View Full Version : [Deck Idea] Hate Machine Port

Hate Machine is a reasonably successful Extended Deck. I think a port might be possible:

3x City of Traitors
4x Savannah
1x Temple Garden
4x Elvish Spirit Guide
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Ancient Tomb
2x Heath
5x Forest
3x Plains
4x Tarmogoyf
3x Exalted Angel
2x Loxodon Hierarch
4x Chalice of the Void
3x Trinisphere
2x Aven Mindsencor
4x Root Maze
3x Suppression Field
4x Amethyst of Thorn

The main idea of the Extended version is to punish fetchlands and other activated abilities. It still does this here-a first turn Root Maze followed by Supression Field means your opponent is very sad (assuming they have 1 or more Fetches in hand). The other stuff is standard Aggro-Prison pieces. Does this deck have any chance in Legacy?

Why is this deck better than a :g::w: version of Stax? That deck can do everything this deck can, but more effieciently and in a more permanent manner. I mean, from what I've heard, Hate Machine was originally someone's attempt to make a Stax-esque deck in Extended.

If Stax dosen't get its prison pieces down, it looses. This deck can still power out big critters pretty quickly if the prison plan dosen't work.

Then why not go for an aggro-control version of Stax? It just seems like a traditional Stax deck can do everything this deck can, except better. So, out of a traditional Stax list, I'd most likely drop Chalice, Tangle Wire, Geddons, man lands of any stripe, Crucible, and maybe something else. Add in Root Maze, Suppression Field, Thorn of Amethyst, and men - Goyf, Angel, Hierarch. Aven Mindcensor seems irrelevant here except as a way to punish Thresh'n'friends for using fetchlands, as it does jack shit against other decks (well, okay, it beats down for two in the air).

EDIT: Also, BoP seems better than the elves here because of its color-fixing abilities. Sure, it doesn't do damage, but consistently hitting :w::w: or whatever seems strong.

I like the deck and I think it has some potential to be really good with the :2: lands. I think trinisphere is underplayed and suppression field is really good. I would run a board like this:

4 wrath of god
4 tormod's crypt
4 ghostly prison
3 krosan grip

You pretty much take out the thorns and chalices against goblins/creature heavy aggro for sweepers in the form of wrath and ghostly prison. Crypt seems necessary and grip is just great utility.

The deck should have a very strong threshold matchup and landstill doesn't like to see alot of the cards you're running. Combo should be ok but still questionable; prisons for the goblin tokens might be necessary against something really fast like belcher. I duno, I'd like to try it out.

Why are you comparing this deck to Stax? It obviously leans towards more of a G/W Angel Stompy variant.

More like Mike Flore's Hatorator without Worship.

I this deck should be compared to the old Aggro-Decks with interaction disruption to buy time and win. Examples of this are RDW, Goblins, and the like. At least 9Land Stompy had Winter Orb. This deck has everything, and some giant beaters because the format forces you to.

I think Chalice should be a sideboard card vs combo, you do have too much spells @ 1 or 2 to play it main. Aven Mindcensor seems weird.

-4 Chalice of the Void
-2 Aven Mindcensor
-4 Llanowar Elves
+2 Gaddock Teeg (doesn't affect you if you cut Chalice)
+4 Swords to Plowshares (you're not running a single removal spell!?)
+4 Birds of Paradise

I think that these are good changes, although I worry a little about the combo match-up without Chalice (although Teeg does help). With 4x Chalice plus the MD stuff, combo would defenitly be beatable.

What exactly does this deck do if it loses the die roll? Scoop?

Trying to prevent your opponent from casting spells + only 5 cards that go to the grave of your own = one malnourished Tarmogoyf.

While Tarmogoyf is amazing, he doesn't automatically fit into any deck playing Green.

To be more precise:

QFT (Belcher, Truffle Shuffle, Enchantress anyone?)

Actually, you can play Tarmogoyf without 4 Seal of Fire and 4 Mishra's Bauble. So vs Goldfish he stays at 2/3, ok. But sometimes I face opponents who actually play counters (!) and creatures (srsly!) and maybe even sorceries like Duress and stuff, which makes Goyf grow. 4/5 for 2 mana is good enough. You don't have to feed him yourself.

Seriously.

If Tarmogoyf was cuter he would make a great pet :P

Considering that most decks are running Goyf, they will usually just feed him for you. For the few decks out there that don't run Goyf, they will most likely put a few cards in the bin to to grow him for you to at least 3/4. 1G for a 3/4 is still rock solid.
