All-
I wanted to point your direction to the link for the Gen Con Legacy (and Vintage) coverage. Updates can be found here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=welcome/conventions/gencon07#2). Keep in mind you may need to navigate to Thursday and Friday for additional events.
A number of Top 8 decklists, including those from the Legacy Championships, are posted. I typed up the top 32 lists from that tournament and they will be posted eventually.
Enjoy and regards,
Bill Stark

This T8 blows my mind. 4 Threshold! One of which doesn't even splash. 0 Goblins or Storm combo! A 42 land!
What the hell is going on?

Heh, if you think about it for a moment, it all makes sense. Threshold got Tarmogoyf. Threshold has a dramatically improved Goblins-MU and it was already good for UGr, so it should be solidly favourable. That removed the natural predator of Threshold. Threshold is the clear best deck, everyone plays it and people shy away from combo. The little combo that is present gets smashed by the flood of Threshold or at least has to fight against odds each round. As a consequence, decks that prey on Threshold while still holding their own against the Goblins doubtlessly present, such as 42 Lands and Landstill, are suddenly superb metagame choices. The winning list is a Threshold-list with tech that in turn preys on these control-decks and takes out the chaff, going straight two-colour for consistency against the mirror, as well as the ability to cut opponent off colours while maintaining all two himself. The one thing I can't explain is UGr performing so much better than UGw. UGw should be the natural predator of UGr. I guess there was much more UGr than UGw around to start with and enough Goblins to chop down the UGw builds so the fact that they've got the advantage in the pseudomirror wasn't enough to pull UGws through.

What I find strange is the fact that over the last few weeks, I've been testing a UG Threshold list that runs Wasteland.
I'll have to add that to my list of decks stolen from me.

Meh, don't feel too bad about it. I'm betting most of us had tried cooking up such list, and all of us had been underwhelmed with it, and all of us had been wrong.
For the record, mine was (SB omitted out of shame):
// Lands
4 [TE] Wasteland
3 [UNH] Island
4 [PR] Tropical Island
1 [UNH] Forest
2 [ON] Wooded Foothills
4 [ON] Polluted Delta
// Creatures
4 [OD] Nimble Mongoose
4 [FUT] Tarmogoyf
3 [OD] Werebear
2 [DIS] Trygon Predator
// Cantrips
4 [PR] Brainstorm
4 [IA] Portent
3 [OD] Predict
// Counters
4 [PR] Force of Will
3 [NE] Daze
3 [PR] Counterspell
// Tools
2 [BOK] Umezawa's Jitte
2 [SOK] Pithing Needle
2 [FD] Vedalken Shackles
2 [FD] Engineered Explosives
What was yours like?

My favorite part of this has to be that half of the top eight is like, 'Yeah I put no prep time in at all, I just played what somebody gave me and here I am!'. Amusing. Congrats to Diceman for winning the Legacy champs.

Pat's deck has 4 Alurens and 1 Aluren, which might explain something. Vroman probably just tried to pull Wakefields.

What was yours like?This was my favorite version, although silly;
Lands
3 Flooded Strand
3 Forest
5 Island
3 Polluted Delta
4 Tropical Island
Creatures
4 Werebear
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Nimble Mongoose
4 Erayo, Soratami Ascendant
2 Trygon Predator
Spells
4 Daze
4 Chrome Mox
4 Mishra's Bauble
4 Portent
4 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
Of all the variations I tested, this one was surprisingly the best. It could just have benefited from the Workstation shuffler though.

Since this thread is about the Gen Con Legacy/Vintage results, I wanted to give a special congratulations to Mad Zur (Jessie Hatfield) for making Top 4 at the biggest Legacy event of the year with Cephalid Breakfast. I was disappointed that I couldn't go, but hopefully there was a good representation of The Source members there.

I was personally disappointed with the top 8. Maybe it's me.
1st place deck looks like trash.
2nd 43 fucking land? Didn't play combo at all?
4 Thresholds in top 8.
0 Goblins?
0 Combo?
This is almost as bad was when Zoo won Bob's Dual Land Draft.
0 Combo?
What do you think Breakfeast and Ichorid are?

Congrats to all the top 8'ers. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it this year.

The Grand Prix was bigger. I've been thinking, with Legacy Grand Prix's topping 800 people, how can you call the GenCon event the championship anymore? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a Legacy Grand Prix each year and call that winner the Champion OR up the prizes at the GenCon event to a Grand Prix level so that it attracts 500+ players. Maybe Wizards is lagging a bit on realizing this, but hopefully they are noting that a Legacy championship on a Grand Prix level would be very successful.
Also, to the top 8'ers, do you think those oversized cards are worth anything and would it have been better if dual lands were given out as they were last year?

Well breakfast isn't really a true combo deck. It is more of a combo-control deck like aluren.
And ichorid is well... it's just horrible. Its not really competitive at all imo so i would just totally ignore it.

I think that any deck that instantly wins the game after assembling a certain combination of cards can safely be called a combo deck. The fact that it has a significant control element just means that it's a good combo deck, not that it isn't one.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I mean, it's only competitive enough to T8 GenCon....
You can stop yelling at me fuckers.
Yeah, I suppose we could but where would the fun in that be?
Also, a gigantic congratulations to Jesse Hatfield, who made Sourcers everywhere proud. I'm glad he made T8 at this one because I feel somewhat personally responsible he didn't Day 2 at Columbus.

I meant storm combo, Breakfast is a fine deck. I'm just disappointed, EPIC should've went and atleast shown people what a top 8 is supposed to look like.

The Canadians pooled our cards together and sold our 9 cards to a store, no one was happy with the prizes, and especially because they were drafted rather than handed out, I also top 8ed the prelims till 4 am just to get 12 packs the night before, these prizes were truly terrible. The prizes looked like I went to the Photocopy shop around the corner and made them myself, to top it off the judge dropped one of them as he was holding them up, dinging it. We couldn't get too much for them because we were unwilling to take them in our cramped van and risk smashing them on the way up to Canada, then dealing with selling them on ebay, so we probably ended up taking a loss. I would have been 10000000000x happier with duals.

I don't blame you guys. I honesly think that if duals and a couple of boxes of Italian Legends went out for prize support then a lot more people would have shown up, making it much more competitive. Oh well I guess, grats to jesse.

Vroman misregistered his deck and had to play 62 cards with 2 Pyroclasm main (supposed to be side). He would never purposefully run more than 60.

How much did the over sized card go for? I know the Alpha league people were offering 160 for the fetch lands so I am really curious.
When/where is the full list of the top32 going to be posted?

I played Belcher in the pre-lim and took 14th. Record was 4-3. Lost to Aluren and I think 2 Thresh. Had a chance against Aluren in one game where I belched and the Taiga shows up on the 4th card. ARG!
Then made a horrible decision in the championships and played TES (with zero playtesting, maybe 10-15 goldfishes) and went 2-3. Lost to Belcher(ah, the irony), Countersliver (wtf) and Thresh. Should have stuck with Belcher and prayed for good matchups.
A guy I know got into the top 16 with counter Dreadnaught with zero playtesting and I think he put the deck together about 10 minutes before registration.

due to bad directions our car showed up at gencon late, and I was still building my deck as round 1 of the prelim was starting. I was extremely rushed and the judge had already collected my deck list, and I was still pulling cards out of my binder from memory.
so yes, I ended up running 62 cards by accident, with 2 pyroclasm that were supposed to be only side, were registered as both main and side. I got game loss round3, but still won that match and made top8. ironicaly, pyroclasm main was phenomenal for me, and won me lots of game 1s. so I kept that mistake for the champs tourney, and cut some irelevent maindeck artifact/enchantment hate.
heres the list I ran in the championship, which I basicaly quit out of at 3-1, bc I was paired against teammate jacob riehm. I scooped to jacob to improve his chances, and I decided Id rather play in the vintage prelim, bc Im primarily vintage player
