I have just started running a series of tournaments that will run every week. Entry fee is $3 and we had 17 people show up for our first event.

Check out the tourney report:

Event 2: the results are up here:

http://www.txgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4893

this time 27 people showed up, and 9 people from the last event didn't even show up on this event so we should have 40 or so ppl very soon on a weekly basis.

Lol that is one janky meta. I would suggest raising the entry fee to $5. You can offer bigger prizes which would attract more people.

actually i think that would reverse the effect. most of the places in dallas play standard and many have tried $5 entry for legacy and none of them could even get 8 together.

i decided that $3 is the perfect number to get ppl interested into the format because it is low risk if you lose. more interested in getting the community active in legacy.

hopefully we should get to 40+ every weekend for legacy.

That would certainly make it the most active legacy metagame in the US.

Magic players have no loyalty, and will participate as long as they can't find anything better to do. BUt congrats on a good turnout just the same.

Also, Happy, the San Diego folks have told me that they routinely get 30 guys in their weekly gigs.

When i was at san diego, they do have quite a bit of people, but it is closer to 20 people than it is to 30 people.

For us it was strange, because i really do believe we can get up to 60 or more. here is why.

I started the tourney a week earlier than planned, because 10 people asked me to throw it early, and 17 people showed up so with none of the original 10 even showing up. (so i guess theortical 27 ppl?)

This past week we had 27 show up (with 19 NEW players this time --- i guess we could have a theortical 46? --- only 1 of the original 10 that asked me to throw it early showed up)

Honestly it could easily be 60 people or more show up to this Legacy tourney of our's.

I am not expecting 60+ people to show up. I am just excited that we are trucking along and we get to see a lot of creative decks. The best thing about the whole tourney is that most of the "competitive" decks that are from mainline netdecks have all been beaten by rogue / non-competitive decks.

Most of the top 8 and top 4's are rogue.

I guess this is what made flash so strong. It didn't fail to rogue decks. hehe.

I live in Austin and we had a simmilar effect going on in our weekly tournements. I think we capped at like 27 one week and had a steady 12-18 for a month or two. Then me and a few friends and a couple other guys got good at Legacy and chased away the scrubbs. Now we struggle for 8 each week. When Im playing goblins or just about any deck anywhere in these forums or something of my own development it just crushes Green/White creature aggro or any random deck that casual/Legacy players enjoy making.

Hopefully we can get the meta going again here in Austin by using the tournement scene as a testing grounds instead of a place to stomp scrubs for store credit.

That sounds great. I have a few questions I would like to ask.
Number 1: how much did they charge for Legacy tourney down there? Number 2: did you ever have rogue decks beat all of the top tier decks? we noticed that all of the top tier'ed decks got smashed randomly by rogue decks because the sideboard meta was too wide open

Number 3: when you coming to dallas and win a few duals up here? ;-)
Number 4: how did you do in Top 8? or do you just go like 4 rounds and get prizes? here we have to go standard 4 or 5 or 6 rounds of swiss then cut to Top 8 (if it is greater than 20) or cut to Top 4.
Number 5: how does goblins beat troll ascetic with double amadillo cloak (and then sword of fire and ice) with auriok champion backup? sounds like goblins can't beat G/W.... too much quick life gain and evasion.

Wow, I've been looking for a replacement for the Tourneys that used to run at Legends in Weatherford... despite being a small town, often upwards of 25 could be found... until the owner went to jail and his store was run into the ground : (

Anyway, I look forward to attending an event, maybe in a couple of weeks.

This is great news. Invite all of your 25 friends/players. I am sure we can get 60 or more just in the room.

Number 1: how much did they charge for Legacy tourney down there?

It started at five and we had no complaints, went to 6, still no complaints. My store pays out like 80 or so percent of entry fee.

Number 2: did you ever have rogue decks beat all of the top tier decks? we noticed that all of the top tier'ed decks got smashed randomly by rogue decks because the sideboard meta was too wide open

Yeah of course there were rogue decks that beat some top tier decks but not over the long run. It took a while, as I said, for the good, dedicated legacy players to do well and the others to get bored, tired, or sick of losing.

Number 3: when you coming to dallas and win a few duals up here? ;-)

We drove to Dallas a few times for events and we drove to San Antonio for a Mox tournement and six out of the top eight was from Austin.
Im sure if you pick a decent time, place and prize payout Austin could bring 10-15 dudes to participate.

We go four rounds Swiss no t8 unless it is a larger tournement.

I wasnt saying goblins can beat every deck in the format I was only stating that consistent players with well tuned decks will win in the end. If you are planning to maintain a player base you may want to try spicing things up a bit if you see attendence faulter. Try adding extra incentive to people that play a particular theme for the week. Encourage growth and keep the casual players comming in to play.

Just wondering how it works else where. I went down to San Diego for a bit to check out their Legacy scene, and that's where I got a lot of ideas from.

Just a few more questions, and thanks for patiently chatting with me.

When you got 4 rounds of Swiss with no top 8 how many people is that for? And do you win if you just undefeated?

Which store did you play Legacy at? because I lived down in Austin for about two years and I was down there from 2003-2005. I played a few places here and there, but the Legacy scene didn't seem like there were a lot of people, but from the decks I did see there were a LOT of aggro decks.

Also do you have any beta dual lands (no foreign bb crap)? I am looking to finish out 2 playsets (80 total)... I have about 25 or so now, and will be done pretty soon. I was wondering if you did or your friends did and would they sell any to me?

Much thanks,

We had a good amount of people (20 or so) in our weeky events. Then my team formed and we started beating everyone else out of top 4-8's. Alot of people stopped going when they got stick of losing every week. This has happened alot of places Ive played with many formats.

Thor's Hammer mostly because it is closer to my teams houses but we would play anywhere in town if more people regularly showed up at the other stores.

I dont really know any of them personally but if you try hard enough some high end card traders will show up at prereleases and such. If your really interested give it a shot to find the people with the good cards. They usually have thick binders and large backpacks. They would be willing to sell maybe, (although illegal to do a sanctioned event I think). You could just trade for everything just as well though.

So what do you think should be done about it. Recently my team and I started using the local tournement to test decks but often even unfinished decks still tromp most casual decks.

It is hard not to play to win because of the lack of large tournaments in the area and little chance from week to week to prove ourselves and our decks each tournament.

the next weekend i am going to be in orlando.

but ill see if i can get someone to run it proxy for me.

also one weekend will be G-kon so there wont be any staff there to help run the event.
