View Full Version : [Tournament] Set Wars I?

I was considering running a non-sanctioned tournament where the idea would be to build an entire deck from only one set in Magic of your choice and go to war with it.
1. You may only use cards from that set.
2. Reprints would be considered illegal as everything must maintain the set's logo.
3. Basic lands may only derive from the ten core sets.
If I were to hold a tournament for some highly playable cards as prizes (in play-set form - all cash cards) at say, a 5 dollar entry fee - would you consider participating in the very first Set Wars?
If you hold it online I would...

I would probably be down, that is if this tournament were within 1 state of Ohio.

It would be held in Syracuse, NY.
EDIT: Prizes would include dual lands.

I would play in this tournament. It would be a lot of fun to build a deck based on one set. Just give us the details if you decide to hold an event like this. I know when can get a good number of players just from Syracuse alone if the prizes are good.

At the risk of spoiling some of the fun, you should take a look at the Battle of the Sets series at Salvation for tech. The best sets, from memory, are Antiquities, Torment, Apocalypse, Urza's Saga, Mirrodin, and Darksteel.

Antiquites are incredibly powerful as long as one gets the Workshops. If not, the set kinda falls flat on its face. All the others are affordable though and they're all pretty darn mean.

Sounds awesome. I could design for this event but I think someone else would have to play since I doubt I will go to Syracuse.

If you could get ahold of Ed Paltzik then he'd probably have some guidelines :p.

Do you have a link for this, for some reason I can't find any info on it?
Would there be a banned list or anything? Like, can Legends play with Drains, Antiquities with Workshops, etc.

Just search for "Battle of the Sets" in the Article search on Salvation.

They're also fucking enjoyable articles on their own right. That's the sort of casual play Spikes like me can get behind: make up some interesting restriction on deckbuilding, then find the best possible list.

Why would reprints be illegal? Shouldn't matter as long as they were in the set at some point. Lifting this rule may make it easier for some people to play, you may get get some newer players who don't own some of the older sets to show up.

Because the tournament itself is supposed to be flavorful - most of the cards that were reprints aren't very expensive anyways. You play a deck from Mirage - you may only use Mirage cards.
There is no banned or restricted list. If you think your set is good enough to win - plan around Antiquities or Arabian Nights' powerhouse cards.

Some time back I scanned the first Inquest BOS. Some of you might like it:

I have this Inquest - and it was actually what inspired me to create this tournament - classic.
