1999: I was in Virginia passing through on the way to Tennessee. Just before we got on the Skyline Drive my girlfriend decided to stop at a little strip mall off the highway to get some supplies. She went into the convenience store and I decided to look at the Wholesale place on the corner. It was one of those shops that sells the stock of bankrupt merchants.

Anyway I was poking around in there and one of the corners was filled with the detritus of a hobby store's demise. The thing that caught my eye was a stand of Jyhad booster boxes on sale for $3 apiece. I was still playing Jyhad at the time so I scooped up like 5 of them and was about to head for the register. I looked up briefly and caught a glimpse of a brown Magic display box on a top shelf. I went and got the ladder and lo and behold 3 brown booster boxes were tagged for $10 a pop. I figured at that price I kind of had to buy them so I scooped them up also and paid my $45 at the register for 8 boxes of cards.

That night as we were lying in bed at the Tally Ho Motel in Townsend my girlfriend and I (she was a huge fan of Magic) started cracking boosters. The first booster she opened made her gasp. I asked what was up and she showed me a Cyclopean Tomb. I realized at the same moment that I was holding an Unlimited booster. We cracked the rest of that box and got a Black Lotus and a Mox Emerald, among other things. We kept the other two boxes sealed.

My $30 turned into $3600 cash a year later when I sold the two booster boxes for $1800 apiece. Of course If I'd held them I'd have made a lot more than that.

If I'd realized what they were we wouldn't have cracked any of them. They were worth much more as an unopened box than anything else. Even then we should have stopped cracking boosters after the first one. It was vacation, we were looking to have some fun. :)

Ive havent made any realy good trades but i have made a ton of bad ones. At the dissension prerelease is when i first started playing competitive magic. I had no idea of the expensive cards in the set and the only preperation was looking at the spoilers on wizards.com. I had pulled the R/w and B/g rav duals in my sealed deck and didnt use either in my deck. After round 2 some random guy walks up and asks to trade. I saw a expirement kraj in his trade binder and at the time i thought it was broken. I offered both duals and another rare for it and for it and a crap rare. About a month later i realized what it was worth and kicked myself

Well the first one was even, at the time of the pre-release that is. Tarmogoyf was like $3.00 when it first came out ($7.00 foil). The Duals were like $10-$12 day of release and Mirror Entity was like $5.00, didn't realy make out there. Oh, and the Mind's Desires vs my Ink Eyes was during the Tooth and Nail Regionals season, for whoever was curious. The Desires were going for .33 each in non-foil, so I told him that $2.50 each would be pretty fair. Turned them around for about $40 a few months back, even though I really wanted to complete the TEPS deck I was working on in all foil.

A few months ago we had the fnm draft cancelled so we decided to draft wow instead telling everyone who hadnt played before it was very easy to learn. Anyway someone pulls the turtle mount loot card. He knows about loot cards but has no idea what its worth. Anyway someone convinces him its the crappiest loot card around and he decided he wants to trade it for 3 packs. I offer him 4 and then the other guy offers 5. Instead of getting into a bid war that would possibly make the guy realize its not a 15 dollar loot card and is actually worth 150 I offer im 4 terravores I know he had been looking for. Boom, done deal. Next weekend at a ptq I dump the turtle for 4 trops and 4 volcanics.

@gambit: unless you are refering to Karma, not true. The kid that I got the Grim Tutor from searched it online later than night :eek:. He told me that he should have known better when I jumped at a Grim Tutor and an Ichorid (also part of the trade, amongst a Cetavolver and other things) when I've always said that tutors only have a home in combo decks while I've never run combo, and told me that I was lucky to have seen it :cool:.

There was a point where I would go to ptq's and regionals just to trade. It was so profitable. At the start you overvalue everything people need because they can't play without it, then you pick up cards people want to get rid of to build a new deck. I would also bring around tons of uncommons. Back when ichorid exploded in extended I think i traded 20 cabal therapies at 10 each one day.

More recently at regionals I just flipped shocks to no end. Picked them up at 5-7 and got rid of them at 9-10.

Nowadays I dont even bother with the small trades. I just find people who want big cards. Its a lot less work and the result is still great. If you can get rid of t2/ext junk easily just trade unl power 9 down. You can easily overvalue your power by $100 or more and undervalue everything by a solid 25 percent. This used to be even better before the internet became a place of trading/buyign/selling cards.

Worked for Wizard's retail chain for a few years running tournaments and I've seen more than my fair share of nasty uneven trades. Usually I was very nice since the cards were easy for me to get (trades like Cunning Wish for 4x River Boa). All of my power and my huge old Extended/Legacy collection come from just being around so many players all the time and spotting a deal. My personal best from one of the older players:

I bought like 19 packs of Starter 99' like a year ago for $4 something a pack. I pulled a Grim Tutor, nuff said. I then traded the tutor for a couple FoW's, some duals and other staple stuff.

While it's not "teh 3p1c0rzz" like a 5 dollar Grim Tutor (it was more like a list price Ichorid with a few free rares and a free Grim Tutor), I got a $3 Polluted Delta a week later. Right after I got the card in my hand and he had the money, my friend says aloud "dude, that was a $20 card, at least!!". The kid I just traded blurts out this little bit of wisdom "Pshaw, I don't care, I just got $3!". Just another testament to the extreme ignorance in the educational system...

I think i made the best trade ever but at a time when it wasn't so bad. At the first ever magic tournament in Carousel Mall I swapped my Basalt monolith for a Black lotus which I then turned around and traded for 5 regrowths. yeah green spells. At the time I felt like a genius and who knew that the lotus woudl go on to be so valuable.. coincidentaly I never owned a lotus again. i also swapped a chaos orb for 18 basic land but that aint as bad..

My dealing days are long over. I used to deal because I was soo bad at playing, but the upside was that the few years of dealing payed for what will be a full set of beta power, fbb blue duals, all the foils I need ect. Here is a great trade I made.
