Yeah always try to contact them somehow first. Some artists hate recieving stuff in the mail to sign like that, others don't mind. Make sure your addresses are up to date, and keep in mind that the process can take a while depending upon what other stuff the artist is doing at the time.

Google them. Most have a website with a current e-mail and stuff about getting cards signed if they sign. I had stuff signed by Franz Vohwinkel, and it was a really great experience actually. Always ask first.

That's an absolutely incredible insult to one of the founding major languages of English design. Spanish in itself is nothing more than a bastardized form of Latin, which in itself is more akin to the "softer" languages. Trying to say either of these two sound or even LOOK the same is just ridiculous nonsense from any linguist's point of view. While both German and Russian "sound" terrible to most people (apparently a strong speaking voice and dominant sounding words makes them sound "too aggressive" to most, not to mention the dogma on both thanks to world wars), they also have some of the strongest vocabularies and very well organized wording and structures. Spanish, however, does not.

@ Adan: How much do you think it'd put you all back in Germany to buy a box of boosters of current sets and ship them overseas? I've never actually tried the math, but have been trying to get multiple German cards for myself and friends for a while now.

So out of curiosity while we're on the subject of Pimping and we've got a good number of international friends in this discussion, what's your fellow players in your part of the world consider the "pimp" languages?

From nearly every player I know around here in the NW that actually cares, it's pretty much only the Asian and German (and now Russian) languages that matter, because the romance languages tend to look terrible on cards, and pronouncing them makes people think you want to make out with them.

I personally think that Russian and German look totally awesome. I have Spanish and French Pernicious Deeds because ther is something about Ato Pernicioso/Action pernicieuse and Cruzado mistico (Mystic Enforcer) are just cool to me. I do like Asian Foil especially Japanese because the look is very amazing. I'm not much of a foreign pimper however, I usually get the rare DCI Foil stuff. I'll post some shots someday.

I like German on Magic cards in major part because German and really fun words to pronounce. Also, the German word for land is "Land." I cannot help but laugh at that.

As soon as I get home, I'll scan the gem mint Spanish foil Polluted Delta I got. Russian is my favorite pimp language, because I like finding cards that aren't considered traditionally pimp that I like. My Swords are Portuguese FBB instead of Beta, my Psychatog is altered instead of foiled, my Delta is Spanish instead of Japanese, etc. I enjoy Spanish as my foil language because no one ever pimps in Spanish, and I can also speak it. Spanish foil stuff is very hard to find unless you're at a show in Spain. It rarely eBays, etc. It's more aesthetic for me than the rarest/most expensive card.

Spencer's alterations are amazing, but also pricey. I remember someone saying they put out upwards of $100-150 each on their altered cards from him, because the extra work and inking with real ink-paint pens requires a ton of precision and artistic ability. Dunno if everything he does is that expensive, but I do know the neighborhood of $50+ is expected and probably minimum.

I've done some random alterations myself using the same style that Vromman does (erasers + pens), because a buddy of mine got me into it. I have a set of Reverent Silence that I turned into 4 "anti-powerful enchantment" cards: one for Leyline of the Void (the person being blown to a mist of blood from the "ray" of the leyline), one for Fastbond (a mage that looks like Sauramon/Gandalf the White overlooking the burning Shire), one for Survival (a sniper scope locked in on the Mogg that's still standing), and one for Oath of Druids (the Oath tree and most of the forest is set on fire, and the druids are clamoring around it). If I can get scans of them, I'll get them up.

Eventually, I will be working on other cards, but for the most part it's just been cheap stuff from my Vintage Ichorid deck. So my proxies for Bazaars, Emerald Charms, Contagions (maybe), and a bunch of the other "blah" images are being converted over time.

Some cards from the Mirage timeline look differently due to something going wrong in the print. A lot of cards look lighter, with some blue spells being practically faded looking. Is that what your referring to? I've seen it on a number of cards, it seemed to be a full batch or two that had that happen, at least English wise.

As for the judge promos, the Meddling Mage, Exalted Angel, Decree of Justice, and Grim Lavamancers all looked great. Lavamancer more or less for comedic looks, but the rest were legitimately good artwork.

I will agree with the ridiculous prices though. Why the hell do judge promos have to fetch upwards of $300-400 when they initially hit, when people KNOW their going to continue hitting ebay for months to come? Honestly, even being a King of Bling, I am way more patient than those that put out hundreds on a deckset of obviously overpriced foils just to have it first.

Well, that means that they spiked within the last 2 years at most. 3 years ago I could have gotten a number of them for between $12-15 each, because that was their norm. All of a sudden I'm hearing about them fetching well into $150-200+ a deckset (and by all of a sudden, I mean like a week ago).

Obviously this is news to me, as I'm usually on top of foils. But this was just way out from left field type of thing, I had no clue the card was getting that expensive. It didn't make any sense to me, since Slivers are notorious for packing both Crystalline and Muscle, and the Muscle slivers are still like $3-5 each, hardly comparable.

Heh, in here Finland (most of) pimpmen (and women) refuse to use Judge-foils, because they are toy-foils (and rather ugly too). The cards need to be old or foil, and no Judge/DCI/FNM/WTF/etc-foils, they have to be real thing. And it's tested that FNM-Brainstorms are far less effective giving you cardadvantage than the real MM-ones.

To the topic, I myself don't like foils no matter what foil they are. I mainly try to make my decks completely blackbordered and use Beta-basics. Signed cards are okay, but a little hard to come by here. And foreign cards are also cool, especially German, Russian and Japanese.

You must be mistaken about that price, or the person who you could have gotten it from was an idiot. Foil Crystalline Slivers are INCREDIBLY difficult to get, and therefore expensive, and have always been so. They never spiked in price because they were always that expensive. This is because they were an FNM card (before the ugly FNM was put onto FNM cards) but they were all stolen before they were shipped out. Over the years they have slowly leaked back onto the secondary market, but have always fetched prices of roughly $75-$100 each. There was never a "norm" for buying foil crystalline slivers because they were never distributed. Just to clarify, I'm not trying to insult you in any way, I just don't see how that price could be possible. Most people don't even know that they exist!

Man I really like the look of a full set of unlimited power. The white borders look so clean and awesome when you have like 3 moxen out.

FBB duals ftl though. Get some beta's. They are infinitely better. It's hard to grasp the awesomeness of beta duals until you have them and play them every game. The power wasn't overly hard to get ahold of here in Australia, just expensive, naturally....I suppose people have probably been importing power to Oz for years now, so there's bound to be some available on the market at any given time.

Surprisingly, the Legends stuff wasn't too difficult to find (with the exception of a pair of Tabernacles, which were a bitch to track down). The Berserks/Time Vaults/Old Men/other random old stuff took quite a long time to assemble playsets of.

Anything Portal/P2/P3K is ridiculously hard to find in Australia. I had to source most of it overseas, and even then the P3K playsets weren't an easy job.

I love everyone of the alterations, yawg, except the Shackles. I think for the lightning, personally I would find it nicer if you went over the printed lightning bolts on the printed art on the card as well, cos your altered lightning looks strikingly different from the printed ones...

Defense Grid and Mage are especially lovely, so is Karakas.

The trick is to use white sleeves. If you do a lot of the wear on the sides of the duals won't show and even a beat beta dual will look like its at least in Ex condition. I really should try and post some pics if i can get my scanner working.

I got one for two regular Fanatics, another for a Priest of Titania, and the third was involved in a bigger trade. I valued them around $2-3.

I was pretty surprised myself these were handed out. I've only been doing Magic at FNM's the past few months and long gone are the days of Duress and Engineered Plague. All I have to show for my efforts are Cabal Coffers, Wing Shards, and Roar of the Wurm. This was a nice surprise.

So these were given out at other events then? I thought maybe they were a brand new release.

The Fanatics are DCI Tournament Kit foils. Any store with a Wizards sales account can order them. Stores can give them out for any tournament they like. Mind Stone is the other foil in the current kit (and Llanowar Elves in the "Intro" kit).

I really want 3 Judge promo Vindicates. However, I've only found one store selling them (Strikezoneonline) and they charge over $90 for them. I know the dollar/euro conversion is pretty good these days, but I am in no way going to pay over E60 for those.

Other than those, I am prety far with foiling out my IcBE Goyf Control deck. I'll post some pictures after I've completed (received) my set of StP's. I've already decided I want a Tabernacle for my birthday, so completing the deck will have to wait untill febuari. I'll still consider any offers on those Vindicates though.

I can absolutely guarantee you that this was so in 1997. At Origins that year, the highest I saw a Beta Orb was $20, and the lowest I saw Frostbringer was $25. I remember it clearly because I thought it was completely fucking insane, and it's one of those totally random things I will always clearly recall.

That was also when Ice Storms were about the same price as Mana Drains, and people were trading playsets of Abeyance for pieces of power.

Love all this stuff. I actually joined up just to show off a few things from my collection. The hippies are my favorite, Doug Schuler used to stop in to our store once in a while (this was maybe 2001) and he said he had never seen any FBB before. The Berserk is a joke from when my buddy gave me the card, and it has really pissed some people off for after seeing it. The Sapphire has a funny story behind it, a teammate of mine traded 2 Avatar of Hope for it. Worst Trade Ever. I took it from him and told him since he was the Devil I would go ahead and take it from him since he wouldn't be needing it. It's also super minty, with no edge wear at all, nicest one I've ever seen actually.

I'm not a pimper (only thing I care about is black borders, and old editions of stuff if possible). here in Portugal there isn't much of a pimping culture anyway, that I know of. but there are the usual guys that are into asian cards (I only own 1 chinese nantuko shade myself and didn't pay any extra for it), I do like Italian cards for some reason, both because it's exotic, uncommon and no one seems to like it (seriously, the fixation for asian cards is getting old, it's not that exotic when everyone has them)

but it's surprisingly hard (as in, impossible) to get foreign cards in this country (other than english which is sold) if I don't resort to the internet. I don't bother with it anyways since my budget doesn't allow for it :)

I love Italian cards. I think the fixation on Asian cards, though, is because you can't read them at all - you can't even begin to read them if you don't know the alphabet. At least with the romance languages, you can read the words, even if you slaughter the pronunciation of all of them.

For me its the opposite. Asian cards just look like a 5 year old scribbled some randomg crap on them. I used to really like the romance languages on cards, but when it comes to old cards like mana drain the inking on the english version makes it look much better.

1) I'm old school, I started playing during the Weissman'ian era of magic and will always have a soft spot for "the book"

2) Counsel of the Soratami = blue. Concentrate = Blue. You could at least compare it to a blue card that it actually has something in common with, Whispers of the Muse.

3) I don't think Browbeat has ever successfully drawn anyone a card. Ever. If it did, it's cause their opponent was at <6 life. In which case, I'd still prefer the book.

3.5) The only draw engine that I think comes close in this deck is Scrying Sheets, but at the cost of 3 mana and a 24/60 shot of actually drawing a card, I'd rather pay the extra mana and give myself a 100% shot of nabbing a card with the book.

4) It's a deck that uses Rukh Egg as it's namesake, it's not a serious deck, get over yourself. I could have just as easily called the deck "LookAtMy4FoilBurningWishes.dec"

You are correct that it took me wwwaaayyyyy too long to get the Portents, I ordered them right after I posted pics of my UG Thresh deck, and it took like a month for them to come in (and it took me a month to get around to posting pics)

I play UG Thresh (World Champ version) and in that build, Portent is better than Ponder due to it's ability to disrupt the opponent. I also think Ponder is wwwaaayy overvalued right now, foil playsets are like $60. I'll wait em out and pick em up later

re: Plowshares
I guess that's a good enough reason to post this years version of my Angel Stompy build (seems like an annual thing now anyways) I'm actually waiting for a set of foil Knight of Meadowgrain to come in the mail to replace the White Knights. This is the build with the anti-combo deck version of the sideboard, and a saucy playmat that fit the deck really well.

Dude, I have a Korean Stroke thats signed just like that also, but the artist drew a penis with lines coming out of it right where the right hand is on the guy in the picture... its so funny to say "Ill stroke myself for X" and then show the picture to the opponent.

Well I play it in Solidarity so I usually do have to target the opponent, but the way I play the deck I often Wish for Stroke, cast it on myself for a large number, RFG it with Flash of Insight and then Wish for it again and kill my opponent so it gets used both ways :wink:

Man, I'd settle for a set of white bordered, English duals and one full set of fetches. As I've said, Buddah's collection is pretty amazing. I'd be afraid to keep it in the house...maybe in a fireproof safe (really), or make sure insurance covered it!!!

I had it appraised by Vandy @ the Cave and Insured... I can't afford a fire safe big enough for all my cards...lol

My collection is reaching like the $10,000-$15,000 range and I'm starting to just get worried about taking anything anywhere. Shit, if someone stole my car with my cards in it I'd be losing more on my fucking cards, how insane is that. What's even worse in a lot of ways is that it all fits in 1 case which I (idiotically) carry around with me sometimes. That's right, my ENTIRE collection. In 1 case. Yeah. I'm stupid. Anyway I know this thread needs more pix, and my full set of foil fetches and set of blue FBB duals will be coming soon, just gotta get my 4th foil goyf and a few more things before I drop the bomb on this thread.

When I bought my house, I was talking to my adviser on how to insure my possesions, and het tolfd me that I could insure my cards as just personal goods, allong with al my other stuff (TV, computer, bed, table).

All I had to do was making a list with all the cards I posses and make pictures of them as proof. The amount my collection is worth, along with all my other stuff is insured as a total package, so I didn't have to pay any extras.

That's how it works in Holland, I'm not sure if american insurance companies work the same way, and if there is any diffence if you are living on your own, of living with your parents. When living with your parents, I think it could be added to their insurance.

Edit:
My collection is only insured against damage (like water spilled on them or a fire) and theft from my house. They are not insured in the car or any other location.

You have to get it appraised when call your home insurance company and ask them if you need a special plan to cover them or if they will accept the appraisal and have it added...

You are correct that it took me wwwaaayyyyy too long to get the Portents, I ordered them right after I posted pics of my UG Thresh deck, and it took like a month for them to come in (and it took me a month to get around to posting pics)

I play UG Thresh (World Champ version) and in that build, Portent is better than Ponder due to it's ability to disrupt the opponent. I also think Ponder is wwwaaayy overvalued right now, foil playsets are like $60. I'll wait em out and pick em up later

I guess that's a good enough reason to post this years version of my Angel Stompy build (seems like an annual thing now anyways) I'm actually waiting for a set of foil Knight of Meadowgrain to come in the mail to replace the White Knights. This is the build with the anti-combo deck version of the sideboard, and a saucy playmat that fit the deck really well.

It's not my thing either (I didn't have them sign any of my cards), but the sigs. look pretty neat in person.
