No one around here buys booster boxes in Portuguese. They are too fucking expensive, compared to buying stuff outside the country. I blame the taxes. In the end, everyone got English foils everywhere, but only a few Portuguese foils. I don't chase them, but I still only have stumbled upon two single good foil cards in the last year from booster packs and those were a Swans of Bryn Argoll (still got it) and that RG filter land.

Japanese noughts are hard to find. Took me a while to find them. I contacted a Japanese shop that bought them for me from a japanese yahoo auction. They where a lot more expensive then english ones.

There are 15 cards and a spin-down die in this box, all with a new expansion symbol unique to this set. These dragon cards look unlike any Magic card ever printed before—they're printed on a foil stock that is twice as reflective, and treated with a varnish that gives them a very unique look. Just so we get this straight: Portuguese cards have stupid names. They are not "brazilian portuguese names". We brazilians also hate them. Apparently, Wizards of the Coast has never been able to get a decent translation team to Portuguese. Not only card names use words no one knows, but also they use ways of saying things that dont really work.

One strong example for this is Voidslime. Had it been Void Slime, we would have a reasonable translation, but it was decided to keep the single name word, so they just stuck things together in a word that sounds so ridiculous it became a running joke in Brazil.

Then there is a lot of blatant mistakes. Kill Switch, as far as I know, is not a Deadly Button or anything along that lines. Miren is not a Moaning State of Wellbeing. It even has a fricking fountain in the ilustration.

In short, portuguese cards have weird texts and mainly names, which happen to please neither Brazilians nor Portugueses.

We've got that problem in Germany, too.
Vertigo and Dizzy Spell are both translated "Schwindelanfall". Breath of Life and Touch of Vitae are both translated "Lebenshauch".

Also, in Shards of Alara, the creature type Hellion suddenly means Teufelsbraten (which is actually the more fitting translation) instead of Raupe (kinda...caterpillar), like every hellion before.

That's dumb.

Just for the record WotC never tried to use Portuguese-Brazilian translators for the cards. Even when it had a full translation team for each language (I should know, I worked in the Portuguese-Brazilian one). They only used the team for documents (judge's test, FAQs, etc).

IIRC what they FINALLY decided to do to cut back on the idiotic mistakes was have a L3 judge review the translation. They gave the job to a Brazilian judge (obviously, much bigger market) called Svaldi. Great guy, great judge, I'm sure he did - and is doing - a great job. I'm also sure he would only touch card texts.

He probably won't fix card names, flavor texts, etc. From what I heard giving him the job was a good idea. On the first set he worked they had changed translation companies and the card texts were all messed up. Even old stuff like "first strike" or something has the remainder text totally wrong.

I don't know who does the card names, or the flavor texts. What I DO know is that it's a VERY tough job. I did it for another card game and I call tell you it's very, very hard.

As for Voidslime... you might want to check out the Italian and Spanish version. And remember the translator has to follow rules for each set and card.

As for what turns into a running joke... I spent ten years hearing Portuguese players joke about "card" and "deck" not being translated in Portuguese-Brazilian. Well, it turns out it's because Brazilian law doesn't find it kosher.

Just for the record WotC never tried to use Portuguese-Brazilian translators for the cards. Even when it had a full translation team for each language (I should know, I worked in the Portuguese-Brazilian one). They only used the team for documents (judge's test, FAQs, etc).

IIRC what they FINALLY decided to do to cut back on the idiotic mistakes was have a L3 judge review the translation. They gave the job to a Brazilian judge (obviously, much bigger market) called Svaldi. Great guy, great judge, I'm sure he did - and is doing - a great job. I'm also sure he would only touch card texts.

He probably won't fix card names, flavor texts, etc. From what I heard giving him the job was a good idea. On the first set he worked they had changed translation companies and the card texts were all messed up. Even old stuff like "first strike" or something has the remainder text totally wrong.

I don't know who does the card names, or the flavor texts. What I DO know is that it's a VERY tough job. I did it for another card game and I call tell you it's very, very hard.

As for Voidslime... you might want to check out the Italian and Spanish version. And remember the translator has to follow rules for each set and card.

As for what turns into a running joke... I spent ten years hearing Portuguese players joke about "card" and "deck" not being translated in Portuguese-Brazilian. Well, it turns out it's because Brazilian law doesn't find it kosher.

How I got my job... I started writing for Mindripper, then started doing even coverage for WotC, then started writing for Star City, then started writing for Sideboard, then wrote - for free - for a PT Magic magazine... then the translation chief decided he wanted a PT guy in the PT-BR translation work...

Where's a good place to buy Japanese/Korean cards on the internet besides Ebay (I'm not a patient man...waiting a week just doesn't do if for me, and I swear if I get outbid at the last second one more time because my !@#$%&* internet is slower than the other guy's, I'm going to throw my computer at something...)? I'm looking to non-foil pimp my FT list. Maybe my 4c Landstill list as well, but I need to know:

--Are FBB or Beta duals more "pimp"?
--If FBB, which languages were they printed in and which one is most sought after?

--Is Japanese still the most expensive language? I find it to be a LOT prettier than French. Chinese I'm not fond of, but I LOVE Korean. I may do it in Korean, but I need to know what sets were/are printed in Korean. Any opinions?

I'm not doing foil because a.) the cards seem to bend due to what, temperature fluctuation? I can't deal with that, and b.) Not all the cards I want are foil, and I'm a freak that way. All or None.

All foil + duals = not possible. Therefore no foil...

For Korean cards, Ebay and Flea Markets are your only hope. I love how the language looks, but it's hard to find. The first set printed in Korean was Visions, and the last Urza's Saga, which puts Fourth Edition and Fifth Edition in Korean also. 4th Korean is BB, which mainly includes BoP and Dark Ritual. Fifth is WB. This means Korean Foil doesn't exist, and really no deck can be fully Korean. Hope that helps some.

I think that is personal.

In my oppinion, Beta is more pimp, but I know others like FBB more, esspecially when they have them all in 1 language.

For me, pimping a deck means getting all cards english foil, for cards not available in foil the oldest version of the card and Unlimited Duals.

I like them unlimited because the coloring is way better than the revised versions, and I like to be able to search fast for my duals. Making them the only white bordered cards in my deck really helps. I never had any Beta duals however, so I don't know the difference. However, I think I'd still prefer Unlimited.

In the end, pimping is building and collecting a deck in the way you like it. I want to feel good when playing a deck, I'm not playing a deck to impress my opponent. Blinding them into playmistakes is always cool, but really an urban legend.

I'd stick to a certain theme however. When going foreign, stay to 1 language. I personally hate decks which are totally asian, but have japanese, korean and chinese cards in it.

The only problem with that is that it's almost impossible. Japanese is the only asian language that's been in print since Mirage, Korean died in Saga, as did T Chinese, which is when S chinese started, I think. I like the variety of asian languages in one deck, it makes it more interesting than staring at fairly simular characters the whole time.

I like the idea about fetching duals. I do hate the lousy color job on RV, so I think I will stick with WB duals. That's awesome. Also, damn the inconsistant nature of language in the realm of M:tG. That sux. Oh well, I guess...Korean out. Japanese in. Was Weatherlight printed in Japanese then? I'm not good at remembering the order sets were released. I've got tons of cards memorized down to their flavor-texts and who the artists were, but the order is what screws me up. I need D-Days in Japanese. I know that they were printed in 6th ed., but I'd rather have WL ones. Also, was 6th ed. printed with BB in Japanese (or at all)? I can't say that I've ever even seen a 6th ed. Japanese card...Thx again.

I'll be Asianing out DDFT, and I'll put up scans when I get done. Fetches, IA Brainstorms, Ponders, and LEDs are gonna suck. Oh well, 'tis life.

They ONLY do BB for base sets when it is the first set in a particular language. (or it is Xth edition)

BB English - Alpha/Beta
BB Italian - Revised
BB French - Revised
BB German - Revised
BB Spanish - 4th
BB Portuguese - 4th
BB Japanese - 4th
BB T-Chinese - 4th
BB S-Chinese - See below
BB Korean - 4th
BB Russian - 9th

Very sadly, BB S-Chinese was neglected, it would have been 5th Edition.

Wizards has lots of blunders in the language section.
For whatever reason, FE was only English, it should have Italian, too.
They skipped their ritual of a BB set for S-Chi 5th.
Korean was practically "sprinkled" around on the set list.
PO2 had no Chinese, but PO1 and P3K did, and then Starter dropped foreign languages all together.
Coldsnap was inexplicably skipped in Russian, and the Special Theme Decks weren't printed in Chinese.

Two sets in magic have 10 languages (5th and Saga)
This is really annoying for people who collect all of a certain card that happens to be in one of those sets. (9-pocket binders)

I would assume that most players prefer Beta. What I like about GermanBB duals is that the print quality seems to be better and that the details in the artworks seem to be a little more visible. Also, I think that the Drew Tucker art for Plateau looks better.

Good deal? Yes, right now I'd count $40 each on Rolling Earthquakes of any language as a good price.
But as a guess to the Asian vs. English values ...

English P3K is certainly more valuable than Asian P3K.

Two reasons:

1. Production quantities. English P3K is in much shorter supply than its Asian breed.
P3K goes (most scarce to least scarce) ... English, T-Chinese, Japanese, S-Chinese ... at least to my knowledge.

2. Readability. More than half the people you run into have no knowledge of what any of the P3K stuff is.
Er go, it is easiest to have a copy they can just read.

So long story short there are few mint or NM Beta cards out there, so they have held their value. Also, Alpha Volcanic Islands don't exist, so Beta Volcanics are the only option for English BB.

Well from a collectors standpoint, Mint Alpha cards are actually harder to come by than Beta because of the quality control, which a lot worse in Alpha than Beta. This leads to there being very few of some Alpha cards PSA 9-10 out there, as a result of poor centering and other poor printing qualities from the original print run.

Taped off with an eraser. I had bad luck with acetone. Try a few different erasers, some work much better than others. The one I ended up using was a 2 color one that was half grey and half white, only the gray side worked well. I'd tell you the brand, but It rubbed off a while ago.

I have a foil affinity deck, but no camera.

Your first inclination is right - the curling is a PITA. Never again will I covet foils after seeing what's happened to my foil Affinity deck over time.

Regarding curling foils: Just use KMC perfect fit sleeves. I bought them last year to sleeve up my vintage deck which was becoming worth a bit of cash, and I noticed the sleeves prevented foils from curving.

Also regarding curling foils:

Don't use Dragon Sleeves. Plain and Simple.


I only use foils (or Beta's if they're an option.. sigh) and I've never had a foil curl. Ever. I don't use Dragon Shields because everyone I know that's used them has incurred the infamous curling.

Just use matte finish Ultra Pro's that come in the toploading cardboard box with a dragon on it. Your cards will thank you.

FWIW I also leave my cards in the car all the time and I live in Texas... heat has nothing to do with curl either, humidity might, but it's fairly humid here and like I said, I've never had a problem with it.

Regarding Perfect Fits-- How on earth are you using those? I sleeved one of my decks in the perfect fits and then regular KMC sleeves and my deck looked like it should be running 4x Battle of Wits! I couldn't shuffle at all because the sleeves were clumping. I just couldn't get em to work... and I even read the instructions!!!!

Weird, since I use the same Ultra Pro's as you.

I think you have to press the air out of them. You sleeve up your deck and just push down on the stack. Sometimes people ask me if my deck is more than 60 cards, but not too often. It's less than 1 cm taller than a normal deck.

That is exactly what I use. As mentioned, just compress the deck and air will come out. Over a few weeks the deck should drop down to like 15% bigger than one without em.

FWIW I also leave my cards in the car all the time and I live in Texas... heat has nothing to do with curl either, humidity might, but it's fairly humid here and like I said, I've never had a problem with it.

What? According to my knowledge, heat and moisture indeed have an effect on the curl as the foil-layer reacts to heat by expanding (well, nearly every solid matter does). But when it cools down, it shrinks which will intensify the mentioned curl effect.

Same is true for the moisture which slowly softens the cardboard. It will then deform irreversibly, thus you have a card which is curved forever.

Well, my UGW Threshold is still the same, except that my jap Coldsnap Brainstorms got watered down to jap Mercadian Masques and I now have fbb duals. I will post a pic tomorrow since I don't have time for it now. And this thread srsly needs more pictures instead of talking about crap decks.

I know what you're saying, but from my experience, I have left my cards in the car for days at a time @ 100+ degree heat, and my foils are still perfectly flat.

I would love to post more pics, but there aren't any legacy decks that are doing anything for me right now, so I haven't been inspired to build anything new. I've got my T2 Reveillark deck completely foiled and my T2 5C Merfolk completely foiled though. I'm about 5-6 cards off of foiling Tezzerator in Extended.

I don't remember. I think I payed 30 Euro for the Delta-upgrade and 20 for the upgrade of the Strands.

And that Island is Alpha. I have P3K Islands (white-boardered, 1 S-chin, 2 T-chin, 1 jap) and some foil Odyssey Islands (t-chinese), but I foudn the Alpha Island prettier.

probably, but there are still a lot of people who are too stupid to distinguish between japanese and chinese, that's why I don't care about the mix as long as the playsets are uniform.

I also don't see why I should down-grade the Mongeese to japanese, especially because I stood 1 hour in the queue to let them sign by Terese Nielsen. And well, I payed 8 Dollar for that playset of Goyfs. It would be ridiculous if the upgrade would cost me more than I payed for the playset itself. ;-)
