View Full Version : [Discussion] Why didn't I buy them then?

I can't stop thinking about this. A couple months ago when people were telling me to buy Tarmogoyf, but the masses hadn't caught on yet, I had a chance to buy foil Tarmogoyfs for 10 dollars a peice and non-foils for $2.50. Now the card's price skyrocketed and now I'm kicking myself in the ass for not buying them earlier. Has this ever happened to you? Discuss and share your thoughts. Peace.

Yea, months ago, I thought that 5 dollar Tarmogoyf were too expensive, so I didn't buy them. I should have brought multiple play sets back then...

I DID buy mine then. I also picked up Resets, Sea Drakes, and Flashes on the cheap, only to sell them when the price was right.

Suckers.

I don't think I really missed out on this one. When they were being touted as Werebear's replacement in Thresh, I immediately picked up multiple playsets. Ebay was ending presales on sets of them for like $0.99-$3.00 and I picked up a bunch there. Around town, people were selling them at around $3 a piece and I was picking them up like crazy. Of course at the time I was trading them away at like $7-8, but then when my friend said one time, "You know these are like $16 now? Apparently they're really good in Standard too." I was shocked.

And now they're like $20. But I didn't miss out on this one, and I feel bad for anyone trying to pick them up. They're absolutely insane.

I once had a chance to pick up some extremely beat duals for 5 bucks a piece, this was back when they were going for at most twenty bucks, and these ones were horribly beat, they had soda spilled on them. Now I know I could easily unload them for twice what I would have paid for them, and would have used them until i got rid of them. Not too bad, but definitely a lost opportunity.

I got my goyf's for 20, which I guess is less than they are now. I could sell my set to SCG for 100 right now, so I'm not complaining.

Fuck Tarmagoyf.

You seem to have some anger issues with Tarmagoyf.

Is this personal or do you hate all Lhurgoyfs?

You should try to work on getting past your hate and you might become a better person.

On topic,
I generally am able to grab Legacy stables pretty cheap (Goyf, Reset, Sea Drakes). For some reason I never buy more than 4 and make a profit though.

Fuck Tarmagoyf.

Looks like someone missed out/ got beat in the face by Goyf/ is highly jealous.

I trade a couple Ball Lightnings and a few other jank card I can't remember for a playset of Goyf. Best trade I have ever made.

I've missed out on a few good deals in my time, but I pegged Tarmogoyf right. I bought them for $3/each from SCG right after the FS pre-release the following Monday morning. If I had been patient and waited for Blackborder.com to sort out their inventory, I could have picked them up for $1.39 each by Wendesday-Thursday. All in all, a good deal.

When did you get Sea Drakes?

Reset was by far the easiest steal of them all, as it didn't skyrocket until well after it became popular. I got my playset for like $8, got rid of them for $100. And thank God my collection consists of Adam Barnello and his foil Tarmogoyfs. I win at life.

Suckers.Seconded.

I got foil goyfs at $5 and regulars for $8 per playset. At one point I had 16 goyfs. Now I just have 3 Foil Chinese goyfs, 4 nonfoil Chinese, and 4 plain ol english ones too.

You really should be kicking yourself, hard, Cavius.

At the beginning I recogniced Tarmogoyf's potential in Legacy but read a Lorwyn review where a well-known author claimed the card wasn't good enough to see play in Standard/ block constructed.
Anyway, I picked up a few copies rightaway and had 5 copies then. Also, I purchased 3 foil copies for $17 shipped which wasn't a bargain back then either.
Unfortunately, I sold all the non-foil copies later on for $10-15 each as I couldn't imagine a further rise of the card price.
A few weeks ago I got my last foil Tarmogoyf for $55 shipped. That wasn't the best possible price but $72 incl. shipping doesn't sound too bad for a foil playset.

Also, I got Resets before the price took off, for $2.99 each from an online store. It was basically to just "test out this new deck called Solidarity".

What still makes me sad is the fact that I didn't complete a playset of Japanese foil Quirion Dryads before the unrestriction of Gush. Now I'm sitting on 6 foil Dryads (2 Japanese, 2 Chinese, 1 German, 1 English) that I got between $3 (for English) and $14 each (for Japanese) but I still have to shell out at least $150 for the two missing Japanese ones (probably more considering that a playset recently sold for roughly $475).

Goyf by all accounts is one of those "one in a million" cards. This creature never should have seen the light of day, let alone at it's current incarnation. Anyone expecting this thing to not do well in any format that has an attack step is downright retarded.

As for me, they were already hitting $6-8 before I even noticed what the card did (didn't bother with Future Sight, because it was right after I folded my website from PC sales being atrocious). When I could finally afford to get some, they were already hitting $15. This is USUALLY when the price of good creatures stop, and $15-20 is a damn good price for a chase rare creature. I never would have expected them to hit $30-40. I don't think anybody else did either.

All in all, I can't say I'm kicking myself over it. I've had my share of good days, and my share of missed opportunities. Dwelling on the opportunities keeps you blind of the new ones coming along.

I picked up Sea Drakes for about $3 each. That was a pretty good buy.

I made an order online right before Future Sight came out. I was playing in a tournament soon thereafter, so I needed the cards quickly. I took my set of pre-order Goyfs out of the shopping cart and went to checkout so I could have my Counterbalances sooner. Major frowns.

I recently (read: last week) picked up an set of S-Chinese Tarmogoyfs for $120. I was pretty happy with that, considering English ones cost around that now.

Yeah, I had no idea tarmogoyfs are so expensive now.

I got a set for like 30~. I dont know exactly how much though since it's older than ebay keeps track.

I got my Tarmogoyfs for 6 dollars for the playset in the beginning of June.

Thanks eBay BIN.

I unfortunatley went down swinging after my Sea Drakes- I got one for absolutely nothing (I think I traded someone a Limited Resources for it), found a guy selling a huge lot of portal 2 for 40 bucks, bought it on the spot, and turned out to have two Drakes in it. I just bought the last one for 30 because I'm not patient at all and wanted the playset.

So I paid around 70 for the set of Sea Drakes. Not bad, but not fantastic either.

The best one of these I can remember is this:

Before Imperial Seal (and with it Portal) was legalized, there were indications that it would be so. As a result, Josh Reynolds bought upwards of 30 of them... at $20 apiece.

Yes, he has since sold his I-Seals for many multiples of that outlay.

I bought Sea Drakes and Resets before they took off, and then promptly sold them for more than 10 times the amount I bought them for in total.

Goyf I didn't get quite as lucky, but 50$ for a playset is infinitely better than 100+.

You know, I REALLY want to sell mine and make some cash. It's too bad that I actually use them and need them for a deck.

Still... whatever.

I realized he was really good right off the bat, but I failed to get any at the prerelease, and didn't buy some later because I figured they were too expensive at the time (read $6-8 apiece), and I figured I'd get some later.

Fuck me.

I thought the card would be bad in standard but good elsewhere, and thus not rise above about $6. Which is why I have three Goyfs now and not four :<

Goyf = Rediculous in all non-T1 constructed formats.

Well, it was good in a deck that was DOMINATING T2 and block, and a raging ass-kicker in Extended. But that wasn't my point.

I was wondering what the top market-dollar for Ravager was at the height of its popularity?

When Future Sight was produced, I win multiple auctions for bridge from below and tarmogoyf foil and not. For example playset of bridges or tarmogoyf: 4€.

Now I have only the last bridge. I sell ALL and I think I give an extras of 100-150€. Lucky? Uhm...I don't think...I see some recensions for example from tcgplayer for these cards. When I read them I see that the author understimates tarmo and bridge for me (the first for legacy I think, and the second for vintage) so I buy an huge quantity of these cards.

I do the same now for mirror entity. The new natuko shade.

Once FS was released, I was the first to complete my playset (I was going to build Red Thresh then). All of the guys were looking at me like "Tarma-wha?"

At that same week (Goyfs were I believe less than a $1 each), I traded them for a set of Xantid Swarm and $2.

Made me quit Legacy (well, at least in real life).

Well, thanks to you, Sourcers, I've burrowed a playset of Goyfs early (Mainly 'cause they were better Werebears) for 10€.

But I remember back in '96 when I had the opportunity to buy a MTG card lot with 10 or so BB French Revised Duals for 7-8€ each...

...then I trade all of them for Savannah Lions, Geddons and Birds for my Ernham-Geddon deck which makes me an happy T2 player.

Now, I'm a sad Legacy player with an outdated deck. :'(

I think some speculation on what will rise and fall in value in the Lorwyn set would be great. For starters, do you feel Gaddock Teeg will go up or down? Thoughtseize is another to look at, but I think it will be one of the cards that will drop in value. Not much maybe, but its just not the bomb in Standard that it is in Legacy.

So far my big triumphs money wise.

4x Sea Drake $2.00 (pre GP Columbus)
4x tarmogoyf $14.00 (plus $2 shipping)
4x Foil Tarmogoyf $20.00 (2 from auctions on Ebay 2 from a store. Plus around $6 in shipping charges)

We sold out at Valencia with some going at 25 Euro and most at 23. And by sold out I mean we literally had 50. We almost couldn't close the case. For the laymen, 25 Euro is about $33-34+ depending on exchange.
