3CB #9 is open for entries! Congratulations to PaleMoonFTW and Sacul Kamadaka, winners of 3CB #8! The field was very, very close together -- there was a three way tie at second, only two points behind the tie at first.

I'm experimenting with some changes to the banned list this week, so give it a try. The following cards are unbanned:

-- What is 3CB? --

3CB, which stands for Three Card Blind, is a unique format of Magic play, quite unlike any other; sort of like a very (very, very -- in the way a government bureaucracy is an advanced form of a pickpocket --) advanced form of Rock, Paper, Scissors. As per the name, you have three cards, of your own choosing. They are your deck and your hand. Your opponent also has three cards. All normally hidden information is visible to both players, and nothing happens randomly, so the optimal play for each player is always known -- meaning you don't actually play any Magic, per se. You submit a deck, so does everyone else, and all outcomes (all decks versus all other decks) are determined deterministically, usually by a moderator, or (as we do here) group effort. Unless you can break the format in half, it often comes down to metagaming.


-- Rules of 3CB --

Your deck is composed of 3 cards which all start in your hand.
Your library contains 0 cards and you don’t have a sideboard nor own any cards outside of the game. (Wishes fetch nothing.)
Random effects always go in your opponent's favor. (This includes Chaos Orb and Falling Star. If controllership of something with random effects changes, they go in favor of the player who doesn't own it.)
You can see your opponent's hand, so you make the best possible play. (If both players' taking an action would cause that player to lose the game, then neither player takes any action, and the game is a draw.)
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card. (If cards are put in your library, you draw them as normal. Effects which require you to skip a draw work as normal.)
You play each opponent twice; once going first and once going second.
For each win, you score 3 points.
For each draw, you score 1 point.
For each loss, you score 0 points.

Three rules restrict the kind of deck you can send. They are:
1. You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
2. You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than one card from his or her hand in a single turn.
3. You may not submit a deck that uses a card on the 3CB banned list.

Other than the aforementioned, everything is handled exactly like a real game of Magic.

Yeah, I was about to unban Coercion and Pulse as well going off the "well, if Unmask isn't a problem, mise well" theory, but then I came to my senses. It's nearly (but not quite) impossible to win against first turn Coercion when going second.

Also considered Voidstone Gargoyle, but City-Lotus-Gargoyle seemed too strong, on reflection. About the only thing which reliably beats it going second is Leyline-Karakas (and only because you can't name lands with Gargoyle). Even Maze of Ith only draws.

Mage, Squire, and co were unbanned because they suck. Relatively speaking. I don't think any of them are better than Unmask-Shoal-Arbor, which at least has a chance going second, and that has proven to be nonthreatening (contrary to my expectations, I admit). Looking at their results so far, they seem to be decidedly not dominating at all.

@Mordekain/Andros/georgjorge/Jade, the player on the play wins. When you're on the play it's obvious. When I'm on the play we start at 19 life (Smallpox, you pitch Meddling Mage). You play Leonin and burn to 18. My guy goes to 4 counters. You attack me to 17. 3 counters. You attack, 15. 2 counters. You attack, 13. 1 Counter. You attack, 11. My guy unsuspends with Haste, I attack, you're at 15. You attack, I'm at 9. You 12. Me 7. You 9. Me 5. You 6. Me 3. You 3. Me 1. You zero.

@Illisius... I think we draw both games, you get to stick with Tabernacle no matter what I do, but can never produce guys.

@Sacearuse, when I'm on the play, you pitch Factory to Smallpox, and Swords my guy. On the draw, you have to pass the turn (if you play any cards I win).

@etrigan, if you play your land I win, if you don't you can force the draw with Swords, if you could win, I can just wait for you to play your land first.

@Spatula, we can both force draws.

Total 52 points. Managing draws against the 2 Ninety+ pointers is kinda fun, but I think it's safe to say that Tabernacle and either Leyline or Karakas should probably go (Karakas has more potential for abuse).

By "should probably go", you mean get banned? That's crazy talk. Both Leyline-Karakas and Tabernacle decks have been around since forever (well, since Leyline was printed in that case), and have never been anything more than good, but fair decks. They lose pretty badly to the Energy Field deck, for just one example, which in turn loses to all the Meddling Mage decks. It's all in the metagame.

Reading comprehension FTL. I thought Purity worked on all damage, not just from spells and abilities. Only came into play in a couple of matches though. I would have been slightly better of stealing the MTGSalvation tech of Dread, though still only slightly better. Lotus-Lotus-Fatty is a pretty bad metagame choice right now.

Gambit: How do you W-L against my second deck? It seems either WW or LL for one thing, and I'm pretty sure I win. (I do this by not playing Tabernacle or blocking the Site, just racing with tokens. And if you stay back to block, I just build an army and eventually alpha strike.)

etrigan: I think you have two results wrong. In purity vs flash, if you go first you drop purity. Then I drop seven 1/1:s. You hit for six, I hit for seven. You hit for six, I hit for seven. You hit for six, I hit for seven and you die. I'll be at 1 because of the man burn. You can't stay back and block either. The truth seeker vs grand arbiter match ends in a WD, when you are on the play you have just enough time to swords my arbiter and land the creature for a draw.
