I am accepting submissions now until Monday, October 1, at 11:59 PM EST.

Congrats to our previous winners:

georgjorge and Whit3 Ghost

--------------Rules and Submission Guidelines--------------

Your deck is composed of 3 cards which all start in your hand.
Your library contains 0 cards and you don’t have a sideboard (Wishes fetch nothing).
Random effects always go in your opponent's favor.
You can see your opponent's hand, so you make the best possible play.
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
You play each opponent twice; once going first and once going second.
For each win, you score 3 points.
For each draw, you score 1 point.
For each loss, you score 0 points.

Three rules restrict the kind of deck you can send. They are:
1.You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
2.You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than one card from his hand per turn.
3. You may not submit a deck that uses a card on the 3CB banned list.

Other than the aforementioned, everything is handled exactly like a real game of Magic.

If you want to play, PM me a message with a heading similar to " 3CB Round #X", where X is the current round number. DO NOT E-MAIL YOUR LIST TO ME. The format for the message should be:

Deck Name

Card #1
Card #2
Card #3

Any Random notes that you want me to know.

It is actually the 9th. I copy/paste'd that from the last one to save time, but forgot to change that.

Sadly, I once again CANNOT edit my opening post.

The end date is Tuesday, October 9th, at 11:59 PM EST.

If I start, I play treetop, you play your hand, I play the rest of my hand then you take 2 burns, then you deal me 2 dmgs, etc. Eventually you die at your 12th turn before being able to attack for the win.

So I guess I should have put some more thinking into this, but as this was the first time I participated, I thought improving the last winner might give me a chance. I'll learn from that for the next one.

My deck was called "Tarmogoyf & friends" because every deck at our local playgroup has that name at the moment, it doesn't matter if there are actual Goyfs in there:

Mishra's Workshop
Steel Golem
Wheel of Torture

1) LL - 0
2) WW - 6
3) WW - 6
4) WW - 6
5) WW - 6
6) WL - 3
7) n/a
8) WL - 3
9) WW - 6
10) WL - 3
11) WW - 6
12) LL - 0

14) LL - 0
15) WW - 6
16) WW - 6
17) LL - 0
18) LL - 0
19) WL - 3
20) WW - 6

So, if I made no mistakes, I count 72 points. I underrated the power of fatties it seems.

Spatula: You win only on the play, when you're on the draw, I win:

Me: Shop, Golem, you Kodama, burn to 19.
Me: Wheel, you go to 16 attack me to 14
Me: attack you to 13, you go to 10 attack me to 8
Me: attack you to 7, you go to 4 attack me to 2
Me: attack you to 1 and wheel kills you in your upkeep.
You have no other option , if you don't play kodama my golem kills you and if you don't attack, my wheel kills you.

Illissius
10-10-2007, 03:30 PM
APriestOfGix: Your total seems 86 to me...

Van Phanel: Chimeric Idol is good because it dodges Tabernacle, sorcery speed removal, and maybe other things, while Steel Golem wins the mirror and potentially has other benefits (I can't remember if 3/4 is the smallest size which races a Thallid or the largest one which doesn't), so it's a tradeoff.

Van Phanel
10-10-2007, 03:45 PM
Yes, you are correct, of course its a tradeoff.

However the downsides aren't that huge. I can't think of a single deck, this would lose to where Chimeric Idol wouldn't lose. Even with Steel Golem dying to Tabernacle I still win the race because playing Tabernacle gives you a very limited choice of an actual winoption. You can either play a manland as in "The sheltered Factory", but Wheel with a single turn of a Golem as a blocker is enough to win that race. You can also play a Storageland and something big (that has to dodge Tabernacle too) and I can't think of anything that would actually win.

Illissius
10-10-2007, 03:53 PM
I knew there was a case I encountered in previous rounds where it mattered... it also stops Lotus-Preacher from stealing your dude and racing Wheel: you drop Idol to force them into action, and then never activate it again after they play Preacher, while you ride the Wheel to victory.

I'm not entirely sure about #16. Seems to me that I lose against one 8/8 token. I'll beat multiple tokens, and 8 seems like the best amount to pay (It's unlikely I would reach 7 upkeeps to make 9 the correct choice).

Good against creatures decks, bad against non-creatures decks, and unable to punch through flying blockers. I figured I would do well against Tabernacle decks, but we didn't see any this time. What's up with that?

...for a total of (disappointing) 58 points...I didn't really expect Island Sanctuary, maybe next time a flyer will show up instead of Pet. I also counted on many people to play last round's succesful deck of Vindicate + Bounceland.

@VanPhanel: You don't win both, you lose on the draw. I get Warrior active before you can drop your second threat, and Pet races your first threat.

@frolll: It's a draw both times, as I always sac my Warrior, and Pet can damage you enough before Halberdier comes into play that you will have to hold it back to block.

@Wildfire: You lose both times. I just turn Floe into an Island and beat with Pet, fast enough that you can't get Visara down in time.

I'm not sure why so many people think they beat me when in fact it's a draw or loss...

Mmmh, you can't do that. Turning into island does not remove from combat. It remains a creature. Even if you answer the activation, the effect is no the stack and it will become a creature. Your only option is to transform it before the main phase and then I can animate the second land.

Halberdier has First Strike, you're doomed if you attack me. First Strike pwns, sometimes. :D
Ahem, after thinking for like... 5 more seconds : yup, it's double draw. *frowns*

Beater going second: Mox, suspend, beater comes down, crack, win.

so yes it's DW (from the order i gave)

Props to Illisius (I'll assume he wins that one)...Rakdos the Defiler is a original choice, and much scarier than Visara or Kodama.

Also, what's it with those Sanctuaries...isn't Energy Field almost always better than that ?

As for my deck, let's just say that Tidal Warrior is no Magus of the Moon although I thought it would be. Also, the format seems to be too fast for playing storage lands now, which would get owned by Warrior.

I'm pretty sure you're joking, but on the off-chance you're not, the deck loses to Unmask/Shoal/Arbor, Workshop/Bridge/Tongs, Vineyard/Tabernacle/Village, Leyline/Isamaru/Karakas, which is the majority of "Tier 1" decks, as well as all sorts of other stuff.

You're right about this, sorry...but I still think I win the games. I can turn Village into an Island during your upkeep, and you can animate the Factory and attack me with it. So both of us take four damage every turn, but I barely win the race on the draw since I deal you four before you deal me four. On the play, I am even faster of course.

Thanks for the props, but I unfortunately must report that I didn't come up with the idea myself. (I did think of Leyline-Karakas, Force-Arbor, and Megaliths-Keg/Field independently (if not first), though, if that's any consolation). And while it probably is better than Visara, Kodama does have many advantages, so that's mainly a metagame decision. Some things which beat Rakdos: Tabernacle, Maze of Ith, Karakas, Swords to Plowshares, Pox, Ensnaring Bridge, Energy Field (played turn one). City-Lotus-Kodama dodges the first half of these.

frolll
10-11-2007, 11:04 AM
Even Plains+Isamaru+StP does beat the Rakdos.dec :o But hey! Illissius will beat us all ont the back of a very very good metagame call, props to him. :)

/damned, why did I not choose to play Drayd/Unmask/Shoal ? :(

Because the people who did that didn't do well last round ?

04. 33 (Reseachers seems broken though...no better Auras ?)

It was down to either this or Mythic Proportions, and ultimately, I chose untargetability and flying over Beef. Maybe I should have chosen beef.

Oh, well. Maybe next time?

Arbor-Unmask-Shoal would have done pretty horribly this time as well, as far as I can tell from skimming the lists. It seems people still have it at the back of their minds even when it's not doing so well (and it doesn't hurt that Wheel of Torture and Megaliths are very strong decks all on their own).

OK, here's my totals, with notes about a couple.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

1. LL
2. WW: Shroud means I can race his Ice Floe for the 5 turns I need to win.
3. LL: I can't race this...
4. --
5. LL: Same as 3.
6. WW
7. LL: this plays out the same as 3 and 5.
8. DD: If he swings with both, I kill the Tidal Warrior, then there's a Pet/Researcher stalemate.
9. LL: Manaburn + stomping trees = pain.
10. DD: He swings, I block, letting 2 trample damage through. Then we both have no permanents.
11. LL: So close...I was about to put this as DD, but then saw that the Halberdier has 1st strike.
12. LL: Predator is hot. That is all.
13. DD: I can't attack, but if Muse does, I kill it.
14. LL
15. WW
16. LL: This one hurt me in the head to figure out. And I still lost.
17. LL
18. LL: Ouch.
19. WL: If I'm on the play, I beat face. If I'm on the draw, I can't play anything.
20. WW: Sanctuary seems like it would be good, but there's hella flyers running around.

Total: 35

I should have used my other choice...I could have raced a little faster.

I'm not joking. And it makes 3/3 against unmask. And my experience in this metagame is still small but it does not look like that they are the "majority" of tier1 decks (unmask shoal arbor is awful for instance).

My deck: Mishra vs. Predator

Trygon Predator
Mishra's Factory
Simic Growth Chamber

If anything is wrong, correct me:

1. LL - 0
2. LL - 0
3. WW - 6
4. DD - 2 (You don't lose here, satellites. I can't swing into a flying 4/4 and you can't swing because otherwise, the Predator would seal the deal.)
5. WW - 6
6. LL - 0
7. WW - 6
8. LL - 0
9. WW - 6
10. LL - 0
11. LL - 0
12. N/A
13. DD - 2
14. LL - 0
15. DD - 2
16. ? (I'm not calculating this - I'm waiting for Belgareth's try on this one)
17. LL - 0
18. LL - 0
19. DD - 2
20. WW - 6

Total points so far: 38

Wow, this was a rather bad meta choice (props to Illissius for his deck).

Yep, the Unmasked Sick Dryad would have fail badly, but alas beats Rakdos deck :D
So... Road to a format ruled by the mighty Megaliths ?

I didn't know Dryad stays 1/1 under Blood Moon, that costs me another point. Also, I mistook Imaginary Pet for something else, thats why I had WW recorded against it -> minus another 3 for a total of 72.

Barook, on the draw you lose to any Processor with more than 3 and less than 12 life paid. With you on the play however, he only gets one token and is never able to race you.

Megaliths can do no better than draw vs. any deck with Sheltered Valley. I think Workshop, Wheel of Torture, Chimeric Idol is still the best deck in the format.

The thing is, Lotus-decks rape Workshop/Wheel/Idol. So it isn't really the best. By the looks of things, the Rakdos-deck is really awesome.

You would be correct.

Wildfire, so it's WL, then? I can live with that.

You can't. Ice Floe must target a creature without flying that's attacking you.

8. DD: If he swings with both, I kill the Tidal Warrior, then there's a Pet/Researcher stalemate.

...which is why I WON'T swing with both, but only with the Pet (as long as researchers is untapped). You can trade, leaving me with a 1/1 and you with nothing, or you can race, which doesn't work because you take five and deal four a turn.

So...2 losses on that, then? If that's the case, I can't win against 2 creatures.

Also, I knew I was reading Ice Floe right...

When's the next round?

Illissius
10-13-2007, 05:19 PM
I added and formatted the decklists for #3, #4, and #5 to the wiki (http://thesource3cb.pbwiki.com/); I don't know how to do the outcomes table, so could someone who does at least make the skeletons for those? We should keep the wiki up to date.

Nihil Credo
10-13-2007, 06:03 PM
I added the new pages and tables; now we only need someone to fill in the results (at least what results were posted).

Illissius
10-13-2007, 07:17 PM
Thanks. I've filled in my own... would do the vertical column as well, but it's a pain in the ass.

If everyone else fills in their own results, we could go back and see what's missing. So, um, please do so.

EDIT -- Disregard all this stuff below and see the next two comments.

How to: click the link (http://thesource3cb.pbwiki.com/), then #3CB #N Outcomes, Edit page, scroll down through the HTML gibberish until you find the number for your deck (23. or whatever), and then put how many points you got for each of your matches in order between each of the following <td></td> pairs, and then your total points in the last one.

So, for example, if your deck was #4 out of 5, and you lost the first match, drew the second, split the third, and won the last, it would look like this:

<td>4.</td> <td>0</td> <td>2</td> <td>3</td> <td>--</td> <td>6</td> <td>11</td> <tr></tr>

Uhm... what HTML gibberish? Are you using the latest Firefox? I am, and the PBWiki editor looks as WYSIWYG as Microsoft Word.

Illissius
10-13-2007, 07:29 PM
Oh, wow. I'm actually using the latest Opera, and it seems pbwiki is retarded. So never mind that, and a word to the Opera users: set it to mask as Firefox in the site preferences.

(So I've filled it in columnwise as well.)

AAArgh! I got busy with the 6 tests in two weeks! You can go ahead, and I can grab #7 for you after that. Unless you are willing to wait until tomorrow.
