I play with all my beta duals, but most I've had forever (bought at around $60 or so) so they have had some serious loving over the years. I only have one beta dual ( an Underground) that would be worthy of getting graded so I don't play with that one. It's pretty flawless so I would feel bad to nick it. A 7.5, I'd probably crack and use. I never liked having cards that sit and collect dust, though I have a couple that are just too pretty (and costly) to play with. I keep a Amithelaw, set of Beta, Arabian, p3k, Antiquities, and a few older packs in cases, but that's it. The rest get used or sold. Oh yes, I use those Summer islands I have.


And thanks for the explanation on that Serindib. I was wondering what it was from. Is it worth anything or common among Italian stuff (as common as any other rare anyway).

Until reading this thread, I had no idea that German cards were considered "pimp". I always thought they were awful and preferred English. Same with Russian. Asian is just overdone. But next time I go on a one-day trip to Germany, I think I'll pick up some cards and sell them at inflated prices to Americans, yes?

German are easier to get, but I know a guy who can surely get ahold of whatever you need. I know he works with a guy in China, trading the Chinese guy's cards for his own English. So he could, without a doubt, do the same with Russian stuff. He's a dealer, but actually not an asshole. And although he probably already knows, I'll be sure to mention the American interest in Russian cards to him.

But German ones I can quite easily get. I live in Denmark, so it's an hour drive to there.

I recall reading on MOTL that Japanese cards really aren't much cheaper in Japan. Their MSRP and singles are more expensive, and they caught on to the fact that many out of country folks were buying them and selling them at a huge profit. According to one of the more well-known Americans selling in Japan, the lucrative gains ended many years ago.

Also, foils are less "scarce" with the newer sets so unless the foil is based on the old shooting star foiling method I tend to stay away from it.

Of course, this is just what I read, so take that with a grain of salt. When I go to Japan next time, I'll get to see for myself.

I plan on going to him once I get a list of cards I want in Russian together. . . and I know a friend found a similiar deal being friendly on MTGO and just asking what country people were from, and hit someone from Germany and got some cards off him through paypal. A couple quick notes: Some of the foils don't show up nicely (ie the Infernal Tutor), but everything that can be foil is foil (except the chain lightning). I need to get my Pyroblasts altered, I know. Boo @ my one odd LED and ESG. Past Pikachu #1 is the board. The three cards past the second Pikachu are not in my board right now but are mentionable imo. I use the Pikachus for ETW tokens.

If I wanted to waste money on Japanese foils just because somebody else says they're pimp, they're readily available to me. But guess what? I'm not seeking the approval of anybody, and prefer German cards as opposed to literally throwing money away on a card that does the exact same thing. When it comes to pimp, the only people that care wether you own Japanese foils or not, are the other people that wasted money on them.

That whole Japanese is more scarce is bullshit, I can find most premium foil in Japanese I personally like t-Chinese and French. I gave up on French because it's damn near impossible. That's because Chinese foils were first printed in Nemesis I believe. Masques and Urza's Legacy/Destiny had English foils in the Chinese packs.

I agree, Japanese just seems almost as common as English now. I prefer Japanese because I like the look of the text, but I also appreciate the look of German and Russian cards. Even picked up 2 German Lackeys yesterday and 2 Russian Tividar of Thorns from Channel Fireball recently. Also found a foil German Spore Frog for a friend which was neat.

Obviously you can't find any, take another 10 years and you still wont. Chinese foil welders do not exist, foils in chinese urza legacy packs were replaced with english ones, hence there are no chinese foils in the Urza block.

When a store makes their initial order for product when a new set comes out, Russian is one of the languages you can have shipped. If you know a store owner you could probably ask him to order a case for you (have to order at least one case in that language).

It's really up to the eye of the beholder.Speaking of general MTG community trends, Jap and Rus are currently seen as the most pimp by the vast majority of the players. Korean is also very pimp (probably the most pimp and scarce), and discontinued in production. Chi is worth less than english to me. Ger is very nice and collectable, and a lot of players love it. Not worth as much as Jap/Rus version though. All these, minus Chi, are very scarce, with Korean and Russian being the top hard to find (for Korean ebay helps a lot, Russian is almost absent from online e-shops / forums, hence very hard to find.)

The Badlands I picked up today, it's NM/NM-. The Taiga I got a few weeks ago, but never scanned. It's Ex+ but signed (the scanner deck and toploaders are dirty). I figured it was worth keeping instead of burning because I could trade it for an unsigned one. To be honest, Markers will probably get it :)

Actually German forces are quite easy to find here in Germany :D There aren't that many of them of course, but nonetheless German is not more expensive than English (or at least not more than 3-5€). However prices have gone wild recently. Two years ago I bought my playset (2 English, 2 German) for 60€, nowadays that would get me 1.5 Forces.

Every Beta card I've ever seen has the white dots in the corners... but I'm no expert.
I own a bunch of beta commons and they all have them. thought theyre not really dots. it looks to me like card was smaller and they copied the image onto a larger frame during the printing process and just never re-did the corners.

Concerning beta/CE/IE/AP volcanics : NONE of them have dots.

Since they were left out in the alpha print run, they fixed it (along with the 3rd pic of each basic land, and CoP black). All those cards can be depicted this way :
* No dots on corners
* black borders : typical "double" black border (like all A/B cards) BUT in usual cards (ie : not volcanic, Cop...) the inner black border is clearer while in those cards, the inner border is plain black and darker

Yesterday I was playing Landeed in a tournament. Round 5 playing against some Junk'n Taxes. During the middle of G1, I drop a Deed. I have DCI ones and I really dislike them (I was forced to buy em since local shop had only those available back then) and opponent goes like: - Wow! Beautiful one! Where did you get it? I'ts amazing etc etc...- I stare at him thinking that he's a) Idiot or b) he's kidding me.

There's something to be said for promo printings with art that's exclusive to that printing, like some judge foils (Survival, Orim's Chant, Wish cycle, Maze of Ith, Mind's Desire). I think the Vindicates are pretty sweet, but they don't have the original flavor text on them so I would never use it.

Some people hate promo foils, and there's some people like me who hate Japanese foils. I never did like cards that look like chicken scratch. It's a matter of preference. I like some of those promo foils. I personally love that Elspeth over the old one.

It depends on the card in my opinion. For Deed I prefer the regular Apocalypse version (I own 4 foil AP and 4 foil DI onces), for Orim's Chant and Vindicate (esspecially Vindicate) I prefer the Judge foil.

I just picked up another Beta Scrubland. It was more of a whiskey-induced impulse buy, but still, it's a Beta dual. I'm now up to 6 Beta Scrublands.

All kidding aside, I had promised a guy I know to buy his Alpha one to complete my set, but I hate Alpha. When I came across a Beta on Ebay I bought it, but I sort of left my contact hanging. I couldn't really tell him I didn't want it anymore, since he'd probably get upset, so I kept my word and bought the 5th.

The 6th I bought last night since a ton of people have been bugging me for A/B duals and where to get them, so I'm trading them away.

I'm not 100% done pimping the deck but it's a big milestone. The remaining steps are:
-change the Path to STP
-work a judge foil Land Tax in somewhere
-get that last f'ing Plains to match

Despite the ugly corners, I still think owning the original printing of a card is all kinds of awesome. Now, if I could choose and had the money, I would definitely prefer 36 Alpha duals and just 4 Beta ones over pure Beta. Hey, it's the original, innit?

Personally, I'm not an Alpha fan, original printing or not. I wouldn't be upset if I had 10/40 Alphas for the 40 set, since it would represent the correct A:B ratios, but I'm just not a fan.

That's why I like beta, it keeps things consistent. You have to have Beta Volcanics either way.


And those Ice Age misprints really are kind of common. Homelands had a lot of them also. I have several cards from that set with a heavy green tint to them.

I was only looking for 4 of each at the beginning (alpha only and beta volcanic) but somehow ended up with some extras, i finally grew up and decided it was time for other activities, so i no longer have this many but i still have some nice ones :tongue:

Edit: it's funny how the same card travelled a lot in a single year ^^ this demonic was a friend's one who sold it along with a mana vault, a balance and a sol ring to another guy i know, then Andrew got it in Paris along with the vault (ring?) and there you are. There was a thread on the Magic Libraries website that had a photo of an Alpha cut Volcanic Island that supposedly was not a fake, it was a Beta one run through the Alpha cutter or something. I tried to find the thread but couldn't dig it up over there. So apparently there technically is an Alpha Volcanic Island. If someone could post that thread it would be great.
