Me and Burn didn't do so well yesterday at the local shop's Legacy tournament.
2-0, 0-2, 1-2 for the event (1-2 match record)
First match, I'm not sure what I was playing [it had some manlands and some targeted discard]. I was able to outrace it.
Second match, I was playing against what I believe was a Landstill variant. Counters and Meddling Mage screwed me over repeatedly.
Also, I sacced my last lands for what i thought would be a winning pair of Fireblasts. One got countered, my opponent was able to survive at 4.
Third match, I played against White Weenie.
Silver Knight and Soltari Priest were aggravating. Due to them having pro-red, I couldn't buy time by burning them away.
First time I was able to outrace him. Second and third games I wasn't.
Jitte and Sword of Fire and Ice were problems in both of the games I lost. Both gave me a quicker beating, and Jitte's lifegain option stalled.
Of course, after I board in my Shattering Sprees, I don't draw them. :mad:
I had Price of Progress in sideboard, but not mainboard. That was a mistake, having that in game 1 would have helped against the first and second opponents.
Sulfuric Vortex could have helped too I think, especially against Mr. Counterspells from the 2nd match. (Once it stuck, I would have had a recurring source of burn).
I run Flame Rift, indicating that I am willing to hit myself if necessary.
As for counterspells: I tried some counterspelling of my own, via Red Elemental Blast. Good idea? (As it happened, after I boarded them in, I didn't draw any.)
This is a trap with Burn, sometimes I am tempted to burn away unimportant creatures, as opposed to tossing said burn at the dome. I think I did some of, but not too much, of that.
