View Full Version : Play testing decks

A friend and I have recently been getting back into magic, with a desire to get well aquainted with elgacy. After quite a bit of looking we have found decks that we both concider ours (I play Stax, he plays landstill).
The problem is when we try to play test we have very few decks to play with (Stax, BWG land destruction, a bad UBGW thresh deck, and a burn deck) This does not represent even close to the range that Legacy has to offer and we know that. We want to find 20-25 decks that we can proxy up and play test against.
Now the point of the thread, I need decks, and most importantly deck list by people who play the decks. I have tried looking through some of the primers on this site but its hard to distill what are really the most tested versions of a deck and what is a deck that some "noob" like me ends up building. So please can someone send me some lists. This will probably be helpful to many people who are not me.

www.deckcheck.net and look around for the lists that won the most. You can also have the site compile statistical averages for you (ex: how many Mystic Enforcers does UGW Thresh usually run?)

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Before getting injured I had ordered two cases of Ultra Pro Raven Black sleeves (1500 sleeves total, which roughly comes out to 20 decks + sb for each). Now I knew that before I started proxying up decks that printing out pages and and pages of Tarmogoyfs was going to be useless, so I decided to print up two playsets of each card (well, 9 on a page but whatever). Me and a friend would then make two decks from all the proxies I had printed out, test that matchup, and while we're figuring out the matchup, smooth out the deck. Alot of people have to be aware that taking a decklist online, especially for a format like legacy isn't really representitive of optimized builds. There's alot of playstyle, and meta situations that come up when choosing any deck, so when playtesting you have to take a bit of that account. I usually try to go with the most streamlined, consistent versions of a deck, identify which cards are the least important so I can maindeck some meta-defined cards. Ex: Goblins and finding what to take out for the lone Sharpshooter, etc.
I'm sure other people have other methods but I'm a strong advocate of play-testing IRL, with the premise of 'If you're going to do something, do it right'.

You can always just get the lists of this site or any other provider and proxy them all up.

A lot of pros proxy up decks to playtest. Once they have decided on the deck they want to play, they go get the cards. I usually don't have to do that, but I understand that some people are on a budget.

You really should - there is no reason to spend money on cards you won't use.

The man speaks the truth, I think I have between 20 and 30 decks completely proxied... access to free printing is huge though.

I use most of the stuff I get. Aren't you the one that get cards and sell them like a week later?
What's the point there?
