View Full Version : My favourite cards.dec
Hey guys,
So I'm looking to get into legacy. I've not been playing magic very long..just over a year. First time I played was at the future sight pre-release :) so I don't have the widest range of cards. Since then I've played some standard which I liked and extended which I loved!! Legacy looks like such an exciting format and also would allow me to play with all my favourite cards! So I've attempted to make an extended deck just using the cards I have. I don't have any duel lands (atm) but I was donated some force of will a while back from someone who quit magic.
So here it is..it's basically my favourite cards all in one deck.
4 x Dark Confident
3 x Shadowmage Infiltrator
2 x Vendillion Clique
2 x Sower of Temptation
2 x Umezawa's Jitte
3 x Sensei's Diving Top
3 x Chrome Mox
4 x Counterspell
4 x Force of will
3 x Spell Snare
3 x Smother
3 x Thirst for Knowledge
3 x Counterbalance
3 enchantments
(39)
2 x Riptide Laboratory
4 x Polluted Delta
4 x Flooded Strand
4 x Watery Grave
4 x Mutavault
4 x Island
1 x swamp
I have no idea about a sideboard as I have no clue about the metagame in legacy...probably would think I'd include
stifle
threads..
thoughtsieze
withered wretch
extirpate
explosives...junk like that.
Questions??..
So would something like this be a viable deck in legacy? feel free to tweak it around as you see fit. I'm getting a tax rebate in a few weeks time so I'll have money to buy me some pretty new cards..and most of shadowmoor doesn't interest me much.
Worth splashing green for goyf goodness?
Worth splashing white for meddling mage...i dunno is combo big in legacy i heard about flash..but other than that..i know nothing .
Thanks :D

Yes, not bad at all for your first Legacy deck.
Worth splashing green for goyf goodness?
Yes. I'm not a fan of Shadowmage Infiltrator and would replace these with Goyfs. (If you're getting Goyfs, you better hope for a big tax rebate.)
I already got the goyfs :D so they will be good to go. It's fairly sizeable i think though. I've been in completely the wrong tax bracket for 2 years. *$ching$*
thanks for the advice.

I wouldn't add green. With enough disruption you don't need it and the best splash would be white, if you were to opt for one. I'll just point out a few things I saw in the list.
Vendillion Clique: Oh hey, I guess I should pay more attention to the new sets. Even though it's not obscenely powerful like most things in the Legacy metagame i.e. 'Goyf, it's a utilitarian card that has fair synergy with Riptide Laboratory and disrupts your opponent, if not as effectively as Thoughseize or Duress. The advantage it has over both TS and 'Goyf is it's a semi-TS on feasable legs that will at least trade with most non-threshold flyers (of course with Riptide Lab you just stack damage and bounce it, then reuse it next turn ).
Mutavault: Am I alone in thinking that this would be better as Mishra's Factory? Factlry doesn't have synergy with Riptide Laboratory, but is better in general, although that just may be personal bias in this case.
Thirst for Knowledge: Why not Compulsive Research? With 21 lands, you will prolly have more excess lands than creautres. Just a thought.
Spell Snare: How have these been treating you? I've seen them be great and I've seen them be terrible, but it's mostly deck- and Metagame dependent.
@ The deck in general: Is this seriously your first deck? It's well built for someone new to the format that just recently started playing. It looks a little like Ub Fish. Just a little. Also, Hulk Flash was banned a while back (THANK YOU JESUS!!!) so you won't have to build for that monstrosity.
@ SB considerations: Threads and Wretch aren't good choices for the way the meta is right now. Everything else is solid and well-advised, but not Threads of Disloyalty and Withered Wretch.

No, I'd say green is better as a splash than white. Goyf maindeck and krosan grip boarded is exactly what this deck seems to be lacking.
The more blatant problem with the deck is the lack of brainstorm. I would suggest replacing the counterspells with them, as counterbalance already fills up that niche.
Raharu, the problem with compulsive research is that it's sorcery speed, which is a HUGE drawback in this type of deck. CR also can't pitch extra tops or moxen. The alternative would be predict, since alongside top or brainstorm it can also bypass unneeded cards. Of course, if you replace infiltrator with goyf and thirst with predict you are running a tad low on 3cc cards for counterbalance.
Thanks for all the help so far. I'm certain that I want to put a splash in my deck but I'm uncertain which way to go. While green adds the almighty tarmogofy it doesn't really add much else except grips in the board..I take it these are pretty relavent in legacy? .
If I added white I could add yet another wizard :D in the form of meddling mage and swords to ploughshare which seems to be pretty damn strong! much better than the smother or ghastly demise which black could offer. I put the threads in the board because of opposing tarmogoyfs and jotun grunts and such. Although I'm not even sure if these see much play. Just working my way through the boards now looking at some decks. Threshold seems to be pretty hot. I guess which colour i splash depends how much i need the grip. What do you think about sower of temptation in legacy? and is countertop as strong as it is in extended. Will definitely add brainstorms (massive synergy with my whole deck, fetches and top etc WOW!) might take 2 counterspells out and something else.
Thanks for all the help so far
4 thirsts and the 2 vendillion clique should be fine for i think.. the 3cc if i were to take infiltrator out.

the green splash by itself gives a much faster clock to the deck, and a cheap/easy one. sad but true. also krosan grip is wicked

I've had some sucess with this UB deck, which is similar to yours, and I've yet to really find myself needing goyfs. With the CA of shadowmage and bob, you can win via removal or a sweeper like damnation. I won a few 30ish person tournaments with this, but have yet to update it with CB/Top, which may or may not belong. Turn 1 bob is about the hottest thing in legacy, evar.
