Prepare for a truly historic day in tcgs, one that every single trading card game player should celebrate...

OCTGN 1.0 was a program like Magic Workstation, Apprentice, Magic Online etc that allowed people to play magic games online. It packed a lot more features, was completely free but was difficult to use.

But 1.0 sucked in terms of ease of use. OCTGN 2.0 is a whole another animal.

So an effort was made to scrap the program and start over from scratch to built a feature rich program that looks boatloads better and runs much much smoother than Magic Workstation, but be very simple and straight forward and fast to use.

And after three years of programming, OCTGN 2.0’s alpha build is finally out here…

But to run it, you also need .net framework 3.5, which you can get here... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&DisplayLang=en

P.S. I had absolutely nothing to do with this program ever. I just use it and am a HUGE fan.

What are the advantages of OCTGN 2.0 over Magic Workstation?

Full complete multiplayer support - No more are you limited to the monotonous format of dueling. Any multiplayer format that you know of, OCTGN fully supports, emperor yep, draft yep, two headed dragon yep, free for all yep, five color yep, mental magic yep! The number of players that can play is only limited by how many you can fit on your monitor before you start having to squint.

It looks insanely good and runs incredibly well, and it's super intuitive to boot - Better than Magic Online, Way way better than Magic Workstation, the feature set of OCTGN combined with the intuitive simplicity of Apprentice. Seriously, just check it out. And all of the usability problems of the first OCTGN (1.0) have been addressed so that a monkey could get it up and running. This is one exceptionally polished badass looking program.

Completely free - no ads, no popups, no restrictions, no monthly fees, nothing.

Every feature under the sun - Seriously, every single feature that any online tcg program ever had (with the sole exception of AI support), this program already has. If you by some chance think up something that this program can't already do, that brings me to my next point...

Closed Open Source - What this means is that the code (except for the encryption) is released, so any programmer can add features to it, but at the same time, there is one encrypted official version of the program so that you can't play unless you're using the same version of the program as the other person. What this means, if you want to add a new feature to the program, feel free, and just post it on the developer site, and your new features will get added to the next official release. You get all the security of the other programs, but also the rapid addition of new features and optimizations of open source programs.

Support for any TCG including custom user created ones - That's the whole point of the program actually. It was designed to play magic, it was designed to play any tcg that a person can dream up. You feel like making up a tcg featuring robot pirates battiling doctor mcninjas, make it, distribute the sets to your friends, and play it. You want to make up new sets for your favorite tcg, go right ahead, send them to your friends, and play it.

Why isn't OCTGN used in the Magic-League tournaments?

By switching over to this program, magic-league could hold regular drafts and multiplayer tournaments as well instead of just hosting duals.

It looks cleaner, runs faster, is completely free, and is OPEN SOURCE which means it just keeps getting better and better.

But it's encrypted on both sides and locked, so hacking the program to cheat is simply not possible.

I downloaded OCTGN 1.0 and really didn't like it (it's true that the interface was impossible to get the hang of), but if 2.0 fixed that and has all this shit you're talking about, it's definitely worth a shot. I'll download it later when I get home and try it out.

Also, Momir Basic much? It should totally support that.

Yeah, that's why OCTGN 1.0 was scrapped in 2004 and three years were spent remaking the program from the ground up to make it absolutely perfect, and fix all the problems with OCTGN 1.0.

Is there a Magic module? I can't read production blogs. I had a hard time finding the program itself.

I don't know if there's a Magic module yet, but I don't think there is, as this is alpha testing. I'll post my thoughts on it when it's finished downloading...

edit - Finished. And wow. The program, overall, is amazing. It will only let you play a game (and at this point only with the blue moon cards), so I can't speak for deck editing, but the program is very, very pretty, and by the looks of it, functional. One thing I like is that graveyard and library views are of the actual cards, which make it a lot easier to pick certain cards out than the list MWS gives you. Also, targeting is very well done, but it requires you to press the middle mouse button (and therefore have one) when you could just right click and drag like MWS.

A few qualms, though:

-When you double click on the library, it refills your hand. This isn't really intuitive, as most players (especially those who've played with MWS in the past) will assume that it draws a single card.
-You can't drag boxes. If you click on the playing field, and drag the mouse pointer, it moves everything on the field. You can't select more than one thing at once (at least, I couldn't figure out how), and you have to move things individually.
-Some things work differently than they do in MWS. This is important, because a lot of people will be switching over from MWS if they start using this program, so keeping the things that MWS does well the same will make the transition a lot easier. No one wants to relearn how to do everything they already know.
-There doesn't seem to be any avatars or representation of a player, so it might be hard to drag arrows for cards that target players because there's nowhere to drag them to. This might just be because I was in a single player game, though.
-Joining your own game with a second instance of the program causes the program to crash, and there doesn't seem to be any way to play single player with two decks.

Overall, though, it's still the Alpha, and if it keeps going this way, it could easily outclass MWS as the premier free online Magic utility.

Does not install on my XP computer.

You shouldn't have to install. It's a .rar file, and you just extract and go. If you extracted, and it didn't go, download and install the Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&DisplayLang=en).

P.S. I had absolutely nothing to do with this program ever. It's a very important thing to stress, IMHO. ;)

I'll download the program and test it when I get back home, it seems it can be kind of interesting.

I look forward to the day that this program has a Magic the Gathering Masterbase and base code, until then, I am going to have to ask that people keep us informed as to what is going on in this program. Thanks.

Are there Linux (ubuntu) repositories for this? One of the largest problems with MWS for me is that I can't get it on my Laptop.

"Double click = refill hand. Double click triggers the default action for the group/card. You can identify the default action because it’s in bold in the context menu. This is game-dependant. For Blue Moon, you always refill your hand to 6 at end of turn, so this makes sense. For a game like MtG, the default action would be to simply draw a card."

Looks like hes on top of things :D
