Bane of the Living

This is my report as best as I remember it, from Kevins tournament yesterday.
I came in third playing green Dreadstill. I picked up the deck recently after doing testing with Mossnought. I basically kept in the green splash for the maindecked Goyfs. The guys in the thread said he should be kept sideboard at best and I figured a good tournament standing would prove otherwise. I believe it did.
1 Academy Ruins
2 Wasteland
4 Factory
3 Trop
4 Island
4 Delta
4 Strand
2 Trinket Mage
3 Goyf
4 Nought
4 BS
3 Daze
1 Trickbind
4 Stifle
3 Spell Snare
4 FOW
3 Counterbalance
4 Standstill
2 Top

4 KGrip
2 Pithing Needle
1 EE
3 Tormods Crypt
3 Echoing Truth
The Academy Ruins was last minute since I forgot a 3rd wasteland and figured Id just try it out. I Think I would've won this tournament if I had a better sideboard.
Here are some minor notes since it was a long tourny with none taken..
Round one (Rich?) Shay playing 3c Gobs.
This is one of the few people in the room that Im intimidated to play. He always plays tight and makes the moves to outplay me and catch me off guard. I win round one by doing the early nought thing. Game two he Ancient Grudges nought and gets some Warrens Wierdings in to make it worse. Game three goes something similar. I think there was lackey into SGC in one of the two games he won.
All I brought in was the 4 Krosan Grips and 2 Needles. Not nearly as good as BEBS and Chills. I took out Standstills and Counterbalance. I wish I had Pyroclasm for the match.
Round two Mono Red Painters Servant.
This looks really bad for me since I figures he's maindecking all kinds of blasts. I come up with an early Nought and he plays SMASH TO SMITHEREINS! WTF!? Its game one.. A blast and a couple Flame Javelins later and Im toast.
I bring In Krips and Needles again. The best I have against Red.
Game two he gets me to three life before I stablize with Counterbalance Top. He didnt know how Countertop worked before this matchup. He kept throwing Blasts at it to try and take it out and I would keep Counterbalancing the attempts. Goyf gets in.
Game three goes the same but I win at a much healthier life total.
Round Three Brendan playing Tog
I asked him earlier which flavor of tog he was running I figured it was green, loam based, and it was. I figured this matchup would be good if I played the aggro role with goyf and Stifled his manabase. I was right. I don't think he ever hit 3 mana either game. I got Counterbalance both games and once even matched his Academy Ruins to Stip Mine him. The best Ruins was for me all day.
Round Four Aluren
If this guy and the two Painters players where a team or just buddies, I think I played them all. I thought I saw this guy thumbing a Recruiter around earlier in the day and there's only one deck that runs that janky 80 dollar Samurai. I played accordingly and Spell Snared his Wall of Roots, Stifled his Wooded Foothills, and kept him off :g::g:
Round Five Black Painters
This game starts off pretty rough. He's on the play and leads with a bunch of discard followed by not one but two Extirpates. The first on Goyf, the second on nought.. I then proceed to draw not one but three mishra's factories. He deals with 2 and drops a Painters Servant. He's drawing 2 cards for a while off Phyrexian Arena but I some how pull it off with a Meddling Mage and Factory getting in 3 life a turn (arena) while holding off everything he plays with Counterbalance. He two just learnt about the stupidness of Countertop. He Drain Life's me at some point for 6 but it only buys him two more turns.
Game two goes similar since I get Counterbalance and Top out. Its all over from there. He plays the Rack and entirely stips my hand but I recover by playing two Standstills and Countertopping every card he plays for the rest of the game. He was pretty discouraged, he tried to Wasteland my Floodedstrand as I activated it thinking it would Stifle the ability, and also Wasted an untapped fetch.
Round 6 Dreadstill Rob Rogers
I dont need to play this one out but he does. I dont remember that much aside from me drawing far more threats both games. I know he was a Goyf short off the list he wanted to run. In both I attempt to resolve a Standstill. I was on the play so I attempt a turn two Still and I Force and Daze it through. It paid off though, I beat down with factory for about 4 turns till he breaks it and my advantage takes the game. I have 2 goyfs and a nought to his nought and factory.
Game two I attempt a turn 3 Standstill and double force it into play. Figuring if it paid off last time it would this time too. I again had a factory in play. The blue battle of instants left him with only two cards in hand and my Standstill in play. He breaks it after alot of factory beats and I draw great cards again. Then the next five games involve taking turns dropping Goyfs one at a time. I have two, he has two. Then I Threads of Disloyalty one. I get some damage in before he EE's for 2 and kills 250$ worth of green guys. At this point he passes the turn when I have 2 Factories in play. But he has a Needle that he played turn one'ish naming factory. I Grip it and swing for 5, playing the 3rd Factory. He plays Trinket Mage and gets another Needle to my dismay. But I rip a second Grip off the top and windmill slam it on the table, attack with 3 factories, and get 2 in on his 2 remaining life. Crazy 2-0
Top Eight Round 1
MUC
This is the guy who won last month. I see that he's playing Augery Adepts and they seemed to work great for him all day. I curse myself for not playing Ichorid, a matchup he thinks is good for him..
My opener has 2 factories and other good stuff. I rip a third factory on my draw phase like a winner. I make my biggest play mistake of the day tho, when I swing for 2 when he has a Quicksand and pump it before damage only to lose it. But it did put him down a land and I still had 2 Factories. I beat with them till he draws another quicksand. He fact or fictions and takes the pile with Back to Basics, Manaleak, and Force over Augeryx2. To be honest so much boring nonsense happened in the two games that I dont remember them well. I remember winning mostly due to my Standstill's resolving. Counterbalances got countered. When he dropped Shackles I had an opening since he only had 2-3 mana up on my turn. I battle through and resolve Nought and smash him.
Top 4 Shay
3 c gobs
Game one he's on the play and I mull a great hand away to get a force to deal with lackey I know he has. I get it and counter his Lackey. Now I think for a minute. In our earlier game he kept a hand with one land, a vial, and lackey. So something tells me he's one of those goblin players that would just keep the one lander lackey hand. My first turn is Wasteland. Apparently it paid off since his 2nd land drop is a port. I get nought out and he taps my last land trying to tap me out and play Warrens Wierding on my only creature, nought. He almost caught me but I used the mana to activate a factory and he passed the turn. I win this one after a bit of a battle back from him.
Game two he actually mulligans to 4. I should have this. My opener is solid but has no Lackey answer. Oh well I think. He actually drops fuck face and I play Explosives for one. Then he drops Wort off lackey and things completely spiral out of control. I lose this one up 4 cards. Ouch..
Game three I have him on the ropes. I play a mid game Nought but he Ancient Grudges it. I waste his Green Source, play two goyfs of my own and play around with top for a bit. He assembles a little team of Ringleader, Matron, Fanatic, and Lackey. I don't know why he kept Fanatics in against me...
Im attacking with one goyf while one stays back for lackey. I probably should've played more aggressive but I was afraid of Warchief into Driver. I set a nought and Stifle on top of my deck to combo next turn. He Gempalms and I decide between losing my goyf or nought.. I choose to lose nought since he had Ancient Grudge in his yard. Though he had no green source I figured he could be holding one or simply drop next turn. I draw the Stifle off the top and save my goyf. Knowing theres nothing on top of my deck I decide to push in and reduce his guys before he gempalms again or finds black mana to cast Weirdings. I swing with both Goyfs, he drops low on life. He takes his turn and drops but Chief and Pile doom team.
6-2
So in the end a better anti red board would've served a huge help to my matches. Thanks to Kevin for running another amazing huge event.
Everyone should try to make it to next months aniversary tourny for a mox.
