I also do not own a black light so I can't do that test. I showed some of my friends and some say it looks real, others say it looks a bit off. But from what I have read the printing of older cards was variable.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, ever since the prices went absurd, I wouldn't buy a thing from ebay. I'm also extremely unsure about all those pristine ultra fresh never played booster to sleeve high end beta cards. Where they were for the last twenty years, hm...?

Thank you very much everyone for the advice. I will be purchasing this little uv flashlight from amazon after work today. If I remember correctly if it is real it will glow correct? If it is fake it will not glow.

Correct. I haven't seen a fake passing the UV test yet.

There's also my test that is used in conjunction with the other tests: the smell test. Does it smell like new ink/glue and paper, or old cardboard/cigarettes/etc.

If you put the new fakes in a pile of 60 new real cards and look at the edges they also don't look the same, but I don't think beta bayou was in the latest china fakes. Revised bayou absolutely is (along with all the others). It could be an older fake (the laser prints from 8-10 years ago), or a well done reback (unlikely if it passed bend test).

Probably on aesthetic or novelty grounds. I don't like the look of Cyrillic, which is why I don't like Russian cards. It's not inconceivable that demand for the Phyrexian one is larger relative to the supply than it is for the Russian one.

Kanji to match my Japanese tattoo's. But i must say i am very happy with Japanese cards. They come close, look sharp and artistic, don't cost a fortune non foil and when signed they are beautiful. While Korean also has something i find cool, the rest of the languages (including Russian) are butt ugly to me. No offense to people running hot to foil Russians. English is pratical. Some cards are readers and it would take to much time for judge calls so i found that altering English versions is a good solution. But just few alterers among them are true artists. The rest of alters are mostly shit. But ofcourse, Pimp in the eyes of the beholder.

While the Fastbond is really top notch and the 3 Sol Rings are not bad either I feel like the attitude towards alters changed so drastically that in that progress they became mass produced goods. 2-3 years ago people (outside out Italy and Spain) would rarely touch that kind of stuff and now they are everywhere and close to everything is available for money on ebay, mcm or directly at the artists. The attitude towards signatures changed in a similar way - with similar results. Even leaving out all the negative stuff like fake signatures or alters I still feel very strange about that kind of [once rather personal] stuff being available in bulk for mere money. Once again it is solely about those funky green pieces of paper.

Regarding the non foil russian Goyf ... non foil cards in moonrune languages are among the biggest traps I have ever dealt with - decently rare, completely overpriced while the demand is super small. I hope none of you buys that kind of stuff with the intention of ever flipping it. In that case they would usually stick to you like dogshit to your shoe.

PS. At least you can read Russian like a western language if you spend the one or two hours to learn basic Cyrillic while the other funky looking moonrunes are at best aesthetically appealing.

Never thought I could contribute here, long time lurker. I don't really feel like anyone would be interested in my RUG Delver in Legacy, with only Revised duals...

Anyway, story time! I caught wind of a guy selling a starter deck of Alpha through someone else in my local game group. I pretty cheaply acquired a starter deck box of Alpha (rulebook included), and a few more cards to bring the total slightly above the 60 advertised on the box. I'm Irish so opportunities like these are extremely rare. My particular city actually had a high street store selling Summer Magic in '94, but unfortunately I was too young to take advantage. A high level judge friend still tells the story of how he sold his Blue Hurricane for pittance.

To the pics - what's really amazing is the pack fresh Alpha mintyness from about 90% of the cards. I was on the lookout for some Beta basic Islands already, I guess I'll have to settle for the 20 or so basics that came in this box :laugh:

A year ago I played at a nice sized Legacy event hosted by Jupiter and after dropping I traded in some stuff for cards I needed including a set of Natural Order including one of those Darks. I asked if it was worth more than the $8 they were offering since I had heard they were quite rare. Buyer lied straight to my face and we did the deal. A week later Insaw it for sale for $175. I no longer do business with Jupiter.

i don't deal with dealers ever anymore for a similar reason. I don't play very often so i can't eep up with prices of everything I have. I sold a bunch of stuff to a dealer maybe ~200 worth and I also bought a mana drain from him, worth like $125 at the time. Something happened with another buyer and he got distracted and forgot to subtract the cost of the drain or added the total wrong because when i counted my cash later was ~120 over what I expected. Later I came to find out that several of the cards I sold him were significantly more valuable than he led on. Because of his error it probably came out a wash but I don't ever get that lucky so i haven't dealt with dealers since.

Thanks guys. Brief background: I've had the Scrubland for 6 years before acquiring the lotus. It appears though both were signed at the same point in time. Both cards are real.


FYI. Here's a simple magnification/loupe test you can do to detect fake cards aside from the light tests:

There should be dithering inside the space for mana costs instead of the usual rosette pattern. The text and borders should be clear and solid. (This is true for cards from Alpha/Beta/Unlimited.)

Apart from the very nice art in the actual painting, it looks like an elementary schooler is responsible for it.

It was EXACTLY like that! I contacted jD through mail and he asked me if I preferred to have the cards signed with his whole name or just jD. I thought "if the cards are credited to jD, jD will be". Then, weeks later, I've received these. The rest is history :frown:

Death Wish is actually "Todeswunsch". The reason it is not spelled "Todes Wunsch" like the the other wishes, is that "Todeswunsch" is a real word in German, whereas "Listiger", "Brennender", "Lebender" and "Goldener" are just adjectives.

"Todespresse" is Black Vise. Oh, and the plural of "Wunsch" is "Wünsche" :wink:

'Pulverfaß' is not correct anymore. Nowadays it has to be 'Pulverfass'. 'ß' is just a stronger 's' but is never used as the first letter anywhere, thus there is no capitalized version. It is a ligature derived from 'sz'. Our 'ß' sounds the english 's' where our 's' sounds more like your 'z'. Still, in the new spelling, 'ß' is only used if the vowel before is stressed which is not the case for 'Pulverfass'.

Death Wish is the only wish which has a noun as the first word. If it was 'Deadly Wish' it would be two words in german as well.
