Isn't an Unlimited Winter Orb around 10x more expensive than Revised? There is no comparison with the duals. You can usually find an Unlimited dual for about 1.5x the price. Maybe this is the wrong thread but wanted to follow up.

I would never buy any offcenter NFCs from him. I do fancy myself a set of textless Bolts one day and if the only stock was those opened from packs then they would be really, really tough to find.

But the deliberate miscutting of sheets just to sell them at a premium is absolute trash.

I jumped on 2 MM Foil Sword Fire/Ice and Foil Vendilion Clique from him on ebay and was super excited. This was about a year ago and i didnt know about the nfc stuff, disappointing overall :(

I have no problems with NFCs. To be fair, I'm also not a miscut / misprint guy so it's not a big deal to me if it's nfc or "found in the wild" - they're all just essentially like alters to me.

As long sellers are up front about it, it doesn't bother me.

I'm referring to the half-of-another-card-is-showing NFCs, not the special ones regular NFCs like textless Bolt and textless Cradle, etc. Those ones are okay. But just because he can acquire a foil sheet of Origins Mythics and cut them so that it's a "Heretical Healer :1::b::b: Jace, Vr" doesn't make it okay for him to charge $200 for it. And the people actually paying that price for them are part of the problem because they are just encouraging him.

As Stan pointed out, MTG cards are hardly live-giving necessities. Do you similarly think all the sellers who sell Beta duals at high prices are unethical?

Prices on cards are what they are because of what people are willing to buy them at. It's as simple as that.

I particularly do like the Kassis NFCs because they are actually rare if you think about it. How many German foil miscut ZEN fetches do you think exist in the world? How much do you think people would be willing to pay to own say one of 2 existing heavily miscut German foil Misty Rainforests?

I am ok with that, but I think it should have its own thread. I always saw this thread as somewhere for people to show off. Come here, see things that make me jealous. But when I come in here I almost never see that.

While I understand that these discussions are linked, to me (personally) it's not the same. If I ask peoples option's on what I should get to pimp a deck that's fine, but having a two or three page discussion on something in here probably should have its own topic. So that way those who want to show off their hard work are not drowned out by whatever is the topic of the moment.

Does that make sense? I am open to ideas.

Factory cut are, due to their scarcity, harder to come by. NFC's is easier, due to the amount of sheets being sold and cut the last few years.

What cards are you interested in? Brainstorms, forces etc. are close to impossible to find within a reasonable budget.

As a big miscut player myself, seeing NFC's like the ones Eli trots out feel on the same level as running FTV foils. They can be cool at times given their extreme cuts, but they aren't authentic. The entire allure of miscuts is in the nature of how it is an accidental process because they offer something completely unique. That's the ultimate in pimp factor; having something that is better than the original, and with miscuts there isn't really an equal due to how scarce they are and how diverse they are. Yet when someone purposefully does this, it completely takes away the point of why they are attractive in the first place.

So that said, factory cut or bust. I would never run a NFC card if I am going for a true pimp factor, because it simply isn't pimp to make your own damn "pimp" cards. Next we might as well see someone peel the foil off a card and then iron it onto a non-foil and call it a day. As for where to find them, your best bet these days is scouring Ebay, maybe the high end Facebook group, or become friends with Ben Carp (Gunslinga). Otherwise, Starcity does have theirs listed and for a long time had tons of them, but their well has mostly dried up. But in general you have to be very patient when finding them as it is an incredibly slow and painful process, especially if you are trying to build a playset, and expect to pay out the ass if you want things like Brainstorms and Forces.

You can usually tell from an imperfection in the cut. Either a corner isn't rounded particularly well or you can see a starting/ending mark. I purchased a FtV Goblin Lackey before I knew NFC was a thing. A month or two later someone asked if they could look at it out of the sleeve/perfect fit and showed me an imperfection at the bottom edge that was caused during the cutting process. Now I hate the thing. :mad:

Another sign of NFC vs Factory Miscut is the severity of the miscut. I have a Saga Lackey that is shifted so there is no black border on the right side (and a double thick border on the left side). Most NFC you see will show pieces of 4 cards but still be conveniently positioned so that the intended card is legal for play based on what it is required to show.

I haven't seen any myself but it is possible given there are numerous miscuts floating around in similar releases, most notably the Duel Decks series.

I believe many that are found between Fallen Empires-Urza block are legitimate, as printing was far less consistent and sheets less likely to be obtained and forcefully miscut given there wasn't much of a market for things like this at the time. Obviously later sets can be like this too, but the most I have come across that are legit are between 94-98. In general newer miscuts (unless relatively minor and clearly factory cut) are taken with skepticism as sheets are easily available these days and can be cut, but most of the time sellers acknowledge the cards are NFC. I know there were foil Origins and foil Modern Masters sheets cut like this fairly recently and are littered all over the place online. It's a rather lame way for people trying to profit tbh.

The Miscut/missprint group on facebook is a pretty good starting place.

Otherwise there's a NFC group also, where you could certainly ask for specific cards.
I think you want to decide how and what you are after. There's a huge differecence between NFC, which is very often cut in very funky ways, like tilted to the side, showing 4 cards, and factory cut, which often shows a small part of another card somewhere on the border. The cards doesnm't look super good next to each other.

Sadly no. I am going card by card, grabbing what I can. I have found that when I want to build a deck I go at breakneck speed, but when I am just switching cards over I take my time. I have been playing with mismatched Mazes for months.

Well, it took longer than 2 weeks (through no fault of my own, thanks USPS), but finally have my second Legacy deck complete. SB is a work in progress (it's also missing 1 card because I don't know what I want in that slot yet), but I've told myself I won't have like $700 in spares like I do for Miracles. Hopefully I can stay true to that. Apologies for dirty sleeves. Also, I don't care enough about pimping this deck to spend money on pimping its singleton Forest. Though, I might go and find a Euro or APAC forest (leaning towards the one with the Torii in the trees.

As for the sword, I like the new art style more TBH, and Sword of War and Peace doesn't have a Judge foil like that. (The art style is still different between the Judge Feast and Famine and the others as well)

Here's Klug's closest version of a AB-style alter but it's not a modern –> AB border. I want you to take notice of the extension of the existing old-border and its blue waves into areas of the card that did not originally have it.

This my mid-year pimp update. I wanted to wait until December to do an end of the year update, but a lot of people have been asking to see it together. As a result, I've decided to do a mid-year update. It's my elves deck. It's by far my favorite deck to play and I put my heart and soul into finishing it. I started playing Legacy around a decade ago and from the start, I knew I wanted to play Elves. It was fun and I was a high school student with little to no income. It was no where near tier 1 back then. Back then, it was an all-in combo deck with Summoner's Pact, Emrakul, and Grapeshot as the finishers.

Over the years, I slowly upgraded my deck. I took a break for a few years during college. When I came back, Elves became a whole new deck. With the new legend rule change which made Gaea's Cradle insane and the printing of Craterhoof Behemoth, Elves was finally good. I have a little more income now since graduating college and I upgraded from English nonfoil to English foil, and then now it's almost complete as Chinese foil. All of the alters were done by Scourge Alters. Right now he is frantically working on the side board and hopefully, the ENTIRE 75 will be complete by Christmas this year xD

2) My basics cost $40-50 for the Island and $30 for the Plains.
3) My Moat and Karakas are English because the Moat is more expensive that way and they don't have a Japanese Karakas (yet)

You can get all cards in the language you prefer, besides Moat and Karakas, which comes in matching languages with your duals.

The only problem I have atm is, that I absolutely "hate" the old Griselbrand artwork and love the promo, which is a pain in the ass, cause there is only eng version of it :cry:

It's like your rich neighbor buying a 458 Italia and you deciding to import a 2000GT. One is for new money, the other is for those with class :cool: You should understand this, seeing as you've said in the past a lot of what goes into pimping is tied to art (which is the reason why I will not be sleeving up EMA generic-counterspell-art Force of Wills in place of ITA burning man.)

Legends is a special case because ITA Legends is epitome of budget, while other ITA stuff isn't necessarily budget (such as the FoWs and the super-hard-to-find Ice Age PBlasts.) As for the matter on basics, I don't run Guru because quite frankly they're 1) ugly and 2) played out and I don't run Japanese (mentioned above but so below) because the only art I would want outside of the 2 I have now are the Torii island and Sunflower plains and they aren't available in Japanese script.

3) The consistency in my deck is: cards that can be Japanese (BB) are, cards that can't are either ITA BB or English BB (literally 1 card at this point, discounting basics), and it's consistent through the entire set of cards. The other guy was mixing languages even through the same cards–Snapcaster, and that's a no-no for pimping. But he's since said it's a WIP so can't fault him on that, only on posting an incomplete pimp deck but that's whatever. But having Chinese Jaces when German exist is awkward as fuck.

You dont really get the point, it is ok if you take cards you like more, it is your deck after all. But don't be like your deck is totally conistency all the time, when you sacrafice consistent for cards of higher value or better art on severall cases like the Basics or the new border swords or the khans fetches.

I say go for the Japanese hymns if that's all you need to have the entire deck japanese (except for dual lands, which will never be japanese). Since this is the first japanese printing, it's not truly a reprint since it's something completely new.

I know it may sound too extreme, but in general that's my rule :) What's pimp is entirely subjective, so that's just my opinion.

There are some exceptions. For example I prefer foil Japanese Mercadian Masques Brainstorms over Ice Age ones. Or foil Japanese Dark Rituals over Alpha ones.

I also prefer the old frame over the new one. So taking a new frame reprint over an original old frame card sounds really bad to me. I understand what you say, if you consider having everything in the same language that important, then you "have to" go with the reprint. Cards from Fallen Empires to Alliances are problematic, as they don't exist in Asian and they don't look as cool as Alpha-The Dark (in English, of course) ones. Force of Will is another classic example of that issue. In some cases, playing with reprints doesn't "hurt" that much, like for example when using 4th Edition Black Bordered Korean Swords to Plowshares instead of Alpha ones.

Honestly I don't know what I'd do in your position, but I think I'd stick with Susan Van Camp's originals.

depends how deep you are and how consitent you find the postmodern border, In case of really old card I'd keep the oldest version, imo you can't go wrong with that, the old cards are pieces of art unlike the reprints (see Maze)... on the other hand I'd understand a new Karakas in all foil taxes, jap would not be enough for me.... after all it's your deck, play what you like (I'm playing korean Dark Rituals over alpha set I have btw.) ... just be prepared when the pimp police comes :tongue:

Yes... But it isn't that easy for those of us that like Asian and /or foil cards...

For example, Pyroblast. The Ice Age one doesn't really feel pimp (unless you consider "pimp" whatever is the first version, or you like Spanish/Portuguese/Italian/French/German cards and are happy with a non foil card). And 5th Edition reprints, even if in Korean/Simplified Chinese/Japanese, still don't look that good (they are a reprint, non foil and white bordered). Soon we'll be able to play with foil Japanese/Simplified Chinese ones, but you know, something feels bad about it. Even if foil Japanese, even if it's the first foil Japanese version... it's still a reprint (and a new frame one).

It's hard to define some rules that you can follow in every case. For example, if you considered the first foil Asian version as the pimpest, you would be playing foil Japanese Explorations. Sorry, but I prefer original ones, specially Korean or Traditional Chinese ones. And if you stick with the first Asian reprint, then you'd have to play for example 5th Edition Pyroblast, Brainstorm, painlands, etc.

Trying to define the most pimp is silly, different people prioritize different things. For example if I were to play only the most expensive version of a card I'd be playing ONS foil Heaths alongside Expedition Verdants which IMO (and a lot of other people's opinion...) would look trash (but if you like it, then you do you). Instead I play Khans heaths with my verdants because having them match better means more to me than price or original print.

It also depends on the rest of the deck (or collection). If everything is Asian non foil, then I prefer Korean 4th Edition ones. If it's a Modern deck and everything has the new frame, then 8th Edition foil is more coherent. If it's a Legacy deck where you already are running other Alpha cards, like dual lands, then Alpha ones may be the best option. Etc.

Having rules makes decisions easier. And then the deck should look more uniform that way. If you randomly pick whatever you prefer in a vacuum, then the deck may look like a mess.

Also, from a financial point of view, I prefer to just stick with something that already exists. Otherwise, you'd have to keep buying the newest "pimp" version that is released (that probably happened to some people that had original foils but prefer expeditions). Also, if others also stick to a previous pimp version, the price resists better reprints (as they aren't seen as substitute goods). That's a relevant topic, as those with pimp collections have lots of money invested there.

2) Pimping has inherent value concerns, yes. So the reason I decided to spend an extra $100 on the Moat was because I had the money to. Legends is a special case because ITA Legends is epitome of budget, while other ITA stuff isn't necessarily budget (such as the FoWs and the super-hard-to-find Ice Age PBlasts.) As for the matter on basics, I don't run Guru because quite frankly they're 1) ugly and 2) played out and I don't run Japanese (mentioned above but so below) because the only art I would want outside of the 2 I have now are the Torii island and Sunflower plains and they aren't available in Japanese script.



While I can see why to some it looks bad, I honestly prefer the Italian versions. The colors look so much better.

Those Betas look sweet (or some of the Swords might be alpha looking closely), they are way better than some reprint foils.

Personally would go for everything that could be foil japanese or sweet like FNM swords and if I had to pick one counterspell it would be japanese foil 7th ed, but the deck is still gorgeous either way. I do like the guru lands over every other option though short of you getting summer although honestly everything in the deck is BB/the gurus fit in better.

Vintage deck is a tiny bit short of perfection with the random duress being s-chinese and that necro not being korean, but it's still something I'd give my arm and leg for it's so fantastic.

Absolutely. This certainly isn't an insane deck featuring A/B Power and Duals, no this is right up there with the guy who posted his 4th ed basics. I don't understand how you can be successful enough to make the kind of money to buy these cards, but then play with the non-most pimp versions.

This thread is closed to anyone who doesn't post decks according to the following rules:
Alpha Power
If in Summer, Summer printing
If not Alpha or Summer and pre-Saga, must be miscut but not NFC!. Minimum 1 card showing with text, 4 cards showing preferrable.
If Saga - 8th, Jap Foil
If 9th on, Russian Foil
Bonus points if the entire deck is graded, BGS 9.5. People who post non-BGS 9.0 cards will still be subject to ridicule.

EDIT: Playmats: Playmats must be hand-drawn by artists, or can consist of a string of Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Summer, and/or Arabian Nights boosters tapped together. Special promotional playmats worth atleast the cost of an average home-payment are acceptable.
