I made this deck with a friend of mine because he is old school, and after looking at the prevalent decks in Legacy, he said, man I have that deck together! Not exactly by any means because he hasn’t played in years, but he pulled this unsleeved deck out of a box. Low and behold it had Lightning bolt and chain lightning and dark ritual. Hippies and black knights and orders of the ebon hand and stone throwing devils. (which he commented were stone cold with a lightning bolt against a Serra angel. This made me smile.)
We tweaked it...
Shadowmage Infiltrator x4
Natuko Shade x4
Rotting Giant x3
Hippie x4
Dimir Infiltrator x2
Sarcomancy!! (carnophage) x4
Hymn x4
Rise//Fall x3
Lightning Bolt x4
Dark Ritualx4
Jitti x4
Polluted Delta x4
Blood stained Mire x4
Badlands x4
Underground Sea x2
Watery Grave x1 (I need another Sea)
Swamp x3
Island x1
Mountain x1
Side: (untested for the most part. We have tested with these cards in, but not as a side as such.)
Pyroclasm x4
Duress x4
? Negator x4
? Red Elemental Blast x3
?
?
I had the parts to update the deck. Nantuku husk made Greg flip his lid. His comment “a unholy strengthend Nightmare that turns dark ritual into a giant growth should not cost two, even if you have to tap out for it.” I then told him about nimble mongoose and, after sevral pithy coments about rouge elephants, he no longer felt like he was cheating. Anyway, I have a pretty straight forward goblins deck together and Ring leader just kept winning games. Card draw seemed in order to Greg, and I agreed. Enter Blue. So far its just been the two of us testing it. I will not go into match up analysis or anything, but I’ll say something about the card interactions.
Shadowmage Infiltrator is crazy. The cards in this deck are mean and getting more of them put it over the top.
Natuko Shade, the mana base actually supports him more (if but slightly) than standard builds. Since there are only 2 non swamps in this build, vs 4 in the stock red death build. This amount to jack-squat as far as I can tell, but its something.
Rotting Giant and Hippie are old standbys. Notably Hippie dies to pyroclasm, and the giant does not. Pyroclasm out of the side is sweet, I’ll get to that.
Dimir Infiltrator is a weak link for sure, but has such synergy with the rest of the deck its in. It tutors for hymn, rise//fall, and jitti, giant, and Natuko Shade. Post board it grabs Pyroclasm. He also holds jitti like a champ, and blocks a number of cards quite well. Lacky and Silver Knight are of note.
Sarcomancy is questionably too. We wanted a more aggressive 1 drop. This has great synergy with negator post board. It can also set up the turn one sarcomancy, turn two ritual into jitti. Which is fun when it happens. (crappy ass synergy with rise, and I know it. But I have these cool zombie tokens…. For a tournament they would be carnophage.)
Hymn is Ok I guess.
Rise//Fall is my favorite card in the deck by far. When you have 7 hymns you discard tends to go dead, since you opponent ends up top decking a lot. Rise is sometimes just dope on its own, lifting all sorts of things into your opponents hand to be aced by hippie. It has fun interaction with infiltrator as well, returning the tutor you used to get the rise in the first place to your hand. Sometimes you just bounce their Silver Knight and your Giant, play it, and feel pretty happy about the tempo swing.
Lightning Bolt & Dark Ritual, Boons are Ok too…
Jitti is in for Chain lightning. This deck, without the negators proposes a longer game, and the Jitti is better for ongoing creature removal needs, life gain and damage. Plus this deck has a 10 evasion creatures.
The non-existent side...
Pyroclasm doesn’t effect my creatures to much. Murders a lot of other stuff, owns goblins as well as other decks.
Duress has flitted back and forth in the sarcomancy slot. This will depend on the meta game I suppose.
Also I’m thinking about recoil for this deck. With the amount of discard this deck packs this could be an instant vindicate.
