View Full Version : Landstill vs. BBS. Which is the better deck?

It seems to be that Landstill has a huge glaring weakness with Blood Moon, as do a lot of Control decks. Now BBS is likely weaker versus goblins, and that's a glaring weakness, but the deck did put up good results even in goblins heavy tournaments. And it's manabase is a lot more resilient.

I haven't sided with either deck one way or the other yet. I just want to get your opinion on the deck as compared to the deck currently occupying it's metagame slot.

Here's a quick and dirty BBS list to try...

14 Island
4 Flooded Strand
4 Mishra's Factory

3 Force Spike/Chrome Mox
4 Brainstorm/Chalice of the Void
4 Mana Leak
4 Counterspell
4 Force of Will
4 Fact or Fiction
3 Impulse

4 Veldalken Shackles
2 Back to Basics
2 Powder Keg
2 Repeal/Ophidian
2 Teferi/Morphling

Sideboard
2 Powder Keg
2 Misdirection/Pithing Needle
2 Repeal
2 Back to Basics
3 Control Magic/Something
4 Chalice of the Void

Here are some key comparisons...

Swords vs. Shackles (gamebreaking) - As an answer to aggro, Shackles just seems like it has so much more staying power. Stealing your opponents Mystic Enforcer or Exalted Angel and using them to block your opponents own threats is usually better than killing it.

Standstill vs. Back to Basics (gamebreaking) - There are just an insane number of manabases nowadays that are 90% nonbasic. Standstill is a win more card that doesn't actually help you recover from a bad position and occasionally backfires even when played perfectly thanks to an opponent topdecking a Wasteland and/or Nether Spirit. Plus it becomes unplayable vs 43 Lands and several Loam based decks. The same now very frequently seen decks that Back to Basics autowins against.

Keg vs. Deed/Wrath - Deed/Wrath are clearly better. But are they better enough to justify losing the above two cards. Sweepers afterall usually just buy you a few turns versus Aggro.

Teferi vs. Morphling - Being able to cast your threat at the end of your opponents turn is a powerful advantage.

If you really like standstill, one possible direction if you don't want to lose the gamebreaking power of Shackles, Back to Basics and Teferi is to play Mono Blue Landstill.

For example...

-3 Impulse
-1 Force Spike
-1 Island
+1 Fairie Conclave
+4 Standstill

Possibly adding Nev's Disk as well.

Do you think that would be worthwhile?

Is landstill really the superior deck? If so, would it be if more decks started running Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon? Why?

Just want to hear your honest opinions is all.

Alternatively, instead of playing mono-blue Landstill, you could play something more along the lines of traditional U/W Control. The ability to fetch out basic Plains and Islands makes Wastelands and Moons irrelevant, and white offers options (read: StP) that mono-blue severely lacks.

Splashing colors cuts the deck off from it's two biggest strengths, Back to Basics and Shackles. I'm not positive if that's worth it.

What matters is that BBS, as little played as it is, put up excellent results most everytime it was played, and this was during Solidarity's reign despite the deck having no game against it. Now with Solidarity has been displaced largely by faster combo decks, I think people should take a second look at it.
