The Black Lotus is a relatively minor piece of Power that typically shows up once per game, but has a huge mythos built around it in this game.

Ancestral Recall: Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie likes to party. Casting Ancestral Recall and drawing three cards is like a party.

Time Walk: Rainbow Dash likes to fly. Fast. So fast, she gives you an extra turn.

Timetwister: Princess Luna. Timetwister has almost been kicked out of the Power Nine. Princess Luna was kicked out of Equestria for 1,000 years.

Mox Emerald: Applejack. She seems to fit green, being a very nature-like Earth Pony.

Mox Jet: Nightmare Moon. The evil version of Princess Luna, who was eventually turned back to good. Black is a very evil color, that usually is used in conjunction with other colors to achieve "good."

Celestia is the ancestor. She's one of two mares on the show, is the mother figure, etc. Her clearest flavor link is to Ancestral Recall.

The mythos we as players -- external to the game itself and its mechanisms and flavor and whatnot -- ascribe to Black Lotus is not anywhere near as relevant for these sorts of considerations. Also, from a flavor perspective Black Lotus itself is essentially a blank. All we really have to go on is that it's called Black Lotus for no particular reason. The big black shadow unicorn pegasus thing is the clearest aesthetic match here.

There's also a real argument to be made that Celestia and Nightmare should in some sense be a pair, as they are in the show. Sun and Moon. Sisters. Quick! What are the "power 2"? Recall and Lotus. Celestia and Nightmare. (Also, calling Lotus a "minor piece of power" is just laughable.)

I bet you really loved it when Superman flew around the Earth so fast in the direction opposite its rotation that it started to rotate the other way, and time turned back. You are dumb. Rainbow Dash is red. I dunno who i'd put on Time Walk (I'd need to watch the show and learn more about it), but definitely not Rainbow Dash.

Derpy as Twister is one of the most compelling flavor matchups out there. It's a slam dunk and a home run and Miracle On Ice all rolled into one. It even neatly captures the sort of inside, self-referential, occasionally self-deprecating humor that I gather is one of the reasons people love the show so much.

Also, again, our external perceptions of Timetwister no longer being worthy of being called power is not the most relevant consideration to the actual flavor of the card itself. We are trying to capture intrinsic flavor here, something that would be as valid in 1994 as it is now (assuming Friendship Is Magic existed back then.)

First of all, black is not evil. Black is selfish and power hungry, which often manifests itself in evil ways, but black is no more categorically evil than white is categorically good.

It's also very displeasing aesthetically to have four of the Moxes be ponies while for no reason in particular the Jet is a mare. All five of the Moxes should be ponies (or at least kid characters of equivalent stature) unless there's a really compelling reason for them not to be.

Anyway, from my limited exposure I've gathered some of the ponies are more selfish than others but none of them really seem to embody that black spirit particularly well. Perhaps Gilda the asshole Griffon is a good fit here? Keep in mind I have not seen her episode, but I just did a little quick reading on a wiki in order to respond to you, and she seems like a pretty good match here.

Or even use pony-sized Luna if you have to, though it is displeasing to have both Luna and Nightmare on separate cards as they are, in fact, the same person.

None of the ponies really embody the spirit of white manipulation. When white is manipulative, it's usually because it's actually being evil despite strong conviction it is being good. Think The Dark style Preacher shenanigans. Yes, that card would never get printed in the modern game, but it perfectly captures the modern flavor of how white is manipulative. That's not Rarity.

Rarity is sophisticated, a bit snobbish, is a fashion designer (which color is known for design and artifice?), and her main magic power is telekinesis. Yes, other ponies have telekinesis, too, but Rarity is clearly blue.

And saying that Rarity is "honest and pure" and therefore should be white is so misleading. They are all honest and pure. But only Twilight Sparkle is most closely associated with Celestia, has an older brother that is a royal guard, etc.

Yes, she has a lot of blue in her, too, but if we are assigning each pony to one color, Twilight Sparkle is clearly more white than blue, and Rarity is clearly more blue than white. Also, Fluttershy is much whiter than Rarity.

Except when red does finish it, which happens all the time. I mean, maybe red is the most boastful color, though I think that's black, anyway. But boasting isn't red's most important flavor element (or even a large one.) Rainbow Dash is so clearly red that it makes no sense to use a minor character here when a major character will do. Using a minor character on Jet as I suggested earlier is much more justifiable because (afaik) no other pony-stature character really seems that black and Gilda is just an asshole.

And if you want to talk cards that really capture the bluster and boast of Trixie, how about Time Walk? Taking an extra turn is this seemingly awesome splashy effect that ... often amounts to little more than "land, go."

Discord seems like an okay fit here. The art on Time Vault looks pretty inimical and evil, imo, and Discord is inimical and evil. He is described as having "reality altering powers" ... taking unlimited free turns (as Time Vault occasionally does) seems kinda reality altering to me.

It seems like you rather missed the entire point of my friend's complaint. He doesn't care what theme you choose for your cards, as long as that theme is represented in a manner that is faithful to the source material, Magic, and their hypothetical intersection. He believes the wrong ponies were painted on various cards, akin to painting Star Wars' Emperor on a Mox Emerald, as the Emperor is clearly not green.

A friend of mine almost played his pimped out Counterbalance RUG last night all in perfect fits when he ran out of sleeves. Alas, we waited for him to buy sleeves and sleeve up. That would have been entertaining...

Since Ive noticed alot of other Russian enthusiasts in this thread, I thought i was alone in my preferring Cyrillic to Korean or Japanese, although I do think Chinese script looks cool too. Anyways I want to pimp out a deck I've created myself and I was curious as to I how expensive russian foils would be. None of the cards are expensive, relatively in english, no duals etc. most of the cards are practically modern legal accept for the Led's which already own. How would I go about acquiring said cards? Should I trade the english versions to help relieve the financial burden?

This is a deck I've been working on for years, actually; the general was Vorosh for the longest time. I've finally gotten it to roughly the power level I like and now I'm just updating it with new sets and trying to pimp it out a bit.

Foil Japanese dredge cards are my next target, with the exception of Stinkweed Imp - I like the duel deck art far more than the regular card art (although, if the DD version comes in Japanese, I'd like one of those, too).

I traded a bunch of extra fetch-lands for the Mox Pearl, so I now have 2 (Just couldnt pass up on the trade!).

For those wondering why I bought a ripped foil Hurkyl's Recall...it was mint before I recieved it, but upon opening the bubble envelope, i discovered that the card had slid out of the top loader and into harms way due to the top loader not being taped at the top.:cry: Just my luck especially since I finally found my 3rd foil one, but oh well...:rolleyes:

I can't STAND it when I get cards in the mail that weren't sleeved and taped into their toploaders. Just got a EE in today that had come out of it's toploader in the envelope and got nicked/worn all over the edges while getting scuffed up against it while in transit.

Seriously, it's not that hard. It's a damn piece of tape. Seeing your killed Hurkyl's makes me sad.

I hate the use of top loaders to send cards. I use the Ultra Pro Card Saver I sleeve. Perfect sleeve for shipping up to a playset of cards.

The ones I hate are the people who use toploaders, but then decide to tape it so that the card can go to the top and be stuck to the tape. I typically put the sleeve in the top loader upside down so even if it slips to the top, it's only the penny sleeve hitting the tape.

That and people who decided to tape the utter crap out of the thing so you have to break out a knife to get it open.

Against other man decks all it takes is 2-3 counters ... making Thalia a 3/2 first strike is great versus golems. He's not a world beater, he could have been a Tarmogoyf or maybe another Knight. There's quite a bit of competition for the dude slots. I was running Fauna Shaman so I had a couple of bullets, or I could just chuck extra legends for more Pridemages and Gedankensenzors.

I got bored of my old Ultra Pro deckbox, because it's so boring. Just gray box. Whee. I decided to make myself a new deckbox! Here are some pictures to show what my deckbox looks like now, been thinking about adding something. In the pictures there's missing a little cloth bag that I made, which will hang on the red ribbon. The bag will have ritual dice (http://www.gram.pl/upl/artykul/20110422131837.jpg) from Witcher 2, few old coins (including the ones which came with the Witcher 2..) and different stones/gems.

In the ribbon I wrote different stuff in viking runes "ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl ftagn" which should translate into "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming". Thanks for all the kind comments, everything was done by me. All I used was a old book for 0,5€, glue, leather & black boat cover -cloth and a Swiss army knife. Wish I had real equipment for stuff like this. :rolleyes:

So,

I got bored of my old Ultra Pro deckbox, because it's so boring. Just gray box. Whee. I decided to make myself a new deckbox! Here are some pictures to show what my deckbox looks like now, been thinking about adding something. In the pictures there's missing a little cloth bag that I made, which will hang on the red ribbon. The bag will have ritual dice (http://www.grrtykul/20110422131837.jpg) from Witcher 2, few old coins (including the ones which came with the Witcher 2..) and different stones/gems.

Here's the whole package! In the ribbon I wrote different stuff in viking runes "ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl ftagn" which should translate into "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming". There was still plenty of ribbon remaining so I wrote a part of lyrics from a song by Blind Guardian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVgUSPttNWs):

I googled for pictures about necronomicon and found a very awesome picture that I think is supposed to show what Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred looks like. So I used that as an example and drew my own. :) Under the picture is written more lyrics from Mordred's song:

Sadly, I can't go to BOM :frown:. I was just released from hospital today because I ruptured my cruciate ligament as well as both sides of my meniscus playing football. I can hardly walk right now and have to do reha exercise every day now.

Bought a NM Alpha Wheel to upgrade my Beta off-centre NM front, EX+ back Wheel. He had a NM- Beta one as well, but it wasn't as nice as the Alpha. Oh well.

One on the left: My off-centre Beta, still in nice shape. This one really pissed me off. In the description, he described it as pack mint, which it looked like in the photo. But, I didn't notice it being as off-centre as it appears in real life, and the back is definitely not pack mint. Problem was, I ordered it through someone via MKM, so by the time it got to me, it was a month afterwards and I didn't really want to send it all the way back to Italy.

On the right: My nicer Alpha one, picked it up yesterday. All of the ghosting is just from the scanner; in person, the card is freaking gorgeous, even nicer on the back. It has VERY slight dinging if you look carefully on the left and right, but otherwise very nice.

I have an all-misprinted EDH, and I thought that I should build a Legacy deck for the upcoming SCG Madison. I have a LOT of misprints, since I've been collecting them for at least 8-10 years, and I have a lot of playable ones, especially blue ones, so I went with a blue-white control deck. Remember, this had to be a 75-misprint deck, so that's why I went with Jace Beleren instead of Jace the Mindsculptor and that sort of thing. I went 5-3 with it, beating a lot of top decks. I had a TON of fun and I will definitely be playing a lot more Legacy in the future. Here's what I played:

viewed from distance it´s one of the crappiest decks i´ve ever seen, but if you look close you find some real gems like the forces, 2 of the brainstorms, the clique and the tundras.

though i wouldnt consider those slightly offcenter cards as misprints, they are just too common. for me it is value raising when a border is completely missing or a at least one other card is showing.

nontheless off-center is an error, but then you could also use 90% of the alpha print run as they are in average more miscut than many cards of the deck.

most badass is still this brainstorm! at least for me, but everyone´s taste is different!

EDIT: oh, i see again some nice altered moxes ending in a few hours aswell as some other goodies, but i have overstrapped my budget that much that i cant afford anything right now :-/

When you cast that back-printed Brainstorm and I swear everyone within ten feet of your match snapped their heads in that direction like they'd felt a trembling in the aether. People were like "This can't be what I think it is, not every card."

Does anyone in europe know if any of the bigger vintage leagues over there allow CE/IE? Seems like a ton of them spring up from Italy / Spain on the various sites. I know a guy from Italy bought my 95% signed CE set 5-6 years back off eBay.

Or were they all bought up to try and make fakes ... :rolleyes:

Can you imagine the agony of believing one of your power was real, only to have a deck check reveal it's a fake ... smack in the middle of an event?

How about this scenario, a spliced card - the front part could be real (you can't tell a CE front from a beta front right?).

I have a real beta jet and I also have a beta jet with no back that I can only assume is a CE/IE (otherwise why would it be sanded down?). I'll post some scans.

From what I've seen decks aren't desleeved in most legacy deck checks. At least mine haven't been ... and they are littered with beta wraths, armageddons etc.

Have you ever caught someone using counterfeit cards? Was it deliberate? What was the punishment? Could you imagine reporting someone to the police? Do you know if WotC reacts when someone is reported to the DCI using "real" fake cards, like illegal reprints from some dubious country?

I've been reading this thread for way to long and finally you guys starting to wear off on me. Right around the time of GP Indy, I decided for some reason it would neat to start working on pimp. At first, Russian cards caught my eye. Then after researching prices, I decided to work on English pimp instead. I've never been a huge fan of foils until I saw the foil FNM brainstorm. I think T-Chinese from back in the day was cool, but then they started printing S-Chinese, which is just awful compared to the older style. Comparing the stylings of Asian languages, I rate them as such:

Korean Style 1 (Visions, 4th) > Korean Style 2 (everything else) > Japanese > T-Chinese > S-Chinese.

For awesome T. Chinese I like old brown border artifacts. Like Smokestacks and Tangle Wire. The font was pretty thick and they just look angry. :mad:

QFT, even though Show & Sneak are more expensive I've had a more difficult time tracking non-foil Emmy's locally. Every LGS around a 50 mile radius is sold out.

i have a russian foil M10 playset of duresses :-P
and got similar pimping rules like you:
ru foil for new border
jap foil for old border
japanese double signed for the rest if possible
when i cant get it jap d-signed, then usually i go with korean, but currently only one korean card left in the main, one in the sideboard.
then for the other rest i have a version with maximum whiteboarder, especially the mana base (wb german duals, summer basics, ul moxen), but currently i´m using blackborder versions (signed/altered beta islands, beta duals, beta moxen)

and if there is something i can get a severe misprint, then it replaces any of those criteria, but i havent replaced too many of the cards yet, it´s just too hard to get.

So, here's some background. A few months ago, my friend Soly suggested I play an all-misprint deck. I have an all-misprinted EDH, and I thought that I should build a Legacy deck for the upcoming SCG Madison. I have a LOT of misprints, since I've been collecting them for at least 8-10 years, and I have a lot of playable ones, especially blue ones, so I went with a blue-white control deck. Remember, this had to be a 75-misprint deck, so that's why I went with Jace Beleren instead of Jace the Mindsculptor and that sort of thing. I went 5-3 with it, beating a lot of top decks. I had a TON of fun and I will definitely be playing a lot more Legacy in the future. Here's what I played:

If you can't see the card's misprinting, it's probably crimped. My misprinted EDH has no crimps in it because I thought that would be too easy, as I have over 6000 crimped cards, but I played some crimps in my Legacy deck because otherwise it would be impossible to field a playable deck.

You should make a misscut Nic Fit deck and call it Misfit.

I've had that Spore Frog for years sitting in my binder. Just wanted to show you its beautifulness! Loam is non foil. Every other card is foil. Also, those are my frst fbb duals.
