View Full Version : Which Type Of Deck Do You Play Best?

I figure I start a thread to get to know people's preferences and play styles a bit. I'm going to break it down into three catergories obviously, 'combo', 'control' and 'aggro'. Which one do you play best? I figured I'd let you know my play style to start off this thread. I totally suck at playing aggro. Too many combat decisions boggles my mind. I'm a much better combo and control player. I make better decisions and it comes easier to me playing those two types. I excel at combo so I guess I would have to say, that's my favorite type of deck to play, control being a close second. Now let me know what you excel in and what type of play style you lean towards.

Prison/Lockdown and Control. I do a lot of stupid stuff when it comes to Aggro and Combo, but I am reliable behind a slow dominating deck.

Control. I absolutely love being able to say 'no' to people. And when I get control of the board, I am just in the fucking zone, chief. Nobody can stop me at that point. And I also love looking into the flustered eyes of my opponent when he knows he can't win.

Aggro-control like zoo, various GBw builds, and stuff like that. I've never really tried combo, and I'm too poor to buy blue duals, so my preference is a little limited. I'll really play anything though, just not well.

When I was young and anxious I played aggro, a lot. And I guess I was pretty good at it (do you even need skill to play aggro? [/sarcasm]).
Nowadays, when I really started playing Legacy, control.decs have been my choices, especially Landstills. I love FoW and StoP, they're just too good. I can also pilot combo, but sometimes my calculations get screwed and after an Infernal Tutor strange things can happen: "Dark Confidant, 1 burn, go".

I am very good at playing combo decks and true aggro decks. I play them to damn near perfection.
When it comes to prison decks and aggro/control decks like thresh I will do fine, but I don't play them enough to have mastered them.
Tempo decks and blue based control decks are beyond me though. I cannot play the u/g decks that are in t2 right now or anything like dralnu or tog all that well. I just don't know when to tap out and what not. I have punted way too many games with control decks to ever play one again.

i prefer black based aggro-control decks like deadguy ale and variants becasue it has many answers, can kill fast if you want too but can be very disrutpive and controllish too. after that i prefer cool control decks like enchantress, rifter, and other of this kind of decks and i liek some combo decks like tes and gamekeeper salvagers too.
I suck with every kind of deck! And you can do it too, isn't that cool?
No, seriously, I think I can play NQGw the best of all my decks. I could say the same thing about Ichorid and Breakfast, but they are stupid autopilots that don't require a lot of skill.

My favourite type of deck is control-combo (I guess this includes white Stax as locking down your opponent, especially after an Armageddon feels like playing a combo finish). So because I almost always play these kinds of decks at tournaments I'd say that I can play them the best out of all the different archetypes. However because my playstyle is often very aggressive (for example when given the option between morphing Exalted or playing a lock piece I'll almost always go for the Angel) I also feel comfortable playing various Stompy decks (most notably Dragon Stompy).

Combo-Control would be breakfast (or the closest thing to it) or Aluren.

Aggro-Control. I am best when I am racing against an opponent that I am trying to hold out of the game. RGBSA and UGW Thresh are where I play my best. I have Affinity and Landstill and Belcher here, but I often end up in a mindset of not being able to win, because I don't see all of the available options or ways for me to win.

Hrm. This is tough. For a long, long time I was known as the control guy in Syracuse. I was playing some sort of blue based control in almost every format (except for that six month stint of Mono White). I was good at it, too. Then I picked up Goblins.
I'd honestly have to say I play blue based control, board control, and mid-range aggro decks with the same amount of skill.

Prison-Combo, specifically Flame Vault Stasis Stax and the newest Sun Tower list. After that, probably storm combo.

Aggro-control with a lot of proactive options and permanent mechanisms in play. I'm weakest on sifting mechanisms where I'm looking for a solution or combo. The ideal deck type for me is an aggro-control where the solution emerges naturally as I play out the draw.
In the old days I played a lot of BRW with fast creatures and instant removal followed by Armageddon. That worked very well until the more sophisticated control shells came into play and then it was DoA.
The second deck that I won a lot with was a BGu landkill that included blue for the power and Energy Flux. It finished very well in every tournament I took it to, including some 512+'s.

Aggro-control all the way. I almost always play Chalice Aggro in Legacy (mostly Faerie Stompy) and I play 9-sphere Workshop Aggro in Vintage. I guess I just like being able to beat down with big dudes wielding SoFI's while my opponent sits back, unable to play spells.

Combo.
It has a lot of upsides: many times you don't need to even look at what your opponent is doing, some times you can even never look at his face.
I'm quite good with Combo-Control and pure aggro too.
I just suck hard with Aggrocontrol, Control and Prison.

I'll play anything that I think could be fun and/ or good.
This Block constructed season I played three PTQs, one with G-W-Aggro, one with Teachings and the third one with Wild Pair Slivers.
In Legacy my cardpool allows me to play nearly anything I want and in my last five tournaments I played:
- U-R Landstill
- Tarmo-Tog (controllish version with only Goyfs + 1 Tog as beaters)
- Survival (based on Tao's)
- Mono-U-Control
- Solidarity
The only thing I rarely do is to play the same deck more than two times in a row, I always need something new.
However the most fun I've always had with extremely complex combodecks, so I would call those my favourites.

Aggro. Give me Affinity and I'll be right at home. Give me RDW and you'll find yourself at 0 just on the critical turn. Give me Faerie Stompy...
But to lesser extent, also control and aggro/control. I love sitting in the sticks of MUC, since I get so much more to choose, and I get to decide which threats are really threats, what I can solve through non-counter means and so on. I wouldn't touch board control with a 10-foot pole though (although I did have my time with Rifter due to my affinity with white control in Onslaught - that's in the past though).
I can't claim to be good with combo though; I haven't upkept those skills and the last time I really played anything combo was 3 years ago in Vintage.

I am best at running decks that run ridiculously powerful 2-mana enchantments.
This includes decks packing Survival, Standstill, Counterbalance, and used to include Lightning Rift.

I find aggro easiest to play, but i am mostly a control player...or combo/control if there's a decent deck available... :)
All over i'd say that i can play most deck types pretty well.

I love to play deck that don't require a lot of thought, Burn or some kind of aggro deck works best for me. I also love to play Aluren, I played it back when it was first discovered and still play it now.
I enjoy playing Combo and Aggro-Control, but if I'm in a tournament I'm most comfortable going to your throat and playing as aggressive as possible.
I can't play full blown dedicated control to save my life.

Is this a joke? I can't tell if this is a joke.
I play Aggro-Control best (especially these little one-armed dudes I tried out once). I hate having no control at all (a la straight-up Aggro), but I hate sitting on my ass going 'draw go' until my opponent does something so I can answer it. Having complete control of the game is the nut high, don't get me wrong, but getting there is just so boring. So being able to control the game just long enough to beat face is a nice balance for me.
I also like playing combo, because I like math. Also it gives me time to grab lunch.

I tend to play aggro-control the best, although i do alright with everything really. Nothing better than beating face and at the same time give your opponent the finger and yell no.

Aggro-Control and Control. I basically suck at combo, and can play aggro somewhat competently, though I don't enjoy it. Threshold/Madness and Landstill/MUC are where it's at.
I'm good with decks that are so good they cover up my play errors.

I like a couple of things, as I think about it.
First, being able to topdeck something like Burning Wish, Survival, Sword of Fire and Ice, Indrik Stomphowler, Flametongue Kavu, and even to a lesser extent Tarmogoyf is sweet. Winning a topdeck war with savage cards is awesome.
Second, the main reason I don't play Landstill is that I do not have the endurance to play to time, and then through twenty minutes of extra turns, every round. I need to be done with all three games, have time to go watch some other games, get up, stretch, get a drink, etc. between rounds. Playing such a skill-intensive deck for that long straight is just brutal.

I tend to play Combo and Control the best, as I absolutely hate aggro and have never been particularly good at playing it.
Usually I make good decisions when playing decks like Grim Iggy, or Long variants, and I can play through hate decently well most of the time (assuming my deck is built for it). Control I usually just test a lot, so I get familiar with it and am therefore able to make solid decisions when piloting decks like Landstill or MUC.

Funny thing is that play style also influences the types of decks you build best. I know a Vintage player who just played T1T before and after the Gush fiasco. I talked to him about deckbuilding and play style one day and he made himself as an example of a player who just plays slow decks, so he builds his decks and prefers them to be slowed down. Examples would be his T1T lists and his many TPS lists that structure around building card quality and disrupting before "comboing," so basically, he built a Storm combo deck utilizing the "Oath" philosophy which can prove being slow usually.
As for my play style, I have always played Aggro-Control, Midgame, Combo-Control, Control-Combo, and Control decks. I always loved playing controllish decks. I believe that playing control decks offer you lots of options, and those options can turn into rewards rather than mistakes if you make great decisions a majority of the time. Control also allows me to be flexible as well. The deck I probably missed the most that truly defined my playing style was Meandeck Gifts. It took me 5.5 months of practice before the restriction. I thought I was better at it than many others in my area. I learned the best times to cast Recall, fetch protection, and cast my bombs. Only deck I couldnt beat was Manaless Ichorid, but it's nothing the SB couldnt fix.
I cant play combo right and I cant play aggro right. Combo was hard for me to make decisions with because the mistakes in combo are usually cased by my lack of discipline and my fast-playing tendencies (Reasons why I can play Landstill within the 45-50 min gap). Aggro just seemed narrow to me, and obviously Vial Goblins doesnt count, since it was a good deck for me. An exception might be Affinity, because I played it a lot in T2, so I know that deck well.

Although I love playing Solidarity and Faerie Stompy, I feel most comfortable playing Control-Decks. My favourite one is RW-Rifter. Humility neglects the necessity to recalculate Tarmogoyf's P/T each turn and to decide which threat to deal with first.

Eh, this is mainly the reason I don't play aggro. It's boring, inconsistent, and unexciting to me. However, the deck I probably play the best is Survival. Sure it's an aggro deck at first glance, but I enjoy the engine and toolbox approaches. As for playing better cards, that's why I picked up Burning Tog. I enjoy the most: skull-crushing unfun control decks, and any sort of combo. However, I suck at Magic, so the point is moot.

I usually like to play Aggressive deck b/c it forces my opponents into mistakes more times then not.
Also, depending on the format I play the deck that will give me the best opportunity to win in the current metagame. I've play many control decks in standard over the years.
I'm a rather well-rounded player and enjoy playing all archtypes and play them well, and combo is my favorite, although Storm combo is incidentally my weakest point as I have the least amount of experience playing it (but played Desire in T2 and Extended).

I love aggro and do the best with it. I am pretty good with aggro/control and combo as well. I am decent with control but I lack the patience to play them.
For the people who are not good with aggro, how do you do in limited? Almost every deck fits aggro as an archtype, it is tough to build any other deck type. One of my friends is terrible at turning guys sideways, like only swings if he can win.

But on the other hand I love designing and tuuning combo deck, but I hate playing them...

I don't play Legacy that often, but when I do I almost invariably play Landstill or Survival. I like having options and being able to control the pace of the game. I hate aggro and aggro-control. In Extended (the format I play most often) I usually play Heartbeat or UR Tron.
So, combo-control, control or occasionally midrange.

Pure aggro would be perfect, but not having answers to stop other decks is quite painfull, so... Aggro-control.
And rogue decks. Any of them. Aggro, Control, Combo, it doesn't matter. It is SO funny to play decks no one has ever seen and do not find SB hate against your deck.

Combo or Metagame-mashers. I have a soft spot in my heart for things like Deadguy Ale and Ankh Sligh. But none of them match up to the sheer insanity of things like SX Tendrils, Dragon, IGGy Pop, and Masturbation style decks.
Other than that, I've been known to go into Aggro Control and full on Control territories if needed. I'm willing to play BBS, GAT, Thresh, Fish, and anything in between. I'm huge on keeping an eye on the metagame, and having options between many friends willing to lend out cards is a great help with that.
Know your enemies strength as well as your own weaknesses.
