...I've decided to take pictures of my extremely excellent EDH deck (although it isn't fully pimp-ified, 'cause Germans are lazy)(I know, right?).

Anyway, I can't get a picture without ridiculous amounts of glare.

Like, attrocious amounts. Can anybody give me some help on how to not suck at cameras?

It's still not really complete, but I've got the remaining cards incoming. (That is, if I still recieve them, it's been 1,5 week now and for domestic in Holland that's a long time). The two cards I still need are Foil Delta and Foil Wasteland, that's it. I know, the Foil Mire is asian, but that's going to be traded for an english one after this weekend.

So, here goes :) Because I can only post 11 pictures and Teneb, my general would be the 12th, I'll leave that away, already posted it in the altered art thread.

I play Ambition's Cost from P3K on purpose, I'm still not a big fan of the new layout. So I'd rather play a white boardered P3K card than a BB new layout foil. Also, to me P3K is pimp, somehow it's just cool, that's why I play Overwhelming Forces over Decree of Pain.

Concerning duals, as you can see I don't play foreign languages (for me english is foreign already :P), never really liked it. So FBB duals are no go, and beta duals are way to expensive, that's just not worth it to me.

Just kills me that I still don't have the remaining two cards though :S Really hope that the dude didn't just accepted my money and never sent, was a 175 euro deal...

All cards printed are legal in the format they are allowed in regardless of language they would be under no obligation to show you an English one, the best you could do would be to ask a judge for a translation of the card. During a current tournament I went to a person had a deck full of Russian cards, a few people complained but there is nothing in the rules prohibiting it that I could find. What would you do if you ever went to a major pro tour and played against players from other countries.

I always wondered about that since you could feasibly get paired up against a person who didn't speak English much and had a deck full of cards that weren't highly played and have to translate most of them. That would be one pain in the arse to the judges.

Kind of like my wife isn't American and her English isn't the greatest. Since she does happen to know Russian at least better than English she plays decks full of Russian cards that are kinda crappy so not many people are going to know what half the cards are since it's not highly played stuff.

Most of Terese Nielsen's signatures are at the bottom of the card, really loopy and vertically oriented, I've seen them on multiple forces of will and a couple natural orders. However, I've recently seen a couple of her cards that are signed in the middle of the card, between the picture and text. They are a little more jagged and slightly right oriented. Has anyone else seen these? Are they authentic? I'm guessing maybe it's an older signature before she got really big, because all of her new force of will alterations are signed at the bottom and are really loopy.

Sorry, I don't know why the Infernals came out so large. They're the same width as the image below. As for the S-Chinese cards, I couldn't stand having 3 japanese foil Infernals and a non-foil jap. Foil S-Chinese > Jap in my eyes. For the Duress, I traded for it. They'll both be Japanese foil eventually.

I think that's just because a lot of players like a card to be in a foreign language, and not their own. That's where we dutch people are lucky, thank god there a no dutch cards ^^

German is a bastard language its mixed with other base languages from the northern Europe areas it doesn't have one clear ancestor but many it does draw some from the Romantic Language Base but not a lot.

I like my portuguese cards. They are insanely hard to find (especially in NM Condition), but they are not considered pimp. I'll still take them over squiggly any day of the week tho.

Okay people, here's the deal. English is a language of the Germanic family. Vikings invaded and influenced the Anglo-Saxons. When the Normans conquered England around the 11th century, royal business and such was conducted in French and spellings were somewhat standardized. Modern English borrows a ton of words from Latin and Greek. Romanian is actually the modern language closest to Latin. Greek is it's own independent branch of Indo-European and has nothing to do with Romantic languages. The Latin alphabet descends from a western Greek alphabet called Cumaean. The end.

Secondly, Portuguese is my primary pimp language. The cards are hard to find and I enjoy the way the language sounds.

Now I am curious, too, I only have seen some testprint foils at the SPIEL 07 in Essen, but those were textless (the card I have seen were Gaea's Cradle, Dures, Pygmy Hippo and I think Stroke of Genius).

The all had a empty textbox and no cardname, just the picture and the card type.

When Wizards decided to start making foil cards, they made a bunch of test prints to test the process. Some were lighter than others, some were darker. Often they have a letter in marker on the back denoting which variant they are. They printed one card of each color/type.

All were from the current set, Exodus, except Pygmy Hippo was from Visions, because they didn't have any gold cards in Exodus. I have no clue how or why they chose these particular cards. Wizards gave a lot of them out to people to play with to see how they would wear and play, so most of them do have some light edge wear. They generally don't scan or photograph well because they're so absurdly shiny and silvery.

The test foils don't show up too often, but they do surface every now and then, usually in groups. Prices range from $300-600 for the bad ones to up to $1000+ for the good ones. In past years they went much higher; I do recall a major collector buying a set of 16 for $16000.

Hi everyone! Just found this thread, awesome pimps you guys have!

My goal is to pimp my merfolk deck to german, becasue I think that is the coolest :)

I have already gotten myself 4 Force of Will, 4 Brainstorm (Gedankenwirbel, although I don't play them :P), 4 Daze.

All the merfolks are english foil right now but I consider both Beta Lords and or german/german foil although it looks really hard to come bye.

If anyone has alot of german cards for trade/sell I'm very intressted, I have 8 japanse (the blue ones ofc) fetches that I would like german any some other pimped cards.

As mentioned, they are test prints from Judgment and 8e respectively. Wizards uses test prints to test borders, colouring, foiling processes, location of P/T box, whether casting cost is on left or right etc. The prices for various test prints varies from set to set, as well as demand and playability. Most people would have seen the foil exodus test prints (sotf/CoT etc) as well as the US prints (textless cradle/duress/stroke etc).

Arabian Nights one, always. As far as Serendibs go, summer > AN > everything else. I'll post a pic of a summer efreet if I manage to pick one up later this year.

@KillemallCFH: They're UD test prints, much like we have textless cradles, strokes, quarries etc for saga test prints. Every single UD card has a textless version, but the quantity available is lower than saga. There are foil textless masticores, bargains and rectors running around out there.

The dirt you can see comes from the perfect sized sleeves, every card there is in fact Mint. The islands are signed by Kenji Tsumura, and the catbus token is drawn by Daren Bader on an Artist Proof Cultural exchange. I use it to separate MD/SB in my deckbox :D

I was in our local store today and asked about foreign cards. the owner keeps a box of them stashed away since he doesn't care for them and doesn't know how to tell the pictures or how to price something like that. Occasionally I find something good. He only takes them in if it's on a trade deal for a collection so you never know what's in the box. Well, today I hit some simple gems.

Always good to hear, my friend. The libraries people are excellent and great traders to boot, plus some of the most knowledgeable on various misprints. The juggernauts were from there, as well as quite a few other test prints/misprints.

They're test prints, created by Wizards to test various card details, as I have mentioned before. The bop is a Judgment test (another exists with an opposite frame) while the island is a 8e print. I have no idea why they used parallax tide's picture, though, but it looks pretty good that way. Test prints are from various sets, of differing rarity and price. For example, only 1-2 copies exist of certain 5th dawn prints, hence the price is much higher. There are only 2 of each 8e print as well -- the other island print was sold on eBay for 1k, while I got mine for slightly less. Exodus foil test prints are worth a bit less than equivalent prints from other sets due to availability -- a foil silver bordered city of traitors would be worth about a third of a 8e painland, for instance. There's a lot else to say, so if anyone is interested, just ask or we can talk on PM.

Well, some foreign stores that I have been to sell foreign stuff at normal prices, but an Italian Mana Vault for $75, even for a local store selling foreign stuff, is quite high.

That does help. He knows what the Exploration was worth alone. Those were just the more interesting of the bunch. The rest are all playables also. Russian Makeshift Mannekins are hilarious.

As shitty of a reply as this is, it actually brings up an interesting point. For the most part I've acquired the cards in that deck because I find them pleasing to my eye, not because of what you or 'friendz' may think. You reference me not appreciating special or distinguishing qualities, but I've been playing since revised and have seen lots of 'cool' cards, and through that time I've learned that 'pimping' a deck is a subjective experience in which someone finds what looks best to them while adhering to budget prerequisites.

I like signed cards, plain and simple. I like how they look. I got the fetches signed in person and had to wait four months to get those forces back from Nielsen because that's what I like. I have the original arena counterspells instead of foils or beta because that's what I like. However, my duals are foreign instead of beta because I cannot currently afford a manabase of many thousands of dollars.

It's just interesting that from your point of view I have somehow failed at what I set out to do. How shall I make my deck more unique? Should I find all artist proofs and not be able to play in sanctioned tournaments? For such a high and mighty post it is glaringly lacking in any subject matter, that is, you didn't actually say anything. Instead you attempted to assert some kind of dominance over the internet, which is a sad undertaking in and of itself.

Anway, this is a small sample of my stuff. I know it isn't the coolest but I think its pretty cool. If you don't like it you didn't have to post anything. Why don't you troll somewhere else?

Well, a large part of the reason would be for some people, the incremental value of signed cards is sentimental. The same applies to altered cards as well, but the latter translates better to general value. Of course, another problem is that a lot of signatures are quite easily forged. Brian Snoddy, Mark Tedin, Mark Poole, Christopher Rush etc all have pretty easy signatures. I once dealt with a summer tundra that had a forged signature, and examples like this are why I never get high end cards signed. The last major reason is that with artists attending events and being easily contactable, there is a large influx of signed cards in any case.

Of course, there ARE examples of signed high-end cards bringing a large premium. An example (exception rather than norm) is the PSA 10 BB signed lotus, which will go for a large premium if ever sold simply because it shouldn't be possible to get PSA 10.

I won't pay more for a signature, but I do enjoy foil cards that are signed. For whatever reason they catch my eye even more than a regular foil.

It was a prank spread by Duellist, iirc, although I can't be 100% sure if there was any substance in it at all. There was supposed to be a printing of "islands" in AN, and I'm guessing the AN island is simply an alteration done to reflect that.

I believe it was the other way around, there wasn't supposed to be a mountain but the print run had one anyways. Arabian Nights is one of THE most pimp basic lands in my opinion.

The story behind the islands in greater detail was that in an article from 1996, it was mentioned that the first 2% of AN printings contained all 5 basics, and that "island" would be banned due to blue's overpowering nature. Which made sense, seeing as it was obviously the best colour in A/B/U. The joke was then on how the spoof card, "islands", emphasis on plurality, would dodge the banning due to the extra letter.

The inclusion of the mountain was a mistake on WOTC's part, though.

Btw Yawg, I've seen your version of the islands. Still doing them?

Edit: I have a choice of purchases that I would like some input on. Would you guys pick a foil sotf (black bordered, gold symbol) or a foil test EE (white backed) if the EE costs 60% more but is the only known test EE in existence? I am aiming for a playset of the former, but I may never get a chance at the latter again if I pass it up.

Nice to see you posting here. I remember playing against that deck a few times at Game Empire when I lived in San Diego.

Since moving to europe however, I've been picking up tons of german cards on the cheap. 10 cents each for these guys:

If that was my Meathooks deck, I would totally only be running 3 Plated Sliver. It'd bother me way too much. And it wouldn't be the first time I altered a card choice based on a lack of foil, and there's absolutely no shame in that.

SRY. Didnt have 4th vial when i needed to take that pic. So that plated was there to get 60 cards in picture. Now its -1 plated + 1 vial

Very pimp meathooks deck. Are those mutavaults foil? I can't tell. Those foil daze's just gave me wood.
