I have had the same experience. I bought four NM Beta Pestilence for a pauper deck. They arrived EX+ at best.

Same experience with troll and toad, missing cards (half order), arrived too late for a tournament and exc when sold as NM. Can't say I feel bad for them. (This was with a 500 euro order).

Turin's deck is insane btw. Those dark confidant alters are freaking insane. Can't say I like the signatures, but that's just my taste.

Hot shit, Matt. Especially the Korean Seismic Assaults; I like that art so much better than the art it got for the core sets.

I sort of wish now that Russian Tops were available; I love my German ones (and really, you gotta get yourself some), but "Sensei's Divining Top" always translates to something interesting.

And I think you should choose Korean if you upgrade your Wastelands; I have a German one for pride's sake, but it's less fun than some translations (like "Koth vom Hammerclan"). Apologies for the shitty scan--the card is pack-fresh, I just had some disagreements with my computer and haven't tried for a better pic.

Trust me...you don't want my job :wink:...One of the reasons I buy cards, get them autograph and sort in binders is the zen-like state I get into when I buy, send or sort those babies...Otherwise I'd be in the looney bin (or prison).

I put up an extra $350 in trade on top of my Unlimited Time Vault which he valued at $250. I was pretty happy with the trade :)

That vault is sweet. I was scrambling around trying to get a beat beta Time Vault. In retrospect I should have hit up SCG one more time on Sunday as they had one at $405. I probably could have talked them down on that last day. I picked up a beta Ruby from them @ $510. Which was basically my whole trade binder of crap, and I don't trade anymore anyway. They were on + 25% if you took credit.

No I never saw any. I didn't actually go try to trade in the CCG hall at Gencon. I dumped a ton of crap in my binder to SCG @ 25% bump. I'm pretty sure I hit every dealer who had anything ferrin' and didn't see any Russian Thoughtseizes.

So I got my Gencon stuff unpacked. Snapped some pics for community enjoyment (or flaming). I don't play foils. I don't play english (beta/alpha being exceptions of course), so I was on the Troll and Toad foreign $.50 box like white on rice. I had heard through the grapevine that the foreign project was over at the toad and that they were going to liquidate at Gencon. I was there @ 10:03am Thursday. I took the boxes to the left and one other dude got on the box to the right. He hit the foil boxes, which was good since he was a dealer with a booth. I looked over every now and then as I was having a circle hat orgy in the left boxes, he was riping foil russian tidings, jap foil snuff outs, jap foil generals of all sorts. By the time my day one orgy ended I owed $204.00. His tab was like $500 but he had $5,000 in foils ... at least, maybe more on something like eBay.

I went back late Friday and decided to try to get every EDH general in Russian / Chinese / German / Mexican roughly in that order.

My last trip on Sunday was another $40 in random EDH cards in R/C/G/M.

Most of the stuff pictured is from that box, notable exceptions are the beta stuff and more recent m13 / innistrad forward stuff.

I'm also mixing in the shit I got signed for those in the thread who seem to love staring at signed stuff.

Yeah I've never put Aluren together. Likely those are just hold overs from packs. I've got recruiters now so perhaps I can throw some pile together involving strixes, agents, recruiters, harpies, oracles and the mighty Aluren.

because i like juzam alters a lot, no matter if tedin is the original artist or not. an ancestral alter on ancestral recall would be too boring. and the lotus is really an eyecatcher, i´m very proud of it!

and the best part of all this stuff was the price!

all together this stuff did cost me exactly: 4580€ and no cent more. for me this was a nasty bargain, but it was quite an effort to gather that much cash in a short time! some of the stuff had to be held by the owners for weeks until i had enough to pay!

I am in contact with a lot of signed card collectors all over the world. I only know 2 people who have a signed Mystical Tutor.

Gary Leach (Vampiric Tutor), Una Fricker (Wasteland) and David O'Connor are among the hardest to get...Only a handful of signed cards exist and the few people who have them will not sell/trade them...

In my collection that's now counting over 32'000 signed cards I only have 3 Gary Leaches, 1 Una Fricker and 1 David O'Connor signed card...

Other hard to get sigs like Greg Staples (I have over 200 cards) and Kev Walker (over 150) are nothing in comparison.

Since I posted this picture (I did it on 4 website simultaneously) I already got 5 offers...HIGH offers...

Among signed cards collectors there are 3 types of artists...

the guys/girls we can send cards to and they return them within 2 - 4 weeks signed without a problem.

The ones that only sign at tournamenets

and the ones that don't sign (anymore)...

If you find one from the third section you might hit the jackpot...

....man, it was freakin insane! i cant remember a day where i got so much really nice stuff, and the stuff on the photo isnt even all of it, just a nice assortment!

been looking for the claims for almost 10months now, they were harder to find than my first playset of russian dark confidants, the mysticals practically took years and the one giant deal that included them went on for almost 5 months, but now they are here together with some cool other stuff. sadly not all the cool stuff i wanted because i ran out of money^^

the yawgmoths will is t-chinese and altered by ron spencer in 2005. the details are amazing! the card itself is also in nm/nm- condition! now my japanese double signed one will be sold since i can replace it with this one here ;-)

the russian dark confidant is foil, but it practically doesnt show on the photo. the elesh norn was a nice throw in for a very good price! it is nothing so special and it does not mean so much to me, but to have a nice assortment of cards for the picture i included it :-)
i was pretty worried about the russian cards, because the tracking status remained unchanged for 6weeks and i was freaking out that they had been lost,...i had almost given up on them! now they are finally here and are great additions to my ru foil collection^^

some other nice stuff came along today too, but for more bragging i will show it when some of my alpha power arrives. the power will be nothing against some of the other stuff =)

...and i also sold my currently last japanese foil jace 2.0 a few hours ago, so i´m not totally broke right now.

It's a difficult question. Proof collectors are an even smaller niche than signed cards. They're cool and all but you cannot play with them (officially)...

I believe nedleeds was referring the the previous posts, regarding the altered Yawgmoth's Will; it was T-Chinese, but the item description listed it as Japanese.

Going with that, he didn't pull the auction; it was completed. He just didn't ship it to the individual who won the bid, seemingly.

I think it's pretty obvious by the now-owner's comments that $175 "seemed too low" and he "thought you'd forgotten a zero" means that the seller of said YawgWin probably got cold feet at the end of the auction and relisted it because he thought he could get way more money. Which he inevitably did.

Well ... good luck to him making any money at DragonCon. It's pretty much got no gaming whatsoever left and is completely turned into an orgycon. Compare this to once getting an exclusive for DragonCon only Magic card printed for it back in the 90s.

The better formula is don't be a prick, limit signing to 5 if there's a line. Chat with your customers, and hopefully sell some stuff. I give Mark Poole as the best example ... if there's no line he'll chat and be the most cordial dude you'll meet. He won't charge for small sketches, but at that point you feel compelled to spend some cash on some proofs or matted stuff.

D. Alexander Gregory, Scott Fischer, John Matson, and Stephen Daniele are probably the nicest ones I have met in my time. There are plenty who are fine, but aren't really super likable/dislikable, and then a handful who are just insufferable (Dan Frazier, Ed Beard, etc.).

Artists definitely get nicer depending on how nice you are with them. At GP Vancouver, someone asked me to buy a ton of proofs from Raymond Swanland, so I did. I stood in line for an hour, then had to go since I had a class to attend (on a Saturday, wtf). I was at the front when I had to go, so I just have him a list of the 100+ proofs I needed and said I'd be back the next day.

The next day, I waited for 30 minutes and got to the front. We chatted, talked about music, and joked as he sketched, signed and numbered. Everyone else behind me wanted to kill me, and we joked about that. He said, "It doesn't matter, you've had to wait for two days. Plus, you're paying for my hotel."

As long as you're nice and spend a little money at their booth, most guys are pretty cool.

I've been going to GenCon for the past 6 years or so now and haven't seen him the past few years that I was there.

Other really cool artists I've met:

Wayne Reynolds - Very awesome to talk with especially about his D&D work and how he was originally trained as a comic/animation artist (which is why his art style is more that way)
Aleksi Briclot - Had no problems signing sets of all the original Lorwyn planeswalkers for me and was great to talk with about projects he was working on and his comic book work.

In the late nineties Origins, Gencon and DragonCon had tons of artists. I was 4-5 cards short of getting an entire CE set signed (Fay Jones, Snoddy).

The Foglios, RKF, Menges, Frazier, Melissa Benson, Poole were all at 97 Origins (nationals were held there that year I believe). I had piles of signed stuff.

Now it's a trickle of artists and WotC has replaced artists with photoshop jockeys. Bah.

Yeah, GenCon was the best place for getting autos back in the day. I attended from 1995 -2003 and as others said, literally everyone was there. I even ran into Richard Garfield in a crosswalk on my way to get lunch (I was walking so no harm, lol).

In '96 I sat down and talked with Menges for over an hour - he had all kinds of great info about the early days of MtG. Lots of behind the scenes stuff involving the game and the artists... very cool. This year at Spectrum I rehashed much of that info with Rob Alexander - good times, for sure. :laugh:

Yeah I didn't start playing MTG again until 08 or 09 and didnt start looking for signatures until 2010 or so.

On the plus side, I did get a set of foil Wheel of Fates signed by Brandon Sanderson this year! (hey, it's a Wheel and it has Time counters)

I have not posted here before, but i have picked up a lot of new foils for my Bomberman deck, and have gotten all of the Beta basic lands signed. Everything that can be foiled has been except for the Onlsaught fetches and Jaces. I will not use judge foils so the Flusterstorm is going to remain non-foil. I managed to trade for the 2 foil tops, the 3 foil Spell Snares, and the second foil EE at GenCon this year.

All English except for the German FBB Swords to Plowshares. I am still looking for 2 more or eventually Beta them out.
Something needs to be done about the Tundras though.

Long time reader, first time poster... anyway could someone enlighten me as to why foreign cards cost so much more than their English counterparts? Are the print runs smaller in other languages? Is the product just more difficult to come by in the US? Is it a combination of these factors or something else entirely? I have always been astounded as to why foil Jap/Chinese/Korean cards are so crazy expensive. I prefer black bordered (usually old school ones like Beta if applicable), English, foils... but then again to each their own. Thanks.

I hate merfolk because people can just stumble into wins with it, especially on the play. Dazing incorrectly and just barfing lords. Burn and merfolk ... 2 decks I really hate losing to.

Amusingly enough, I had a slight contribution to these coming into being. Deadpool is my favorite Marvel character. I recognized that cover art on sight. The person doing the alter didn't, which I realized when they posted a work-in-progress photo in the MTGSal altered forums. I found a big pic of the image (so the artist could see, and thus illustrate, that it's Daredevil and Punisher fighting in the scope view) so it could be altered correctly. You're welcome :P

The box isn't isn't in amazing shape; it is definitely played especially at the corners but is intact and stable. I picked it up to even out a trade for a Revised dual land. I've been looking for a box ever since I got rid of my copy's box in the late-90's. Plus, now I've got a backup copy of Goldeneye...because I can. Anyone else have fond memories of Goldeneye parties?

Long time reader, first time poster... anyway could someone enlighten me as to why foreign cards cost so much more than their English counterparts? Are the print runs smaller in other languages? Is the product just more difficult to come by in the US? Is it a combination of these factors or something else entirely? I have always been astounded as to why foil Jap/Chinese/Korean cards are so crazy expensive. I prefer black bordered (usually old school ones like Beta if applicable), English, foils... but then again to each their own. Thanks.

In the past, print runs were smaller (although I'm not certain that's as true these days).

There's also in part, I believe, the American love of Asian things which pushes Japanese and Korean in particular to go up in value (I don't think Chinese is usually that much more than English).

German and Russian cards are also getting a fair amount of attention these days.

I do...we played the hell out of that game. Perfect Dark was my favorite though. Remote Mine FTW. The previously mentioned games are probably one-third of the good games made for the N64.

Pretty much, the blocky T-Chinese looks horrid compared to S-Chinese. Around the original Mirrodin block, they stopped printing S-Chinese, and have continued printing only T-Chinese. This accounts for the blocky Chinese font rather than the stylized cursive font. Finally, they stopped printing S-Chinese with the stylized font and returned it to blocky font. This makes S-Chinese in the stylized font more rare and collectible.

Actually it was T-Chinese that was discontinued after during the Mirrodin Block and did not start up again until M11.

Okay, so it's like this: They were printing Traditional AND Simplified Chinese up until the release of Fifth Dawn. Traditional had the blocky font and simplified was the pretty font we Europeans/Americans think Chinese looks like (most of us).

When Fifth dawn was released, they stopped printing (the blocky) TRADITIONAL Chinese and changed the font of the simplified Chinese to an ugly one.

When M11 was released, they started printing Traditional Chinese again, but the simplified font is still ugly.

I had to order full edh decks just to get japanese Scavenging Oozes since they seem to be out of stock mostly everywhere.
The project is full asian maverick. I noticed that for lots of the staples the prices for jap foil and chinese foil are equal. Moreover, some chinese foil cards are harder to find than jap foil, because they are less popular, especially s-chinese versions. So my criteria for this deck:
4ed/Visions korean >> onslaught/odyssey style s-chinese (also 7th ed. and 8th, mirrodin) > other korean > japanese/chinese
Foil if possible, but I have to suspend buying the s-chinese foil fetches for a year, I think. Also lands that were not printed in asian language should be signed and or altered. As an exception I value the cards that were signed and presented by friends for me.

So I've been considering trying to be more focused on getting Beta duals and was wondering where everyone thinks is the safest way / dealer to get them from online? Given how many fakes there are out there these days, I'm paranoid about getting burned buying from an online seller.

Hah, I actually have a loupe and am fairly confident in being able to identify fakes. However, the amount of beta duals in this area is fairly low, so it's tougher to get them in person.

I don't mind paying a little more online if I can be certain it's real.

for example i prefer mint fbb over HP beta and alpha. I prefer HP beta over HP alpha (since on HP cards it is almost impossible to find out it is was beta once before or not). but i prefer exc or better alpha over nm beta. where to set unlimited and fwb i am not sure, but unlimited over fwb of course, but i think i would put top mint unlimited same as fbb, but revised is the last, the only version i would never ever put into my deck.

The place to get beta duals is Gencon. If you want a beta Bayou for example you can look at 20 different ones in 30 minutes if you want. In addition some dealers get cash starved trying to buy up standard feces. By Sunday half of them are just trying to get money for some PF Chang and the tittie bar afterwards.

Most will haggle a little and you have 4-5 big internet dealers you can use as a baseline. Even the big guys will haggle a bit if you have cash.

Of course make sure you know some basic testing techniques to make sure you aren't getting anally raided.
