Aegis of Honor - Enchantment

1: The next time an instant or sorcery spell would deal damage to you this turn, that spell deals that damage to its controller instead.

Question 1: If the opposing player plays chain lightning, when can I pay one mana to redirect it?

Question 2: Can I redirect a spell that doesn't target like Flame Rift? Would I still take the damage?

1) You may pay any time before the damaging effect occurs. So... you do it when it is on the stack. If another source supercedes it, say a Flame Dart is put on the stack after the effect takes place, the Flame Dart redirects first and you would need another occurance to handle the Chain Lightning.

2) You redirect the damage from the spell to its controller. If you cast the Flame Rift, it damages you. It is a forced redirect to the controller as the only valid affected 'target'. I say 'target' because the ability does not target, and thus skirts around Shroud effects.

You can play the ability any time you like, and it fades at end of turn. The ability does not target a spell so you can, for example, play it during your upkeep in respose to a rishidan port or just because you feel like it, then have still have the effect around if your opponenet has any end of turn burn.

If your opponent played Flame Rift, the damage would be redirected to him. So he would take 8 and you would take zero.

Also because this doesn't target the spell you do have to watch out. Say for example you are at 3 life with two mana up and your opponent casts lightning bolt at you. In resonse you can activate aegis, then he can lava dart you eating up that activation. If you play it again he can lava dart you again eating up that activation. Basicaly in this situation there is no way for you to live if your opponent plays it correctly. So not being targeted can have it's ups and downs.
