Ooh, interesting. Is there a car going from the suburbs of Boston?Since people will be back in school by the time this tournament happens, there is a good chance that our car isn't going to be full this time. If it isn't, we'll give you a ride, because at least my brother and I are definitely going to make this.

OffTheWall

5-8 will still be 6 packs, which is double what they have been previously. With keeping the entrance fee to $10.00 I already need 35 people to break even.

technogeek5000

There are going to be a few cards I need to borrow/buy/trade for:
3 Foothills
1 Cave-In
2 Counterbalance
1 Top

There's probably more I can't think of right now; if there is I'll edit them in later. I'm hoping Kevin has some of the cards there to buy, but I'd rather not rely on buying them there, on the off-chance he doesn't have them (and I'd rather just trade for/borrow the foothills, as I really don't feel like spending much money).

36-38 I think

1. Thresh URG
2. Thresh UGRW (w/ Wastelands)
3/4. Goblins (w/ MD Crypts)
3/4. Agro Domain (maybe there is a more elegant name for this deck?)

I would appreciate if your going to comment, then at least explain your reason with a more sound argument then the deck was just awful. The deck was a very good choice for the metagame up there and the winner deserves some praise even though the deck list is not your standard Threshold list.

Deadguyesque deck. It wasnt suicide black because i splashed white but it wasnt deadguy either because i played to much aggro. it was a fun tournament but i will wont be able to attend any more of these as of now because 2 hours is to long of a drive to not take home legacy playables. It's basic logic first and foremost, that you're a good enough player to understand. Usually Thresh runs 17-18 lands, basically because testing has proven that that is the optimal amount of lands to run without getting mana screwed or color screwed in the face of Wasteland, and not being mana flooded as well. Granted, 17-18 lands is usually not enough for most decks, but with Thresh's large arsenal of cantrips and low mana curve, they can get away with lowering their landcount, and still run smoothly. His build denies both of those concepts and plays 15 color producing land, and only 7 cantrips. Granted, he is playing 3 wasteland which produce colored mana, but it's a hard sell to call them steady mana production when you've spread yourself into 4 colors and the majority of your spells aren't even asking for colorless mana.

The fact that he won the tournament indicates to me that he did indeed get lucky. He states that he never got mana screwed once? Only played against Wasteland once?

This shows a misunderstanding of the basic concepts that testing and math have proven in this game.

People just don't get lucky all the time that wins tournaments. I'm sure most of the players that attended this tournament do not appreciate you ripping the winner's deck apart, especially from someone that didn't bother showing up.

I'd like to thank Nickrit2000 and mikekelly for sticking up for myself and my deck.

@ Troopatroop: I went playing the deck I felt the most comfortable playing. I'm the first to admit I got lucky by not playing many decks with wasteland and not getting mana screwed, but at least give me some credit. I don't think it's all luck only losing three games the entire day.

I played red because the burn is just good in the late game and with wee dragonauts and it improves my goblins matchup. I played white for STP. From the last tournament I played in when I was playing only the red splash I felt I didn't have enough answers to higher toughness creatures and the four swords seemed to help a lot.

First off, Great Job again Kevin on another fantastic tourney.
I would like to say if you were not at the tournament don't judge how someone's deck is in your opinion. As for you Troop, why don't you hop on your bicycle and ride down here and play instead of making decisions Pat's Deck.

Also I finally realized that people will do almost anything to get Tarmogoyf's. Geez Lego are you that despirate to get Tarmogoyf's.

That's all I got to say.

Rehallek
09-16-2007, 09:20 PM
As far as the mana base is concerned, I'm relatively aware it's iffy. But with fetches it never really seemed to be a problem. Nothing is double costed so I only need one of each land out. I already had a bad matchup to anything playing reccuring wasteland. And I'm not too concerned if it's not reccurring. I may add the one time I did play against wasteland he started off with double wasteland. I still won that game. He wasted my first tropic and I ended up wasting his second wasteland.
As far as running the wastelands goes. I may end up not running them. But I did beat affinity because I wasted his Nexuses. It was also good against Ichorid wasting Colliseums.

See now you're throwing irrelevant things in there. Yes, luck can indeed win a tournament. Don't act like this game doesn't involve luck, of course it does, and in my testing, winning with the manabase he played was lucky. If the players that played in the tournament don't like that I'm ripping his manabase apart, Okay? Why would they not like that? That's their problem.

I didn't show up because I'm in fucking College. Some people have shit to do.

I'm not sure if that was a condescending remark towards TheNick, but I'm pretty sure that your "shit to do" at a state university is fairly irrelevant compared to the "shit" Nick does with banking/financial advising.

Rehallek Lavamancer's manabase certainly looks unstable, and luck is always a part of winning any sizable event. That said, you also don't win an event of this size on just luck alone. So congratulations to Rehallek Lavamancer on his win.

If the players that played in the tournament don't like that I'm ripping his manabase apart, Okay? Why would they not like that? That's their problem.

If what you are saying is true then he should have been mana screwed many more times. The fact of the matter is that while he only had a few color-making lands he had wastelands to make up for this. By using less cantrips he'll draw more "cards" that do something other than search his deck.

So congratulations to Rehallek Lavamancer on his win.

much agreed, in regards to Troops comment, I believe that was aimed towards me. My response is what about when school was not in session? HUH

Troop, if you want to discuss this we can do it either by PM or at the mana leak.

I do have to agree with Troop for the most part. Playing a deck with an extremely shaky manabase, which i think everyone would agree that the winning deck did not have a stable manabase, is a very big risk in any large tournament. I am not saying that the pilot was not a good player, because you obviously have to know what you are doing to win a large tourney.

I think what Troop was trying to express was that this deck is not a version that would be a good choice to play in a big tourney most of the time. The pilot did have to get lucky to win the tourney with that manabase.

This is actually a compliment to the pilot because skill, and a little luck in matchups, overrode the fact that the deck had a higher than average probability to get manascrewed.

On another note, it is a testament to how good gro/thresh is right now. Two decks made the top 2, and one of them with a shaky manabase.

Congrats to everybody that made top 8. If I hadn't had to work I might have tried to get a ride out there, and wrecked ur face with wastelands!

Saying that college is less time consuming that work is a bit off. A 40 hour a week job is just that. Weekends are your own time. College has a lot more extra things that take time. Your weekdays are usually less crowded, but weekends can be busy. I don't know about nick's job personally, but I am assuming here.

On another note, I hate troop with a passion, so go to town.

Whoa what? How did you think that was directed towards you? I know we've had a disagreement before, but no that wasn't directed at anyone. It's just a silly argument to say, "Oh well you shouldn't talk, you weren't even there!". I didn't even think about going, I don't think it matters much.

Why is it such a lucrative statement to say that someone had a nice run of luck? I'm only basing it on my own experiences.

I'm with Nick on this one. I was there and got to see the meta game first hand. There were some really strange builds of some standard legacy decks. I mean every Dead Guy/Red Death/Sui deck I seen ran Carnophage, just to mention one. It was a good turn out at like 37 I think. I played Burn and lost to goblins? I lost to Farie Stompy? These are two decks I should destroy but diden't. So yes maybe the winner did get lucky, or maybe he just knew the meta better. Either way if you were not there you shoulden't judge other peoples builds or question there skill as a player.

I would like to thank Off the Wall Games for running this great event. I hope we can come down from the cuse again sometime. Congrats to the top 8 and to the winner. Also thanks to the few guys who played some type 4, it was fun! It made the 1-3 day a little easier to deal with.

I never questioned anyone skill at all, I simply said he didn't run enough lands. 15 Colored lands out of 18 in a 4 color deck is not optimal.

Why do I have to be there to look at his decklist?

What the fuck are you talking about? I never said it was less time consuming. "I didn't show up because I'm in fucking College. Some people have shit to do." implies that Nick has nothing better to do, which is certainly not true.

Oh, and thanks for the lecture about the difference between college (graduated 2003) and working (since I was 16).

No no no, you implied that. I didn't mean it that way, all I meant was that I couldn't be there, I've never even met Nick. I have no reason to say something like that.

I should have said "I had shit to do".

The fact that he won the tournament indicates to me that he did indeed get lucky. He states that he never got mana screwed once? Only played against Wasteland once?

This shows a misunderstanding of the basic concepts that testing and math have proven in this game.

Indicating that he got lucky, to me at least, is questioning his skill as a player. You don't have to be there to see his decklist, you need to be there to see everyone else's list.

My testing has shown, that going that many rounds without once getting mana screwed with the manabase he was running was lucky. That's not to say that he isn't a good player, because I've never seen him play, but to make a decision like that to run that manabase indicates to me that he may not be a good player on that evidence alone. Being a good player to me is also being a good deckbuilder, and a pivotal point in deckbuilding is manabases. My experience is that, that few lands is quite dangerous, and he should have played more, or cut wastelands.

I think the confusion is lying at where other people think I'm saying he only won because he got lucky, and I'm not. I'm saying he got lucky for not being manascrewed, and that definitely contributed to him winning.

I never got to join in on your games (I'm the kid who was wearing the white hat), but I saw some crazy shit involving Shining Shoal pitching a Treva.
