Wizards of the Coast is now making a video game. This could be really cool or a big, expensive failure. What do you think?

It's going to be another failure, but it won't have enough impact to do anything. Maybe we're getting 5 Sets per year very soon.
"Save Wizards of the Coast"?
Do they need saving?

Are we talking about that Goblin game?

The question is: Why has it to be a strategy game? I want a FPS based on MTG where I can brutally slaughter all of those abominations from Lorwyn and Kamigawa block. Seriously, add the possibility to gain abilities, depending on what mana direction your character goes, and some other enhancements in form of auras and equipment and it could be a fun game.
Er, Wizards of the Coast is not making a game. If they did, it would fail horribly since their internal software development has always been completely incompetent.

Wizards of the Coast is licensing the rights to Magic to two developers. This means the delevopers pay Wizards.
There's almost zero risk or downside, unless the games are somehow so awful that they make people hate Magic.

Barook is right. It's impossible to make a valuable card strategy game. Not with 2 developers. The best would be to keep the flavor and to do an heroic fantasy game, FPS or Role Playing.
Anyway, I think that we are not the targets.

Shandalar 2 is the only possible outcome. God, I'd give my left nut for that, with all the quirks of the original game, and all the rules and card updates.

I'll third that, even though I haven't played the game yet.

Would be way too cool, and with a bit of luck they'd even leave the power in.

If it's an rpg I want to play as either Braids or Kharn.

If they were picking the Wii they might be saving the company. Xbox? Hmmm.

sixthed...
Though i think something aking to a Heroes of M&M aproach might work alright too.
I just hope to god the PC game isnt a shooter of some sort. While the idea of continuously killing a Goyf with a BFG or Rocket launcher just to reanimate it and kill it again would give some satisfaction, it wont make for a good game.

Shandalar MMO would be the greatest game of all time.

They have that, its called Magic the Gathering Online, 'cept instead of searching dungeons and batlling random mages to find cards, you shell out tons of money for 'virtual' cardboard, from what I hear it's pretty sucessful.

For what it's worth, MtG: Battlegrounds was a fun game.

I heard otherwise. Something along the lines of pouring acid into my eyes was more fun, etc.

I personally found it a fun twist on fighting games (which I have never enjoyed much otherwise). I suppose it could get boring if one stuck to the broken combos, though.

Shandalar is good enough that it remains on my computer to this day.

The movies may be based on such Hasbro properties as Monopoly, Candy Land, Clue, Ouija, Battleship, Magic, The Gathering or Stretch Armstrong, the two companies said in a joint statement.
What do you think? Hayden Christiansen as Gerrard? Jessica Simpson as Sisay?
I shudder.

Why? It can't be worse than the Weatherlight novels.

killing a Goyf with a ... Rocket launcher
http://sales.starcitygames.com/cardscans/MAGFUT/tarmogoyf.jpg vs. http://sales.starcitygames.com/cardscans/MAGANQ/rocket_launcher.jpg
I disagree, killing Tarmogoyf with a Rocket Launcher would make me laugh every single time I did it in an FPS (largely due to the irony of trying to do it in a real game of Magic).
EDIT:
Additionally, you know if an FPS were created of Magic, it would no doubt have to be somewhat similar to BioShock. Replace the biological things you're able to do with spells you can cast, your mana would recharge automatically, pick up new spells, you'd get more total available mana in your manapool for little mana symbols you ran over. You could either pick up equipment, or learn the spell to create it, etc. Actually could be very good.

Etherlords 2 was a fun game and it kinda reminded of MTG. something on a larger scale, and properly done, would be nice I guess

The collapse of the company as a whole as they're gonna have to partnership with another company for the programing as they don't have many programmers up in that company.

Way to fail at reading. They don't have to "partner" with anyone. They get other people to pay them for the right to make games based on the Magic universe.
