I knew they were making commercials and stuff now, but COME ON. Can we look any more nerdy? Hey WotC - less Magic commercial, more beer commercial.

Cringe. Just stop making commercials. Stop. Now.

I cried; I laughed.
The end sucked the hardest. I didn't hate it until then. See, they had a black dude in it. Black people = not nerdy. Magic = somewhat less nerdy in the opinions of people watching the commercial. Logic!

They just wanted to show tokens as well as cards.

Im stunned but remember the commercial is not geared towards serious players but casual folk. they identify with the people shown. except the actors looked showers and the typical pre release player aint so clean... or slender...

This reminds me of the commercials for the Tenth Edition event where they had a crowded store but were sure to showcase the 1 black guy there, I think they even had a girl in there! WOTC should make commercials that are both realistic, and not suck, unlike this one.

At the end of the commercial, does the 'M' on the guy's chest stand for 'Magic' or 'Morningtide'?

Try misogyny. Seriously, look at those guys. They're jaded, because they know they'll never feel the inside of a woman.

I found it hilarious that the commerical hinted several times that showering before the prelease would be a good idea.

If by several times you mean the guy at the beginning was sniffing his pits then yeah...God I hate WOTC

My armpits are sufficiently un-smelly. TO THE PRERELEASE!

If my prerelease experiences are any indication, its more like "I smell awful because I havnt showered! Off I go!"

Honestly, dude, did you really think we didn't have ways to tell if it was you or not? Come on. ~ Nightmare

Dear Wizards,

Your commercials (and the youtube video's with these actors in them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jir5fhAe7aw)) make me want to quit Magic.

Sincerely,

Tacosnape, methinks. And he really does.

Also, does anyone else think it's weird that the one guy is sleeving up cards (be)for(e) a limited tournament? Or is he just practicing sleeving cards? Because he's doing it horribly.

And why does the black guy have to be blindfolded in order to learn how to shuffle fast?

I always sleeve my cards, Limited or Constructed...

Right, but he's doing it before the prerelease. Is he expecting to play with those cards? Does he not know he's going to build a new deck?

He's just planning on playtesting his fluctuator build.

I think they were trying to show him practicing, like the guy with the blindfold shuffling...

Well yeah, but that was dumb too. It's not like being able to shuffle blindfolded makes you any better at doing it without one.

But I'm nitpicking. This commercial is lame for so many other reasons.

01-11-2008, 11:45 PM
Wow, that commercial is just so lame...

I think I changed my mind about the pre-release. I am not going after seeing that. >_>

I hope scaring potential new players wasn't what Wizard was trying to do.

Really at this point why not just go all out and actually show the bizzare menagerie that is the casual magic scene. I want to see it all, take the veil from mine eyes and show me the lame, the ignorant, the unwashed. I want to see the one lone guy wearing his chainmail t shirt and steel studded pants, show me his black cloak wearing trogladyte girl friend, show me the true depths that this hobby attracts to the rarely seen light of day.. that will attract jus the kind of people wizards is looking for..

or not

For something that could have sucked beyond all reasonable comprehension, it wasn't that bad. Marketing-wise, at least they're not pandering to the 13 year old scrawny nerd with glasses with terrible acne and whose odd of getting laid in the next 10 years hover around 50/50.

It really could have been a lot worse.

And I never watch Adult Swim, so I don't have to suffer through these. Spending all my free time on the interwebs ftw.

When it comes to marketing, Wizards fails hard. (Pro Tour cards anyone?)

Plus, Wizards was never good at making decent commercials - neither in America nor anywhere else. Seriously, I saw a 10th commercial here in Germany which praised Enormous Baloth (!) like it was the friggin Messiah. However, this is stupid for two reasons:
a) Enormous Baloth sucks
b) People who don't know the game have no idea what the hell is going on or what they're talking about.

The only "good" commercials were the ones with Bob, Orgg, Rhox, etc. - not because they were good, but so stupid that they were actually funny.
