Necropotence circa 1996. Still need to make a sideboard for it. I could have either made the deck with grimey played revised cards and thrown them in an Ice Age starter deck so it looked period and then played the deck without sleeves(which is what I did) or tracked down beautiful beta and antiquities copies of everything and played the deck in sleeves which I did not do.

Next to work on turbo stasis.

I kind of can't believe there are people who haven't seen the Indiana Jones series.

Our kids went through a phase where that was literally all they watched. Our youngest invented new names for them:

Raiders of the Lost Ark = "Jones Ball"
Temple of Doom = "Jones Hat"
Last Crusade = "Jones Dad"

These were based on what the covers looked like to him. They would also call Temple of Doom "the kid one" because they really identified with Shorty.

Gorgeous decks - Cabal Therapy really is pretty in the old foil; those tokens are really cool too (the Voss ones, I have mixed feelings about Feyris as a character).


For me the new full art frame is just too busy to replace any of the original fetches/shocks. They're pretty novel in their own right, but stand out a little too much for my taste.

It's mostly a marketing move to sell a HELLUVA number of boxes. This is gonna be crazy.
Personnaly, I'm gonna buy 1 or 2 boxes, but mostly to get a lot of lands to alter. If I get a expedition land I'll be super happy, but it's not a priority. But hey, most zen fetches are <30bucks, so I don't think it's too high, compared when sclading tarn was 80+ bucks.

Truly obvious attempt by Wizards to distract people from the fact that they won't actually be getting (what modern needs) a reprinting of fetchlands. Seems to be working pretty good so far.

Comments like this are so out of touch. Wizards probably should have reprinted the ZEN fetches in MM2. They won't be reprinted in a Standard set until they find a Standard environment that needs them. It's possible they'll come in Oath of the Gatewatch, with only 3 months of 10 fetch Standard, or they'll come in 6 months in the post-rotation large set when Khans rotates out. This makes more sense I think because it guarantees that there will be fetches in Standard for the entire BFZ block, to pair with landfall as well as the new slowlands.

It's actually an obvious attempt by Wizards to appease people who are clamoring for them, without hurting the Standard environment that they're trying to create. Yeah it "sells packs" but fuck players eat this shit up like crack, so of course we want it. Why are we getting mad at Wizards for trying something new? It's unfortunate that it's in the set with the goofy hedrons, but other than that it's a good move by them all-around.

I like the new borders, except the hologram looks goofy and the font change is lame. There's actually more room for art on the new cards. The text does kinda kill the Expedition lands though. They'd be so much nicer without the big white block of text on them.

Echoing this. I play KTK Strands in my Japanese Miracles deck because I like the art better. I mean, WTF is in the ONS one? Some grass and a little bit of a puddle? My idea of pimp also takes into account the scarcity or hard-to-find nature of the card. For example, I play a $75 Pyroclasm because that shit took months to source from Europe, and I play Coldsnap STPs because FBB are a dime a dozen. To me, pimping is as much about the troubles one has to go through to find a version of a card as it is about the price of the card. When they banned Birthing Pod in neo-extended, I could have sold all of my Japanese cards to further fund my Legacy collection, but the time and effort I spent gathering the Japanese versions of the cards in that deck were worth more to me than the money I could have recouped if I cashed out.

I actually sort of contend this, because first, COP: Black actually was never printed in Alpha.

I love the idea. This brings me back to the time I began to play competitive, and I have fond memories losing to armageddon with my stasis deck. As a teen, I had not enough money to afford for the necros, which costed 50 french francs then (let alone Jester cap which have even more expensive)... I hope that a scene appears for this format, just like it happened for 93-94, with the same casual spirit but without the associated elitism (after all, who cares if your lands are not betas...). This "95" format would allow playing among the most iconic cards in the history of magic, without all the brokenness that followed. I think a generation in Europe began to play in this format.

Btw, are you going for a full-period experience? In your place I'd allow the APO enemy painlands so that the cycle is full and so that you'll got all the color combination properly covered. But then again if your concern is to be as true to the era as possible, there's no need for that.
Also, you really need Erhnam-and-Burn-em. With Howling Mines preferably, as that card was a source of my main pleasure back in times when everybody and their mother played Necro.

although the majority prefers original printing foils such as with cabal therapy / buried alive, other don't like them and prefer the new foiling process available on the newer printings. Exhume / animate dead are only available as grave born foils, and reanimate's alternate foil has the FNM on it... Judging from the foil gitaxian probes, dark depths, judge promo dark rituals, original pithing needles, elesh norn's, and iona, there has clearly been some effort and money put into the list. Your response is not justified by his personal choices and how they differ from what you would have done.

The only card that I considered replacing with something different were the Graveborn reanimates with the FNMs but other than the 3 letters and an icon change the cards look identical. :) Also, I completely agree with your comment about the new foiling process. Here's my current Burn list. Needs a little bit of improving with the mana base and the SDT, but it's pretty close. I prefer the new art to Bloodstained Mire and Wooded Foothills, and Arid Mesas look pretty nice in foil. The potato camera I have doesn't really do them justice.

Really dig the 1996 Arena League promo Island. It's not all that rare nor expensive, but you don't see a lot of folks rocking them.

I use the Ice Age arena foils for Vintage. They're foil, not a million dollars, they look nice and they remind me of when I started playing Magic. Non-vintage get the 4th ed Korean treatment.

Do you have any knowledge of the story behind those pieces? The front appears to be Revised and the back appears to be Revised printed over a weak Antiquities printing. Are the cards on the back printed 'upside down' in relation to the front? It is hard to tell because your images show half in the same orientation and half upside down. Were they printing Antiquities at the same time they were printing Revised? Why are the corners squared instead of rounded?

They are truly one-of-a-kind cards! :eek:

It's on the libraries, under the test print section. Just to summarise:

- These were cut from sheets acquired from a CM employee. They were never supposed to get out.
- Two sheets got out, I've posted some from the other sheet, but this sheet is in pretty good condition, the other was glued back to back with another sheet and wasn't in the best of shape. Not all cards exist from that sheet too, so most of these are legitimately unique.
- They are inverted. I just didn't save the pictures as such. The mirror pic of the birds above is pretty accurate.
- Would guess that it's an AQ sheet printed over a UL sheet on the back, hence the weak printing.
- The only sheets are rare sheets. They are all rare front/common back/AQ.

I can't recall what all the nice combinations are, but the Recall has a basic island back, and is pretty nice.

Nope, they are all inverted, I just didn't manually invert all my pictures. The only difference in the sheets, outside of the condition, is that the ones I am posting now are from a square-cut batch. The other sheet is round-cornered but in bad condition.

The lotus and workshop are probably in name-your-price territory due to the inelastic supply. Considering the silly prices on power right now, lotus will definitely be 10+k, but not sure what the ceiling is. Depends on demand.

Oh, I know the guy who had the sheet, so when these became available I hunted the ones I thought are best-in-class and the island for collection. The other pieces I will pick up along the way as they become available.

Just to clarify, you're looking for Korean 5th and not the Brainstorm with the V symbol, right? The only language with the set symbol for 5th edition is Simplified Chinese. S-Chinese 5th Brainstorms are even more ridiculously hard to find (and therefore is my Vintage Brainstorm :tongue:)

I support wizards attempts to thwart counterfeiting but the card front has been RUINED imo with the holothingy. Hopefully in future they will be able to find a way to do away with this monstrosity. I find their promotional products predictable and unpleasant. Best avoid.

when I bought them like 2 years ago there were at least 4 sets of them on MKM.. in contrast to jap Infernals which were hard to find at the time and there was 30+ few months later... I mean the cards will pop up eventually just look for them and ask some traders, the high end group is a good start

4 Condition. Every one of these opened in NZ was damaged with edge wear. Wizards are talking about replacing them but there will be a lot of copies out there that are MP.
5 Rarity. This is the big one - just how many of these things are there going to be. The jury is still out but there seems to be more opened than the previous time they did this sort of thing at Zendikar. As cards are reprinted rarity has to be determined based on each item but if you want a truly rare card there are far better options than these (Jap foil/Russian foil for example).

I won't be getting any and I wouldn't recommend someone using them if they wanted to pimp their deck.

Good idea, I ripped the pineapple juice from a new Zendikar booster. Apparently Wizards new promo - randomly inserted mythic drinks.

I'm not a fan too much either. Most of the art for them is terrible and I agree with the foiling too.

How much do you guys actually like the look of the new fetchlands?

Kinda ambivalent myself.

There are some definite negatives.

-The M15 card frame, the "Beleren" font, and the holofoil stamp look like shit.
-They aren't truly full art; the text box really intudes upon the artwork.
-The art is often Zendikar specific (i.e. hedrons all up in this shit) and that can be a turn off.
-They're only in foil, which is a turn-off to those that like more subdued (and tourney-friendly) pimp.

But there are a few positives.

-The allied fetches are done by Veronique Meignaud and are beautiful. I like Alexander's and Anthony S. Water's artwork a lot, but her work can, at the least, give them a run for their money. No real opinion on the shocks and enemy fetches.
-I like the hedron-rune borders. One of my biggest complaints about the Eighth Edition frames are that many of the card borders became a lot less stylized, more bland, and didn't have a lot of richness and detail...especially compared to the classic frames. The expedition borders, like the Planar Chaos, Future Sight, and Innistrad flip borders, are generally improvements on the 8th-forward card borders (but still not as good as the classics).

More photoshop effect vomit, and an additional border to make a deck look like a mess, and new, and only english, and foil, and hedrons. Wow. These are for children playing modern to impress their younger children standard counterparts.

I fear this is the new normal. The cards in general (including normal foils/non foils) from the BFZ boxes I've cracked are glossy the same way that MM2 was, but not as bad with quality wise.

As for looks, the blue fetches are alright, especially compared to the other available arts (You can't tell me the Onslaught Flooded Strand/Polluted Delta art is actually good and not bland as hell, and KTK isn't that much better). I especially love Polluted Delta. However, the english only part is going to make me sell mine off. But for people that go with english foils, I can't really critcize them if they go with Expeditions.
