Does Undertaker Need a target?

Can I discard a card with undertaker without having a creature in my graveyard to return? I'm uncertain becuase it says "target". Thanks

I'm pretty sure you do need a dude in your graveyard already. You announce the activation of the ability (which involves choosing the target or targets), then pay the costs.

So no, you would not be able to discard a creature and return that same creature if you wanted to for some reason
