mtg after a 8 year break half a year ago.

started to make a fun t1 deck, pimped out but only for casual play, i never was a tournament player althoug i´ve won a t1 tournament back in 2001, but that was only 1 of 2 tournament experiences (what is called vintage nowadays).

of course i will post pictures, although this is a legacy thread, but i´ve seen some t1 deck here aswell.

i will have some of my cards altered, which will be:

1x korean brainstorm
2x korean city of brass (i think when altered they are more pimp than japanese foil 7th edition)
4x force of will, language will be altered too, maybe some arabian language. the picture will only be slightly changed
2x power artifact

i dont know if i will alter the korean academy, but i think i will alter the imperial seal, i dont like a whiteboarded card in the deck.

maybe also altered:
korean vampiric tutor
korean stroke of genius
korean time spiral

the money will decide in the end how much i will alter, dont know if necessary to alter everything that is not beta or japanese foil.

i bet it will kick some ass stylewise, cant wait when everything´s ready! =)

Yes, that is a full set. It took little over a year to finish that.
It's good that Finland is a small country, so you can track most of these pretty fast. Last card I got was Treachery.

hm, dont know, i see only one glimmervoid online and a 2nd one on starcitygames for 20$ but they dont accept paypal from europe.

in playtesting i didnt have any problems with glimmervoid.

and altered academies are really nice, got an english one altered, looks really cool, academy in the dark as well as a tropical island in the dark, they are lovely.

Because you have City of Brass and Gemstone mine already if you're playing 5-color Stax, which almost no one is, and because it's really easy to lose Glimmervoid to Hurky's Recall/Rebuild, Energy Flux, Gorilla Shaman, or anything else. It's a very risky card.

I also don't really... get the hype about asian cards. I prefer *gasp* french cards. Why? I like the sound of it and can speak it quite well, though my written french is terribad. 9 years of torture in school couldn't make me hate that language.

Anyway, I'm gonna post up some cards that I've picked up over the last year soon, probably close to end Feb. Actually, this is incorrect, or at least it is an incorrect supposition to say that high salaried folk would never invest in a game like this. This probably isn't the thread for this, but let me rattle off some advantages of viewing this game as an investment:

1) Unless you run a registered business, this is likely to be tax-free. This is huge, considering that short term capital gains in equities and fixed income are high.
2) There are huge inefficiencies in the game. Not having short selling means cards tend to be inflated by speculation without negative views being allowed to be taken.
3) Cards aren't expensive, and simply put, one of the implicit transaction costs of dealing with other investments is the impact your decision has on the market. For other mainstream insturments, it may be difficult to game the market. For cards, I can have a much larger impact spending 5k overpaying for Tabernacles on eBay and then starting threads about how they are trending up on eBay. Cue Tabernacle's price rising to a new equilibrium.
4) The prediction of sleepers is a lot like dealing with risky penny stocks, but the informational gap for guessing sleepers is a lot smaller.
5) The market for cards is extremely liquid due to its elastic nature.
6) There are a lot of arbitrage opportunities (eg price differences between japanese cards in Japan vs rest of the world) that aren't fully capitalised on because not enough people choose to do so.

There are plenty of other things which make avenues like this lucrative. I'm more interested in typical investment vehicles, and also draw quite a decent salary/bonus, but the unrealised gains I've made from buying undercosted rarities and from owning a lot of old stuff from having started in 1994 beats all the other investment vehicles I'm looking at. And is tax free.

@3: Did you already manage to do this, or is this more on the theoretical side? IIRC dahcmai mentioned that he did something similar with Sea Drakes when Faerie Stompy first appeared.

I actually spent $10 on that card back in 2002 or so. It's all about the timing it seems. Most collectors I know didn't really put a lot into their collections, they already had the stuff when it was new and no one else cared about it then.

You could very easily do the same with any card whatsoever, so long as it's rare and desirable. Look at any of the cards from P3K that shot up. People bought all of them, announced how they good they were, and then mentioned they were the only ones who had them.

Same goes for anything. If anyone had the money, they could buy all the BIN Beta Duals on ebay and screw up the prices/severely skew them, and people would think this becomes the new price.

In real investments, this is done, and it's also done in Magic. I hear Anacott Steel is the next best thing...

Hi!

Here are some cards from my fun t1 deck for casual play. So far I have 62 of the 75 cards i need for the deck + sideboard.
still missing a beta time walk and beta ancestral recall and imperial seal as the only really expensive cards there.

emrakul and german jace are foil by the way and perfectly flawless. and most of the cards are mint , the sleeves and the scanner are just dusty/dirty

a lot of cards will be altered aswell (at least 20), both image alterations as well as korean/japanese language translations to have a colorful fancy deck in the end.

nothing too special in there, but i like it a lot =)

I see posts of people not liking foils because of "curling". At least you can play a foil deck without having someone call you lots of bad names for shuffling it and wanting to play. I recently stumbled across my alpha deck and wanted to play with that, lots and lots of bad names...

Lotus Vale, Grafted Skullcap and Nevinyrral's Disk can be found in Korean on Magiccardmarket.eu.

Thran Dynamo isn't available in Korean, the last set printed in Korean was Urza's Saga.

I recently put together an entirely B/W aggro deck out of cards from Alpha and Beta. To be honest, I'm not sure if anyone would have done it back in the day, but I'm pretty sure it would have been pretty boss.

You can safely buy from people like Mirage and Twiedel, they are pretty good sellers. But I can understand, I hated to 3 party when ordering from cardshark back in the day.

Here is my gem mint playset of german underground seas, they are really really nice...
for me german ones are better than beta, i like the bright colors and the high contrast.
i also had a lot of betas so far, but i never considered them as pimp, to me they look boring.

on the way to me is also a japanese foil jace, korean vampiric tutor, another korean sylvan library, korean mana vault and some other nice stuff =)

now it is 66 of 75 cards ;-)

i don't get why people claim cards to be "gem mint" or "pristine" when they are not.
having really pack fresh, well centered and undamaged (in any way) cards in mind your useas look too fucked up to be even close to "gem mint".

the faerie stalker deck looks cool and is great fun to play. grats :smile:

One of my favorite art works. Most people gawk at a Mint play set from Arabian Nights. With test print Traitors and Summer Serendib you could make one fine Faerie Stompy deck.

they are centered well enough to get 9.0 centering at least, maybe one or two of them 9.5
the rest of the cards is absolutely flawless, and i mean it. every imperfection that might occur comes from the sleeve, maybe also from the toploaders. the cards by theirselves are perfect in corners, edges and surface.

i know the difference between bgs 9.0 and bgs 9.5

I wouldn't worry about other people hating on them. They're nice Seas, even if they're not "technically" Gem/Pack/fresh off the presses.

its overconfident to think that any of the seas would get anything higher than 8.5 overall. i would never hate on the cards as they really neat but with the experiences i made i am not able to share your opinion on them.

@ matt ... beside the moats, the elspeths, some guru plains and some of the crap everything of the stax is gone. it was complete non foil english so i guess none would have showed great interest anyway.

If you're going to get beautiful cards signed at least spend the cash to get a decent paint marker. I'm a hobby artist and I've had decent success with these (http://www.dickblick.com/products/decocolor-paint-markers/).

You literally shit on that card with a sharpie and if you bought it like that I feel bad for whatever price you paid.

Edit: Coming back to this I come off rather mean and I am sorry. Foil 7th Japanese is nothing to sneeze at and I just hate seeing stuff go to waste getting drawn on. It's your card and if you enjoy it, power to you. Thanks for posting I do enjoy looking at your items.

To each their own, I guess. I slab them when they're nice, so they don't get damaged. I'll be unslabbing most of my Beta duals Walter so I can play them for Mirkwood. But, I'm pretty sure I'll be short a Scrubland or two to be able to play fully pimped out (unless I crack my BGS copy, which still makes me short be one copy). Do you have one for lends until I get my last copy?

I personally really like signed and altered cards. I'm happy with the cards that I got altered with a marker from the artists, it gives a unique taste. :tongue:

I don't really intent to sell those duals or any card in my collection any time soon. Getting cards signed by the artist is what makes Magic so special for me. I suck at the game...Big time. I don't have and don't want to have the time/energy to be the best Magic player I could be. I don't care anymore about what glorious new strategy stumps which format. I just collect signed Magic and if they're even altered by the artist all the better.

Compiling the best and largest signed Magic card collection is enough for me :laugh:

The thing I don't get is the alteration by other people. For me any Magic card altered by anyone but the artist himself is worthless.

Every time a piece of P9 is altered by someone not Dan Frazier/Chris Rush/Mark Tedin or Mark Poole a million angels die :cry::wink:

It can be tricky. Make sure the light is behind and not above you, otherwise you'll get a ton of glare off the sleeves/cards. If you have one, use a stand/tripod, unless you have some fancy anti-shake.

Summer Serendib Efreet. The most expensive obtainable card, bar none. To put things into perspective, this is worth twice the next most valuable card is (summer hurricane/sea). Those who know me know that I've searched a long, long time for this. And procrastinated a fair bit as well.

Sadly, I don't have a larger scan I can share of this right now. I'll post one within a couple of days, I guess.

Why is the Serendib tipping the scales at 8 (am I in the right neighbourhood of price?) ? Is it just because it's so iconic, or are there less of them than the other summers?

As well, I'm sure this was in someone's collection. How were you able to persuade them to part with it, or had you planned to buy it for a long time? I'm not interested in your source, since that's your private information, but I'd like to hear more of the story about the generalities of it's acquisition.

Hurricane is 3.5K in nice shape. Sea prob wouldn't go for less than 5k now, if you can find one.

I'm definitely interested in upgrading, but a lot of summer cards are lower than mint these days due to their origin. This one is pretty unique for being labelled as revised by the good folk at PSA, though.

A lot of legitimate exodus foil test prints (silver bordered ones) were marked as part of batches. All the sotfs here (and the cots from before as well as other prints) are 100% legitimately obtained. Not saying that clean silver bordered ones were illegally obtained, though.

I didn't have one handy, to be honest, same as the efreet. Wasn't sure that people wanted to look at arguably the cheapest card in that scan.

As Brad above stated, Hurricanes are typically at least 3.5k. Some people speculated that they would be obtainable for about 2-ish grand a couple of years back, but not only has that never happened, but hurricanes have been moving for well over that amount. Summer prices are a bit weird too -- I'd put sea/hurricane in the exact same price bucket -- you'd expect sea to be higher, but I know of one EX one that moved for about 3k, and a NM+ one that went for 3.7k, same as another hurricane that went at about the same time. You also have Tropical Islands going for less than Volcanics and Tundras, and so on.

The Efreet goes for about 8ish because people took its correct printing to be a misprint of sorts, when put against the misprint revised one. That, and the fact that it is rare, meant that it easily became the most expensive summer card pretty quickly after the summer boom in the early noughties. If hurricane were a rare, that would be an interesting tussle, but I reckon the efreet will still come out on top.

As for sources, I pretty much laid out the groundwork to get the efreet a long time ago, with prices agreed on etc. Which was why I passed on the one on ebay last year. I pushed back on the actual purchase date as I was busy bringing in some of the other stuff you see in this scan and the last, but it was already done and dusted some time ago. It also helped matters that these rarities were going to a good home -- something I'd like to see if I ever sell in the future. For the test foil EE, I probably got it for a tad lower due to that, as its previous owner informed me when I spoke to the person.

Only the english revised versions have a green border. This is why the german revised bb and wb versions fetch way more then their English counterparts in comparinson to other revised cards (extremes like the bb Duals excluded). Never seen spanish versions of it, so I can't say anything about price, but all non-English revised Serendibs have blue borders and the original art.

Now, I'm at a crossroads: I now have 4 Beta Scrublands, 1 Pack fresh, 1 NM, 1 EX/Ex+, and one BGS 7.5. I'm tempted to crack the 7.5 to play with, since it was so difficult finding a beta copies (I could have completed this months ago if I accepted Alpha, seriously), and I'd like to play them in my Rock deck. When I'm not using them in tournaments, I'll binder/slab them anyway, so I figure I might as well enjoy it when I want to, and slab it afterwards rather than being slabbed without playability. If it were graded 8 and up, I wouldn't, but I figure 7.5 is fine. I'll post a scan before I crack it, though.

Crack it! I bought a PSA 7 Lotus 3 years ago and cracked it, too. These cards are made for seeing play not for having an inch thick layer of dust on them in a safe.

Savannah: Alpha Ex- (hey, it was $80, I couldn't resist)
Plateau: Beta, Ex/Ex+ (back has some wear)
Left Scrubland: Beta, NM- (the smudges are on the sleeves)
Middle Scrubbie: Beta, Ex+/Nm- ( a few nicks here and there)
Right: BGS Beta Scrub
Left Bayou: Ex+ Beta, some nicks.
Middle Bayou: Ex Inked Beta. No reason to ink an Ex or better anything, so sad.
Right Bayou: NM/NM+ Beta, trace amount of wear 1cm to the right of the title on the top border, with small printing circle. That's the only flaw, rest is on the sleeve.

Tundra: Ex+/NM- Beta, tiny nicks.
Volcanic: Ex/Ex+ Beta, traded a Tundra in similar shape for it.
Left Badlands: Overall NM- Beta except for wear patch on the left, bringing it down a bit. I didn't look at the left edge, only the wear on the right corners, and it was on a white background, so I didn't notice the other side right away. I got it in the mail and freaked and rechecked the scan. I wondered why I got a smoking deal on it. I found out why and was sad :(
Right Badlands: Nm- Beta through and through. Minuscule dings.

After seeing your cards and reading your grading of them (which is probably accurate considering your activity in the MOTL/MtG market) I have a better idea why I'm always so upset when I buy cards. I think I'm only happy if they came from the latest expansion - everything else seems way too "beat up" to me; perhaps I am too fussy these days (lol). :laugh:

Yeah they exist, if you are talking about green textbox borders. You can see an example here:

There are definitely more than 5 of those, as they aren't any rarer than the ones with other textbox colours. You can take that from someone who would profit from these being that rare.

@Sdematt: Nice duals, and the Scrubland you mentioned seemed worthwhile to me. In any case, I never sweat small margins on cards if the alternative means a lot more hassle and inconvenience.
