View Full Version : [Tournament] Local Legacy in Boston, MA, 5/3
ANNOUNCING!! Local Legacy Tournaments in Newton MA!
- Date: Saturday, May 3rd
- Start Time: 12:00pm (you can show up whenever you feel like it, just let me know if you'll be earlier than 11:30 am)
- Type: Legacy (1.5) - This event will not be DCI Sanctioned
- Cost: $5
- Location: Andover Newton Theological School- Student Lounge. 210 Herrick Road, Newton Centre, MA, 02459. Right off the Newton Centre T stop. It's a bit of a walk up the hill, but I'll shuttle people from the T if you'd like.
This tournament is right in Newton Centre, a 5 minute walk from the T. This means easy accessibility and plenty of food nearby. Because the venue is free, we can run good prize payouts, in a casual, friendly atmosphere.
The tournament will be Swiss with cut to Top 4, unless we somehow get 24 people, at which point I guess we'll cut to Top 8. The prize payout will be exactly the same as the entry fee, so if there are 10 people, we'll give $50 cash as prizes. If 20 people show up, it'll be $100 cash. (Please note: I don't expect more than 12 people to actually show up :) Unfortunately, I can't sanction it, because Wizards has a strange policy that Level 1 Tournament Organizers can't sanction Legacy events. Since those are the only events I'd ever want to sanction, I'll never be able to sanction them. Annoying, huh?
This tournament is being run on a campus, not in a gaming store, so there will be no singles for sale. That said, if you need anything, there will be several people there with very large collections, and if you let me know ahead of time, I'll pick stuff up for you at-cost.
Finally, there's a TV in the student lounge, so I'll bring my Wii and there will be Brawl action between rounds. If people want to have Brawl side-tournaments, I'm happy to do that as well, for duals or whatnot.
If you have any questions, PM me, or e-mail me at Evn [dot] Tomeny [at] Gmail [dot] com. Also feel free to give me a call (PM me for my number).

Evn, can you make this a week later? I'm treating my Mom out for her birthday to Midwest Grill on this date so I won't be able to make it.

The week after I'll be taking my MTEL, so I can't. I can run one on May 11th if people want.

Well, May 10th is the week after... the 11th is a Sunday, which is why I qualified. I'll be running this on the 3rd, rain or shine, but if people want them to happen other weekends, I'll run one any day that another tournament isn't happening in MA.
I'll also run them on any weekday that people want. So just lemme know :)

P.S. For food in the area... (Newton Center)
Coconut Cafe - Good Thai food, $8-10 range for dishes... Very good Kai Sub Kraplao but mixed curries are nice. Pick your meat and curry, flat prices... Then there's always Pad Thai.
Sweet Tomatoes - Damn good Neapolitan style pizzas. High end price (close to $20 for a large), but the pizzas are *huge*.
No. 1 Noodle Shop - Basic Chinese food. Order by picture/number. Lower price than above two.
Peet's Coffee - Duh.
J.P. Licks - Good local ice cream
Cold Stone Creamery - Also duh.

Its too far in the future to know for sure yet, but i might try going to this... taking the train to a tourny will be a new interesting... just gotta remember not to get off in natick by habit.
Leaving home at 9am for a noon tourny will be odd too....
The train i would take shows up in newton about 10:30, would this place you're holding this be open that early, or should i plan to have breakfast somewhere outside it while waiting?

If you're taking the Framingham/Worcester line... there are no stops that go near Newton Center to warn... The Commuter Rail runs north of Newton Center like a mile or so. The station on the map is the Newton Center green-line T-Stop on the Riverside (D) line.

Oh... didnt know that... i just assumed one of the stops was newton center. I'll have to look up how far it realy is i guess... If its realy only a mile or two, that'll give me something to do with that some of that hour and a half between the train getting there and the tourny starting.
Coconut Cafe - Good Thai food, $8-10 range for dishes... Very good Kai Sub Kraplao but mixed curries are nice. Pick your meat and curry, flat prices... Then there's always Pad Thai.
They also make the best Thai Fried Rice in the area.
To add to the list:
Bill's Pizzeria: Greek style pizza place, which some decent pasta dishes and good subs. Average falaffel as well.
Sapporo: Good Japanese/Korean restaurant. Reasonably priced sushi and mediocre tempura.
Tango Mango: Your typical taqueria. ~$5 burritos, a tiny bit dry, but otherwise quite good.
Subway: duh.
Johnny's Luncheonette (it's a diner): Supposedly the best breakfast in metro-west.
Plus an Indian place and a Mediterranean place.

"This place" is just the student lounge at a grad school, so it'll be open, but empty. There's a TV, and you're welcome to hang out, or call me and I'll bring over my Wii or something.

It's true, that line stops about a mile north of here, but there's a bus that runs right down into Newton Centre, or I can arrange a ride.

I'm going to play some terrible deck (read: Welder Survival) because:
a) $5 entry = cheap
b) non sanctioned event = no change in DCI rating
c) 0-2 drop --> playing Wii = awesome
Hope to see you guys there!

This man is right. If the deck plays Tarmogoyf and mana to cast it, it's not terrible.

But the new Mox Diamond errata hoses the deck hardcore, so I think it's fair.

Luckily, that won't be in effect yet.
EDIT: HAAAAAYY, I'm wrong. Shadowmoor will, in fact, be legal for this event :)
So, Jaynel, playing Scarecrows? Yeah? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge

I'm not sure if I can make it on the 3rd (70/30 depending on how nice it is), but I would definitely be all for a casual weekly Legacy event in Newton... Especially during the winter!

I can only keep it happening until June. But what days are best for you? I'll make it happen weekly :)

Evn (or anyone else), is there anyway you'd be able to acquire Shadowmoor singles? Getting them from an online store wouldn't be plausible since it doesn't ship out until May 2. If you could, that would be fantastic.

Nice joke man  I mean, I could have picked up a box at the prerelease for $100, cracked it, and hoped to get what you need. But the set won't be released until the day before this tournament. I'll tell you what, hit up the release party on May 2nd at Your Move Games or Pandemonium in Boston, get the cards you need, then come to this.
Sorry dude, but there's just seriously nothing we can do. That's why I liked it when the set wasn't legal until the end of the month. Anyway, might I ask what you're looking for?

Considering that they're uncommon? 50 cents. On a good day.

In compliment to Daze, FoW, and CounterTop.... it's probably not so bad, since Merfolk don't have a solid 1-drop aside tidal warrior.

I just passed my Level 2 Tournament Organizer test, so I can actually sanction this thing now. But if we sanction it, there's one less player playing (me) and we have to run it at REL 1 (which means I'll have to DQ Jaynel.)

It's a little joke. At the first tournament I ran, I wasn't judging, and Jaynel was DQed for cheating for forgetting to shuffle after a Survival activation.

There is absolutely NO reason to sanction this tournament. Unless Eternal rating has suddenly started to matter in even the slightest aspect, the possibility of losing even 1 player is a good enough reason to leave it unsanctioned.

Well, A lot of people do go to Local Legacy tournaments to improve their eternal rating because they do care about it, some will avoid tournaments that aren't sanctioned to go find ones that are due to it helping their eternal rating...

This was sorta my thought. But I don't mind if players want it sanctioned.

Well, its prety certain now that i'll be taking the Commuter Rail to this.
Could someone that knows the area at all tell me if these directions (from google maps) seem sane? Sometimes those map programs just spit out the worst possible directions. And since i'll be walking this, i dont want it to send me the long way for no reason (or to avoid a one way street or something).
Drive: 2.6 mi – about 8 mins
2.6 mi – about 8 mins
1. Head west on Washington St toward Central Ave 0.1 mi
2. Turn left at Walnut St 0.9 mi
3. Turn left at Commonwealth Ave/RT-30 0.8 mi
4. Turn right at Centre St 0.4 mi
5. Turn left at Beacon St 154 ft
6. Turn right at Herrick Rd 302 ft
7. Slight right to stay on Herrick Rd 0.3 mi
To: 210 Herrick Rd
Newton Center, MA 02459
EDIT: as for sanctioning, i dont care much one way or another. Sanctioned is better cause it counts towards the foil textless damnations (or whatever they send next time), but unsanctioned is better cause Lego gets to play. Biased judging FTW!!! (lol. jk).

Yeah, that seems fine, but if you get there on the day of and don't feel like walking it, I'll swing by and pick you up. PM me for my cell number and just gimme a ring.

Well, that was fun. 9 people, 4 Rounds to a top 4, which was split between me, Lego, from Cairo, and Dilettante, playing Mono U Merfolk, GBr Burning Survival, UWb Cunning Landstill, and TES, respectively. I posted a mini-report in the Merfolk thread.
After, before and in between rounds there was much Brawl to be had, in which I pwned, and we did a Type 4 draft afterwards, which I did not pwn. Oh, and just when I thought my day couldn't get any better, I was able to take a shit after I got home, presumably from the Thai food, after being constipated for ~a week.

It was fun guys... the MTG and the Brawl...
I was doing fine in Brawl with 3D... except against Lego's Pikachu... Bloody Pikachu!!! Okay, I didn't really fight AGAINST any other decent Pikachus with him. I've only used him a lot... >_< TOO... SHORT...
Don't feel bad, Pikachu has got to be DDD's worst matchup. Pikachu is just too bloody short for DDD. I found out today that Ice Climbers are pretty good against Pikachu :-P But playing against the computer is no fun :(
Dunno if I should keep playing Pikachu, or start someone else...
