Here's a quick little eBay story:

In an attempt to buy Goyfs, I put a little of my collection on eBay.

I set this gem (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230184354635&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=013) at a rather modest BIN. I was quite disappointed when someone bid on it - .90 cents - but, in retrospect, I'd like to shake that person's hand. Not to be coy, but the original BIN was nowhere close to $50.

You always screw me on my old Signed/Altered cards. First it was the 'King of All Fatties' Verdant force at Big Arse I (or 2? Can't remember) and now this. I believe I valued this at like 10 bucks in a trade when you were trying to pimp out dragon. ROFL

PS.. Told you this thing would fucking sell good. At least it will go to your Goyfs so I don't have to hear bitching anymore.

My favorite was the 3 people that got into a bidding war over 4 Heart Slivers when it was announced that Slivers were back in Time Spiral. I had 3 sets, and proceeded to ask the next 2 highest bidders if they'd like to purchase the playsets for their final bidding price since I had the extras. Their final bid prices? $10, $9, $7.50.

Wait, I don't get it. Someone Bid on this INSTEAD of hitting the cheaper Buy It Now? Can you even do that?

freakish777
10-25-2007, 01:50 PM
There's an option to have both Buy It Now, and a normal auction. The Buy It Now disappears to buyers after the first bid has been placed (this is how eBay originally imagined would be good, you could "play" the auction scene and either attempt to get a good deal by bidding low but risk being outbid and kick yourself later for not using the BIN option, it basically made auctions even more like a game and more addicting which it was way back in the day when there wasn't any BIN option).

Then they realized they should just let people set prices, since selling goods and taking a commission is good now matter how you do it.

Weird, I only saw your whole message after I quoted it. Anyway, didn't it work a bit differently for a while? If there was a BIN price, you could pay that price until the bid went above that? Or am I making that up?

Anyway, P_R, would you mind sharing with us what the BIN for this was?

phpBB systems have a little nuance in them where if you edit within 1 minute or so, it doesn't display that you've editted your message in the italics at the bottem.

If you could still see the BIN price after bidding had started on it why would anyone ever bid higher than that price if it was still available?

Random Ebayer:
I could BIN for 14.99 but I would rather bid 16 for it, since I like spending more money on things.

As far as I remembered, you couldn't. eBay simply wouldn't let you. So if you put a BIN price on something, that was the maximum it could ever sell for. I guess I am just mistaken. That's why I was so confused.

I had this happen to me once. I was selling a Video Navigation unit for a car abd set the BIN @ $799.99 it ended up selling fo $1296.51. BIN goes away as soon as someone bids on the item, most sellers set the BIN way to high. Once and a while you can find a good BIN deal though.

The BIN system went over a number of changes to get to where it currently is. The order of the second and third might be reversed, I'm not sure when I was dealing on eBay when I noticed the changes through BIN options, I just know I went through all of these changes at one point or another.

First incarnation: The BIN option disappears if ANYBODY bids the item past it's starting point (meaning the second bid)

Second: BIN would stick around until the bid war was 1 bid increment short of it, then it would leave. This one lasted for a shot while, but then people just stopped caring.

Third: BIN option stuck around until the bid met or exceeded the BIN, in which it would just automatically go back to regular auction.

Fourth: BIN with OBO (or best offer) was created. This split the BIN function to act like a seperate auction, you couldn't put a bid price lower than the BIN, but if you did, it'd act as a BO. You can also do a "standard" auction with BIN, though I don't know how it works anymore if people bid on it at it's starting (not BIN) price (example BIN $50 starting bid $.99). This is what they currently have.

I'm liking the idea of a BIN/OBO offer system, because then you don't have to worry about people trying to undercut your price, but they can still offer and see if you'll take it. It's pretty fair for all involved.

EDIT: Oh and anything usually modded by T. Nielsen now goes for a damn good amount. A buddy of mine was saying she's charging about $10-15 for the ink modifications now, just because of how popular she became after people saw her full-colored alt FoWs. It's the same for a lot of artists that charge to do mods, and for popular ones that don't. A friend recently got a $50 offer for an artist proof that had an RK Post inked Cthulu face on the back, and got $40 in trade at a store from a Giancola Island that was modded with an angel in the lightning.

So ya, if you have any big-name modded cards, be sure to charge high for them. Chances are, it's what people will pay.

Lol, I can't deny it. But I do have a valid reason, getting married can be expensive so instead of just quitting magic I'll just sell my pimp and replace it with white bordered cards. Also, for those interested when I get home from class tonight I'll take pics and create a "selling pimp" thread.

Traditionally, the woman's family pays for the wedding and the husband pays for the honeymoon.

Don't sell your cards, make The Mana Leak Open 4 your honeymoon.

2 Wasteland
4 UG Island

This has got to ba a scam. Please read his info. Talks about these 1 of 2 auctions, but I don't see the second one at all. He is making a shit ton of money like 100 bucks for a playset of Goyfs that will probably end up being 4 jank rares. Also, who would have an auction for 4 Beta Time Walks? I suggest no one bid on his stuff. I also asked if he had any actual pictures of his collection. No reply yet.

Bid on the Walks. 12 hours left, I put a pretty low max bid, if their fake I won't be out much for very good looking proxies.

Oh no, you're reading it right, just misinterperting it.

He means that you bid and if you win, he has 2 lots that he will "randomly" choose from. 1 of Beta bayous, and 1 of rnadom Black, Silver, and Gold symbols or foils... He'll randomly select the lot of 4 cards and then after paying he'll send you either some really cheap and probably fake bayous, or some insanely overpriced dime rares.

A quote for clarification:

This auction is for 1 of 2 lots (yes, 1 of 2 lots giving you a 50% chance of winning) in which 1 lot will contain the 4 MTG - Beta - Mox Emerald (VERY MINT), the other will contain 3 randomly inserted cards the have black, silver and gold icons on them, foil cards and all other cards affiliated with the game.

So I get a 50% chance of winning something I already won? How can I lose?

And I love how he says '3 "randomly" inserted cards that have black, sliver, and gold icons on them'. Yeah, you'll get 3 random cards that might be common or uncommon. I'm sure glad I payed $150 for that Chimney Imp, Norin the Wary, Soaring Hope combo? Neato!

Seriously, this guy needs to have something horrible happen to his nuts.

I don't really think he even has the cards.

I looked throught his inventory, and saw he had signed beta Serra Angels.

I was outbid, (my max was 40), and then after clicking on the link, IMMEDIATELY went to the "Auction not found, invalid" page. So basically either:

1) this guy is caught in a total scam (kinda hard to believe with a damn near flawless feedback, but it happens, especially if hacked)

or

2) he cancelled the auction entirely because it didn't go for nearly enough, and was actually legitimate

Either or, I'm not worried. Had I been out $40, I would have simply contacted Paypal and told them exactly what they want to hear to refund the money. Going through as many transactions as I have, I know exactly what to say now :D

EDIT: Read the follow up email from Ebay. They cut the auction itself, and I'm sure a few others that have ended. I also noticed that I NEVER saw the writing for the 1 of 2 like you all did, until I went over the whole thing via "select all" option. I think that in itself was enough to get the auction taken down, as people seemed to have read it wrong (like I originally did).

I was honestly surprised when I noticed that the Ancestrals only hit $100, and the Walks barely pushed $50, then realized that this is another of those perfect scams, because you can't prove he doesn't have the cards if he ships out one batch of "insane" rares that gets on his feedback (like the foil chrome moxes, or 4x Library, etc).
