Uncut sheets are never worth more than the actual set in summation, though. 20k for the sheet, even if it is magic backed, is horrendously high because of how hard it is to cut it. That said, the couple of revised sheets that were "miscut" and went on ebay made the seller almost five figures in profit. This is exactly why people who collect miscuts should always be wary of that possibility, and those aren't even the only things cut from sheets and passed off as actual cards that I've seen on ebay.

Technically, yes. Although people have tried to cut sheets to be perfect, they are usually not successful. Cutting a sheet perfectly isn't easy to do. Also, I think I'd rather have an uncut beta sheet as only a handful exist while the number of beta power and such far exceeds the number of sheets of beta on the market.

If you miscut the sheet and flood the market with miscut betas that would raise eyebrows, I'd be wary of buying into miscut A/B/U Power too unless I physically inspect them first. As for cutting the sheet, there's a cutter available in the market that is used to make poker cards (identical in size to mtg cards). For the corners, there are corner cutters available, 1mm for Beta and 2mm for a more round Alpha corner. It is easy to make Betas into Alphas, but impossible to make Betas from Alphas obv. This is another reason why I am never fond of Alpha cards. If Alpha power command higher price tags, then 2mm cutter is the way to go. You can't turn Beta in Alpha at this point in the game. You could tell the difference, whether it was professionally cut or not. The cards are too old now.

EDIT: You'd be exposing "new" cardstock that hasn't been exposed for 20+ years compared to the other edges which have. There would be a colour difference. The newly cut corners, when viewed from the sides, would look fresher.

let me rephrase... I dont like foreign cards because i don't think the text looks good. They create problems in tournaments when trying to refer to text. Even though you know your cards your opponent doesnt. and I guess i dont appreciate their scarcity...

Looking through my collection of unfinished decks that were meant to be fully-asian, fully-BB, I'm starting to think that a fully-ENG, fully-WB is the new way to pimp... :smile:

Shame that I already spent some money on oriental stuff. If I can't make a totally foreign Legacy deck - I mean completely JPN/KOR/CHI, because adding GER/ITA* is not exactly the same as making it solely of the three asian languages -, then it loses bit of its pimpness. For me, of course; your opinions might differ.


Btw, I really like asian cards. And I really don't care if snobs/haters (note: this ain't directed at you!) say that I'm a wannabe.
First: fonts look nice. I don't need to understand the language and I may still appreciate the beauty of the font in the same way as I don't need to understand Chinese/Korean/Japanese and still like their art/countryside/anything.
Second: In fact I like that I can't read the cards. Every time I see Willenskraft that's an Unterbrechungszauber (or any other old card with completely sick wording, discontinued card type, messed up text, rulings that don't work anymore, etc.), I wish that I rather can't read that card.

Playing with JPN/KOR/CHI is like having all your cards updated to most recent errata, with the added bonus that the fonts are (mostly) beautiful. (Yes, some of the T-Chinese - amirite? - cards use a font that's ugly, but well, mostly they're nice.)

The color difference would mainly be due to oxidation, and dirt to some extent. I am certain the aged look of paper isn't something that's completely unreproducible. The old edges can also be cleared with an eraser to some degree to match the fresh cut corners. It is possible if someone is willing to do it.

I posted a sweet one for a friend some time back. Funny thing is, I have all the cards to make that deck too (except some of the japanese foils I didn't bother with), and could do better on Karn as well.

That deck is sick as fuck as well. The German guy's shops deck was russian foil where possible and he had just about everything signed and kaja foglio had a paint orgy on his shops. No summer ring/vault which is obviously insane. He has the test print COTs but this was real sanctioned vintage :) Anyway it was a sweet deck. He crushed me in the final swiss round but I avenged myself in the top 8.

Meddling Mage was an MVP in vintage all day hopefully Pikula makes it to Eternal Weekend and I can get those inked up. There's a story behind each card, nothing special, usualy just some small thing. (E.g. Swords and Geddons I played in NQGw years ago, Heaths are pretty worn, I got them since I returned to game in 2005/6, I used them in Ext and then when I moved to Legacy I played them a lot, I got three Libraries for years and never played them until now, the Angels are from the same Haterator as Heaths and thus look quite the same.)

Oh, and a buddy of mine has a set of jap. Terravores. I need to get in contact with him... :smile:

PS: Yeah, deck sucks by this thread standards, I know it, no need to mention that. It's just a personal thing for me and I was really happy when I played it last week. In fact this is my new take on my old pet deck of past; this is how I would (should?) build my Creaturegeddon when our casual group was active. If I'd return in time back to early 2000's, this is how the deck would look like.

Honestly compared to what you could pick up I didn't pick up shit. There were $800 beta volcanics, $350 beta non-blue duals ... etc.. Also if you want to get powered up and are OK with unlimited played you can kill it with cash at Gencon.

I'm not going to put 9k aside in a safe deposit for 3 months while he works on make an extra 100 euro by driving bids against each other. Could I have paid more than the eventual buyer? Yeah perhaps, but didn't have interest in working with the people selling.

Yeah Jason Engle was actually very cool to talk with. Part of the fun getting signed for me is actually speaking with the artists and hearing their stories from behind the scenes. It's more fun for me talking with the new young artists who are generally happy and enthusiastic. With a lot of the older artists, you can really tell some of them are bitter about being more popular in our community for their older art, heh.

Very, very nice. I was close 57/60 (though using Unlimited over Beta), but when foil Jaces went from $250 to $800, I knew I was priced out. Respect though, not an easy bunch of cards to obtain.

I gotta ask, and i think this is the place for it. Im operating under the assumption that japanese, korean, and russian foils are the move valuable because of their scarcity. Does anyone know how scarce they actually are? Numbers, distributions compared to English and so forth?

I'm guessing that they are also more scarce because they are not offered as possible redemption options from MTGO, is that correct?

I also picked up a really interesting piece today. I know there exists Alpha-cut Beta (due to the presence of Alpha Volcanic(s)), but I think I may have bought into (unknowingly) and Alpha-cut Beta Tropical Island. I didn't notice it when I picked it up, but it's Alpha cut with Jesper as the artist credit.

I did the bend test, and I'll take a jeweler's loupe and do the light test tomorrow morning to make sure it's not fake (99.9% sure it's legit). It's from Troll and Toad and the owner had it since early 2000, so this is a most interesting thing. I'm wondering if this was legitimately cut with Alpha dies or cut AFTER leaving Wizards.

The issue is, there would be no point 12-13 years ago to cut a Beta into an Alpha, considering Alpha only a few years previous Alpha was not legal for play/not in high demand due to the card uniformity issues.

Went on a trip on Saturday with the kids found a card shop having a buy one get one sale. Had a couple Beta Scrublands not in the best condition some whiting around the edges and back but they was $249 each so I got a playset for $500 :0 Picked up a bunch of other stuff at the same time like a beta Sol ring Demonic Tutor etc.

I don't know if this is helpful in the cracking cases department, but the few I've done I've used the short blade on a Swiss Army Knife (not the crappy keychain ones, but a real Swiss army knife, the one with the large and small blades). The blade is thin and sharp enough to fit between the two pieces at the top (where the info label is) then I just slid it in and twisted and the case cracked open. I would recommend being careful if you do this as you are dealing with a sharp knife, and more importantly, keep the knife away from the card. A cut will heal, but you can't fix an alpha/beta that you cut with your knife. One must have priorities. :)

I'm a sucker for any alpha/beta cards. They all look beautiful assuming the face is good (who cares about that back anyways when it's in an opaque sleeve I'm never taking it out of....) I have a playset of alpha lightning bolts just because I can, I haven't actually played them since I got the set completed. Probably should but on the other side I could just play that other 3 for 1 that I own a playset of in beta...

When I saw that card I thought "pyroclasm with an art I've never seen before I'm guessing?" Looked it up and just thought of how cool it looked. Pretty incredible art. Should pick some of those up if I get the chance.

I knew about the volcanic. Especially when someone tried to sell me one and I decided to mess with him lol. He said it is a mint Alpha Volcanic , showed me and yep it was nice condition . He told me he wanted $600 and I told him I feel like I am ripping him off at that price so I told him I would pay $1000. He was like ok deal and then I said you didnt let me finish. "I would pay you $1000 if this was real and was not a Beta with cut corners".

He stormed off mad he got caught.

The more you know... Thanks for the info. I was somehow unaware of this fact despite my love for all things Alpha. I guess pimpin' properly does require academic rigor. I should poke around on Librarities more. I'd love to see more examples of "Alpha" Betas (and also "Alpha" 4th edition cards, if Matt's memory does indeed serve correctly). Wouldn't some Betas cut with rounded corners be essentially indistinguishable from real Alphas?

In other news, I've got a seriously sexy deck begging to be posted, but I'm waiting until after the event it was built for before posting (paranoia, paranoia, la de da da da...). I agree breaking these open wears on the nerves. This was my final piece and it's the only case I've opened. Needless to say, I didn't want to end up with an unplayable damaged card. The good thing was I was able to get this for the same price as beat up lotus. I think people looking at graded pieces laugh at the 6.5 and people looking for playable pieces are scared off by the case.

Actually, this is not an "Alpha cut Beta" Volcanic at all. If you look at the picture, the card actually has the white dots at the corners, whereas Beta Volcanics do not have the white dots at the corners - just like the other cards that were missing from Alpha. I think the general consensus amongst high end collectors is that this volcanic is either fake or some type of alpha testprint/Edgar recalled type of card. You can draw your own conclusions, but it's certainly not cut from a beta sheet.

The claim that maybe one beta sheet was printed with alpha style borders and cut like alpha cards seems purely fictional at best.

Yeah, that's the thing, I could have spent $400 on an MP Pearl or a low grade Pearl. I suppose a little bit of risk and you are rewarded, but you'd figure the retailers would just crack open low-grades. I've been told bandsaws are a pretty foolproof way of opening cases, but I didn't have access to one.

1 - Take a hack saw and cut from right to left about 3/16 of an inch above the card. The hack saw fine teeth so it will cut a nice edge and will help prevent damaging the card. Every once in a while you have to use a vacuum to remove the plastic particles so they do not build up. I have done the cutting while a friend holds a vacuum hose under the case.

2- Also you can pick up a small hand tool at home depot/lowes. It looks like a small knife with a hook end. Also grab a chisel. Take the hook tool and score a line on the plastic from right to left about 3/16 of an inch above the card. Next after you made a gouge put the edge of the chisel on the score line and hit it with a hammer. This will cause the case to crack just on that score line. You repeat this process on the back side .

Says the guy who literally had to ask the difference between Alpha and Beta Trops two pages ago. The assumption that that tropical island is a "Alpha cut" is purely wishful thinking. Correct, pre-black bordered sleeves if (typically your power) was Alpha sometimes you were better off corner shaving your deck to make the corners match. Actually people would line up the whole deck and put a heavy weight on it (or put it in a press) then just sand the whole decks corners at once.

Thanks to me screaming on usenet eventually opaque sleeves were allowed. But it was really WotCs own printing woes in Alliances and then Mirage (US mirage being really distinct) that forced them to allow opaque sleeves. You could pick out a Mirage card back from a revised or beta card quite easily and thus have a deck of Mirage lands.

Thanks! However, it says "Ice Floe" on the card (and didn't feel like showing up in any of my openers). I made sure all the lands were in English with the old skool card frame (except the Salvage, which is only in there because sometimes you just need to Dredge TWO and I couldn't find a non-English Necroplasm in time) to throw my opponents a bone in games two and three since I knew they would mostly be intoxicated and were probably not particularly pleased to be sitting across from dredge, let alone manaless dredge in funny moon languages. The only land of any real use was Maze of Ith (won me a game!), though I still think that Diamond Valley has some potential if it were to actually show up in an opening hand. Also, the correct response to a Show&Told Emrakul is to empty their hand then Dread Return Blazing Archon. Especially when you can just sit for a few turns and watch Ichorids get it on with Bridges to make lots of zombie babies until the Angel of Despair shows up to inform the Flying Spaghetti Monster of his (or her!) shortcomings. Sadly, the opportunity for tapping Island of Wak-Wak to reduce the power of a certain demon to zero failed to materialize.


Beta zombie tokens rock!
They're okay, I guess. I only threw them in there to avoid having a bunch of dead space in the bottom right corner of the picture. And I only keep them around for the rare occasions that I run out of Alpha Zombie tokens (which are mixed in with the deck for the sake of confusion). I might try to have them altered into proper zombie tokens at some point by removing the casting cost and "Scathe" (and maybe the trailing "s", though the STC flavor text stays for obvious reasons). Ideally, they should also be signed by George Romero and Bruce Campbell (I'd toss Fulci in that list as well if he weren't dead, even if that would make it even more appropriate).

This is something I can get behind. Though to be fair, this is the pimp thread and sometimes individuals who the lack proper sophistication to appreciate mtg pimp need to be forced to kneel in their filthy, uncultured ignorance. What he is really trying to say is that you should double sleeve that Lotus immediately and then gently shuffle it lovingly as you play some Vintage and sip on the adult beverage of your choice (assuming your choice of beverage is of sufficient quality for a gentleman and scholar to sip while playing Vintage, of course).
