View Full Version : I need ideas for a blog

I have plans of starting a video blog on Youtube to bring more awareness for the MTG Legacy Community.

I need all the ideas I could get my hands on to effectively counterstrike all of the FNM and PTQ players who have blogs on that site. Vintage is there from time to time but it's kinda dry.

Don't know when or how long it will take before I could actually launch it but I want to do it so the world could finally distinguish Legacy from Vintage. Half of the world might have gotten the message but some still think that the world is still flat so if anybody has ideas out there I'll be happy to take them into consideration.

Well, you could start by recording games between the more interesting MU's (e.g. Goblins vs. Thresh), or just goldfishing combo. Like video primers of sorts.

Do you live somewhere with a regular tournament scene?

Do you live somewhere with a regular tournament scene?

Unfortunately the community is over at Eudemonia in Berkeley and I don't go there often enough to make it worth my time ($7 round trip) and SF only has a single card shop with no Legacy Community as it only has Random Casuals, an FNM crowd, a gang of PTQers, and a small Vintage Community. I'm pretty much the person looking for one shot hit and miss deals (I found a real Winter Mishra's Factory for $10 there along with a play set of Spring versions for $6 a card).

I wanted to start the blog to show that there is more than just FNM, PTQ and Vintage out in the community when it comes to Video Blogs. (Most Blogs only talk about FNM, and PTQ formats (note: the MTG Show and the Proffessors) with Vintage from time to time with Luis actually playing the format in the photos).

Last Night I spent an hour (300-400) writing up an introductory and intend to see what I could do with a basic logitech computer camera which will act as the first way to launch the blog. (I'm practicing with the script even as of now making edits from time to time to make it better) (content is rated M)

Once my resources come through with a Camcorder then I might spend more time in Berkeley to go film matches on those designated days when there is a crowd. Might even catch Luis when he is not away at a GP or PT event.

Problem is, without actual tournament play to highlight, you're not really gonna have much material to work with. There is no way there's enough content to do a Legacy "the Magic Show."

Vlog/Blog about a legacy deck from start to finish. Introduce the deck and its origins then move through playtest and improvement and finish with the deck being played in a high level legacy event, either a DLD or Running GAGG style event. Maybe you could even luck out and have the blog coincide with a Legacy GP or PTQ. As far as video is concearned I think the iteraction, language and personalities available to you would make for an interesting viewing experience. This way you can highlight the aspect of the Magic gamer that is largely ignored, intellectual, competative and not-loserish.

If I had the resources and ambition, I'd do one. Alas, I have neither.

If I had the resources and ambition, I'd do one. Alas, I have neither.

I have the ambitions, but I don't have all of the resources. First off I don't have a camcorder so my blog could only cover so much service area, then my community is located in Berkeley which is $7 for a round trip, I don't have all the parts to all of the net decks so trying to review most of them is difficult, and with no testing teams I'm limited from seeing what my prototypes could do.

Currently Berkeley is also having protests and the situation on their end isn't doing too good at the moment.

Anyway, I hope to act as an uplink to this community and if my operations could make a large impact then we could see a Legacy PT in the future and another event in Nor Cal.

I'll take into consideration deck analysis as long as I could get a hold of the complete deck data with origins, backgrounds, color variations, and it's current status on the format. This will not be "the mtg show 3" as there has already been a dispute over that with the Proffessors. The Blog will also cover other things from time to time that will include politics, RTS, and random stuff so it'll be more than just Legacy.

UPDATE: The Blog is up and running on Youtube.

The Blog will get better over time and with a combined effort.

Note: i still don't have a camcorder, so there won't be any featured matches for a while as I am doing these blogs with a computer camera.

But I have noticed that things are calming down in Berkeley, so I could be able to go back over soon to Eudemonia until things get bad again.

Suggestions:
1. Put a link in this thread, I had to use 'search' on youtube! I am lazy!
2. Film in front of an empty wall, or maybe with some posters on it. It looks more professional that way.
3. Make it more natural, don't read of the piece of paper. Evan solves this by making 'scenes' or by talking while showing some slides. But that will require some movie editing.

But anyways, keep it up, sure it will get better!

1. My username on this site is the same like on most of the other sites. I never put a link all the time as it gives me a way to survey how intelligent people are when it comes to finding content.

2. I'm working with a computer camera and there is no blank set of walls from the radius from where I am working from. The closest blank wall would require a camcorder which I don't have currently as it is out of range from both the computer camera. But when I do gain a hold of a camcorder I'll rest assure to upgrade.

3. This was my first as it was an introductory, I will assure that I won't be reading off a paper unless it is for a slide show that I haven't full figured out yet due to my other priorities.

But thanks anyway, as i will be working on those for until I have all of this other technical stuff figured out.

As for my ideas for my next blog is currently broken down into these topics....

-How to get started in Legacy and what the player will need most in their stockpile while shopping smart. (I'm pulling this one from my play book as the data is already there and ready to craft into a video).

-TV News that has been hanging around the community about the format. (I'll figure out a way to pull it off).

========== <here are a few things suggested so far when I do obtain a camcorder>
-Going over to Berkeley around their Legacy Event days and gathering data to be featured on the blog. (note: some might end up on Veoh due to MB reasons)

-Interviews (various lengths) (especially the ones about people not knowing that Legacy and Vintage are now totally different formats).

==========

This is currently an ambition that I've had since 2007 as Wizards isn't doing enough for the format in getting the message out there that Legacy and Vintage are two different formats. Setting things straight is what I intend to do with these first steps.

Well, I might be able to help in the following way. I have a camcorder (that I can borrow). Next time that I am in a tournament which I am not participating in, I can record the table 1 match for example, then try to edit it. I can then send you the footage. That might help you in the match coverage :)
But, I can only do this when I find some more time, which is not now definately, but hopefully very soon.

Deal. But what method are you going to use to send me the coverage?

Mail? or as an attachment through email?

If you do plan to cover and it happens to cut to the top 8 is it possible to record the top 2?

Evan has mentioned that his ideal Magic Show would involve correspondents sending him video of their respective communities. Evan has also shown a soft spot for the Legacy community and I'm sure would be receptive to your ideas and could possibly make some suggestions. I would suggest dropping him a line. He's very friendly and responsive, although he gets a lot of mail, so don't be afraid to send a friendly reminder every once in a while.

I've already done business with him already which includes the following....

-asking him to cover GP Columbus
-I tried to bring him my coverage back from GP SJ so he could review it with all the viewers of his show that I ended up posting independently when it didn't make it in.
-other stuff from time to time

...he's only one guy and he can only do so much. So I wanted to do something for this community in hopes of materializing Legacy PT events and making the wizards coverage a lot better than it is now (which is very insulting from my standpoint at the moment).

Who knows how long it will take but rest assure that I'll do whatever it takes with the help from this community site.

My latest installment is up for the legacy blog. It is 4 minutes long and it is from my playbook of how to get started in the format without too much jargon.

Since it is not how to start the game, it didn't take me that long to explain from my view about how to start the format as I assume that you already know the basics in response to one of the other users introducing Extended to the player who wanted to expand into that field.

I'll need to fix my script for the TV News that I might cover in my next blog on Legacy.

i think videos are to big for e-mails,
a easy way to send videos is putting them on youtube so the other could download it with firefox...

I will use rapidshare... But, I don't have the time yet, got to finish my paper for a math journal, and that is taking up most of my time...

is the link to head on over to my account to see all of the vids I've done so far with the blogs.

I am not Evan Erwin and I make this clear by keeping my blog as up close and personal to the viewer as possible like anyother video blog that people have done without all of the bouncy graphics.

UPDATE: In my last blog, I have decided to discontinue my deck reviews as everyone kinda didn't quite like my style of how I reviewed them. Then since there were a lot of stpuid T2 people, is the oter reason I will not be doing anymore reviews as not many people here don't know how much effort it takes just to put together a deck review.

Then, I am still in the process of looking for a reasonable price for a Mini DV camcorder, so I could bring everyone the match videos I promised earlier. As I found that the match videos are the best way of showing how the decks work and interact when put into practice. They will be all RAWs done the correct way, so I shouldn't be hearing too many complaints about certain BS the masses don't want to read too much about.

Before any of you start drooling over how bad some of my previous videos are (not all are Legacy related), please keep in mind that it takes a lot of determination, time, and effort just to put videos together. From filming it many times, to making whatever edits necessary all the way to publishing/posting it.

If you don't know how hard it is, here is the URL to Evan's episode 35 that explains it better than myself:

Haven't watched your videos, but if you're only filming matches and not, say, interviewing people, you might as well screen-capture Magic Workstation like I'm doing for the Two-Man Tournament. Total cost = €0 (which, not surprisingly, also means $0).

My style has to do with filming the matches live rather than electronically, as I find that the majority tings more often off of live coverage over some computer generated match played between two computers.

There is nothing wrong with Workshop, but the computer generated shuffling is the thing that I don't like about playing magic electronically at this time as you aren't actually shuffling the deck (the thing I like most about live games).

Note, that I also do interviews (all sorts) and brief words from time to time. They might require a bit more thought to put together in addition to all the other things that go into it.

But thanks anyways.

Ok, then I can only suggest you move to London, play Magic in the streets, and then request the CCTV footage from the government ;)

UPDATE: Camcorder is here. I shall be able to catch video coverage in Berkeley real soon once I get the permissions from the owners to gain a hold of the AC outlets I need to keep the power following. I have gained control of a Sony Handy Cam for the time being and when tech and funding has gotten better I'll move up the ladder.

I'll be able to catch match coverage and post them on both Youtube (for my subscribers) and Veoh (for the store's main site) as promised. Then with a bit of luck I'll be able to at least get one or two matches where Luis is playing the formats.

When the matches are posted, I'll be sure to post URLs on this thread to let you know when they've been posted.

UPDATE: My first two matches are finally posted although they are both using the Vintage format. If you have something good or bad to say about them, post a video response here with the URL. If you don't care about them or you hate the living lightlights out of them, stay silent.

I must also say again, I have discontined my deck reviews as of JUNE 2008. Because I have noticed that idiots around here are still thinking I am still doing them. If you have gotten the message, be sure to look over Blog 17 on my account.

I have also recently conducted an interview with Zac Hill a week before capturing the match coverage. So be sure to look over that carefully as I did ask him a few things about the matter from the most recently posted SCG article.

All the following matches don't aren't from one side of the table, nor do they have of ping pong in them.

So here are the URLs to those videos:
