Tosh & Pinder are you guys still coming up Friday and what time will you be here? BTW one of you guys might consider bringing a sleeping bag because I forgot to mention one of the 3 couches I have is actually a love seat. I used to sleep in it all the time but it's a little small. I also have a recliner you can sleep in if you want to.

I'm the smallest and could probably sleep on the love seat. We would either leave Friday ~11pm (3am arrival, IDK if that's too late for you) or early Saturday morning ~8am (11am arrival, we might have to leave earlier if the tournament starts earlier).

Tournament on Saturday starts @ 3pm. So it won't be a problem if you are going to be in the area around 11-noon, as it's pretty easy to navigate Portland freeways on Saturdays. It'd probably take about 30 min (45 tops in traffic) to hit Ancient Wonders from either Vancouver-Portland bridge.

Eh, I'll think of you when I'm enjoying my legroom .

That seriously sucks, though. You should contract a mysterious and semi-debilitating disease that day that can only be cured by 4+ hours of Magic: The Gathering. I'm sure your boss will understand.

He's alive! Even Brett, who has been MIA since about the time the lists split, is going to make it to this tournament, and you can't take a day off of work?

We are currently about to check out of a hotel in Half Moon Bay, which is just south of San Francisco. I managed to get some more pictures uploaded, though I'm not sure if they'll satisfy Nightmare (when you're taking pictures from a moving vehicle, you have to take several shots to make sure you get a decent one, so you end up with a lot of pictures of roads). Pictures from New Orleans will have to come later, since we forgot our digital camera when we went down to the French Quarter and had to buy a disposable camera there. There are also some pictures on Anwar's camera that we have not uploaded yet.

Conservative driving would put you on our side by about 1pm, 1:30 if there's decent traffic anywhere. Give Chris or I a call tomorrow around that time for directions down to the store from I-5 or 205 if you don't print any out before.

Also, I will be relying on some printed out shit but I have a tendency to get lost even in my own town.

Chris and myself (Ryan) are both on the first page. Both of us should have our phones with us, I assume. If not, you can always call the store (503)-692-0753 and ask for one of us, or even directions from one of the employees, they're used to it.

Okay, I'm not reporting the sixth round because all we really care about is who made Top 8. So...

Anwar Ahmad (AnwarA101) - Ichorid
Geoff Cannard - Elves (!)
Bret Lindstrom (LinkXWing) - BHWC Landstill
Trevor Bristow - GBW Something.dec (Truffle Shuffle, or Rock with Exalted?)
David Price (quicksilver) - RGB Survival
Brad Gourley - Goblins
Brian Crownhart (Maverick676) - Weird Level Blue
Chis Lennon (Volt) - Aggro Loam

Pairings:

Volt - Aggro Loam
VS
Maverick676 - Weird Level Blue

quicksilver - RGB Survival
VS
AnwarA101 - Ichorid

Geoff Cannard - Elves!
VS
Brad Gourley - Goblins!

LinkXWing - BHWC
VS
Trevor Bristow - GBW.dec

This just in! Turns out I had some decknames wrong. At least 4 players in the top 8 registered their decks as 'Nourishing Lich'. Looks like it's heading for DTB, guys!

Although I'm not sure if there's a really agreed upon list...

Snippet of phone conversation I heard from Pinder, because I made him give me up to date, over-the-phone tournament reporting (this is round 6):

Pinder: So, Chris (Volt) and someone with an Island and a Goyf...the guy with an Island has a Goyf, so Chris is probably going to lose.
(five minutes later, after passing on the phone, Nick updates me)
Nick: Chris has a Terravore, against a Goyf. Oops, and the Terravore died, which means Chris is probably losing. Oh. There goes the Goyf.
Don: Yeah, he's playing Islands. Chris is going to win.

Oh, yeah, pair the East Coast guys against each other, I see how it works...

But seriously, if Price doesn't rip is anti-grayeyard hate, I think Anwar takes it down.

Also, 40% (or is it 33%? I recognize 5 East Coast names, so I assume it's 5 and not 6) T8 penetration is not bad (the "average" would be ~10.6% on 5 people, and ~12.8% on 6).

Bah, interesting? I think both Goblins and AggroLoam are way underplayed. Loam moreso, but Goblins doesn't seem to get any love any more. I'm really pleased to see them both placing in a major tournament.

And the Elves! vs Goblins! deck Wizards put out a few sets ago should totally have been these two lists, whatever they end up actually being...

Also, I haven't actually seen Brett (LinkXWing) in months. And I haven't seen him play anything besides Landstill since...um...well, long before the lists split. Back then it had Mana Drain. Since he cut that card and moved to several colors to offset that loss, I don't know that anything has changed. Must be nice to be so good that you can reappear from the dead, pick up a deck that has more dust on it than Harrison Ford, and Top 4 a major tournament.

IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Aggro Loam squares off against RB Goblins in the finals! Who will take the title? Will Volt win his own dual land draft?

They split. We'll never know.

Alright, so Nourishing Lich takes 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 7th, and 8th. There was an Ichorid Variant, a Survival Variant, and Aggro Loam variant, and a Landstill variant, and Next Level Lich port from Extended.

It's a Deck to Beat now. It's the rules, guys.

I may be mistaken, but is this the first major tournament* to have both major East Coast and West Coast players in it? Of the Top 8, looked like Volt, Maverick, and LinkXWing from the West Coast, and Anwar and Quicksilver from the East Coast.

Where are Geoff, Trevor, and Brad from? Sorry, guys, I don't recognize your names. Freakish777 made it sound like 5 of the Top 8 may have been East Coast, which would make all three of you the other three guys that drove out here in that car? Awesome.

Did Bardo get shafted on breakers, or did he get paired down/forced to play and lose in round 6?

The latter (paired down, forced to play, lost). Of all of the 4-1s, I had the worst tie-breakers. Sucks, I was definitely felt like I was playing a 5-1 or 6-0 deck, but the wheels sort of fell off at the end.

My list:

4-Color Threshold

4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
3 Sensei's Divining Top

4 Force of Will
4 Daze
3 Counterbalance
3 Thoughtseize
2 Spell Snare

4 Swords to Plowshares
1 Engineered Explosives

4 Nimble Mongoose
4 Tarmogoyf
2 Mystic Enforcer

4 Polluted Delta
4 Flooded Strand
4 Tropical Island
3 Underground Sea
3 Tundra

Sideboard
4 Hydroblast
3 Engineered Plague
3 Extirpate
2 Krosan Grip
2 Pithing Needle
1 Engineered Explosives

Yeah, Ichorid would have smacked the hell out of me, I was betting I wouldn't face it.

In retrospect, I should have cut the maindeck EE for Spell Snare #3 or Thoughtseize #4.

Round 1: 2-1 vs. U/G/b Threshold
Round 2: 1-2 vs. CounterSliver (fucked this one up seriously -- previously, in the bag)
Round 3: 2-1 vs. Burn
Round 4: 2-0 vs. U/R Painter Combo
Round 5: 2-1 vs. U/G/r/w Threshold
Round 6: 1-2 vs. Next Level Blue (Legacy-style)

A longer report is forthcoming, since that's What I Do.

In the meantime, I extend deep and heart-felt props to T is for Tool, Alix and Jesse Hatfield, Anwar Ahmad, Dave Price and everyone else who went far out of their way to attend and to Chris Lennon (Volt) for organizing and making this happen.

Again, I'll get my report up in a few days. With pics!

Oh, no. I meant there were 5 East Coast names I recognized (Kreiger, the Hatfields, Dave Price, and Anwar) and 2 of them T8'd (Price and Anwar), thus 40% of the East Coast contingent made Top 8.

You missed T is for Tool who flew out for the weekend just to play, so it's 33%. Still, not bad.

You missed T is for Tool who flew out for the weekend just to play, so it's 33%. Still, not bad.

Well, considering the number of players that the West Coast brought (41), and the percent of them who top 8'd (6/41=~15%), it's really not bad.

More specifically, Ninjas had 8 people there, and 2 of them top 8'd (so only 25%), but we did have a guy in the finals (ironically, the man who bought the duals).

And speaking of top 8s:

So any top 8 predictions? Here is the top 8 that I think will happen:

2 Landstill
1 Thresh
1 Enchantress
1 Ichorid
1 Goyf Sligh
1 BGW Control/Rock
1 Stax

So he hit one Landstill, Ichorid, and BGW Control. Not bad for a top 8 prediction.

And yes, with the success we're pretty much confirming that there will be future events. The goal is to have something every season or so, but the DLD style stuff will be once a year, at summertime (this is the plan, at least). Other things will probably be smaller (say like $10-15 entry with like $400-600 payout in top 4/8), and Mike from Batcave also said we may see some Power tournaments in the future.

Next event is speculated for August, not exactly sure what that is gonna be though. I'm sure Chris will be keeping people informed as he hears things from Mike.

And yes, this tournament was the largest Legacy tournament that the West Coast has ever seen. You should be proud.

We had at least double that for GP Hollywood easy.

Congrats to my buddy Volt for representing the team and the coast

So he hit one Landstill, Ichorid, and BGW Control. Not bad for a top 8 prediction.

I would have been closer if I was there. :(

Seriously, I was pissed I couldn't go. My friend who I was going with was my ride and he called me early in the morning telling me how he couldn't go because he was going to the hospital. His grandma apparently fell, but is alright. Please, please do another tournament in August, Chris.

SB:
1 Cabal Therapy
1 Chainer's edict
1 Rough/Tumble
1 Regrowth
1 Gleeful Sabotage
4 Leyline of the void
2 Yixlid Jailer
4 Krosan grip
Round 1 - Ichorid

Game 1: I am on the play. I mull to 6 he mulls to 4. I open with a first turn thoughtsieze seeing putrid imp, 2x golgari grave troll, gemstone mine. He thins he just lost, but I said he still has plenty of outs. He rips another putrid imp for his turn. I play survival on turn two. He is jsut dredging one grave troll a turn and I end up getting faerie macabre and removing ichorids and bridges each turn, preventing him from actually doing anyhting agressive. I end up evoking a shriekmaw to kill a narcromeba and a bridge, then FTKing the imp next turn and winning shortly after.

Game 2: I begin with double leyline of the void in play. He casts pithing needle on Survival. I cast a turn two Yixlid jailer. I have double goyf that are 0/1's so I therapy my self for Survival to pump them each by 2. He has one chain of vapor but it's certainly not enough.

1-0

Round 2 - Tosh playing It's the fear.

Game 1: He gets a game loss for writting counterspell twice on the decklist instead of a counterbalance. The judge also was kind enough to put the deck list down between us before the match and point this out. I don't know what it is about judges, they need to not only give my opponent a game loss but also tell me what he is playing.

Game 2: I think I open with first turn birds, second turn thoughtsieze, survival. I think he gets a counterbalance down and a enginereed explosives. I tin street the explosives. He intuitions for Life from the Loam, academy ruins, and wasteland when I am tapped out at one point. I give him wasteland. He dredges back loam, wastes me, then gets back waste, ruins, and a fetch I think. I go for faerie macabre removing loam and engineered explosives, he never finds another artifact that game to bring back. He does waste me down to 3 lands, but that's still enough to chug out goyfs and he loses not long after.

2-0

Round 3 - Moon Thesh

Game 1: I think I lead with first turn thoughtsieze taking force seeing like all cantrips. Second turn Survival and he wasn't able to find a force or daze. I bury him in card advantage and win.

Game 2: I think he resolves a turn 2 counterblance and wiffs when I play my turn two survival. The game is pretty close and I am land light but I think I end up being able to stabalize at 1 life.

Round 4: AnwarA101 - Ichorid

Game 1: I think I mull to 6 or 5. I go turn 1 blind therapy naming putrid imp, I see LED, breakthough, dredgers, etc... I do not get another turn.

Game 2: I keep a no land double leyline, double Yixlid jailer hand on the play. My first turn consisted of me saying go with two leylines in play. He plays a land and passes. I rip a fetch for bayou and I thoughtsieze him. He has double chain of vapor and ray of revalation but no actual gas, I take a chain of vapor. In a turn or two he plays LED, then on my turn I rip a birds. I get out double jailer in the next two turns but cannot beat because of a putrid imp and I got a narcromeba beating me down. I think I am at like 10 at this point. By this point he has bounced one of my leylines. He rays the other one. I rip a thrid leyline and replay the second one so I have 1 leyline 2 jailers and a goyf in play and gonna play a second leyline next turn. I swing in with my jailers and one trades with a putrip imp. I figure I am pretty safe so I don't mind saccing a jailer to kill an imp and greatly speed up my clock. Boy was I wrong. He rips his third chain of vapor that turn, bounces jailer, flashes back ray. I am thinking ok, I can just replay jailer next turn, he has to kill me in one turn with only like 2 mana and he started with like nothing in hand. I do not see another turn.

If I am gonna lose, I am glad it's to another member of team unicorn. At least I know Anwar is guaranteed in now.

3-1

Round 5: T is for Tool - Goblins

Another team unicorn member. I offer the draw so we can both try to get it on the next round. He wants to play it out so the winner gets in, the loser gets knocked out.

Game 1: He mulls to 6. He plays first and says land go. I am happy not to see a lackey or fnataic. I think my hand is birds, survival, and tripple therapy (or I shortly draw into the third). He has no turn 2 play so I think I play survival and blind therapy for warchief and hit two. I think I see double matron, ringleader, siegegang and no more land. He misses his third land drop so I therapy 2 matrons. He gets a land, then I therapy his ringleader and siegegang. I also have goyfs beating down that I survivaled up. He does not play a spell this turn.

Game 2: He starts with lackey. I Burning wish for rough/tumble, then he wastes my only red land. I evoke shriekmaw on warchief. But he has like 10 power out of ringleaders and matrons by this point and even if I could cast rough, he has like 7 rediculous goblins in hand since his ringleaders kept hitting 4 goblins. MY hand is gas with survival goyf, rough tumble. Can't live long enogh to cast it though cause of wasteland and I die a fast death.

Game 3: Our first actual game that's not a blow out. I rough tumble his inital rush and follow it with a Survival. We fight it out but I end up victorious.

4-1

Round 6: I draw into the top 8.

Top 8: AnwarA101 - Ichorid

Game 1: First turn win again.

Game 2: I start with double leyline. I play turn two survial and tutor up double jaler. He only sees two chain of vapor that game and isn;t able to play them in time and win before th jailer hits since I am on the play.

Game 3: I begin with leyline in play. I have a jailer in hand. I don;t have a turn one play. He bounces leyline at the end of my turn, and I do not see a second turn.

In the end I ended up with a playset of Taigas. The only matches I lost were both to Anwar (damn him for having a chain of vapor for each leyline I had every game) and the only games I lost were to fellow members of team unicorn.

Thanks to Volt and Tosh for putting us up and to every one else for being awesome.

Slops to Zilla who only lives a half hour away but coudn't be bothered to just come and say hello when we drove 2 weeks to get there.

I am actually convinced the reason that most blue decks are underperforming is because all of the deckbuilders are too greedy with their mana.

Truth. You don't have to tell me, I used to to play Wake and 1.5 Landstill (you know, with 26 and 27 lands, respectively).

People who like playing Force of Will take note: it's retarded to play a deck that wants to hit at least the first four land drops and only be playing 22-23 lands. I don't care if you have brainstorm and fetches. Start with a base of 27 lands and for every cantrip you run, you cut .5 lands.

Double post for Anwar's feature match!

Anwar is running Ichorid (which he piloted to a flawless 4-0-2 in the Swiss, and a victory in the quarterfinals) opposite Brad Gourley's :r::b: Goblins list. They roll, and Anwar wins and chooses to go first.

Game 1

Anwar mulligans two terrible hands in a row into a mediocre five-card hand containing (from what I remember) LED, Golgari Thug, Cabal Therapy, Gemstone Mine, and some random blank. After a moment of thought he decides that it's better than going to four and keeps. Brad keeps his opening grip of seven.

Anwar opens with a Gemstone into a Therapy targeting himself and pitches the Thug into the yard, passing the turn. On his first turn Brad cracks a Foothills into a Mountain and plays a Mogg Fanatic to foil any bridge plans Anwar may have had. (Anwar 20, Brad 19)

Anwar dredges the Thug during his next draw step, hitting Cabal Therapy, Flame-Kin Zealot, Cephalid Coliseum, and Narcomoeba. He puts the 'moeba on the table and passes the turn after playing an LED. Brad uses his second turn to play a Badlands and make a Piledriver. (Anwar 20, Brad 19)

During his third upkeep, Anwar cracks his LED to get Thug back into his graveyard for the dredge on his draw step. Unfortunately, he hits nothing relevant, takes 3 burn and passes the turn.
Brad uses his turn to drop another Badlands, make a Warchief and turn it and his Piledriver sideways. Anwar lets them through, dropping to 12. (Anwar 12, Brad 19)

Anwar spends his fourth turn drawing a card, followed by a heavy sigh and a pass.
Brad drops a Rishadan Port, sacs his Fanatic to kill Anwar's only blocker and taps out to make a Siege-Gang Commander. With that, Anwar picks up his cards and they move to game 2.

Game 2

Brad sideboards some number of cards which I didn't catch (I want to say 3?), and Anwar puts in 4 (?) Chain of Vapor from the side. I was sort of distracted at this point, so Anwar is free to correct me if I got this wrong.

Anwar only mulligans once this time, and decides to keep his six card grip. Brad once again keeps his opening seven.

Anwar opens this game by dropping a City of Brass and passing the turn. Brad uses his first turn to fetch a Badlands, taps it to make a Fanatic and then plays Tormod's Crypt just in case anyone was still wondering if he had the nuts again. (Anwar 20, Brad 19)

Anwar plays another City on his second turn, and Therapies himself to get a Grave-Troll into the yard, passing the turn. Brad drops a Port, summons a Piledriver (again) and swings in for 1. (Anwar 18, Brad 19)

Anwar dredges the Troll during his next draw, hitting (among other things) a Bridge, a Therapy, and a Dread Return. He then plays a Breakthrough for 1, deciding to keep the Putrid Imp in his hand and pitching the rest. Brad attacks for 4 and plays a Vial on his postcombat main. (Anwar 12, Brad 19)

Anwar dredges his Troll again during his draw, and finally hits something relevant: two Bridge from Below and a Stinkweed Imp. He plays the Imp in his hand and passes the turn. Brad moves Vial up to 1 counter, and plays another Piledriver, but doesn't attack with anything. (Anwar 11, Brad 19)

Anwar dredges the Stinky Imp on his draw, hitting a Narcomoeba and an Ichorid. He sacs the 'moeba to Therapy, but in response Brad crypts away his entire graveyard. Bereft of zombies, Anwar names Warchief when the Therapy resolves, but whiffs as he ends up staring down a hand of Earwig Squad (we would later find out these were there because Brad didn't have the Extirpates for the board), and three (that's right, three) Goblin Matrons. Brad pushes his Vial up to two counters, turns everything sideways for lethal, and Anwar throws his Imp into the red zone to get Piledriven (is that a word?), but not before he pitches Grave-Troll and Stinkweed Imp to it.
(Anwar 5, Brad 19)

Anwar dredges the Troll on his draw, but sees nothing that would help him, and extends his hand, securing Brad's place in the finals.

Short version: Luck is a bitch.

I mulled to these 5 - Gemstone Mine, Cabal Therapy, LED, LED, Golgari Thug. I think I made a mistake by not playing Therapy on him naming Fanatic as that is the best card against me. Then I should have probably played both LEDs and cracked one of them on my upkeep. As it turns out he played the fanatic and it was downhill from there.
