I just came in 2nd at a 38 Person Tournament in Hadley (http://mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6754). Unfortunately, I didn't take notes, so this report will be purely from memory. I know when I read reports, I really don't care about the non-magic stuff, so I won't bore you in that area. Onto the report!
Here's the list I ran:
4 Tropical Island
3 Volcanic Island
4 Wooded Foothills
2 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
1 Mountain
1 Island
1 Forest
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Nimble Mongoose
1 Fledgling Dragon
4 Brainstorm
4 Portent
3 Predict
2 Serum Visions
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Force of Will
4 Daze
2 Counterspell
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Pyroclasm
1 Fire//Ice
SB: 3 Stifle
SB: 3 Red Elemental Blast
SB: 3 Counterbalance
SB: 2 Krosan Grip
SB: 2 Ancient Grudge
SB: 2 Pyroclasm
Round 1 - Mike w/ Wrb Aggro
All I remember about this round is that I got an inordinate number of free counterspells game 1, countering his Confidants and Jittes, and beat with 2 geese. Game 2 he was stuck on 1 land for a while and 'Goyf, 'Goose, and Dragon went the distance.
(1-0)
Round 2 - RoddyVR w/ Slivers
I don't remember much of game 1. I know I bolted a Sinew and countered a Muscle, leaving him with rather small slivers, and Pyroclasm finished them off and let Goyf get in there for 20. Game 2 he gets a turn 2 Crystalline, while I hold 2 bolts in hand. I played Top turn 1, chained cantrips for a couple turns, got out some blockers in the form of a 'Goose and a 'Goyf. I make a minor play error here, but it doesn't end up mattering. His board is 1 Plated, 2 Crystalline. I'm holding 'Clasm in hand, and saw another with the top. I also have 3 lands at this point, and another on top of my library, so I think to myself: "Great! Next turn I can double clasm to wipe his board!" So I pass the turn, he does something irrelevant, then I play the first 'clasm, and then realize that that alone will wipe the board, so I ended up wasting a turn. Oh well. 'Goyf and 'Goose swing for the win.
(2-0)
Round 3 - Technogeek w/ White Death
I win game 1, I assume on the back of 'Goyf and free counters. Game 2 he starts off with a Planar Void, which meets no FoW. I frown. I continue on, chaining cantrips, and eventually see a Grip I sided in. He plays a Dystopia, which ends up killing my 0/1 Goyf, leaving me creatureless. My memory is a little foggy from here, but I know it involved him getting a second Planar Void, and him going on to win with Negator. Game 3 I counter an early Void, and end up getting CB/Top going, but I later regret even boarding that in when he beats face with 3cc creatures (namely Negator). I'm pretty sure Dystopia was somehow involved in this match too.
(2-1)
Round 4 - Slay w/ Landstill
I know he's playing Landstill, as my brother had faced him in the round before. Knowing I have a less-than-favorable match-up, I become pessimistic and feel I'm out of top 8 contention. But oh how wrong I was. Game 1 he did what he was supposed to - counter stuff, kill stuff, generate card advantage. Unfortunately for him, I was able to beat him down with a 'Goyf to 6, and ended the game with EOT Bolt, Main phase Bolt. Game 2 played pretty much the exact same way, with me getting some early beats, and him ending up killing all my men. The game is again ended with EOT Bolt, Main phase bolt.
(3-1)
Just one more game and I'm a good chance at top 8. God, I hope I face goblins.
Round 5 - ?? (Sorry, I forget) w/ Goblins
I see him shuffling and manage to catch a glimpse of a 1/1 for :r:. I smile. MD Clasms and 'Goyfs go the distance game 1. SB brings in 2 more Clasms for game 2. I wipe his board at some point. I get mildly worried when he plays a Goblin King, with a Ringleader and Piledriver in play. I have a threshed 'Goose in play. He swings in with Ringleader and Piledriver, thinking he'll get 5 points of damage in and be able to kill me next turn, but oh how wrong he was. I bolt the King, Stifle the Piledriver's trigger (after explaining that I'm targeting the ability, not the Goblin, and that therefore pro-blue doesn't apply), block him with Goose, and swing in for the win.
(4-1)
Round 6 - ?? w/ ??
I get paired against a 5-0. We draw.
(4-1-1)
I sit around and watch my friend and brother play.
My brother (VsTheWorld) gets his 3rd Landstill match that day (He's playing FS, so needless to say its a bad matchup), and continues to get beaten by Academy Ruins + EE. He goes 3-3 for the day, losing all 3 to Landstill.
My friend, Brian, playing burn is faced up against Red Death. These should be quick rounds. I forget exactly what happens. Brian plays burn spells; his opponent plays confidant. Brian faces a Jitte and dies a little inside. Brian faces another Jitte and Shattering Sprees it. Brian wins 2-1, and ends the day at 4-2, getting somewhere between 9th and 12th place I think.
*TOP 8*
Top 8 - Tehcnogeek w/ White Death
I get into the top 8 and face Technogeek again. Revenge shall be mine! And indeed it was. I completely forget this game, save the fact that I won.
Top 4 - Justin w/ Goblins
Game 1 I cantrip a bunch an manage to find a 'clasm. I let him get a board, wipe it, and beat with some guys at some point. Also he plays a Crypt at some point in game 1, which does next to nothing. Actually, I think it ended up making my 'Goyf bigger. God I love 'Goyf. Game 2 I take 'clasms and Stifles from the board. He gets a turn 1 vial. He ramps up his vial, plays some gobs, gets another vial, and eventually meets 2 clasms over the course of the game. At some point during this game I stifled a Ringleader which he had Lackey'd in after I reminded him of the Lackey trigger.
Top 2 - Rehallek Lavamancer w/ UGrw Thresh (w/ Wasteland) (http://mtgthesource.com/forums/showpost.php?p=162191&postcount=62)
These were tense round, unfortunately I forget exactly how they played out. He ended up winning 2-1. I know they were mostly slow games, both of us building boards of 'Gooses and 'Goyfs. Some highlights: Each of us has a goyf out. I swing and he blocks. I bolt his goyf. He misdirects the bolt to my goyf. Fuck. Game 3 I remember sucked for me, him drawing a lot of business spells and me seeing nothing with top for several turns in a row. I never want to see another stack of land, FoW, land again. Also at the end of game 3 (I think), after I've shuffled away my top (for a Dragon I think, which met a FoW), he's in a winning position and I topdeck a Predict. C'mon, draw me something good. I blindly name Portent with it. I flip the top card. Portent. Unfortunately, I see a land and some irrelevant card. I proceed to stand up, shake his hand, and take my 4 Tundras.
Overall, I was very happy with my deck, and I feel I played pretty well. Concerning my actual deck, the only slot I'm really unsure of is the 2 SB Grudges. I didn't side them in all day. Of course, they would've been great if I had seen Stax, 5/3, FS, or any other artifact heavy deck. But those are pretty rare in my meta. The singleton Fire//Ice is there because I originally wanted to play 2 Dragons, but realized at the last minute that I still had a sleeved Chaos Harlequin (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?name=chaos+harlequin) posing as a Dragon, and didn't have access to a second one. Still, 1 Dragon was enough, and 1 Fire//Ice was also ample. 9 Creatures/5 Burn seemed to work.
And now to the requisite props and slops:
Props:
-'Goyf.
-Kevin for holding great tournaments with great prizes.
-Lego Army Man for lending me 4 Bolts and a Counterbalance, and lending my brother a Volcanic.
-All of my opponents. They were all good people and I wish them all the best of luck in future tourneys.
-Forceofwill for lending me 3 Foothills.
-MD Clasms.
Slops:
-Misdirection. Wtf.
-StP. I don't why, but it makes my 'Goyf feel a sudden urge to become a farmer. And right when I need him to fight for me.
-Boston Kreme donuts from Dunkin' Donuts. Those things wreak havoc with my bowels.
-Long car rides, esp. on the way home when I was exhausted.
-Landstill for giving my brother his 3 losses.
P.S. I'm sure I got some details wrong/mixed up games/etc. So if anyone that was there notes any mistakes in my post, let me know.
